The TOTEM experiment has made a precise measurement of the elastic proton–proton differential cross-section at the centre-of-mass energy s=8 TeV based on a high-statistics data sample obtained with the β⁎=90 m optics. Both the statistical and systematic uncertainties remain below 1%, except for the t-independent contribution from the overall normalisation. This unprecedented precision allows to exclude a purely exponential differential cross-section in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.027

Rare-earth-doped chalcogenide glass fiber lasers and amplifiers have great applicative potential in many fields since they are key elements in the near and medium-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength range. In this paper, a review, even if not exhaustive, on amplification and lasing obtained by employing rare-earth-doped chalcogenide photonic crystal fibers is reported. Materials, devices, and feasible applications in the mid-IR are briefly mentioned.

A mid-IR lasing system based on a tapered fiber coupled to an Er3+-doped microsphere has been modeled and numerically investigated. In order to design and optimize the device performance, a dedicated 3-D numerical code exploiting the coupled mode theory and the rate equations model has been developed. The main energy level transitions among the Er3+ ions, the most relevant secondary ion-ion interactions, the amplified spontaneous emission, and the fiber-microsphere coupling phenomena have been taken into account. In order to optimize the lasing performance, several parametric simulations have been carried out. The obtained numerical results show that a laser threshold of about 55 mW and an output power of about -17.8 dBm can be obtained by using small microspheres.

In this paper, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate how to modulate the amplitude and phase of a microwave ring resonator by means of few-layers chemical vapour deposition graphene. In particular, both numerical and experimental results show a modulation of about 10 dB and a 90 degrees-shift (quadrature phase shift) when the graphene sheet-resistance is varied. These findings prove once again that graphene could be efficiently exploited for the dynamically tuning and modulation of microwave devices fostering the realization of (i) innovative beam-steering and beam-forming systems and (ii) graphene-based sensors. In this work, a novel indium fluoride glass 2-input-1-output fiber combiner was designed and fabricated to combine two Interband Cascade Laser (ICL) sources emitting in the mid-infrared wavelength range. To test the combiner performance, a dual-gas quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy sensor was demonstrated for the detection of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and nitric oxide (NO), employing two fiber-coupled ICLs having central emission wavelengths of 4,234 nm and 5,263 nm, respectively. The laser beams were coupled via the fiber combiner and then focused into a commercial acoustic detection module equipped with an input fiber-port, thus resulting in a plug-and-play sensing system. Tens of ppm-level detection limits at 3σ are achieved for both pollutants with a lock-in integration time (τ) of 0.1 s. Finally, an Allan-Werle analysis demonstrated the stability of the sensor, allowing the achievement of detection limit of 13 ppm and 4 ppm at τ = 10 s for CO 2 and NO, respectively., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2025 The Authors.)

We report on a passive Q-switching laser operation of an in-band pumped Dy-doped zirconium fluoride fiber using a commercially available semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Stable Q-switching pulse trains with minimum pulse duration of 460 ns, highest repetition frequency of 206 kHz, and pulse energy up to 1.7 µJ are demonstrated.

This work illustrates, to the best of our knowledge, the first non-adiabatic tapered single-mode zirconium fluoride optical fiber sensor in the mid-infrared spectral range. It is designed and fabricated via pulling and heating technique. A waist diameter d w  = 25 µm with no visible crystallization is achieved, overcoming the typical fluoride glass challenges associated with crystallization, narrow temperature fabrication window, and low glass transition temperature. The performance of the non-adiabatic tapered optical fiber is theoretically and experimentally investigated, demonstrating its high potential for a wide range of sensing applications in the mid-infrared spectral range.

For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the design and characterization of a 3 × 1 fused fiber combiner based on multimode step-index fluoroindate optical fibers (InF 3 ) has been performed. Several efforts to develop a well-consolidated normalization procedure and a fabrication protocol have been required due to the low melting temperature and the mechanical properties of fluoroindates. Fabrication results demonstrate repeatability and absence of crystallization. Therefore, the described fabrication process paves the way for manufacturing fluoroindate devices. The electromagnetic design of the combiner is carried out through modal investigation and beam propagation method by computing the transmission efficiency. The experimental results agree with the simulation and demonstrate the device feasibility to operate in the mid-infrared spectral range.

In this review paper some recent advances on optical sensors based on photonic crystal fibres are reported. The different strategies successfully applied in order to obtain feasible and reliable monitoring systems in several application fields, including medicine, biology, environment sustainability, communications systems are highlighted. Emphasis is given to the exploitation of integrated systems and/or single elements based on photonic crystal fibers employing Bragg gratings (FBGs), long period gratings (LPGs), interferometers, plasmon propagation, off-set spliced fibers, evanescent field and hollow core geometries. Examples of recent optical fiber sensors for the measurement of strain, temperature, displacement, air flow, pressure, liquid-level, magnetic field, and hydrocarbon detection are briefly described.

A comprehensive model for designing robust all-in-fiber microresonator-based optical sensing setups is illustrated. The investigated all-in-fiber setups allow light to selectively excite high-Q whispering gallery modes (WGMs) into optical microresonators, thanks to a pair of identical long period gratings (LPGs) written in the same optical fiber. Microspheres and microbubbles are used as microresonators and evanescently side-coupled to a thick fiber taper, with a waist diameter of about 18 µm, in between the two LPGs. The model is validated by comparing the simulated results with the experimental data. A good agreement between the simulated and experimental results is obtained. The model is general and by exploiting the refractive index and/or absorption characteristics at suitable wavelengths, the sensing of several substances or pollutants can be predicted.

A compact amplifier based on chalcogenide Pr 3+ -doped micro-disk coupled to two ridge waveguides is designed and refined by means of a home-made computer code. The gain G ≈ 7.9 dB is simulated for a Pr 3+ concentration of 10 000 ppm, input signal power of -30 dBm at the wavelength 4.7 µm and input pump power of 50 mW at the wavelength 1.55 µm. In the laser behavior, i.e. without input signal, the maximum slope efficiency S = 8.1 × 10 -4 is obtained for an input pump power of 2 mW. This value is about six times higher than that simulated for an optimized erbium-doped micro-disk.

The use of resonant whispering gallery modes (WGMs) for sensing exhibits various drawbacks and critical points related to the microsphere and tapered optical fiber fabrication tolerance. The uncertainty on the fiber taper and microsphere geometry or the gap between the microsphere and the fiber taper can complicate or limit the actual use of these devices for sensing, requiring peculiar calibration of the WGM based sensing set-up. An alternative double-step approach is proposed in this paper. In particular, the geometrical parameters of the set-up are recovered preliminarily and then the rare earth parameters are recovered via simple transmittance/gain measurements. The method is based on a refined electromagnetic model of the device suitably integrated with a particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach. The percent errors made on the up-conversion coefficients C up and C 3 are extremely low, being 0.75%, 0.05%, respectively. The procedure is very robust. It can be applied more in general, allowing the sensing of other physical parameters via simple transmittance measurements instead of wavelength shift ones, in both microsphere and microbubble based set-up.

An accurate design of an innovative fiber optic temperature sensor is developed. The sensor is based on a cascade of three microstructured optical fibers (MOFs). In the first one a suitable cascade of long period gratings is designed into the core. A single mode intermediate and a rare-earth activated Fabry-Perot optical cavity are the other two sensor MOF sections. An exhaustive theoretic feasibility investigation is performed employing computer code. The complete set-up for temperature monitoring can be obtained by utilizing only a low cost pump diode laser at 980 nm wavelength and a commercial optical power detector. The simulated sensitivity S = 315.1 μW/°C and the operation range ΔT = 100 °C is good enough for actual applications.

A Nd(3+)-doped tellurite-glass terrace microsphere was fabricated, and its laser characteristics using free-space pumping were investigated. A localized laser heating technique was used for preparing the 29-µm-diameter microsphere. The uncoated sphere exhibited many laser lines with 1.3-mW threshold. Fewer laser lines were observed after terrace formation. The terrace microsphere's lasing threshold was 0.6-2.4 mW depending on the pumping position in the terrace. These results indicate that the terrace structure can modify the modes of a microsphere laser and decrease the laser threshold due to an increase in the coupling efficiency between the cavity and free-space beam.

A dedicated 3D numerical model based on coupled mode theory and solving the rate equations has been developed to analyse, design and optimize an optical amplifier obtained by using a tapered fiber and a Er³⁺-doped chalcogenide microsphere. The simulation model takes into account the main transitions among the erbium energy levels, the amplified spontaneous emission and the most important secondary transitions pertaining to the ion-ion interactions. The taper angle of the optical fiber and the fiber-microsphere gap have been designed to efficiently inject into the microsphere both the pump and the signal beams and to improve their spatial overlapping with the rare earth doped region. In order to reduce the computational time, a detailed investigation of the amplifier performance has been carried out by changing the number of sectors in which the doped area is partitioned. The simulation results highlight that this scheme could be useful to develop high efficiency and compact mid-infrared amplifiers.

Different strategies for designing optical couplers, optimized to enhance the pump absorption in the rare-earth-doped core of microstructured fiber lasers, are illustrated. Three kinds/configurations of optical couplers have been designed and compared as examples of the different design strategies which can be followed. Their effectiveness to enhance the performance of an ytterbium-doped, double cladding, microstructured optical fiber laser has been accurately simulated. They consist of a suitable cascade of multiple long-period gratings (MLPGs) inscribed in the fiber core region. The characteristics of the MLPG couplers have been simulated via a homemade computer code based on both rate equations and an extended coupled mode theory. The proposed MLPG couplers seem particularly useful in the case of low rare-earth concentration but, even for a middle-high ytterbium concentration, as N(Yb)=5×10(25) ions/m(3), the slope efficiency S can be increased up to 20%, depending on the fiber length., (© 2012 Optical Society of America)

In this Letter, a method for recovering homogeneous upconversion coefficients (HUCs) in Er(3+)-doped glasses and erbium-activated devices is illustrated. It is based on a particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach. The HUCs are calculated on the basis of known values of optical gain evaluated in different pumping conditions. The obtained numerical results proof that the proposed technique provides solutions that are very close to the expected values. Therefore the method constitutes a tool for the design and optimization of efficient rare-earth doped lasers and optical amplifiers. This approach can be considered a feasible and valid alternative method in the field of material science and optical engineering for determining HUCs and avoiding the employment of expensive equipment for the measurement of ion-ion interaction parameters.

The electromagnetic and thermal analyses of a mode-stirred chamber designed for the heat treatment of antique and precious books are proposed. In particular, the electromagnetic and thermal perturbations due to the presence of metallic insets inside the treated material (paper) are investigated. The temperature measurement results obtained by thermography and by temperature fiber-optic sensor are also reported. Finally, metallic shields are experimentally demonstrated to prevent the overheating of the treated material and the consequent damage of the antique tomes.

We study second-harmonic generation in a negative-index material cavity. The transmission spectrum shows a bandgap between the electric and magnetic plasma frequencies. The nonlinear process is made efficient by local phase-matching conditions between a forward-propagating pump and a backward-propagating second-harmonic signal. By simultaneously exciting the cavity with counterpropagating pulses, and by varying their relative phase difference, one is able to enhance or inhibit linear absorption and the second-harmonic conversion efficiency.

This paper deals with design and refinement criteria of erbium doped hole-assisted optical fiber amplifiers for applications in the third band of fiber optical communication. The amplifier performance is simulated via a model which takes into account the ion population rate equations and the optical power propagation. The electromagnetic field profile of the propagating modes is carried out by a finite element method solver. The effects of the number of cladding air holes on the amplifier performance are investigated. To this aim, four different erbium doped hole-assisted lightguide fiber amplifiers having a different number of cladding air holes are designed and compared. The simulated optimal gain, optimal length, and optimal noise fig. are discussed. The numerical results highlight that, by increasing the number of air holes, the gain can be improved, thus obtaining a shorter amplifier length. For the erbium concentration NEr=1.8x1024 ions/m3, the optimal gain G(Lopt) increases up to ~2dB by increasing the number of the air holes from M=4 to M=10.

A time domain analysis of light amplification in an erbium doped silica-titania planar waveguide is reported. The investigation is performed by means of a home-made computer code which exploits the auxiliary differential equation scheme combined with the finite difference time domain technique to solve Maxwell's equations and the rate equations. The simulation model takes into account the pump and input signal propagation, the secondary transitions pertaining to the ion-ion interactions and exploits the optical, spectroscopic and geometrical parameters measured on the fabricated waveguide.

An optical multiplexer-demultiplexer based on an index-confined photonic band gap waveguide is proposed. The dropping of electromagnetic waves having a given frequency or a certain frequency band is obtained via a phase-shifted grating obtained by breaking the uniform period sequence to include a defect layer. The selective filtering properties of the proposed structure are simulated by means of a computer code relying on a bi-directional beam propagation method based on the method of lines.
