Abstract

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams will be completed in late 2021. We report here on the current efforts to commission the first stages of the 200-MeV/u superconducting, continuous wave heavy-ion linac. The statuses of the cryogenic plant and its distribution system, the accelerator cryomodule commissioning and operations, the ion source and front end transport development, the radio-frequency quadrupole commissioning, and thenbeam dynamics development to support high-power operation are reviewed. Plans for commissioning the remainder of the linac systems are presented.

Abstract

International audience; The first accelerated exotic beam of the SPIRAL (Production System of Radioactive Ion and Acceleration On-Line) facility at GANIL at Caen has been delivered for experiments in September 2001. After working for almost 5 years, 32 experiments were performed in the facility using exotic isotopes of helium, oxygen, neon, argon and krypton. The intensities of the radioactive beams increased since the first beam was delivered. Nominal intensity values are achieved for most of noble gas beams. Developments of new beams as well as the increasing of present intensities for a number of isotopes are being undertaken. In particular, in this contribution it is presented the first results obtained for the production of light alkali beams. Other developments are also envisaged in the close future.

Abstract

International audience; The primary goal of an irradiation facility for fusion applications will be to generate a material irradiation database for the design, construction, licensing and safe operation of a fusion demonstration power station (e.g., DEMO). This will be achieved through testing and qualifying material performance under neutron irradiation that simulates service up to the full lifetime anticipated in the power plant. Preliminary investigations of 14 MeV neutron effects on different kinds of fusion material could be assessed by the SPIRAL 2 Project at GANIL (Caen, France), aiming at rare isotope beams production for nuclear physics research with first beams expected by 2009. In SPIRAL 2, a deuteron beam of 5 mA and 40 MeV interacts with a rotating carbon disk producing high-energy neutrons (in the range between 1 and 40 MeV) via C (d, xn) reactions. Then, the facility could be used for 3-4 months $y^−1$ for material irradiation purposes. This would correspond to damage rates in the order of 1-2 dpa $y^−1$ (in Fe) in a volume of $\sim$10 $cm^3$. Therefore, the use of miniaturized specimens will be essential in order to effectively utilize the available irradiation volume in SPIRAL 2. Sample package irradiation temperature would be in the range of 250-1000 °C. The irradiation level of 1-2 dpa $y^−1$ with 14 MeV neutrons (average energy) may be interesting for micro-structural and metallurgical investigations (e.g., mini-traction, small punch tests, etc.) and possibly for the understanding of specimen size/geometric effects of critical material properties. Due to the small test cell volume, sample in situ experiments are not foreseen. However, sample packages would be, if required, available each month after transfer in a special hot cell on-site.

Abstract

Commune avec MECA au CENBG; International audience; Light-particles stable high-intensity beams (p, d, 3,4He...) will be available from the Linac driver accelerator of SPIRAL-2. Yields of neutron-deficient isotopes as well as of neutron-rich isotopes (by means of reactions with secondary neutrons) are compared with those presently available at the SPIRAL-1 facility. We explore, for light beams (Z< 16) asked in the 'white book' of SPIRAL-2 1, the production methods taking into account the in-target yield but also the feasibility of making such beams by the ISOL method (considering reaction, target, thermal and release properties). We discuss some of the tests needed and planned. A comparison with the present and potentially attainable yields at SPIRAL-1 is presented.

Abstract

International audience; In the framework of the production of radioactive ion beams by the isotope separator online method, a new system has been developed at GANIL/SPIRAL I to produce multicharged alkali ions. The principle, referred to as the “direct 1+/N+ method,” consists of a surface ionization source associated with a multicharged electron-cyclotron-resonance ion source without an intermediate mass separator. This new system has been tested online using a 48Ca primary beam at 60.3 A MeV. The experimental evidence of the direct 1+/N+ process has been obtained for a potential difference between the two sources of 11 V and with a 1+/N+ charge breeding efficiency of 0.04% for 47K5+. This value is significantly lower than the value of 6% obtained for stable K ions with the standard 1+/N+ method. A possible explanation is given in the text.

Abstract

International audience; The SPIRAL2 project, currently under construction at GANIL, will include an isotope separator on line based facility for the production and acceleration of radioactive ion beams. A superconducting linear accelerator will accelerate 5 mA deuterons up to 40 MeV and 1 mA heavy ions up to 14.5 MeV/u. These primary beams will be used to bombard both thick and thin targets. We are investigating three different techniques to produce the radioactive ion beams: (1) the neutron induced fission of uranium carbide, (2) the direct interaction of deuterons in a uranium carbide target, and (3) the interaction of a heavy ion beam with a target. All these production systems will be coupled to an ion source. Four kinds of ion sources are foreseen for the ionization of the radioactive atoms: an electron cyclotron resonance ion source, a surface ionization ion source, a forced electron beam induced arc discharge ion source, and a laser ion source depending on the characteristics of the desired radioactive ion beam in terms of intensity, efficiency, purity, etc. A presentation of the SPIRAL2 project and of the different production systems is given.

Abstract

International audience; This work has been carried out at GANIL within the ambit of the TARGISOL European collaboration which aims to study the relevant variables governing the release of radioactive elements from targets in an ISOL system. This work shows how it has been possible to extract diffusion coefficients for 35Ar atoms diffusing out of graphite targets from release time measurements by using an analytic description of the release times. The diffusion coefficients and efficiencies are presented and compared with results obtained using a “continuous” method.

Abstract

International audience; In the framework of the production of radioactive alkali ion beams by the isotope separator on-line (ISOL) method in SPIRAL, a surface ionization source has been developed at GANIL to produce singly-charged ions of Li, Na and K. This new source has been designed to work in the hostile environment found at SPIRAL whilst having a long lifetime. This new system of production has two ohmic heating components: the first for the target oven and the second for the ionizer. The latter, being in carbon, offers high reliability and competitive ionisation efficiency. This new surface ionization source has been tested on line using a 48Ca primary beam at 60,3A MeV with an intensity of 0,14 pµA. The ionization efficiencies obtained for Li, Na and K are significantly better than the theoretical values calculated using the known Langmuir surface ionisation equation. Moreover, the design of the ion source avoids the cavity effects reported by Kirchner. The enhanced efficiency can be understood by considering a particular effect related to the polarization of the ionizer. This feature is shown to be extremely important also for short-lived isotopes. In the future, this source will be associated with the multicharged electron-cyclotron-resonance (ECR) ion source NANOGAN III for production of multicharged alkali ions in SPIRAL. The preliminary tests of the setup for the production of multicharged alkali ions will also be presented in this contribution.

Abstract

Production of radioactive ions has started at GANIL on the SPIRAL facility since 2001 and numerous multicharged radioactive ion beams have been delivered for high energy nuclear experiments. This article makes an overview of the different beams that have been produced. In the mean time, an important R and D research program is continued in oder to produce new species of radioactive elements. A new concept of multicharged radioactive production that couples a monocharged ion source, based on the monolithe concept, to an ecr ion source like nanogan3 is under developments and is described The development of monocharged ion sources with high efficiencies is also motivated by a new big project that is under studies at GANIL : the SPIRAL 2 Project. The goal of this project consists in extending the disponible radioactive ion beams to very heavy elements created with a new method of production : while the spiral 1 facility uses the projectile fragmentation for radioactive nuclei production, the spiral 2 project is based on the fission of a Uranium carbide target induced by a neutron flow created by a high intensity deuton beam. Abstract

Two electron cyclotron resonance ion sources, ECR 4 and ECR 4 M, provide high charge state beams to the compact cyclotrons, C01 and C02, which are alternative injectors for the GANIL cyclotrons CSS1 and CSS2. When an injector runs for a long period, the off-line source can be used for beam developments or, together with the off-line injector, deliver a beam to a new beam line, called IRRSUD, for atomic physics experiments. Various ions are requested for beam time for periods of 8 to 11 weeks. Although the majority of the required beams comes from gaseous elements, work on the production of beams of metallic ions is always a main activity. New ovens are being developed to improve the capacity and the performances of the standard micro-oven. The latest results with 238U beam, using sputtering method and 76Ge beam using recycling method, are reported here.

Abstract

International audience; Two new target-source systems have been realized and used to produce radioactive elements with primary beams of 78Kr (68.5 A MeV) and 36Ar (95 A MeV). The production yields of 73,72Kr, 35,33,32Ar, 30,29P, 31,30S, 34,33,32Cl and of some other condensable elements such as 73,72Br and 73,71Se are presented. The results of the improvements between the two versions of the production system are discussed.

Abstract

The production of singly charged atomic and molecular ions with a new 2.45 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source has been studied. The ion source Mono 1000 uses a new magnetic confinement structure. The elements Ne, Ar, and Kr are ionized with efficiencies close to 100%, while 45% has been achieved for He. In the case of the molecules SO2 and SF6, more than 90% overall efficiency has been observed with more than 40% of sulfur atoms leaving the source under the form S+. A total extracted yield of 4×1012 singly charged fulleren (C60) ions per second has also been observed.

Abstract

In recent years, progress concerning the production of high intensity of metallic ion beams (58Ni, 48Ca, 76Ge) at GANIL have been performed. The metallic ion from volatile compound method has been successfully used to produce a high intensity nickel beam with the ECR4 ion source: 20 e μA of 58Ni11+ at 24 kV extraction voltage. This beam has been maintained for 8 days and accelerated up to 74.5 MeV/u by our cyclotrons with a mean intensity of 0.13 pμA on target. This high intensity, required for experiment, led to the discovery of the doubly magic 48Ni isotope. The oven method has been first tested with natural metallic calcium on the ECR4 ion source, then used to produce a high power beam (740 W on target, i.e., 0.13 pμA accelerated up to 60 meV/u) of 48Ca still keeping a low consumption (0.09 mg/h). A germanium beam is now under development, using the oven method with germanium oxide. The ionization efficiencies have been measured and compared.

Abstract

International audience; High electronic excitations in radiation of metallic targets with swift heavy ion beams at the coulomb barrier play a dominant role in the damaging processes of some metals. The inelastic thermal spike model was developed to describe tracks in materials and is applied in this paper to some systems beams/targets employed recently in some nuclear physics experiments. Taking into account the experimental conditions and the approved electron-phonon coupling factors, the results of the calculation enable to interpret the observation of the fast deformation of some targets.

Abstract

The upgrade of the "Système de Production d'Ions Radioactifs en Ligne" phase I (SPIRAL I) installed at the "Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds" (GANIL) situated at Caen, France, is in progress and should be ready by 2014. In parallel, the first part of SPIRAL II facility is currently under construction. The global status of the upgrade is presented: goal, radioactive ion production systems, modification of the production cave and impact of the current safety re-evaluation of GANIL.

Abstract

The SPIRAL2 project, currently under construction at GANIL, will include an isotope separator on line based facility for the production and acceleration of radioactive ion beams. A superconducting linear accelerator will accelerate 5 mA deuterons up to 40 MeV and 1 mA heavy ions up to 14.5 MeV/u. These primary beams will be used to bombard both thick and thin targets. We are investigating three different techniques to produce the radioactive ion beams: (1) the neutron induced fission of uranium carbide, (2) the direct interaction of deuterons in a uranium carbide target, and (3) the interaction of a heavy ion beam with a target. All these production systems will be coupled to an ion source. Four kinds of ion sources are foreseen for the ionization of the radioactive atoms: an electron cyclotron resonance ion source, a surface ionization ion source, a forced electron beam induced arc discharge ion source, and a laser ion source depending on the characteristics of the desired radioactive ion beam in terms of intensity, efficiency, purity, etc. A presentation of the SPIRAL2 project and of the different production systems is given.

23. Development of a 1+/N+ setup for the production of multicharged radioactive alkali ions in SPIRAL.

Abstract

In the framework of the production of radioactive ion beams by the isotope separator online method, a new system has been developed at GANIL/SPIRAL I to produce multicharged alkali ions. The principle, referred to as the "direct 1+/N+ method," consists of a surface ionization source associated with a multicharged electron-cyclotron-resonance ion source without an intermediate mass separator. This new system has been tested online using a (48)Ca primary beam at 60.3 A MeV. The experimental evidence of the direct 1+/N+ process has been obtained for a potential difference between the two sources of 11 V and with a 1+/N+ charge breeding efficiency of 0.04% for (47)K(5+). This value is significantly lower than the value of 6% obtained for stable K ions with the standard 1+/N+ method. A possible explanation is given in the text.
