Abstract Back‐arc basins (BABs) are associated with plate margins where crustal shortening, seafloor spreading, and volcanism coexist. The Vavilov basin (Tyrrhenian Sea) is a Pliocene BAB associated with the Apennine‐Tyrrhenian Sea subduction system and characterized by mantle exhumation. The NNE‐SSW elongated Vavilov seamount represents the easternmost and younger spreading ridge of the Vavilov basin. Here we present results of a morphological and magnetic study of the Vavilov seamount. Our results show that the seamount represents the last stage of the eastward asymmetric opening of the BAB. Its plumbing system consists of a dike swarm emplaced during the reversed Matuyama epoch and a younger shallow reservoir feeding the central and eastern sectors during the normal Brunhes epoch. This evolution is associated with the progressive loading of the edifice due to lava flow emplacement. The asymmetry of the seamount mirrors the asymmetric opening of the Vavilov back‐arc basin.

Understanding subduction zone mechanics and resulting volcanism remains challenging. Here, the authors present seismic reflection profiles from the Mediterranean Sea where serpentinite diapirs are present on the external subduction system of the Calabrian Arc and may be linked to recent volcanism at Etna.

The Irpinia Fault, also known as the Monte Marzano Fault System, located in the Southern Apennines (Italy), is one of the most seismically active structures in the Mediterranean. It is the source of the 1980, Ms 6.9, multi-segment rupture earthquake that caused significant damage and nearly 3,000 casualties. Paleoseismological surveys indicate that this structure has generated at least four Mw ~ 7 surface-rupturing earthquakes in the past 2 ka. This paper presents a comprehensive, high-resolution geophysical investigation focused on the southernmost fault segment of the Monte Marzano Fault System, i.e., the Pantano-Ripa Rossa Fault, outcropping within the Pantano di San Gregorio Magno intramontane basin. The project, named TEst Site IRpinia fAult (TESIRA), was supported by the University of Napoli Federico II to study the near-surface structure of this intra-basin fault splay that repeatedly ruptured co-seismically in the past thousands of years. Our imaging approach included 2D and 3D electrical and seismic surveys, gravimetry, 3D FullWaver electrical tomography, drone-borne GPR and magnetic surveys, and CO 2 soil flux assessment across the surface rupture. This multidisciplinary investigation improved our understanding of the basin shallow structure, providing an image of a rather complex subsurface fault and basin geometry. Seismic data suggest that fault activity at the Pantano segment of MMFS is characterized by a near-surface cumulative displacement greater than previous estimations, calling into question earlier assumptions about the timing of its activation. Despite some challenges with our drone-mounted survey equipment, the integrated dataset provides a comprehensive and reliable image of the subsurface structure. CORAL (Catamaran fOr UndeRwAter expLoration) is a compact, unmanned catamaran-type vehicle designed and developed to assist the scientific community in exploring marine areas such as inshore regions that are not easily accessible by traditional vessels. This vehicle can operate in different modalities: completely autonomous, semi-autonomous, or remotely assisted by the operator, thus accommodating various investigative scenarios. CORAL is characterized by compact dimensions, a very low draft and a total electric propulsion system. The vehicle is equipped with a single echo-sounder, a 450 kHz Side Scan Sonar, an Inertial Navigation System assisted by a GPS receiver and a pair of high-definition cameras for recording both above and below the water surface. Here, we present results from two investigations: the first conducted in the tourist harbour in Pozzuoli Gulf and the second in the Riomaggiore-Manarola marine area within the Cinque Terre territory (Italy). Both surveys yielded promising results regarding the potentiality of CORAL to collect fine-scale submarine elements such as anthropic objects, sedimentary features, and seagrass meadow spots. These capabilities characterize the CORAL system as a highly efficient investigation tool for depicting shallow bedforms, reconstructing coastal dynamics and erosion processes and monitoring the evolution of biological habitats.

Understanding magmatic systems and deep hydrothermal circulation beneath arc-volcanoes provides insights into deep processes associated with slab-subduction and mantle-wedge partial melting. Here we analyze hydrothermal flow below a structural high (Capo Vaticano Ridge, CVR) located offshore Capo Vaticano (western Calabria) and affected by magmatic intrusions generated from above the Ionian subducting-slab. In order to explain observations, we combine geophysical and numerical modelling results. Fluid-flow modelling shows that temperature distribution and geothermal gradient are controlled mainly by hydrothermal circulation, in turn affected by heat source, fault pattern, rock permeability, basement topography and sediment thickness. Two main faults, shaping the structural high and fracturing intensely the continental crust, enable deep hydrothermal circulation and shallow fluid discharge. Distribution of seismicity at depth supports the hypothesis of a slab below Capo Vaticano, deep enough to enable mantle-wedge partial melting above the subduction zone. Melt migration at shallow levels forms the magmatic intrusions inferred by magnetic anomalies and by δ 3 He enrichment in the discharged fluids at the CVR summit. Our results add new insights on the southern Tyrrhenian Sea arc-related magmatism and on the Calabrian inner-arc tectonic setting dissected by seismogenic faults able to trigger high-destructive earthquakes.

The Messina Strait, that separates peninsular Italy from Sicily, is one of the most seismically active areas of the Mediterranean. The structure and seismotectonic setting of the region are poorly understood, although the area is highly populated and important infrastructures are planned there. New seismic reflection data have identified a number of faults, as well as a crustal scale NE-trending anticline few km north of the strait. These features are interpreted as due to active right-lateral transpression along the north-eastern Sicilian offshore, coexisting with extensional and right-lateral transtensional tectonics in the southern Messina Strait. This complex tectonic network appears to be controlled by independent and overlapping tectonic settings, due to the presence of a diffuse transfer zone between the SE-ward retreating Calabria subduction zone relative to slab advance in the western Sicilian side.
