Abstract: An overview is presented of the progress since 2021 in the construction and scientific programme preparation of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility. Licensing for building construction has been granted at the end of 2021. Licensing for Cat. A radiologic source has been also granted in 2022. The construction of the toroidal field magnet system is progressing. The prototype of the 170 GHz gyrotron has been produced and it is now under test on the FALCON facility. The design of the vacuum vessel, the poloidal field coils and the civil infrastructures has been completed. The shape of the first DTT divertor has been agreed with EUROfusion to test different plasma and exhaust scenarios: single null, double null, X-divertor and negative triangularity plasmas. A detailed research plan is being elaborated with the involvement of the EUROfusion laboratories.

Abstract: The intrinsic poor loading of Ion Cyclotron (IC) plasma-facing antennas makes the use of Tuning and Matching Systems (TMSs) a necessity. The antenna plus TMS is a resonant system; in the TMS and access lines high voltages (tens of kV) must be accounted for in the unavoidable unmatched part of the feeding lines. In this work, we propose and test an innovative type of IC launcher; it is based on achieving resonance of the self-standing antenna, i.e. without the TMS. A mechanical full-metal tuning mechanism is described and demonstrated to allow wide-band operation. A systematic analysis of possible antenna topologies has led to identifying a structure that can allow good impedance matching along with compliance with maximum electric field constraints. Most of the design is carried out using a simplified plasma and a commercial analysis tool and then validated with a realistic plasma using TOPICA code.

Abstract: In any large device for research on magnetic confinement thermonuclear fusion, the window assemblies are essential to preserve the conditions for successful ex- periments and to guarantee adequate access for inspection and measurement. In ITER, the materials traditionally used for the windows will be exposed to an exceptionally harsh environment. Moreover, the systematic use of tritium as fuel would make any failure of the primary vacuum containment a particularly dangerous accident. It is therefore essential to understand the potential threats to the integrity of the windows assemblies and define a series of tests to ensure their properties and quality before installation. One specific hazard to the windows is the microwave radiation due to either heating schemes or specific diagnostics. A fraction of the stray radiation incident on the window leads to dielectric heating, which causes a thermal load. The potentially harmful consequences of such a thermal load on the window assemblies are: (i) excessively high temperature (risk of bonding melting) and (ii) excessive, heating rate (risk of cracking due to a high temperature gradient at the location of the bonding). In this paper the main causes of degradation, which could lead to failures under microwave loads, have been identified. A series of laboratory tests have been defined, to assess the quality of the materials and the assemblies, including the coatings for the absorption of the microwave radiation in the ducts leading to the windows. Complete testing procedures and an overview of the main facilities, where the assemblies and materials could be qualified, are also provided.

Abstract: In ITER, the window assemblies will be subjected to the combination of loads due to stray radiation and neutron streaming. Therefore, adequate tests are needed to qualify the windows for the hostile environmental conditions. In ITER, two main systems will generate high power waves in the millimeter range: the Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) system, with a total power of 1 MW at 60 GHz, and the Electron Cyclotron Resonant Heating (ECRH) system, with a maximum power of 20 MW at 170 GHz. In particular operating conditions, a significant power fraction can be deflected in other ports as stray radiation. High levels of stray radiation could damage diagnostic windows that are safety relevant components. The radiation absorbed by the fused silica window assemblies on ports #11 and #12 have been evaluated in detail. The possible effects of gamma and neutron flux on the dielectric permittivity and loss tangent, determining the absorption, have also been reviewed.

Abstract: The present work has been developed within the frame of the EFDA task “HCD-08-03-01: LH4IT, EU contribution to the ITER LHCD Development Plan” The use of rectangular oversized waveguides in the Main Transmission Lines (MTLs) of the Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) system of ITER, requires to investigate the problem of bends. The high number of involved waveguides (from 24 to 48) must be also taken into account. Thus, it has to consider not only the best choice in terms of curved framework, but also the proper allocation of all the waveguides. In this context, the principal specifications that characterize the design of the bends are: a) to minimize the reflection of the fundamental TE10 mode; b) to maximize the transmission of the fundamental TE10 mode; c) to minimize the coupling between the TE10 mode and other spurious modes that propagate at 5 GHz. This paper presents an overview about the bend options, and it compares the performances of several frameworks analyzed by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) commercial software, HFSS®. First of all, simple circular trajectory curves with different angulations, are considered. Then, the so called Mitre Bends alternatives are deeply analyzed. These curves are studied by several authors in the mono-modal configuration, with different techniques but the propagation in an oversized environment is a topic not much attended in literature. The only design parameter of the simple circular trajectory bend is the bending radius, so that the design is not flexible; the Mitre Bend structure is at least more flexible than the previous one and it is of great interest to study this type of bend to check the possible advantages. Finally an innovative modified Mitre Bend solution based on a cascade of trapezoidal elements is proposed.

Abstract: In order to assist the design of the future ITER Lower Hybrid launcher, coupling codes ALOHA, from CEA Cadarache, TOPLHA, from Politecnico di Torino, and GRILL3D (Dr.Mikhail Irzak, A.F.Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia), from ENEA Frascati, have been compared with the initial (3 modules with 8 active waveguides per module) and updated (6 modules with 4 active waveguides per module) Passive-Active Multijunction (PAM) Lower Hybrid antennas. Both ALOHA and GRILL3D formulate the problem in terms of rectangular waveguides modes, while TOPLHA is based on boundary-value problem with the adoption of a triangular cell-mesh to represent the relevant waveguides surfaces. Several plasma profiles, with varying edge density and density increase, have been adopted to provide a complete description of the simulated launcher in terms of reflection coefficient, computed at the beginning of each LH module, and of power spectra. Good agreement can be observed among codes for all the simulated profiles.

Abstract: A 20 MW Lower Hybrid Current Drive system using an antenna based on the Passive Active Multijunction (PAM) concept is envisaged on ITER for steady state operation, including the current ramp-up phase. In the frame of an EFDA task, a conceptual design of such a system has been performed. This paper gives an insight of the mechanical analysis, modeling and design carried out on two elements of the antenna: the front face, and the RF windows which constitute the first tritium barrier. The front face of the antenna will have to withstand high heat and fast neutrons fluxes directly from the plasma. It will be actively cooled and present a beryllium coating upon ITER requirement. The main issues were to ensure a reasonable margin versus a maximum temperature fixed by safety concerns (650 °C for plasma facing beryllium), and to understand and assess resistance of the assembly while in operation. Analyses were conducted on some variants of this PAM. Manufacturing scenarios considering ITER requirements and involving various techniques (brazing, high isostatic pressure bonding, explosion bonding) were explored, and simulations over subsequent residual stresses were conducted. Analyses showed that surface temperatures do not exceed 500°C, and stresses should not affect the integrity of the antenna mouth. The RF window is a critical component since it also has a safety function. We planed to design a water cooled 5 GHz CW RF “pillbox” window capable of sustaining 500 kW of transmitted power. An RF optimization conducted on this concept allowed to combine good RF properties and low dielectric losses. It resulted in a maximum thermal stress in the ceramic of 31 MPa, well below the static fatigue limit of 50 MPa. The residual stresses resulting from the brazing methods involved in the manufacturing of this multi-material assembly (copper, copper alloys and ceramic) were also analyzed. Both studies allow us to move forward and focus on critical issues, such as manufacturing processes (beryllium, bonding techniques…) and R&D associated programs including test of mock-ups.

Abstract: A very preliminary design of the Lower Hybrid Current Drive system for ITER was developed in the early years of the 2000's. Many parameters of the system were defined on the base of knowledge and technology of those times. Experimental results obtained in the last few years, like the successful tests of a PAM launcher on FTU and on Tore Supra have definitely indicated this concept as a possible candidate for the LHCD launcher for ITER. The successful development of a prototype klystron at 5GHz with a target RF power of 500kW CW has indicated this power as an upper limit for the present high vacuum electron tubes technology at this frequency. From the physics point of view the ITER operational scenarios have been well defined, while the last experiments have pointed out the effectiveness of the LHCD waves at high plasma density. All these results imposed a revision of the existing design of the LHCD system. The RF power limited to a maximum of 500kW per klystron has determined a new modularity of the whole system and of the PAM launcher. In addition a relatively shorter distance between klystrons and ITER machine suggested the possibility of using rectangular oversized waveguides, excited in the fundamental TE01 mode, for the realization of the Main Transmission Lines (MTLs). Therefore all the main microwave components of the system have been revised on these basis and different and more suitable solutions have been investigated. In particular this paper compares the performances of the two different MTLs, based respectively on circular and rectangular waveguides, describes the main components of the proposed rectangular MTL and analyzes their main microwave characteristics. Companion papers in this Conference cover all the other aspects of the updated design of the LHCD system for ITER. The present revision has been carried out in the frame of the EFDA task “HCD-08-03-01: EU Contribution to the ITER LHCD Development Plan (LH4IT)”.

Abstract: First pass absorption of the Lower Hybrid waves in thermonuclear devices like ITER and DEMO is modeled by coupling the ray tracing equations with the quasi-linear evolution of the electron distribution function in 2D velocity space. As usually assumed, the Lower Hybrid Current Drive is not effective in a plasma of a tokamak fusion reactor, owing to the accessibility condition which, depending on the density, restricts the parallel wavenumber to values greater than n∥crit and, at the same time, to the high electron temperature that would enhance the wave absorption and then restricts the RF power deposition to the very periphery of the plasma column (near the separatrix). In this work, by extensively using the "raystar" code, a parametric study of the propagation and absorption of the LH wave as function of the coupled wave spectrum (as its width, and peak value), has been performed very accurately. Such a careful investigation aims at controlling the power deposition layer possibly in the external half radius of the plasma, thus providing a valuable aid to the solution of how to control the plasma current profile in a toroidal magnetic configuration, and how to help the suppression of MHD mode that can develop in the outer part of the plasma. This analysis is useful not only for exploring the possibility of profile control of a pulsed operation reactor as well as the tearing mode stabilization, but also in order to reconsider the feasibility of steady state regime for DEMO. © 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: The physics requirements of the heating and current (H&CD) systems in a Demonstration Fusion Power Plant (DEMO) are often beyond the actual level of design maturity and technology readiness required. The recent EU fusion roadmap advocates a pragmatic approach and favours, for the initial design integration studies, systems to be as much as possible, extrapolated from the ITER experience. To reach the goal of demonstrating the production of electricity in DEMO with a closed fuel cycle by 2050, one must ensure reliability, availability, maintainability, inspectability (RAMI) as well as performance, efficiency and optimized design for the H&CD systems. In the recent Power Plant Physics & Technology (PPP&T) Work Programme, a number of H&CD studies were performed. The four H&CD systems Neutral Beam (NB) Injection, Electron Cyclotron (EC), Ion Cyclotron (IC) and Lower Hybrid (LH) were considered. First, a physics optimization study was made assuming all technologies are available and identifying which parameters are needed to optimize the performance for given plasma parameters. Separately, the (i) technological maturity was considered (e.g. 240 GHz gyrotrons for EC) and (ii) technologies were adapted (e.g. multi-stage depressed collector for EC) or (iii) novel solutions (e.g. photo-neutralization for NB or new antennae concepts for IC) were studied to overcome the limitations of the present H&CD systems with respect to DEMO requirements. Abstract: Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Inspectability (RAMI) concepts and techniques, that acquired great importance during the first manned space missions, have been progressively extended to industrial, scientific and consumer equipments to assure them satisfactory performances and lifetimes. In the design of experimental facilities, like tokamaks, mainly aimed at demonstrating validity and feasibility of scientific theories, RAMI analysis has been often left aside. DEMO, the future prototype fusion reactors, will be instead designed for steadily delivering electrical energy to commercial grids, so that the RAMI aspects will assume an absolute relevance since their initial design phases. A preliminary RAMI analysis of the LHCD system for the conceptual EU DEMO reactor is given in the paper.

Abstract: Nuclear fusion in magnetic confinement devices is one of the most challenging application fields for electromagnetics and mechanics. In particular antennas, charged with the task of handling and delivering high power to the plasma, have to operate in a harsh environment with very demanding thermal and mechanical requirements. Within this scenario, the use of tools able to efficiently predict the antenna behaviour is mandatory. In the present work, the TOrino Polytechnic Ion Cyclotron Antenna (TOPICA) code has been used to simulate the real 3D geometry of two launchers, generally operating at 30 MHz and presently installed on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The working frequency belongs to the Ion-Cyclotron range of frequencies that was proven to achieve very efficient plasma heating. Abstract: The aim of the Tore Supra tokamak is to address physics and technology issues of long pulse discharges. For this purpose, Tore Supra is equipped with two actively cooled Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) antennas (f = 3.7GHz), designed to operate in 1000s long pulses. One of these is the recently installed passive active multijunction (PAM) antenna, whose design is chosen for an LHCD system for ITER. The first experiments with the PAM antenna in Tore Supra have shown extremely encouraging results in terms of reflection coefficient behaviour and power handling. The maximum power and energy reached on the PAM, after ~500 pulses on plasma, was 2.7MW during 78s (exceeding 200MJ injected energy). In addition, 2.7MW has been coupled at a plasma‐antenna distance of 10cm. The coupling behaviour on the PAM, characterised by the fraction of reflected power (RC), shows good agreement with the predictions from the ALOHA coupling code. Abstract: A 20 MW/5 GHz Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) system was initially due to be commissioned and used for the second mission of ITER, i.e. the Q = 5 steady state target. Though not part of currently planned procurement phase, it is now under consideration for an earlier delivery. An LH program has been initiated under EFDA, following the ITER STAC recommendation, to provide a pre‐design document including the conceptual design, costing, possible procurement allocation, WBS and R&D needs.

Abstract: An overview of the Frascati tokamak upgrade (FTU) results during the period 2000-2002 is presented. Long duration internal transport barriers (ITBs) have been obtained on FTU with combined injection of lower hybrid (LH) and electron cyclotron (EC) waves in 5 T/0.5 MA discharges. The ITB phase lasts about 10 energy confinement times and is characterized by an energy confinement time up to 1.6 times the ITER97 L-mode scaling. Temperatures up to I I keV are measured at 0.9 x 10(20) m(-3) central density. ITB studies using IBW injection have also been continued up to 8 T/0.8 MA. The LH system has operated at full power allowing us to complete the current drive (CD) studies at ITER-relevant densities. At these density values the electrons and ions are coupled and an increase in the ion temperature is clearly observed. A preliminary sign of enhanced CD efficiency has been obtained in the combined injection of EC and LH waves at magnetic field values lower than the resonant field for thermal EC absorption. Pellet optimization studies have been performed in order to test the conditions under which a quasi-steady-state confinement improvement can be obtained and impurity accumulation can be avoided. The confinement time in Ohmic discharges is generally in agreement with the ITER97 L-mode scaling. Transient confinement improvement is observed for a duration less than one energy confinement time. Radiation improved mode studies have been started thanks to the recently inserted boronization system, which has allowed reduction of the radiated power. Abstract: High field pellet fuelled discharges in FTU have achieved good energy and particle confinement properties in ohmic quasi-steady regime. Peak densities close to 1x1021 m-3 have been obtained, showing a post pellet decay time of several energy confinement times. Experiments aimed at obtaining Radiative Improved Modes (RIM) at high field have also been carried out using Neon injection. We have observed an increase of average density with respect to the reference discharge, which cannot be explained by the contribution of Neon. The neutron yield increases also by a factor 3- 6 and the energy confinement time increases by a factor 1.4

Abstract: LH is considered to be used in ITER-FEAT steady-state scenario thanks to its highest current drive efficiency in the plasma outer part. The design of a 5 GHz, 20 MW CW LH system has been realised. That relies on a transmitter of 24 1-MW klystrons, and a circular oversized 60-m long transmission line feeding an antenna, based on the passive active multijunction concept. In order to have a high reliability, the power density is limited to 33 MW/m2. After the system description, the results of different studies are given: RF computation, launcher coupling properties, thermal analysis, mechanical stress caused by disruption, neutron activation, acceleration of electrons in the antenna near field.

Abstract: First pass absorption of the Lower Hybrid waves in thermonuclear devices like ITER and DEMO is modelled by coupling the ray tracing equations for the wave phase and amplitude with the quasi-linear evolution of the electron distribution function. A system of coupled ordinary differential equations for each Fourier component of the spectrum radiated by the LH antenna is derived and solved when considering both 1D/2D Fokker-Planck model for the electron distribution function. This allows to reconstruct and to evolve the quasi-linear diffusion coefficient consistently with the wave propagation, to calculate the power deposition profile and the amount of current driven by the wave. As usually assumed, the Lower Hybrid Current Drive is not effective in a plasma of a tokamak fusion reactor like ITER or DEMO, because the high electron temperature would enhance the wave absorption and then limit the RF power deposition to the very periphery of the plasma column (near the separatrix). In this work by extensively using this self-consistent modelling for the propagation and absorption of the LH wave, a parametric study on the wave spectrum (and consequently on the antenna design) as spectrum width, peak value, secondary lobes etc. has been performed very accurately. Such a careful investigation aims at controlling the power deposition layer possibly in the external half radius of the plasma, thus providing a valuable aid to the solution of how to control the plasma current profile in a toroidal magnetic configuration. This analysis is useful not only for exploring the possibility of profile control of a pulsed operation reactor, but also in order to reconsider the feasibility of steady state regime.

Abstract: Good coupling of the LH power during the whole internal transport barrier (ITB) phase has been achieved in JET by fitting the plasma shape to the LH antenna shape and by injecting CD4 gas from a pipe near to the LH grill. No adverse effect on the edge pedestal or on the ITB quality, or significant impurity influx is observed. The key is the low ionization potential of all the CD4 dissociation chain, which is completed inside the SOL. Promising perspectives are open for injecting safely LHCD with more power during an ITB.

Abstract: Transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE) using antiblastic agents in association with occlusion of tumour-feeding arteries seems currently to be the most suitable treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) larger than 3 cm in diameter. From July 1989 to January 1991, 21 patients with HCC and a previous history of liver cirrhosis were treated by TACE. The drugs used were doxorubicin and mitomycin C mixed with Lipiodol UF. The arterial occlusion was obtained using Gelfoam or Spongostan particles; in 16 patients it was limited to tumour-feeding arteries to avoid diffuse parenchymal liver damage, while in 5 patients either the main right or left hepatic artery was embolised. Three patients were excluded from the study after TACE because of too short a follow-up; 4/18 died within 3–9 months and 14/18 are still alive with follow-up ranging from 3 to 19 months. A tumour size reduction of more than 50% was observed in 9 patients (50%), with a median survival of 9.8 months. Transient and well-controlled side effects (fever, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting) were related to the post-embolisation syndrome and could be reduced by using a superselective occlusion procedure.

Abstract: Two hundred and seventy-nine consecutive patients referred for transient loss of consciousness, compatible with syncope, underwent head-up tilt to 70 degrees during polygraphic (EEG, ECG, pneumographic) and blood pressure monitorings. Vasovagal syncopes occurred in 28 patients with the following EEG changes: progressive slowing until the appearance of middle or high amplitude delta waves generalized and synchronous in 9 patients; delta waves suddenly followed by transient flattening of EEG activity in 16 patients. In 2 patients EEG could not be interpreted because of muscle and/or movement artifacts. Fifteen out of 28 patients exhibited a marked cardioinhibition, expressed by long-lasting cardiac pauses; a relationship between duration of EEG flat and duration of asystole was not found.

Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract: The active control of the radial current density profile is one of the major issues of thermonuclear fusion energy research based on magnetic confinement. The lower hybrid current drive could in principle be used as an efficient tool. However, previous understanding considered the electron temperature envisaged in a reactor at the plasma periphery too large to allow penetration of the coupled radio frequency (RF) power due to strong Landau damping. In this work, we present new numerical results based on quasilinear theory, showing that the injection of power spectra with different widths of the main lobe produce an RF-driven current density profile spanning most of the outer radial half of the plasma ( is the refractive index in a parallel direction to the confinement magnetic field). Plasma kinetic profiles envisaged for the DEMO reactor are used as references. We demonstrate the robustness of the modeling results concerning the key role of the spectral width in determining the lower hybrid-driven current density profile. Scans of plasma parameters are extensively carried out with the aim of excluding the possibility that any artefact of the utilised numerical modeling would produce any novelty. We neglect here the parasitic effect of spectral broadening produced by linear scattering due to plasma density fluctuations, which mainly occurs for low magnetic field devices. Abstract: La Lucania è una delle regioni fotograficamente meno rappresentate d'Italia, nel periodo fino alla metà del XX secolo. Successivamente conosce una grande atten-zione da parte di fotografi e di intellettuali, che la individuano come uno dei "to-poi" dell'arretratezza meridionale. In particolare la ricerca di De Martino si vale ampiamente di strumenti visivi coinvolgendo alcuni dei più noti fotografi italiani del tempo nel lavoro di documentazione. Ma anche successivamente la Lucania entra nell'immaginario visivo del paese, anche con proiezioni a livello internazio-nale, dato che interessa anche alcuni famosi fotografi stranieri, come Henri Car-tier-Bresson. Il saggio ricerca i precedenti della costruzione dell'immagine della Lucania nella prima metà del secolo XX, verificando sia l'attenzione verso la regione da parte dei grandi fotografi editori di livello nazionale, sia la sua presenza nella editoria foto-grafica specializzata di livello nazionale.

Abstract: FAST is a new machine proposed to support ITER experimental exploitation as well as to anticipate DEMO relevant physics and technology. FAST is aimed at studying, under burning plasma relevant conditions, fast particle (FP) physics, plasma operations and plasma wall interaction in an integrated way. FAST has the capability to approach all the ITER scenarios significantly closer than the present day experiments using deuterium plasmas. The necessity of achieving ITER relevant performance with a moderate cost has led to conceiving a compact tokamak (R = 1.82 m, a = 0.64 m) with high toroidal field (B(T) up to 8.5 T) and plasma current (I(p) up to 8 MA). In order to study FP behaviours under conditions similar to those of ITER, the project has been provided with a dominant ion cyclotron resonance heating system (ICRH; 30 MW on the plasma). Moreover, the experiment foresees the use of 6 MW of lower hybrid (LHCD), essentially for plasma control and for non-inductive current drive, and of electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH, 4 MW) for localized electron heating and plasma control. The ports have been designed to accommodate up to 10 MW of negative neutral beams (NNBI) in the energy range 0.5-1 MeV. The total power input will be in the 30-40 MW range under different plasma scenarios with a wall power load comparable to that of ITER (P/R similar to 22 MW m(-1)). All the ITER scenarios will be studied: from the reference H mode, with plasma edge and ELMs characteristics similar to the ITER ones (Q up to approximate to 1.5), to a full current drive scenario, lasting around 170s. The first wall (FW) as well as the divertor plates will be of tungsten in order to ensure reactor relevant operation regimes. The divertor itself is designed to be completely removable by remote handling. This will allow us to study (in view of DEMO) the behaviour of innovative divertor concepts, such as those based on liquid lithium. FAST is capable of operating with very long pulses, up to 170s, despite being a copper machine. The magnets initial operation temperature is 30 K, with cooling provided by helium gas. The in vessel components, namely FW and divertor, are actively cooled by pressurized water above 80 degrees C. The same water is also used to bake the vacuum vessel. FAST is equipped with ferromagnetic inserts to keep the toroidal field magnet ripple down to 0.3%.

Abstract: Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the general population older than 18 years of age in a southern Italian town., Methods: The survey was conducted from July 2005 through January 2007 in Putignano, Bari, Apulia. A random 1:5 sampling from the list of records maintained by general practitioners was used. Serology for HCV, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc), and genotyping for HCV were performed., Results: Of a total of 2,195 serum samples tested, 58 (2.6%) were positive for anti-HCV antibodies. The prevalence increased from 1% in subjects aged <30 years to 7.7% in those aged 70 years and was similar in both males and females (3.1 vs. 2.4%, P=0.4). Approximately one-third of 58 positive subjects also showed alanine transaminase levels and 53.5% tested positive for HCV RNA by TaqMan PCR. Genotypes 2a and 1b were represented in 21 and 10 subjects, respectively. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, age (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.05; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03-1.07), blood transfusion (adjusted OR 3.3; 95% CI: 1.7-6.3), and household contact with HCV-infected individuals (adjusted OR 4.8; 95% CI: 1.8-13.1) were the independent variables predictive of HCV infection. The overall HBsAg and anti-HBc prevalence rates were 0.5 and 12%, respectively., Conclusions: This survey confirms that HCV infection is clearly also declining in southern Italy, especially among the elderly. HCV genotype 2a predominates, reflecting the current epidemiology of HCV in Italy. Age, blood transfusion, and household contact with HCV-infected individuals may have had a role in the spread of HCV infection.

Abstract: Two hundred and seventy-nine consecutive patients referred for transient loss of consciousness, compatible with syncope, underwent head-up tilt to 70 degrees during polygraphic (EEG, ECG, pneumographic) and blood pressure monitorings. Vasovagal syncopes occurred in 28 patients with the following EEG changes: progressive slowing until the appearance of middle or high amplitude delta waves generalized and synchronous in 9 patients; delta waves suddenly followed by transient flattening of EEG activity in 16 patients. In 2 patients EEG could not be interpreted because of muscle and/or movement artifacts. Fifteen out of 28 patients exhibited a marked cardioinhibition, expressed by long-lasting cardiac pauses; a relationship between duration of EEG flat and duration of asystole was not found.

The Authors present the clinical and technical aspects of subclavian artery PTA.
