1. Unveiling new quantum phases in the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu2(BO3)2 up to the saturation magnetic field

Abstract

Abstract Under magnetic fields, quantum magnets often undergo exotic phase transitions with various kinds of order. The discovery of a sequence of fractional magnetization plateaus in the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu2(BO3)2 has played a central role in the high-field research on quantum materials, but so far this system could only be probed up to half the saturation value of the magnetization. Here, we report the first experimental and theoretical investigation of this compound up to the saturation magnetic field of 140 T and beyond. Using ultrasound and magnetostriction techniques combined with extensive tensor-network calculations (iPEPS), several spin-supersolid phases are revealed between the 1/2 plateau and saturation (1/1 plateau). Quite remarkably, the sound velocity of the 1/2 plateau exhibits a drastic decrease of -50%, related to the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic instability of the checkerboard-type magnon crystal. The unveiled nature of this paradigmatic quantum system is a new milestone for exploring exotic quantum states of matter emerging in extreme conditions.

2. Emergence of Classical Magnetic Order from Anderson Towers: Quantum Darwinism in Action

Abstract

Environment is assumed to play a negative role in quantum mechanics, destroying the coherence in a quantum system and, thus, randomly changing its state. However, for a quantum system that is initially in a degenerate ground state, the situation could be different. In this case, the infinite manifold of ground state eigenfunctions can contain a few states of zero entanglement, which can be demonstrated based on the minimization of the von Neumann entropy. Then, following quantum Darwinism, these “classical” combinations are selected and promoted by the quantum environment, which means that different independent observers find them in experiments. In this work, we find and explore such classical states in the eigenspectra of skyrmionic and antiferromagnetic quantum systems starting from a numerical realization of Anderson’s tower of states. The degeneracy of the quantum ground state is shown to be the key for explaining nontrivial properties of magnetic matter in the classical world including topological protection arising in the classical limit.

3. Time-reversal symmetry breaking Abelian chiral spin liquid in Mott phases of three-component fermions on the triangular lattice

Abstract

We provide numerical evidence in favor of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the concomitant appearance of an Abelian chiral spin liquid for three-component fermions on the triangular lattice described by an SU(3) symmetric Hubbard model with hopping amplitude −t(t>0) and on-site interaction U. This chiral phase is stabilized in the Mott phase with one particle per site in the presence of a uniform π flux per plaquette, and in the Mott phase with two particles per site without any flux. Our approach relies on effective spin models derived in the strong-coupling limit in powers of t/U for general SU(N) and arbitrary uniform charge flux per plaquette, which are subsequently studied using exact diagonalizations and variational Monte Carlo simulations for N=3, as well as exact diagonalizations of the SU(3) Hubbard model on small clusters. Up to third order in t/U, and for the time-reversal symmetric cases (flux 0 or π), the low-energy description is given by the J-K model with Heisenberg coupling J and real ring exchange K. The phase diagram in the full J-K parameter range contains, apart from three already known, magnetically long-range ordered phases, two previously unreported phases: (i) a lattice nematic phase breaking the lattice rotation symmetry and (ii) a spontaneous time-reversal and parity symmetry breaking Abelian chiral spin liquid. For the Hubbard model, an investigation that includes higher-order itinerancy effects supports the presence of a phase transition inside the insulating region, occurring at (t/U)_{c}≈0.07[(U/t)_{c}≈13] between the three-sublattice magnetically ordered phase at small t/U and this Abelian chiral spin liquid.

Abstract

BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical applied magnetic field required to close the dimer spin gap and induce magnetic order, which exceeds 23 T, has to date precluded any kind of neutron scattering investigation. However, the HFM/EXED instrument at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin made this possible at magnetic fields up to 25.9 T. Thus we have used HFM/EXED to investigate the field-induced ordered phase, in particular to look for quasi-2D physics arising from the layered structure and from the different bilayer types. From neutron diffraction data, we determined the global dependence of the magnetic order parameter on both magnetic field and temperature, finding a form consistent with 3D quantum critical scaling; from this we deduce that the quasi-2D interactions and nonuniform layering of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ are not anisotropic enough to induce hallmarks of 2D physics. From neutron spectroscopy data, we measured the dispersion of the strongly Zeeman-split magnetic excitations, finding good agreement with the zero-field interaction parameters of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$. We conclude that HFM/EXED allowed a significant extension in the application of neutron scattering techniques to the field range above 20 T and in particular opened new horizons in the study of field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions., 19 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We investigate manifestations of topological order in monoaxial helimagnet Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ by performing transport measurements on ultra-thin crystals. Upon sweeping the magnetic field perpendicularly to the helical axis, crystals thicker than one helix pitch (48 nm) but much thinner than the magnetic domain size ($\sim$1 $\mu$m) are found to exhibit sharp and hysteretic resistance jumps. We show that these phenomena originate from transitions between topological sectors with different number of magnetic solitons. This is confirmed by measurements on crystals thinner than 48 nm --in which the topological sector cannot change-- that do not exhibit any jump or hysteresis. Our results show the ability to deterministically control the topological sector of finite-size Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ and to detect inter-sector transitions by transport measurements., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

An overview is presented of the progress since 2021 in the construction and scientific programme preparation of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility. Licensing for building construction has been granted at the end of 2021. Licensing for Cat. A radiologic source has been also granted in 2022. The construction of the toroidal field magnet system is progressing. The prototype of the 170 GHz gyrotron has been produced and it is now under test on the FALCON facility. The design of the vacuum vessel, the poloidal field coils and the civil infrastructures has been completed. The shape of the first DTT divertor has been agreed with EUROfusion to test different plasma and exhaust scenarios: single null, double null, X-divertor and negative triangularity plasmas. A detailed research plan is being elaborated with the involvement of the EUROfusion laboratories.

Abstract

The generalized Holstein-Primakoff transformation is used to develop a quantum flavor wave theory for spin systems with orbital degeneracy. Elementary excitations of ordered ground states consist of spin, orbital, and spin-orbital waves. Spin and spin-orbital waves couple to each other due to orbital anisotropy and Hund's rule, resulting in modes observable by inelastic neutron scattering. In the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ limit, flavor waves are dispersionless along one or more directions, and give rise to quantum fluctuations of reduced dimensionality.

Abstract

The strong coupling limit of one-dimensional correlated systems is nontrivial, but simple in some sense. Here we demonstrate it, discussing the wave functions for the 1D U→ +∞ Hubbard model, which are factorized as a direct product of the charge part and the spin part and determining the one-particle spectral functions explicitly.

Abstract

The $S=\frac{1}{2}$ chain-boundary excitations occurring in the Haldane phase of $S=1$ antiferromagnetic spin chains are investigated. The bilinear-biquadratic Hamiltonian is used to study these excitations as a function of the strength of the biquadratic term, \ensuremath{\beta}, between $\ensuremath{-}1l~\ensuremath{\beta}l~1.$ At the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki point, $\ensuremath{\beta}=\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{3},$ we show explicitly that these excitations are localized at the boundaries of the chain on a length scale equal to the correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}=1/\mathrm{ln}3$, and that the on-site magnetization for the first site is $〈{S}_{1}^{z}〉=\frac{2}{3}.$ Applying the density matrix renormalization group we show that the chain-boundary excitations remain localized at the boundaries for $\ensuremath{-}1l\ensuremath{\beta}l1.$ As the two critical points \ensuremath{\beta}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1 are approached the size of the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ objects diverges and their amplitude appears to vanish.

We present magnetic-susceptibility measurements on ${\mathrm{MgV}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{5}$, a compound in which the vanadium oxide planes have the same topology as in ${\mathrm{CaV}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{5}$. The most striking property is that there is an energy gap of about 15 K, much smaller than in ${\mathrm{CaV}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{5}$, where the values reported are of the order of 500 K. We show that this may be understood naturally in terms of the phase diagram of the frustrated coupled ladder system. This analysis leads to the prediction that ${\mathrm{MgV}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{5}$ should have incommensurate dynamic spin fluctuations.

Abstract

We present a theoretical study of the magnetic phase diagram of the frustrated coupled ladder structure realized recently in several materials. This system displays a nondegenerate spin-gap state in the dimer limit and an infinitely degenerate spin-gap state in the regime of weakly coupled zigzag chains. Between these we demonstrate the existence of gapless, magnetically ordered regions whose order is antiferromagnetic close to the honeycomb lattice limit, and incommensurate along the chains when all three magnetic interactions compete.

Abstract

We study the magnetic properties of the ${\mathrm{La}}_{1.85}$${\mathrm{Sr}}_{0.15}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ system (x=0--0.1) in the vicinity of the metal-insulator (MI) transition using static-susceptibility measurements and the electron-spin resonance (ESR) of the Fe ions. Spin-glass (SG) freezing is present for all nonsuperconducting specimens. The iron ESR line broadens on approaching the freezing temperature, similarly to the effect observed in canonical spin glasses. This broadening can be attributed to the influence of the slowing down of spin fluctuations on the spin-spin relaxation rate. It depends differently on x on the two different sides of the MI transition suggesting the existence of two different SG phases: insulating (ISG) where the Fe spins couple to the Cu-spin array by superexchange interactions, and metallic (MSG), where there exists, in addition, Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida-like coupling mediated by the free carriers. The proximity of the MI transition suppresses this coulping, giving rise to the observed dependence of the paramagnet -SG phase boundary on x. In the MSG phase, at high temperatures, the spin-lattice relaxation mechanism is also mediated by the free carriers. It differs from the analogous process observed in conventional metals in that the ESR linewidth increases with increasing T faster than linearly. We explain this behavior by assuming that the effective magnetic field felt by the Fe moments originates mainly from the spins of holes located on the nearest-neighbor oxygen ions. The linewidth divided by T which probes the dynamical susceptibility at the Fe site varies as a+bT. Here a goes to zero as the MI transition is approached and so plays the role of the Pauli susceptibility of the free carriers, whereas b is independent of x in the vicinity of the MI transition but decreases for small Fe dopings away from the MI transition and may be identified as originating from the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the system.

We study the quantum renormalization of the spin-wave spectrum and of the magnetization in the 2d antiferromagnetic J1-J2 model in the large-S limit. We compare linear spin-wave, first-order spin-wave and Schwinger boson mean-field theories and show that the last two agree to order 1/S for any J2/J1, whereas linear spin-wave theory becomes qualitatively wrong in the region of strong frustration (J2/J1 almost-equal-to 1/2). The main consequence, namely the possibility of stabilizing long-range order by quantum fluctuations, is emphasized in a related example, the ferromagnetic J1-J2-J3 model. The compatibility of these results with numerical studies of the S = 1/2 case is discussed.

We analyze the stability of Neel and collinear orders for the frustrated {ital J}{sub 1}-{ital J}{sub 2} model on a square lattice as a function of {ital S} and {ital J}{sub 2}/{ital J}{sub 1} within the Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. For Neel order and {ital finite} {ital S}, the domain of stability extends beyond the classical boundary {ital J}{sub 2}/{ital J}{sub 1}=1/2, suggesting the possibility of stabilizing (with the help of quantum fluctuations) a state that is classically forbidden. We use the solution with short-range Neel order as an effective model for the magnetic properties of high-{ital T}{sub {ital c}} Cu oxides. Predictions are made for the static susceptibility, the dynamical structure factor, and the nuclear relaxation rates (all observable experimentally) at all temperatures. We show that the spin waves are overdamped even at low {ital T} and that a gap opens in the spin-fluctuation spectrum. The susceptibility is nearly linear on a wide intermediate temperature range and obeys a Curie law at high temperature in agreement with 1/{ital N} fermionic expansion.

Abstract

The high T c superconductors have one structural element in common, namely CuO 2 planes which are lightly doped away from an average valence of Cu 2+ . In the absence of this doping the planes are in a Mott insulating state with local S = 1/2 moments on each Cu-site. There is considerable evidence both experimental and theoretical supporting the assignment of the extra holes, introduced by doping, to the antibonding O 2p-orbitals. The strong hybridization between these orbitals and the central Cu 3d-orbitals makes it favourable to bind the extra hole with a Cu 2+ local moment to form a spin singlet state centred on a CuO 4 square. This singlet, however, is mobile and the combination of mobile charged singlets and local spins is described by the so-called t-J model. This has a number of consequences which can be tested experimentally. For example, one can use this model to estimate the hyperfine coupling constants which are measured in NMR experiments. The prediction that the only spin degrees of freedom are the local Cu 2+ spins even upon doping can also be tested in NMR experiments.

We use the Schwinger-boson mean-field theory to study the spin dynamics of Heisenberg magnets in which quantum (finite {ital S}) fluctuations have destroyed the classical Neel long-range order. The low-temperature physics is dominated by the zone-center gap {Delta}({ital T}) which remains finite as {ital T}{r arrow}0. The effect of this {ital T}-dependent low-energy cutoff on the magnetic response functions (susceptibilty, structure factor, relaxation rates) is analyzed. We use this model to discuss the validity of a description of antiferromagnetic fluctuations in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6+{ital x}} in terms of local moments.

22. Field-induced staggered magnetization and magnetic ordering in Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4

Abstract

We present a 2D NMR investigation of the gapped spin-1/2 compound Cu2(C5H10N2D2)2Cl4. Our measurements reveal the presence of a magnetic field-induced transverse staggered magnetization (TSM) which persists well below and above the field-induced 3D long-range magnetically ordered (FIMO) phase. The symmetry of this TSM is different from that of the TSM induced by the order parameter of the FIMO phase. Its origin, field dependence, and symmetry can be explained by an intradimer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, as shown by DMRG calculations on a spin-1/2 ladder. This leads us to predict that the transition into the FIMO phase is not in the BEC universality class.

Abstract

Rubber is well known as the basic material for some structural devices, such as seaport fenders and seismic isolators. In practice, to seismically isolate a structure it is necessary to interpose between the foundation and the superstructure a rubber device that increases the period of the superstructure, a feature that allows the structure to be ''transparent'' to the seismic excitation. A seismic isolator is constituted typically by a package of several rubber pads 1–2 cm thick vertically interspersed with either steel laminas or FRP dry textiles suitably treated. In this latter case the isolator is called FREI (Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric Isolator). FREIs exhibit light weight, easy installation and low cost. In this study, recycled rubber in the form of reactivated EPDM has been used to produce very low cost FREIs, combined with glass fiber reinforcement. To be ready for structural application, the rubber used must be vulcanized correctly to properly create the polymer crosslinking. However, all rubber mechanical properties are strongly affected by curing temperature and curing time. Here, the mechanical properties of a typology of FREI conceived and produced by the authors in prototypes are evaluated through a series of experimental tests and numerical computations, taking into account the different levels of vulcanization degree. Shore A hardness test, uniaxial tensile test, and relaxation test have been conducted and verified through Finite Element (FE) modeling. All collected data allow to precisely determine the curing time and temperature to use in the industrial production to obtain optimal output mechanical properties for FREIs.

24. Infusion of Non-HLA-Matched Off-the-Shelf Ex Vivo Expanded Cord Blood Progenitors in Patients Undergoing Cord Blood Transplantation: Result of a Phase II Clinical Trial

Abstract

Recipients of myeloablative cord blood transplants (CBT) are known to experience delayed hematopoietic recovery and an increased risk of transplant related mortality (TRM). We developed methods for ex vivo expansion and cryopreservation of CB stem and progenitor cells. 15 patients with hematologic malignancies were enrolled in this single center phase II trial between September 2010 and August 2012 to assess the safety of infusing a non-HLA-matched expanded CB product to bolster a conventional CBT. On the day of transplant, an infusion of the expanded CB product followed the primary graft (1 or 2 unmanipulated CB units). All patients engrafted. Median time to neutrophil and platelet recovery was 19 and 35 days, respectively. Early myelomonocytic recovery was almost entirely due to cells arising from the non-HLA-matched expansion product and were no longer detected at day 14 in all but 2 patients. The probability of 3-years disease free survival was 86%. No TRM was observed throughout the study period, and only 2 patients relapsed. All patients presented with grade II acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) at a median time of 32 days, with no grade III-IV aGVHD observed. At 2 years only 2 patients remain on immunosuppressive therapy for mild chronic GVHD. This phase II safety study demonstrate that infusion of an off-the-shelf non-HLA-matched expanded CB product in addition to a conventional CB graft was safe and led to sustained myeloid recovery. Based on these encouraging results, a prospective multicenter randomized trial utilizing this product has been conducted and results will be soon released. 25. Low-dimensional spin S = 1/2 system at the quantum critical limit: Na2V3O7

Abstract

We report the results of measurements of the dc susceptibility and the 23Na-NMR response of Na2V3O7, a recently synthesized, nonmetallic low dimensional spin system. Our results indicate that, upon reducing the temperature to below 100 K, the V4+ moments are gradually quenched, leaving only one moment out of nine active. The NMR data reveal a phase transition at very low temperatures. With decreasing applied field H, the critical temperature shifts towards T=0 K, suggesting that Na2V3O7 may be regarded as an insulator reaching a quantum critical point at H=0.

Thermodynamic experiments as well as Raman scattering have been used to study the magnetic instabilities in the spin-tetrahedra systems Cu(2)Te(2)O(5)X(2), X = Cl and Br. While the phase transition observed in the Cl system at T(N) = 18.2 K is consistent with 3D antiferromagnetic ordering, the phase transition at T(o) = 11.4 K in the Br system has several unusual features. We propose an explanation in terms of weakly coupled tetrahedra with a singlet-triplet gap and low-lying singlets.

Abstract

One--particle interchain hopping in a system of coupled Luttinger liquids is investigated by use of exact diagonalizations techniques. Firstly, the two chains problem of spinless fermions is studied in order to see the behaviour of the band splitting as a function of the exponent $\alpha$ which characterizes the $1D$ Luttinger liquid. Moderate intra-chain interactions can lead to a strong reduction of this splitting. The on-set of the confinement within the individual chains (defined by a vanishing splitting) seems to be governed by $\alpha$. We give numerical evidence that inter-chain coherent hopping can be totally suppressed for $\alpha\sim 0.4$ or even smaller $\alpha$ values. The transverse conductivty is shown to exhibit a strong incoherent part. Even when coherent inter-chain hopping is believed to occur (at small $\alpha$ values), it is shown that the coherent Drude weight is always significantly smaller than the incoherent weight. IntroductionCord blood transplantation (CBT) recipients are at increased risk of mortality due to delayed immune recovery (IR). Prior studies in CBT patients have shown that recovery of absolute lymphocyte count is predictive of survival after transplant. However, there are no data on the association of T-cell receptor (TCR) and clinical outcomes after CBT. Here we retrospectively performed TCR beta chain sequencing on peripheral blood (PB) samples of 34 CBT patients.MethodsAll patients received a total body irradiation based conditioning regimen and cyclosporine and MMF were used for graft versus host disease (GvHD) prophylaxis. PB was collected pretransplant on days 28, 56, 80, 180, and 1-year posttransplant for retrospective analysis of IR utilizing high-throughput sequencing of TCRβ rearrangements from genomic DNA extracted from PB mononuclear cells. To test the association between TCR repertoire diversity and patient outcomes, we conducted a permutation test on median TCR repertoire diversity for patients who died within the first year posttransplant versus those who survived.ResultsMedian age was 27 (range 1–58 years) and most of the patients (n = 27) had acute leukemias. There were 15 deaths occurring between 34 to 335 days after transplant. Seven deaths were due to relapse. Rapid turnover of T cell clones was observed at each time point, with TCR repertoires stabilizing by 1-year posttransplant. TCR diversity values at day 100 for patients who died between 100 and 365 days posttransplant were significantly lower than those of the surviving patients (p = 0.01).ConclusionsUsing a fast high-throughput TCR sequencing assay we have demonstrated that high TCR diversity is associated with better patient outcomes following CBT. Importantly, this assay is easily performed on posttransplant PB samples, even as early as day 28 posttransplant, making it an excellent candidate for early identification of patients at high risk of death.

33. GURU v2.0: An interactive Graphical User interface to fit rheometer curves in Han’s model for rubber vulcanization

Abstract

A GUI software (GURU) for experimental data fitting of rheometer curves in Natural Rubber (NR) vulcanized with sulphur at different curing temperatures is presented. Experimental data are automatically loaded in GURU from an Excel spreadsheet coming from the output of the experimental machine (moving die rheometer). To fit the experimental data, the general reaction scheme proposed by Han and co-workers for NR vulcanized with sulphur is considered. From the simplified kinetic scheme adopted, a closed form solution can be found for the crosslink density, with the only limitation that the induction period is excluded from computations. Three kinetic constants must be determined in such a way to minimize the absolute error between normalized experimental data and numerical prediction. Usually, this result is achieved by means of standard least-squares data fitting. On the contrary, GURU works interactively by means of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to minimize the error and allows an interactive calibration of the kinetic constants by means of sliders. A simple mouse click on the sliders allows the assignment of a value for each kinetic constant and a visual comparison between numerical and experimental curves. Users will thus find optimal values of the constants by means of a classic trial and error strategy. An experimental case of technical relevance is shown as benchmark. 34. Management of hypoparathyroidism in pregnancy and lactation — A report of 10 cases

Abstract

Introduction: Hypoparathyroidism in pregnancy is rare, but important, as it is associated with maternal morbidity and foetal loss. There are limited case reports and no established management guidelines. Optimal maintenance of calcium levels during pregnancy is required to minimise the risk of related complications. This study aims to identify causes and examine outcomes of hypoparathyroidism in pregnancy in a cohort of women delivering at a large referral centre. Design and method: The Monash Health maternity service database captures pregnancy and birthing outcomes in over 9000 women each year. We audited this database between 2000 and 2014 to examine the clinical course, treatment and outcomes of pregnant women with hypoparathyroidism. Results: We identified 10 pregnancies from 6 women with pre-existing hypoparathyroidism secondary to idiopathic hypoparathyroidism (n = 3), autosomal dominant branchial arch disorder with hypoparathyroidism (n = 3) and autosomal dominant hypocalcaemia (n = 1), surgery for thyroid cancer (n = 2) and Graves' disease (n = 1). Maternal calcium levels were monitored through pregnancy and management adjusted to maintain normocalcaemia. One woman was delivered by caesarean section at 34 weeks' gestation because of intrauterine growth restriction, and oligohydramnios complicated two other pregnancies. The postpartum period was complicated by severe hypercalcaemia in one woman and by symptomatic, labile serum calcium levels during lactation in another woman, requiring close monitoring over a 6 month period. Conclusion: Although rare, hypoparathyroidism in pregnancy poses a management challenge for clinicians, and co-ordinated care is required by obstetricians and endocrinologists to ensure optimal outcomes for both mother and baby. Continued monitoring of maternal calcium levels during lactation and weaning is essential to avoid the potential complications of either hypercalcaemia or hypocalcaemia.

Abstract

For pt.I see ibid., vol.20, p.4725 (1987). A detailed application of the matching procedure is presented in order to calculate the surface phonon dispersion on Ni(100) and Ni(100)+c(2*2)-O in the (010) direction. The phonons even and odd with respect to the (010) plane are analysed with special regard to the effect of adsorbate-induced Brillouin zone (BZ) folding. Studying each phonon symmetry separately enables one to identify the respective contributions from the BZ centre and edge in the electron energy-loss spectra. The equations of motion for Ni(100)+c(2*2)-O are worked out from those for the Ni(100) case. Information on the dispersion of bulk phonons projected onto the (100) surface and the associated Van Hove singularities is obtained by solving a secular equation. The surface phonon and resonance dispersion curves are found by matching the solutions of the secular equation to the surface conditions, which amounts to studying the scattering of incoming bulk waves by the surface. The eigenvectors obtained on the (100) surface permit one to perform a perturbation treatment of the adsorbate-substrate coupling. Finally, a comparative discussion with Green-function-based techniques is given.

Abstract

The frequencies of the surface phonons and resonances are calculated as functions of the distortion in surface reconstructed Ni(100) + (2 × 2)C, at the centre of the Brillouin zone. The calculations are carried out for the two structures CcS and CcD, consistent with the observed diffraction pattern, by using different lattice dynamical models. Each phonon symmetry is dealt with separately. It is concluded that each combination of structure and lattice dynamics in the model has a signature with regard to a particular totally symmetric phonon at vanishing distortion. Comparing the calculated and measured phonon frequencies with respect to that property allows one to rule out one of the studied lattice dynamical models.

Abstract

The p4mg symmetry of the reconstructed system Ni(100)+(2×2)C is consistent with two structural models. Diffraction techniques and SEXAFS favour one of them. The alternative approach presented here which concludes on the other structural assignment is based upon an analysis of surface vibrational data. The method proceeds as follows: each structure is described by assuming that the reconstruction is due to the softening of a particular phonon at X in the C(2×2) Brillouin zone. In each case, the surface phonon and resonance dispersion curves are calculated by diagonalising at vanishing distortion a harmonic hamiltonian. Their comparison with EELS data in the reconstructed phase enables us to reach the searched assignment. The size of the anharmonic effects and the distortion amplitude are estimated from the EELS dispersion curves. They are shown not to alter the main issues of the analysis. Finally, an expert mental test of the soft phonon hypothesis is proposed.

Abstract

A structural identification of the reconstructed system Ni(100) + (2 × 2)C is given by comparing the measured surface phonon dispersion with that calculated in two structural models consistent with the diffraction pattern. The agreement obtained in one of the two cases favours a structural assignment at variance with the LEED determination. The properties of distorsive phase transitions, in terms of a frozen surface phonon, are analyzed. The crucial role of the totally symmetric phonon present at the centre of the Brillouin zone of the reconstructed phase, shown to originate from the frozen phonon at the Brillouin zone edge in the unreconstructed system, is analyzed. The analytic variations of the phonon frequencies with parametric distortion are obtained. An upper limit is deduced for the size of the reconstruction induced distortion from the vibrational data. It is found to be smaller than the estimate derived from LEED measurements.

Abstract

Adsorption of sodium on the W(100) surface is studied at room temperature by angular resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (ARUPS) and LEED. A reconstruction of the W(100) surface induced by sodium adsorption is observed at least at low coverage. The high-lying tungsten surface states situated at 0.4 eV below the Fermi level at normal emission ( Gamma ) suffer a continuous shift towards higher binding energies when sodium coverage increases. With a monolayer of sodium, the shift attains 2 instead of 1 eV for caesium. The low-lying surface state located at 4.2 eV below the Fermi level at Gamma shifts towards higher binding energies in contrast with caesium adsorption. These effects reveal a stronger sodium atom-substrate interaction than that which occurs in caesium. The description of the Cs/W(100) system may be extended to Na/W(100): the d(z2)-like surface states of W(100) hybridise with the sodium 3s valence states to form a polarised covalent bond.

Each of them is described by freezing a given surface phonon of Ni(100)+c(2*2)C into a static and periodic distortion. A structural assignment is achieved by comparing the phonon dispersion measured along the (011) direction with the calculated results for each model. The dispersion characteristics of each model are determined unambiguously by the relevant frozen phonon.

Abstract

An analytic expression for the current detected in an extended energy loss fine structure experiment in the reflection mode is derived, which takes into account the diffraction by the atoms of the crystal of the two electrons participating in the excitation process. Within a single-scattering approximation, the authors show that the signal contains two oscillating factors, one of the EXAFS type and the other, which has been neglected in all studies until now, similar to a photo-electron diffraction signal. They perform a model computation in order to show the experimental conditions in which an EXAFS-type analysis still applies and the precision in the distances that may be expected. They also propose a new type of experiment in which the detection is angularly resolved and which would allow a bond angle determination in addition to the distance determination, under specified excitation conditions.

Abstract

Phonon dispersion data on Ni(100) for the (011) direction are calculated using the matching procedure. The Rayleigh mode is shown to be a surface state over the whole of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone, and a new odd surface state is found. The Van Hove singularities are analysed in detail and a practical definition of surface resonances is given. A new initial condition describing the scattering of an incoming bulk phonon by the surface is introduced. The calculated dispersion curves of surface resonances are compared with other authors' work. Eventually a new interpretation of EELS data is proposed.

Abstract

The equations of motion are worked out for the atoms of a semi-infinite crystal covered with a commensurate adsorbate by using the clean crystal as a basis. This procedure produces a complete set of displacement fields consistent with the relevant space-group symmetry. These equations are solved with help of the matching procedure to give the surface even phonon and resonance dispersion curves in the (010) direction of Ni(1OO) covered with a C(2×2) oxygen overlayer. The consequences of the adsorbate induced folding of the Brillouin zone upon the bulk and surface phonons are analysed. Using symmetry adapted coordinates secures a straightforward identification of the loss features observed by EELS.

Abstract

The occurrence of Mott localization in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase of high-Tc Cu-oxides is analysed within a two-band Hubbard model. A phase diagram giving the degree of localization as a function of the parameters of the model is determined using the Wannier functions relative to the AF Hartree-Fock ground state. It is shown that the degree of localization depends strongly on the value of the charge-transfer gap ?, and that both situations of strong localization and itinerant magnetism are consistent with an exchange integral J?~?0.12?eV and with the range of experimental values reported for ?. Optical data and measurements of the ordered moment are also discussed within this model, giving some evidence in favour of the strong localization regime.

Abstract

We show that Knight-shift and relaxation-rate data at Cu and Y sites provide strong evidence in favor of the single-quantum-spin-fluid picture of ${\mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{6+\mathrm{x}}$. We also argue that this picture is not inconsistent with different temperature behaviors at Cu, O, and Y sites because of the strong antiferromagnetic correlations. We show explicitly that different power laws can be obtained at high temperature within the framework of a spin-wave approximation and comment on a possible gap in the spin excitation spectrum of ${\mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{6+\mathrm{x}}$ larger the ${T}_{c}$. However, this simple model does not allow a detailed account of the observed temperature dependences.

48. Comprehensive Kinetic Numerical Model for NR and High-Cis Poly-Butadiene Rubber Blends

Abstract

A simple but robust kinetic mathematical model to predict the mechanical/thermal behaviour of NR and high- cis polybutadiene rubber blends is presented. The benchmark blend is a 70% NR with 30% high-cis polybutadiene blend vulcanized in presence of sulphur at 1 phr and single accelerants TBSS or DPG at concentrations equal to 1-0 and 0-1 respectively. Experimental rheometer curves are at disposal for both the NR-PB blend and single NR/PB rubbers at 170°C and 180°C. Rheometer curves at 150°C are utilized as reversion free references to normalize experimental data. The numerical model is based on a modification of Han’s kinetic approach, where a linear interaction between NR and PB is accounted for. The determination of kinetic constants is possible by means of a constrained minimization approach that uses Sequential Quadratic Programming and fits through standard least-squares normalized rheometer curves. The procedure is benchmarked on 1-1-0 and 1-0-1 concentrations of S-TBBS-DPG at 170°C and 180°C. Quite good agreement is found against experimental data, with values of kinetic constants addressing a reduction of vulcanization rate with respect to pure NR and a beneficial reversion decrease due to PB contribution.

A new method is introduced to study the vibrational properties of large-period crystals with finite-range interactions. The phonon frequencies are given by an eigenvalue equation, the degree of which depends on the range of the interatomic coupling but not on the period. An example is treated, for which the method provides simple explicit expressions of the dispersion equation and the sound velocities.

Abstract

There is recent mounting evidence that nanoparticles may have enhanced toxicological potential in comparison to the same material in the bulk form. The aim of this study was to develop a new method for unmask asbestos nanofibers from Formalin-Fixed, Paraffin-Embedded tissue. There is an increasing amount of evidence that nanoparticles may enhance toxicological potential in comparison to the same material in the bulk form. The aim of this study was to develop a new method to unmask asbestos nanofibers from Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) tissue. For the first time, in this study we applied Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis through transmission electron microscopy to demonstrate the presence of asbestos nanofibers in histological specimens of patients with possible occupational exposure to asbestos. The diagnostic protocol was applied to 10 randomly selected lung cancer patients with no history of previous asbestos exposure. We detected asbestos nanofibers in close contact with lung cancer cells in two lung cancer patients with previous possible occupational exposure to asbestos. We were also able to identify the specific asbestos iso-type, which in one of the cases was the same rare variety used in the workplace of the affected patient. By contrast, asbestos nanofibers were not detected in lung cancer patients with no history of occupational asbestos exposure. The proposed technique can represent a potential useful tool for linking the disease to previous workplace exposure in uncertain cases. Furthermore, Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) tissues stored in the pathology departments might be re-evaluated for possible etiological attribution to asbestos in the case of plausible exposure. Since diseases acquired through occupational exposure to asbestos are generally covered by workers’ insurance in most countries, the application of the protocol used in this study may have also relevant social and economic implications.
