Au/ZrO2 catalysts (1.5 wt% Au loading) undergone to a final calcination at different temperature (423, 573, 773 and 923 K) to opportunely modulate the Au size were proven to be highly active and selective in furfural oxidative esterification to methyl-2-furoate. The catalysts were tested according to previously optimized reaction conditions, employing O2 as benign oxidant and without any base co-catalyst. The strong dependence of the catalytic activity on the Au size was previously ascribed to the presence of Au clusters able to dissociate O2 and producing atomic O that can activate methanol. However, despite the absence of clusters, also the catalysts containing larger Au nanoparticles were active, even if conversion and selectivity were remarkably lower if compared to the other samples. The nature and the role of Au active sites exposed at the surface of clusters and nanoparticles were then investigated by HR-TEM, CO chemisorption and FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO, molecular oxygen, methanol and furfural to establish structure-activity relationships. Metal nanoparticles can activate oxygen and form superoxo species and atomic O, whereas experiments performed on the pre-hydrated samples revealed that Au perimeter sites at the metal-support interface play a key role in methanol activation during furfural oxidative esterification.

Herein, we report a study on pyrolysis bio-oil upgrading from leather shaving waste to dope in situ titania (TiO 2 ) with carbon dots (cds). The cds doped TiO 2 exhibits remarkable activity as photocatalyst under solar light for the direct conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and water vapor (H 2 O) to methane (CH 4 ). Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an attractive semiconductor material for photocatalytic applications, owing to its opto-electronic properties. Its performances are, however, strongly affected by the surface and opto-electronic properties (i.e., surface composition, facets and defects), in turn related to the synthesis conditions. The knowledge on how these properties can be tuned and how they are reflected on the photocatalytic performances (activity and stability) is thus essential to achieve an active and stable material. In this work, we studied how the annealing temperature (400 °C vs. 600 °C) and the addition of a promoter (titanium dioxide, TiO 2 ) can affect the physico-chemical properties of ZnO materials, in particular surface and opto-electronic ones, prepared through a wet-chemistry method. Then, we explored the application of ZnO as a photocatalyst in CO 2 photoreduction, an appealing light-to-fuel conversion process, with the aim to understand how the above-mentioned properties can affect the photocatalytic activity and selectivity. We eventually assessed the capability of ZnO to act as both photocatalyst and CO 2 adsorber, thus allowing the exploitation of diluted CO 2 sources as a carbon source.

Background: Users' feedback is a key asset for organizations that want to improve their services. Studying how organizations are enabling their users to participate in evaluation activities is particularly important, especially when there are vulnerable or disadvantaged people, and the services to be evaluated can be life-changing. This is the case in the coassessment by pediatric patients experiencing hospital stay. The international literature reports a few attempts and several challenges in systematically collecting and using the pediatric patient experience with respect to hospitalization, to undertake quality improvement actions., Objective: This paper describes the research protocol of a European project intended to develop and implement a systematic pediatric patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) observatory that will be shared by 4 European children's hospitals in Finland, Italy, Latvia, and the Netherlands., Methods: The VoiCEs (Value of including the Children's Experience for improving their rightS during hospitalization) project uses a participatory action research approach, based on a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods. It consists of 6 different phases, including a literature review, an analysis of the previous experiences of pediatric PREMs reported by project partners, a Delphi process, a cycle of focus groups or in-depth interviews with children and their caregivers, a series of workshops with interactive working groups, and a cross-sectional observational survey. The project guarantees the direct participation of children and adolescents in the development and implementation phases of the project., Results: The expected results are (1) a deeper knowledge of published methodologies and tools on collecting and reporting pediatric patients' voice; (2) lessons learnt from the analysis of previous experiences of pediatric PREMs; a consensus reached through a participatory process (3) among experts, (4) pediatric patients and caregivers about a standard set of measures for the evaluation of hospitalization by patients; (5) the implementation of a European observatory on pediatric PREMs; and (6) the collection and comparative reporting of the pediatric patients' voice. In addition, the project is aimed at studying and proposing innovative methodologies and tools for capturing the pediatric patients' feedback directly, avoiding the intermediation of parents/guardians., Conclusions: Over the last decade, the collection and use of PREMs have gained importance as a research field. Children and adolescents' perspectives have also been increasingly taken into consideration. However, to date, there are limited experiences regarding the continuous and systematic collection and use of pediatric PREMs data for implementing timely improvement actions. This work demonstrates terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in reflection configuration on a class of inorganic and mineral pigments. The technique is validated for pictorial materials against the limitations imposed by the back-reflection of the THz signal, such as weak signal intensity, multiple signal losses and distortion, as well as the current scarce databases. This work provides a detailed description of the experimental procedure and method used for the determination of material absorption coefficient of a group of 10 pigments known to be used in ancient frescoes, that are, Cu-based (azurite, malachite, and Egyptian blue), Pb-based (minium and massicot), Fe-based (iron oxide yellow, dark ochre, hematite, and Pompeii red) pigments and mercury sulfide (cinnabar), and classified the vibrational modes of the molecular oxides and sulfides for material identification. The results of this work showed that the mild signal in reflection configuration does not limit the application of THz-TDS on inorganic and mineral pigments as long as (i) the THz signal is normalized with a highly reflective reference sample, (ii) the secondary reflected signals from inner interfaces are removed with a filtering procedure, and (iii) the limitations at high frequencies imposed by the dynamic range of the instrument are considered. Under these assumptions, we were able to differentiate molecular phases of the same metal and identify azurite, Egyptian blue, minium, and cinnabar, isolating the molecular vibrations up to 125 cm -1 . The established approach demonstrated to be reliable, and it can be extended for the study of other materials, well beyond the reach of the heritage domain.

The development of sustainable and efficient catalysts -namely Ru supported on activated biochars- is carried out for the selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 1-hydroxy-2,5-hexanedione (HHD). Activated biochars obtained from pyrolysis and steam-based physical activation of two different biomasses from animal (leather tannery waste; A Lw ) and vegetal (hazelnut shells; A HSw ) origins show completely different chemical, textural, and morphological properties. Compared to A Lw , after impregnation with 0.5 wt % Ru, A HSw , with inner micro-mesochannels and cavities and higher layer stacking disorder, leads to better trapping and anchoring of Ru nanoparticles on the catalyst and a suitable Ru single crystal dispersion. This leads to a highly active Ru/A HSw catalyst in the proposed reaction, giving more than 80 % selectivity to HHD and full HMF conversion at 100 °C with 30 bar H 2 for 3 h. Background: Patient Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) are recognized as an important indicator of high quality care and person-centeredness. PREMs are increasingly adopted for paediatric care, but there is little published evidence on how to administer, collect, and report paediatric PREMs at scale., Methods: This paper describes the development of a PREMs questionnaire and administration system for the Meyer Children's University Hospital in Florence (Meyer) and the Children's Clinical University Hospital in Riga (CCUH). The system continuously recruits participants into the electronic administration model, with surveys completed by caregivers or adolescents at their convenience, post-discharge. We analyse 1661 responses from Meyer and 6585 from CCUH, collected from 1st December 2018 to 21st January 2020. Quantitative and qualitative experience analyses are included, using Pearson chi-square tests, Fisher's exact tests and narrative evidence from free text responses., Results: The large populations reached in both countries suggest the continuous, digital collection of paediatric PREMs described is feasible for collecting paediatric PREMs at scale. Overall response rates were 59% in Meyer and 45% in CCUH. There was very low variation in mean scores between the hospitals, with greater clustering of Likert scores around the mean in CCUH and a wider spread in Meyer for a number of items. The significant majority of responses represent the carers' point of view or the perspective of children and adolescents expressed through proxy reporting by carers., Conclusions: Very similar reported scores may reflect broadly shared preferences among children, adolescents and carers in the two countries, and the ability of both hospitals in this study to meet their expectations. The model has several interesting features: inclusion of a narrative element; electronic administration and completion after discharge from hospital, with high completion rates and easy data management; access for staff and researchers through an online platform, with real time analysis and visualization; dual implementation in two sites in different settings, with comparison and shared learning. These bring new opportunities for the utilization of PREMs for more person-centered and better quality care, although further research is needed in order to access direct reporting by children and adolescents.

This work deals with the formulation of environmentally friendly, cheap, and readily-available materials for green building applications, providing the function of air purificator by improving the safety and the comfort of an indoor environment. High surface area TiO 2 -SiO 2 samples, prepared by a simple, cost effective, and scalable synthetic approach, proved to be effective in maximizing the properties of each component, i.e., the photocatalytic properties of titania and the high surface area of silica. TiO 2 was introduced onto an ordered mesoporous silica Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 (SBA-15), that is featured by interesting insulating features, by using an incipient wetness impregnation method. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated in gas phase oxidation of ethylbenzene, which was selected as model volatile organic compound (VOC) molecule. The morphological, textural and structural features along with the electronic properties, the hydrophilicity and heat capacity of the materials were investigated in depth by scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, diffuse reflectance UV-Vis, FT-IR spectroscopies, and modulated DSC (MDSC) dynamic scan. Light-driven processes can be regarded as a promising technology for chemical production within the bio-refinery concept, due to the very mild operative conditions and high selectivity of some reactions. In this work, we report copper oxide (CuO)-titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanocomposites to be efficient and selective photocatalysts for ethanol photodehydrogenation under gas phase conditions, affording 12-fold activity improvement compared to bare TiO 2 . In particular, the insertion method of the CuO co-catalyst in different TiO 2 materials and its effects on the photocatalytic activity were studied. The most active CuO co-catalyst was observed to be highly dispersed on titania surface, and highly reducible. Moreover, such high dispersion was observed to passivate some surface sites where ethanol is strongly adsorbed, thus improving the activity. This kind of material can be obtained by the proper selection of loading technique for both co-catalysts, allowing a higher coverage of photocatalyst surface (complex-precipitation in the present work), and the choice of titania material itself. Loading copper on a high surface area titania was observed to afford a limited ethanol conversion, due to its intrinsically higher reactivity affording to a strong interaction with the co-catalyst.

Catalytic conversion of actual biomass to valuable chemicals is a crucial issue in green chemistry. This review discusses on the recent approach in the levulinic acid (LA) formation from three prominent generations of biomasses. Our paper highlights the impact of the nature of different types of biomass and their complex structure and impurities, different groups of catalyst, solvents, and reaction system, and condition and all related pros and cons for this process.

A two component three degree simplex lattice experimental design was employed to evaluate the impact of different mixing fractions of TiO 2 and ZnO on an ordered mesoporous SBA-15 support for CO 2 photoreduction. It was anticipated that the combined advantages of TiO 2 and ZnO: low cost, non-toxicity and combined electronic properties would facilitate CO 2 photoreduction. The fraction of ZnO had a statistically dominant impact on maximum CO 2 adsorption ( β 2 = 22.65, p -value = 1.39 × 10 -4 ). The fraction of TiO 2 used had a statistically significant positive impact on CO ( β 1 = 9.71, p -value = 2.93 × 10 -4 ) and CH 4 ( β 1 = 1.43, p -value = 1.35 × 10 -3 ) cumulative production. A negative impact, from the interaction term between the fractions of TiO 2 and ZnO, was found for CH 4 cumulative production ( β 3 = -2.64, p -value = 2.30 × 10 -2 ). The systematic study provided evidence for the possible loss in CO 2 photoreduction activity from sulphate groups introduced during the synthesis of ZnO. Background: Violence against women represents a violation of a fundamental human right and is a significant cause of death and disability worldwide. In developing countries, this issue is particularly dramatic and in sub-Saharan Africa were reached 65% of women reporting domestic violence., Objective: In this study, we assessed the burden and pattern of domestic violence registered at Beira Central Hospital, Mozambique from 2011 to 2015., Methods: We performed a descriptive analysis of data collected at the CHB Legal Medicine Service., Results: In five years, are recorded a total amount of 1,491 admissions for domestic violence of which 1307 were females. About 80% of all female cases are represented by the 11-40 age range and, in almost 90% the aggressor was the current or past partner. More than 75% were cases of repeated violence and in more than 60% there were minors attending the phenomenon., Conclusion: It is crucial to act immediately and with a multi-disciplinary approach in order to fight domestic violence, especially against women due to its dramatic consequences as isolation, inability to work, loss of wages, lack of participation in regular activities and limited ability to care for themselves and their children.

The present paper reviews recent advances on the direct synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from different kinds of raw biomasses. In particular, in the paper HMF production from: (i) edible biomasses; (ii) non-edible lignocellulosic biomasses; (iii) food wastes (FW) have been reviewed. The different processes and catalytic systems have been reviewed and their merits, demerits and requirements for commercialisation outlined.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the comorbidity between headache and epilepsy in a large series of children with headache (1,795). Fifty-six cases (3.1%) suffered from idiopathic headache and idiopathic or cryptogenic epilepsy or unprovoked seizures. There was a strong association between migraine and epilepsy: in migraineurs (46/56) the risk of epilepsy was 3.2 times higher when compared with tension-type headache, without significant difference between migraine with and without aura (P = 0.89); children with epilepsy had a 4.5-fold increased risk of developing migraine than tension-type headache. In cases with comorbidity, focal epilepsies prevailed (43/56, 76.8%). Migraineurs affected by focal epilepsies (36/56) had a three times higher risk of having a cryptogenic epilepsy (27/36, 75%) than an idiopathic epilepsy (9/36, 25%) (P = 0.003). In migraine with aura, epilepsy preceded migraine in 71% of cases. Photosensitivity (7/56, 12.5%) and positive family history for epilepsy (22/56, 39%) were frequent in cases with comorbidity.

Gold-loaded zirconia and sulfated zirconia catalysts were tested in the low-temperature water gas shift reaction. The samples were characterized by N2 adsorption analysis, temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray diffraction, pulse-flow CO chemisorption, FTIR spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. A reference catalyst, Au/TiO2, provided by the World Gold Council was investigated for comparison. CO chemisorption and FTIR data indicate the presence of only highly dispersed gold clusters on the sulfated sample and both small clusters and small particles on the non-sulfated sample. Both gold-zirconia catalysts are much more active than the Au/TiO2 reference sample over all the temperature range investigated. The sample prepared on sulfated zirconia exhibits higher stability than the catalyst on unmodified zirconia. The prominent role in the water gas shift reaction of gold clusters in close contact with the support was deduced.
