Abstract

The MICE experiment is being commissioned at RAL to demonstrate the feasibility of the muon ionization cooling technique for future applications such as the Neutrino Factory and the Muon Collider. The cooling will be evaluated by measuring the emittance before and after the cooling channel with two 4 T spectrometers; to distinguish muons from the background, a multi-detector particle identification system is foreseen: three Time of Flight stations, two Cherenkov counters and a calorimetric system consisting of a pre-shower layer and a fully active scintillator detector (EMR) are used to discriminate muons from pions and electrons. EMR consists of 48 planes of triangular scintillating bars coupled to WLS fibers readout by single PMTs on one side and MAPMTs on the other; each plane sensible area is 1 m 2. This article deals with a small scale prototype of the EMR detector which has been used to test the MAPMT frontend electronics based on the MAROC ASIC; the tests with cosmic rays using both an analog mode and a digital readout mode are presented. Abstract

The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a detailed study of ionization cooling to evaluate the feasibility of the technique. To carry out this program, MICE requires an efficient particle-identification (PID) system to identify muons. The Electron-Muon Ranger (EMR) is a fully-active tracking-calorimeter that forms part of the PID system and tags muons that traverse the cooling channel without decaying. The detector is capable of identifying electrons with an efficiency of 98.6%, providing a purity for the MICE beam that exceeds 99.8%. The EMR also proved to be a powerful tool for the reconstruction of muon momenta in the range 100-280 MeV/$c$., 22 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

The Electron-Muon Ranger (EMR) is a fully-active tracking-calorimeter installed in the beam line of the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE). The experiment will demonstrate ionization cooling, an essential technology needed for the realization of a Neutrino Factory and/or a Muon Collider. The EMR is designed to measure the properties of low energy beams composed of muons, electrons and pions, and perform the identification particle-by-particle. The detector consists of 48 orthogonal layers of 59 triangular scintillator bars. The readout is implemented using FPGA custom made electronics and commercially available modules. This article describes the construction of the detector from its design up to its commissioning with cosmic data.

Abstract

The development of a Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) readout as an option for the TPC of the near detector of the T2K neutrino experiment is presented. The low track density and the wide range in polar angle of particles produced by neutrino interactions drive the initial choice of relatively large squared pads (8 mm) for the performance study. The physics requirements [T2K ND280 Conceptual Design Report, http://dpnc.unige.ch:8080/nu/Members/nabgrall/t2kge/t2kge_doc/cdr.pdf ] are a momentum resolution better than 10 % at 1 GeV/c and a 3 σ dE/dx separation between muons and electrons. Micro-pattern Gas Detectors (MPGDs) such as GEMs or Micromegas show several beneficial features compared to the traditional Multi-Wire Proportional Chambers. They have been tested in the HARP TPC environment at CERN. Preliminary results form the GEM tests are reported here.

Abstract

The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE), which is under construction at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), will demonstrate the principle of ionization cooling as a technique for the reduction of the phase-space volume occupied by a muon beam. Ionization cooling channels are required for the Neutrino Factory and the Muon Collider. MICE will evaluate in detail the performance of a single lattice cell of the Feasibility Study 2 cooling channel. The MICE Muon Beam has been constructed at the ISIS synchrotron at RAL, and in MICE Step I, it has been characterized using the MICE beam-instrumentation system. In this paper, the MICE Muon Beam and beam-line instrumentation are described. The muon rate is presented as a function of the beam loss generated by the MICE target dipping into the ISIS proton beam. For a 1 V signal from the ISIS beam-loss monitors downstream of our target we obtain a 30 KHz muon rate, with a neglible pion contamination in the beam. Abstract

The T2K experiment is designed to study neutrino oscillation properties by directing a high intensity neutrino beam produced at J-PARC in Tokai, Japan, towards the large Super-Kamiokande detector located 295 km away, in Kamioka, Japan. The experiment includes a sophisticated near detector complex, 280 m downstream of the neutrino production target in order to measure the properties of the neutrino beam and to better understand neutrino interactions at the energy scale below a few GeV. A key element of the near detectors is the ND280 tracker, consisting of two active scintillator–bar target systems surrounded by three large time projection chambers (TPCs) for charged particle tracking. The data collected with the tracker are used to study charged current neutrino interaction rates and kinematics prior to oscillation, in order to reduce uncertainties in the oscillation measurements by the far detector. The tracker is surrounded by the former UA1/NOMAD dipole magnet and the TPCs measure the charges, momenta, and particle types of charged particles passing through them. Novel features of the TPC design include its rectangular box layout constructed from composite panels, the use of bulk micromegas detectors for gas amplification, electronics readout based on a new ASIC, and a photoelectron calibration system. This paper describes the design and construction of the TPCs, the micromegas modules, the readout electronics, the gas handling system, and shows the performance of the TPCs as deduced from measurements with particle beams, cosmic rays, and the calibration system.

Abstract

The L3 central tracking detector has been in operation since the start-up of LEP (Large Electron Positron collider) in 1989. This detector consists of a Time Expansion Chamber (TEC), a layer of Plastic Scintillating Fibers and a Z-chamber. The TEC gives a high spatial resolution and an excellent multi-track reconstruction capability. The fibers are designed to calibrate the drift velocity with high precision. The Z-Chamber provides TEC with accurate information about the z-coordinates of the tracks. A description of the design and the infrastructure of these three detectors, including the readout and data acquisition system, is given. The performance of the detectors during the 1990 and 1991 LEP running periods is presented.

Abstract

The MICE experiment is being commissioned at RAL to study the feasibility of a Neutrino Factory: muons are cooled by a dedicated system based on radiofrequency while the particle ID is performed by a KLOE-light detector followed by EMR (Electron Muon Ranger), a fully active tracker-calorimeter positioned at the end of the beamline. EMR consists of 48 planes of 59 1.1 m long scintillator bars with a triangular section. The light in each bar is collected by one 1.2 mm WLS fiber and is readout by a single PMT (Philips XP2972) on one side to provide the information on the charge deposit in the plane and a 64 channel multianode PMT (Hamamatsu) on the other one to digitize the trigger output of each single bar. The single PMT is readout by a CAEN V1731 Waveform Digitizer, while the frontend electronics to treat the multianode signals is organized in two near-detector boards: a FEB (FrontEnd Board) and a buffer board. The FEB hosts a dedicated socket for the MAPMT, the frontend ASIC and two control FPGAs (Altera CYCLONE II) while the buffer board stores the data during the spill. The PMT is connected to the FEB through a flexible multilayer kapton cable. The 64 MAPMT signals are pre-amplified, shaped and discriminated by the MAROC-2 (Omega, LAL), a low noise single power rail ASIC with multiplexed analog and parallel digital outputs. The experiment foresees one event every 5 µs during a spill of 1 ms every 1 s. The 64 discriminated signals are sampled with a 400 MHz clock and in presence of the experiment trigger, the above threshold bars numbers are stored together with a timestamp in the buffer board to be sent to the VME DAQ system during the interspill. The communication is based on the TLK1501 Gigabit link: 6 buffer boards are daisy chained for a total of 8 VME control boards. A configuration board completes the DAQ and is responsible of the configuration of the frontend and of the distribution of the trigger and synchronization clock signals. This paper presents the tests of the electronics and its performance both with a small EMR prototype with square bars and in the test system for the mass production of the final modules.

Abstract

The L3 experiment is one of the six large detectors designed for the new generation of electron-positron accelerators. It is the only detector that concentrates its efforts on limited goals of measuring electrons, muons and photons. By not attempting to identify hadrons, L3 has been able to provide an order of magnitude better resolution for electrons, muons and photons. Vertices and hadron jets are also studied. The construction of L3 has involved much state of the art technology in new principles of vertex detection and in new crystals for large scale electromagnetic shower detection and ultraprecise muon detection. This paper presents a summary of the construction of L3.

Abstract

A large size prototype of a TPC with GEM amplification has been successfully built and operated. To obtain an active area larger than the one provided by the largest GEM foil on the market, 2 independent GEM towers have been hosted on a single pad plane minimising the dead space between the towers. This readout structure has been inserted in a test-bed available at CERN, inherited from the HARP-TPC installation at the PS East Hall, made by a cylindrical field-cage of 80 cm diameter and around 150 cm active length, all placed inside a solenoid magnet capable of 0.7 T. This setup is equipped with about 1500 readout channels. The initial choice for relatively large squared pads (8mm) is driven by the need to study the performances in view of a neutrino oscillation experiment, where the track density is low. A systematic study of the performances has been performed as a function of several parameters like the operating voltages of the GEM towers, the magnetic and the drift fields and the gas mixture. Special care has been taken in the study of the gas, with a large range of mixtures including Ar:CF4:iC4H10.

Abstract

A report on the status of the construction of the L3 Silicon Microvertex Detector is presented here. The detector will consist of two double sided AC coupled silicon layers equipped with rφ and z readout with an expected intrinsic resolution of ≈ 6 μ m and ≈ 25 μ m respectively. A description of the detector with its mechanical support, alignment system and readout electronics is presented.

Abstract

A precision measurement by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 350 GeV based on 6.8 x 10(6) positron and electron events is presented. The very accurate data show that the positron fraction is steadily increasing from 10 to similar to 250 GeV, but, from 20 to 250 GeV, the slope decreases by an order of magnitude. The positron fraction spectrum shows no fine structure, and the positron to electron ratio shows no observable anisotropy. Together, these features show the existence of new physical phenomena. Abstract

Acute Graft-versus-Host Disease (GvHD) remains a major complication of allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, with a significant proportion of patients failing to respond to first-line systemic corticosteroids. Reliable biomarkers predicting disease severity and response to treatment are warranted to improve its management. Thus, we sought to determine whether pentraxin 3 (PTX3), an acute-phase protein produced locally at the site of inflammation, could represent a novel acute GvHD biomarker. Using a murine model of the disease, we found increased PTX3 plasma levels after irradiation and at GvHD onset. Similarly, plasma PTX3 was enhanced in 115 pediatric patients on day of transplantation, likely due to conditioning, and at GvHD onset in patients experiencing clinical symptoms of the disease. PTX3 was also found increased in skin and colon biopsies from patients with active disease. Furthermore, PTX3 plasma levels at GvHD onset were predictive of disease outcome since they resulted significantly higher in both severe and therapy-unresponsive patients. Multiple injections of rhPTX3 in the murine model of GvHD did not influence the disease course. Taken together, our results indicate that PTX3 constitutes a biomarker of GvHD severity and therapy response useful to tailor treatment intensity according to early risk-stratification of GvHD patients.

Abstract

This phase I multicenter study was aimed at assessing the feasibility and safety of intravenous administration of third party bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) expanded in platelet lysate in 40 patients (15 children and 25 adults), experiencing steroid-resistant grade II to IV graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Patients received a median of 3 MSC infusions after having failed conventional immunosuppressive therapy. A median cell dose of 1.5 × 10(6)/kg per infusion was administered. No acute toxicity was reported. Overall, 86 adverse events and serious adverse events were reported in the study, most of which (72.1%) were of infectious nature. Overall response rate, measured at 28 days after the last MSC injection, was 67.5%, with 27.5% complete response. The latter was significantly more frequent in patients exhibiting grade II GVHD as compared with higher grades (61.5% versus 11.1%, P = .002) and was borderline significant in children as compared with adults (46.7 versus 16.0%, P = .065). Overall survival at 1 and 2 years from the first MSC administration was 50.0% and 38.6%, with a median survival time of 1.1 years. In conclusion, MSC can be safely administered on top of conventional immunosuppression for steroid resistant GVHD treatment.
