High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) are prospective materials for nuclear fusion reactors and were irradiated in this study at a broad range of energetic ion fluences. Different ion masses (Cu and Au ions) and energies (3 and 5 MeV) were selected to investigate dpa (displacement per atom) development, radiation defect accumulation based on prevailing collision processes (Au ions) and ionization processes (Cu ions) in various HEAs. The studied HEAs differ in terms of elemental composition, internal morphology (grain structure) and other modifiers. Dpa values of 1 to ∼66 were achieved at Cu and Au ion fluences from 4 × 1014 to 1.3 × 1016 ions.cm−2 at room temperature, which generated varying levels of lattice damage. Theoretical simulations were performed to estimate the energy stopping and dpa depth distribution using SRIM code and compared with Au-concentration depth profiles determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry for Au-ions with 3 MeV ion energy. The prevailing energy losses of ions via ionization processes for Cu-5 MeV ions were found to increase the damage through lattice strain and probable lattice distortion, although the main defect introduction is expected to occur via collisions during nuclear stopping. Structural modification and defect accumulation were investigated by positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), which revealed a broader damaged layer with defects, where HEA-Nb (NbCrFeMnNi) exhibited the least damage accumulation from chosen alloys with no strong relation to the Au-5 MeV ion implantation fluence, whereas strong defect accumulation was recorded in the Au-ion implanted Eurofer97 used for comparison and HEA-Co (CoCrFeMnNi). PAS analysis also allowed defect sizes to be determined as an additional structural characteristic. The observed trends were also confirmed by thermal property analysis, with a worsening of thermal effusivity recorded after the irradiation in HEA-Co and Eurofer97. The worsening of the thermal properties was confirmed by the layer thickness, where the layer identified by PAS was found to be broader than the SRIM theoretical predictions. Nanoindentation measurements confirmed less pronounced radiation hardening of HEA-Nb relative to that observed in HEA-Co and Eurofer97. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed layer thicknesses in reasonable agreement with the dpa depth profiles. The thermal effusivity decreased in the surface-irradiated layer in all investigated samples, the least influenced material was HEA-Nb.

This work explored possibilities of biodegradable magnesium alloy Mg-3Y preparation by two modern powder metallurgy techniques – spark plasma sintering (SPS) and selective laser melting (SLM). The powder material was consolidated by both methods utilising optimised parameters, which led to very low porosity (∼0.3%) in the SLM material and unmeasurably low porosity in the SPS material. The main aim of the study was the thorough microstructure characterisation and interrelation between the microstructure and the functional properties, such as mechanical strength, deformability, and corrosion resistance. Both materials showed comparable strength of ∼110 MPa in tension and compression and relatively good deformability of ∼9% and ∼21% for the SLM and SPS materials, respectively. The corrosion resistance of the SPS material in 0.1 M NaCl solution was superior to the SLM one and comparable to the conventional extruded material. The digital image correlation during loading and the cross-section analysis of the corrosion layers revealed that the residual porosity and large strained grains have the dominant negative effect on the functional properties of the SLM material. On the other hand, one of the primary outcomes of this study is that the SPS consolidation method is very effective in the preparation of the W3 biodegradable alloy, resulting in material with convenient mechanical and degradation properties that might find practical applications.

Electrical properties during firing of anorthite ceramic prepared from mixtures of illitic clay (from Northeastern Hungary) and fly ashes (obtained from circulating fluidized bed combustion – IA4 and pulverized firing – ID4) with high content of CaO were investigated. Mixtures were prepared with 60 wt% of illitic clay and 40 wt% of oil shale ash. The ashes were hydrated prior to mixing, to prevent the reaction of free lime with water during sample preparation. The mixtures were subjected to thermal and structural analyses to describe the processes induced by thermal treatment. The contraction of the IA4 and ID4 samples reached 1.8% and 2.5%, respectively, at 1100 °C, which is significantly lower than that of the illitic clay (7%). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a presence of diopside, gehlenite, cristobalite, and leucite minerals as additional mineral phases in the prepared anorthite ceramics. Measurement of AC conductivity showed that after the decomposition of the CaCO3 at ∼880 °C, Ca2+ ions became the dominant charge carriers, and the electrical current was carried by a hopping mechanism throughout the studied temperature region. The electrical conductivity and the relative dielectric constant of the ID4 sample was higher compared to that of the IA4 sample. The relative dielectric constant reached values of 6 (sample IA4) and 8 (sample ID4) at 140 °C (after drying).

High-enthalpy hybrid water/argon-stabilized plasma (WSP-H) torch may be used for efficient deposition of coatings from dry powders, suspensions, and solutions. WSP-H torch was used to deposit two complete thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) with multilayered top-coat. NiCrAlY was used as bond - coat and deposited on nickel-based superalloy substrates. Top-coat consisted of up to three sublayers: (i) yttria-stabilized zirconia (ZrO 2 -8 wt.%Y 2 O 3 -YSZ) deposited from solution, (ii) gadolinium zirconate (Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 -GZO) deposited from suspension, and (iii) optional yttrium aluminum garnet (Y 3 Al 5 O 12 -YAG) overlayer deposited from suspension. Each of the sublayers was intended to provide different functionalities, namely improved fracture toughness, low thermal conductivity, and high erosion resistance, respectively. High-temperature performance and thermal shock resistance of the deposited coatings were tested by thermal cycling fatigue "TCF" test (maximum temperature 1100 °C, 1 h dwell per cycle) and "laser-rig" test (maximum temperature ~ 1530 °C, 5 min dwell per cycle) exposing samples to isothermal and gradient thermal conditions, respectively. In both tests, coatings endured around 800 test cycles which shows great potential for further development of these layers and their application in demanding thermal conditions. Ceramic Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -SiO 2 coatings with near eutectic composition were plasma sprayed using hybrid water stabilized plasma torch (WSP-H). The as-sprayed coatings possessed fully amorphous microstructure which can be transformed to nanocrystalline by further heat treatment. The amorphous/crystalline content ratio and the crystallite sizes can be controlled by a specific choice of heat treatment conditions, subsequently leading to significant changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the coatings, such as hardness or wear resistance. In this study, two advanced methods of surface heat treatment were realized by plasma jet or by high energy laser heating. As opposed to the traditional furnace treatments, inducing homogeneous changes throughout the material, both approaches lead to a formation of gradient microstructure within the coatings; from dominantly amorphous at the substrate-coating interface vicinity to fully nanocrystalline near its surface. The processes can also be applied for large-scale applications and do not induce detrimental changes to the underlying substrate materials. The respective mechanical response was evaluated by measuring coating hardness profile and wear resistance. For some of the heat treatment conditions, an increase in the coating microhardness by factor up to 1.8 was observed, as well as improvement of wear resistance behaviour up to 6.5 times. The phase composition changes were analysed by X-ray diffraction and the microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy.
