Hyper-luminous Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) represent the ideal laboratory to investigate Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback mechanism since their formidable energy release causes powerful winds at all scales and thus the maximum feedback is expected. We aim at deriving the mean Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of a sample of 85 WISE-SDSS Selected Hyper-luminous (WISSH) quasars. Since the SED provides a direct way to investigate the AGN structure, our goal is to understand if quasars at the bright end of the luminosity function have peculiar properties compared to the bulk of the population. We built a mean intrinsic SED after correcting for the dust extinction, absorption and emission lines and intergalactic medium absorption. We also derived bolometric, IR band and monochromatic luminosities together with bolometric corrections at lambda = 5100 A and 3 micron. We define a new relation for the 3 micron bolometric correction. We find that the mean SED of hyper-luminous WISSH QSOs is different from that of less luminous sources, i.e. a relatively lower X-ray emission and a near and mid IR excess which can be explained assuming a larger dust contribution. WISSH QSOs have stronger emission from both warm and very hot dust, the latter being responsible for shifting the typical dip of the AGN SED from 1.3 to 1.1 micron. We also derived the mean SEDs of two sub-samples created according to the presence of Broad Absorption Lines and equivalent width of CIV line. We confirm that BALs are X-ray weak and that they have a reddened UV-optical continuum. We also find that BALs tend to have stronger emission from the hot dust component. This analysis suggests that hyper-luminous QSOs have a peculiar SED compared to less luminous objects. We present a new X-ray spectroscopic study of $22$ luminous ($2\times10^{45}\lesssim L_{\rm bol}\rm /erg\,s^{-1} \lesssim 2\times10^{46}$) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at intermediate-redshift ($0.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.4$), as part of the SUpermassive Black hole Winds in the x-rAYS (SUBWAYS) sample, mostly composed of quasars (QSOs) and type\,1 AGN. Here, 17 targets were observed with \textit{XMM-Newton} between 2019--2020 and the remaining 5 are from previous observations. The aim of this large campaign ($1.45\,\rm Ms$ duration) is to characterise the various manifestations of winds in the X-rays driven from supermassive black holes in AGN. In this paper we focus on the search and characterization of ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), which are typically detected through blueshifted absorption troughs in the Fe\,K band ($E>7\,\rm keV$). By following Monte Carlo procedures, we confirm the detection of absorption lines corresponding to highly ionised iron (e.g., Fe\,\textsc{xxv}\,H$\alpha$, Fe\,\textsc{xxvi}\,Ly$\alpha$) in 7/22 sources at the $\gtrsim95\%$ confidence level (for each individual line). The global combined probability of such absorption features in the sample is $>99.9\%$. The SUBWAYS campaign extends at higher luminosity and redshifts than previous local studies on Seyferts, obtained using \xmm and \suzaku observations. We find a UFO detection fraction of $\sim30\%$ on the total sample that is in agreement with the previous findings. This work independently provides further support for the existence of highly-ionised matter propagating at mildly relativistic speed ($\gtrsim0.1c$) in a considerable fraction of AGN over a broad range of luminosities, which is expected to play a key role in the self-regulated AGN feeding-feedback cycle, as also supported by hydrodynamical multiphase simulations., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a UV spectroscopic study of ionized outflows in 21 active galactic nuclei (AGN), observed with the HST. The targets of the SUBWAYS sample were selected with the aim to probe the parameter space of the underexplored AGN between the local Seyfert galaxies and the luminous quasars at high redshifts. Our targets, spanning redshifts of 0.1-0.4 and bolometric luminosities (L_bol) of 10^45-10^46 erg/s, have been observed with a large multi-wavelength campaign. Here, we model the UV spectra and look for different types of AGN outflows. We find that 60% of our targets show a presence of outflowing H I absorption, while 40% exhibit ionized outflows seen as absorption by either C IV, N V, or O VI. This is comparable to the occurrence of ionized outflows seen in the local Seyfert galaxies. All UV absorption lines in the sample are relatively narrow, with outflow velocities reaching up to -3300 km/s. We did not detect any UV counterparts to the X-ray ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), most likely due to their being too highly ionized. However, all SUBWAYS targets with an X-ray UFO demonstrate the presence of UV outflows at lower velocities. We find significant correlations between the column density (N) of the UV ions and L_bol of the AGN, with N of H I decreasing with L_bol, while N of O VI is increasing with L_bol. This is likely to be a photoionization effect, where toward higher AGN luminosities, the wind becomes more ionized, resulting in less absorption by neutral or low-ionization ions and more absorption by high-ionization ions. In addition, we find that N of the UV ions decreases as their outflow velocity increases. This may be explained by a mechanical power that is evacuating the UV-absorbing medium. The AGN bolometric correction is a key element to understand BH demographics and compute accurate BH accretion histories from AGN luminosities. However, current estimates still differ from each other by up to a factor of two to three, and rely on extrapolations at the lowest and highest luminosities. Here we revisit this fundamental issue presenting general hard X-ray ($K_{X}$) and optical ($K_{O}$) bolometric corrections, computed combining several AGN samples spanning the widest (about 7 dex) luminosity range ever used for this kind of studies. We analysed a total of $\sim 1000$ type 1 and type 2 AGN for which a dedicated SED-fitting has been carried out. We provide a bolometric correction separately for type 1 and type 2 AGN; the two bolometric corrections results to be in agreement in the overlapping luminosity range and therefore, for the first time, a universal bolometric correction for the whole AGN sample (both type 1 and type 2) has been computed. We found that $K_{X}$ is fairly constant at $log(L_{BOL}/L_{\odot}) < 11$, while it increases up to about one order of magnitude at $log(L_{BOL}/L_{\odot}) \sim 14.5$. A similar increasing trend has been observed when its dependence on either the Eddington ratio or the BH mass is considered, while no dependence on redshift up to $z\sim3.5$ has been found. On the contrary, the optical bolometric correction appears to be fairly constant (i.e. $K_{O} \sim 5$) whatever is the independent variable. We also verified that our bolometric corrections correctly predict the AGN bolometric luminosity functions. The fourth Fermi Large Area Telescope Source Catalog (4FGL) lists over 5000 gamma-ray sources with statistical significance above 4$\sigma$. About 23% of the sources listed in this catalog are unidentified/unassociated gamma-ray sources while ~26% of the sources are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs), lacking optical spectroscopic information. To probe the blazar nature of candidate counterparts of UGSs and BCUs, we started our optical spectroscopic follow up campaign in 2012, which up to date account for more than 350 observed sources. In this paper, the tenth of our campaign, we report on the spectroscopic observations of 37 sources, mostly BCUs, whose observations were carried out predominantly at the Observatorio Astron\'omico Nacional San Pedro M\'artir and the Southern Astrophysical Research Observatory between August 2018 and September 2019. We confirm the BL Lac nature of 27 sources and the flat spectrum radio quasar nature of three sources. The remaining ones are classified as six BL Lacs galaxy-dominated and one normal galaxy. We were also able to measure the redshifts for 20 sources, including 10 BL Lacs. A significant fraction of all $\gamma$-ray sources detected by the Large Area Telescope aboard the \fer\ satellite is still lacking a low-energy counterpart. In addition, there is still a large population of $\gamma$-ray sources with associated low-energy counterparts that lack firm classifications. In the last 10 years we have undertaken an optical spectroscopic campaign to address the problem of unassociated/unidentified $\gamma$-ray sources (UGSs), mainly devoted to observing blazars and blazar candidates because they are the largest population of $\gamma$-ray sources associated to date. Here we describe the overall impact of our optical spectroscopic campaign on sources associated in \fer-LAT catalogs, coupled with objects found in the literature. In the literature search, we kept track of efforts by different teams that presented optical spectra of counterparts or potential counterparts of \fer-LAT catalog sources. Our summary includes an analysis of an additional 30 newly-collected optical spectra of counterparts or potential counterparts of \fer-LAT sources of previously unknown nature.New spectra were acquired at the Blanco 4-m and OAN-SPM 2.1-m telescopes, and those available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (data release 15) archive. All new sources with optical spectra analyzed here are classified as blazars. Thanks to our campaign, we altogether discovered and classified 394 targets with an additional 123 objects collected from a literature search. We began our optical spectroscopic campaign between the release of the second and third \fer-LAT source catalogs (2FGL and 3FGL, respectively), and classified about 25\% of the sources with uncertain nature and discovered a blazar-like potential counterpart for $\sim$10\% of UGSs listed therein. In the 4FGL catalog, about 350 \fer-LAT sources are classified to date thanks to our campaign. Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) represent the majority of the AGN population. However, due to the difficulties in measuring their black hole (BH) masses, it is still unknown whether they follow the same BH mass–host galaxy scaling relations valid for quiescent galaxies and type 1 AGNs. Here, we present the locus of type 2 AGNs having virial BH mass estimates in the MBH-σ⋆ plane. Our analysis shows that the BH masses of type 2 AGNs are ∼0.9 dex smaller than type 1 AGNs at σ⋆ ∼ 185 km s‾¹, regardless of the (early/late) AGN host galaxy morphology. Equivalently, type 2 AGN host galaxies have stellar velocity dispersions ∼0.2 dex higher than type 1 AGN hosts at MBH ∼ 10⁷M⊙., Part of this work was supported by PRIN/MIUR 2010NHBSBE and PRIN/INAF 2014_3. The XXL survey currently covers two 25 sq. deg. patches with XMM observations of ~10ks. We summarise the scientific results associated with the first release of the XXL data set, that occurred mid 2016. We review several arguments for increasing the survey depth to 40 ks during the next decade of XMM operations. X-ray (z 1 cluster density. It will eventually constitute a reference study and an ideal calibration field for the upcoming eROSITA and Euclid missions.

Nearly one-third of the sources in the $Fermi$-LAT catalogs lack a lower energy counterpart, hence being referred as unidentified/unassociated gamma-ray sources (UGSs). In order to firmly classify them, dedicated multifrequency follow-up campaigns are necessary. These will permit to unveil their nature and identify the fraction that could belong to the class of active galaxies known as blazars that is the largest population of extragalactic $\gamma$-ray sources. In $Fermi$-LAT catalogs there are also gamma-ray sources associated with multifrequency blazar-like objects known as Blazars Candidates of Uncertain type (i.e., BCUs) for which follow up spectroscopic campaigns are mandatory to confirm their blazar nature. Thus, in 2013 we started an optical spectroscopic campaign to identify blazar-like objects potential counterparts of UGSs and BCUs. Here we report the spectra of 31 additional targets observed as part of our follow up campaign. Thirteen of them are BCUs for which we acquired spectroscopic observations at Observatorio Astrof\'isico Guillermo Haro (OAGH) and at Southern Astrophysical Research Observatory (SOAR) telescopes, while the rest has been identified thanks to the archival observations available from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We confirm the blazar nature of all BCUs: three of them are in blazar of quasar type (BZQs) while the remaining ones can be spectroscopically classified as BL Lac objects (BZBs). Then we also discovered 18 BL Lac objects lying within the positional uncertainty regions of UGSs that could be their potential counterparts., Comment: 30 pages and 65 figures

We present medium resolution near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 41 obscured and intermediate class active galactic nuclei (AGN; type 2, 1.9 and 1.8; AGN2) with redshift z ≲ 0.1, selected from the $\textit{Swift}$/Burst Alert Telescope 70-month catalogue. The observations have been carried out in the framework of a systematic study of the AGN2 near-infrared spectral properties and have been executed using Infrared Spectrometer And Array Camera/VLT, X-shooter/VLT and LUCI/LBT, reaching an average S/N ratio of ∼30 per resolution element. For those objects observed with X-shooter, we also obtained simultaneous optical and UV spectroscopy. We have identified a component from the broad line region in 13 out of 41 AGN2, with full width at half-maximum (FWHM) > 800 km s$^{-1}$. We have verified that the detection of the broad line region components does not significantly depend on selection effects due to the quality of the spectra, the X-ray or near-infrared fluxes, the orientation angle of the host galaxy or the hydrogen column density measured in the X-ray band. We imaged, with ALMA and ARGOS/LUCI, the molecular gas and dust and stellar continuum in XID2028, which is an obscured quasi-stellar object (QSO) at z = 1.593, where the presence of a massive outflow in the ionised gas component traced by the [OIII]5007 emission has been resolved up to 10 kpc. This target represents a unique test case to study QSO feedback in action at the peak epoch of AGN-galaxy co-evolution. The QSO was detected in the CO(5 − 4) transition and in the 1.3 mm continuum at ~30 and ~20σ significance, respectively; both emissions are confined in the central (, Includes STFC and ERC grants.

Studying the coupling between the energy output produced by the central quasar and the host galaxy is fundamental to fully understand galaxy evolution. Quasar feedback is indeed supposed to dramatically affect the galaxy properties by depositing large amounts of energy and momentum into the ISM. In order to gain further insights on this process, we study the SEDs of sources at the brightest end of the quasar luminosity function, for which the feedback mechanism is supposed to be at its maximum. We model the rest-frame UV-to-FIR SEDs of 16 WISE-SDSS Selected Hyper-luminous (WISSH) quasars at 1.8 < z < 4.6 disentangling the different emission components and deriving physical parameters of both the nuclear component and the host galaxy. We also use a radiative transfer code to account for the contribution of the quasar-related emission to the FIR fluxes. Most SEDs are well described by a standard combination of accretion disk+torus and cold dust emission. However, about 30% of them require an additional emission component in the NIR, with temperatures peaking at 750K, which indicates the presence of a hotter dust component in these powerful quasars. We measure extreme values of both AGN bolometric luminosity (LBOL > 10^47 erg/s) and SFR (up to 2000 Msun/yr). A new relation between quasar and star-formation luminosity is derived (LSF propto LQSO^(0.73)) by combining several Herschel-detected quasar samples from z=0 to 4. Future observations will be crucial to measure the molecular gas content in these systems, probe the impact between quasar-driven outflows and on-going star-formation, and reveal the presence of merger signatures in their host galaxies., 19 pages, 12 figures; Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics on June 13, 2017

We discuss the broad-band X-ray spectrum of GRS 1734−292 obtained from non-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array) observations, performed in 2009 and 2014, respectively. GRS1734−292 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy, located near the Galactic plane at z = 0.0214. The NuSTAR spectrum (3–80 keV) is dominated by a primary power-law continuum with Γ = 1.65 ± 0.05 and a high-energy cut-off Ec = 53(+11)(−8) keV, one of the lowest measured by NuSTAR in a Seyfert galaxy. Comptonization models show a temperature of the coronal plasma of kTe = 11.9 (+1.2)(−0.9) keV and an optical depth, assuming a slab geometry, τ=2.98(+0.16)(−0.19) or a similar temperature and τ=6.7(+0.3)(−0.4) assuming a spherical geometry. The 2009 XMM–Newton spectrum is well described by a flatter intrinsic continuum (Γ=1.47(+0.07)(−0.03)) and one absorption line due to Fe XXV Kα produced by a warm absorber. We present dust yields for asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and super-asymptotic giant branch (SAGB) stars of solar metallicity. Stars with initial mass 1.5 M☉ ≤ Mini ≤ 3 M☉ reach the carbon star stage during the AGB phase and produce mainly solid carbon and SiC. The size and the amount of the carbon particles formed follows a positive trend with the mass of the star; the carbon grains with the largest size (aC ∼ 0.2 μm) are produced by AGB stars with Mini = 2.5-3 M☉, as these stars are those achieving the greatest enrichment of carbon in the surface regions. The size of SiC grains, being sensitive to the surface silicon abundance, remains at about aSiC ∼ 0.1μm. The mass of carbonaceous dust formed is in the range 10-4-5 × 10-3 M☉, whereas the mass of SiC produced is 2 × 10-4-10-3 M☉. Massive AGB/SAGB stars with Mini > 3 M☉ experience hot bottom burning, which inhibits the formation of carbon stars. The most relevant dust species formed in these stars are silicate and alumina dust, with grain sizes in the range 0.1 < aol < 0.15 μm and a_Al_2O_3 ∼ 0.07 μm, respectively. The mass of silicates produced spans the interval 3.4 × 10-3 M☉ ≤ Mdust ≤ 1.1 × 10-2 M☉ and increases with the initial mass of the star.

Variability in the X-rays is a key ingredient in understanding and unveiling active galactic nuclei (AGN) properties. In this band flux variations occur on short time scales (hours) as well as on larger times scales. While short time scale variability is often investigated in single source studies, only few works are able to explore flux variation on very long time scales.This work provides a statistical analysis of the AGN long term X-ray variability. We study variability on the largest time interval ever investigated for the 0.2-2 keV band, up to $\sim 20$ years rest-frame for a sample of 220 sources. Moreover, we study variability for 2,700 quasars up to $\sim 8$ years rest-frame in the same (soft) band.We build our source sample using the 3XMM serendipitous source catalogue data release 5, and data from ROSAT All Sky Survey Bright and Faint source catalogues. In order to select only AGN we use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalogues data releases 7 and 12. Combining ROSAT and XMM-Newton observations, we investigate variability using the structure function analysis which describes the amount of variability as a function of the lag between the observations.Our work shows an increase of the structure function up to 20 years. We do not find evidence of a plateau in the structure function on these long time scales.The increase of the structure function at long time lags suggests that variability in the soft X-rays can be influenced by flux variations originated in the accretion disk or that they take place in a region large enough to justify variation on such long time scales., 7 pages, 7 figures, to appear on A&A, minor corrections for affiliations and language

We report the virial measurements of the BH mass of a sample of 17 type 2 AGN, drawn from the Swift/BAT 70-month 14-195 keV hard X-ray catalogue, where a faint BLR component has been measured via deep NIR (0.8-2.5 $\mu$m) spectroscopy. We compared the type 2 AGN with a control sample of 33 type 1 AGN. We find that the type 2 AGN BH masses span the 5$, Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Accurately weigh the masses of SMBH in AGN is currently possible for only a small group of local and bright broad-line AGN through reverberation mapping (RM). Statistical demographic studies can be carried out considering the empirical scaling relation between the size of the BLR and the AGN optical continuum luminosity. However, there are still biases against low-luminosity or reddened AGN, in which the rest-frame optical radiation can be severely absorbed/diluted by the host and the BLR emission lines could be hard to detect. Our purpose is to widen the applicability of virial-based SE relations to reliably measure the BH masses also for low-luminosity or intermediate/type 2 AGN that are missed by current methodology. We achieve this goal by calibrating virial relations based on unbiased quantities: the hard X-ray luminosities, in the 2-10 keV and 14-195 keV bands, that are less sensitive to galaxy contamination, and the FWHM of the most important rest-frame NIR and optical BLR emission lines. We built a sample of RM AGN having both X-ray luminosity and broad optical/NIR FWHM measurements available in order to calibrate new virial BH mass estimators. We found that the FWHM of the H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and NIR lines (i.e. Pa$\alpha$, Pa$\beta$ and HeI$\lambda$10830) all correlate each other having negligible or small offsets. This result allowed us to derive virial BH mass estimators based on either the 2-10 keV or 14-195 keV luminosity. We took also into account the recent determination of the different virial coefficients $f$ for pseudo and classical bulges. By splitting the sample according to the bulge type and adopting separate $f$ factors we found that our virial relations predict BH masses of AGN hosted in pseudobulges $\sim$0.5 dex smaller than in classical bulges. Assuming the same average $f$ factor for both populations, a difference of $\sim$0.2 dex is still found., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication on A&A

Models and observations suggest that both power and effects of AGN feedback should be maximised in hyper-luminous (L_Bol>10^47 erg/s) quasars, i.e. objects at the brightest end of the AGN luminosity function. We present the first results of a multi-wavelength observing program, focusing on a sample of WISE/SDSS selected hyper-luminous (WISSH) broad-line quasars at z~1.5-5. The WISSH quasars project has been designed to reveal the most energetic AGN-driven outflows, estimate their occurrence at the peak of quasar activity and extend the study of correlations between outflows and nuclear properties up to poorly-investigated extreme AGN luminosities (L_Bol~10^47 -10^48 erg/s). We present NIR, long-slit LBT/LUCI1 spectroscopy of five WISSH quasars at z~2.3-3.5 showing prominent [OIII] emission lines with broad (FWHM~1200-2200 km/s) and skewed profiles. The luminosities of the broad [OIII] wings are the highest measured so far (L_[OIII]^broad >~5x10^44 erg/s) and reveal the presence of powerful ionised outflows with mass outflow rates Mdot >~1700 M_Sun/yr and kinetic powers Edot >~10^45 erg/s. Although these estimates are affected by large uncertainties, due to the use of [OIII] as tracer of ionized outflows and the very basic outflow model we assume, these results suggest that the AGN is highly efficient in pushing outwards large amounts of ionised gas in our targets. The mechanical outflow luminosities for WISSH quasars correspond to higher fractions (~1-3%) of L_Bol than those derived for lower L_Bol AGN. Our targets host very massive (M_BH>~2x10^9 M_Sun) black holes which are still accreting at a high rate (i.e. a factor of ~0.4-3 of the Eddington limit). These findings demonstrate that WISSH quasars offer the opportunity of probing the extreme end of both luminosity and SMBH mass functions and revealing powerful ionised outflows able to affect the evolution of their host galaxies., 18 pages, 11 figures, A&A accepted

We present near-infrared spectra, obtained with SINFONI and XShooter observations at ESO VLT, of nine dusty, red QSOs at 1.2 10^{21} - 10^{22} cm^{-2}) and show a broad Ha component in the NIR spectra. We complement this sample with twelve additional sources taken from the literature with similar properties resulting in a total sample of 21 X-ray obscured, intermediate type (1.8-1.9), dusty reddened QSOs. From the broad Ha line we have computed the BH masses through the virial formula and derived Eddington ratios. Moreover, from optical/IR multi-component SED fitting we have derived the stellar mass of their host galaxies and their SFRs. We find that most of the sources in our sample are hosted in starburst and main sequence star-forming galaxies with Eddington ratios lambda>0.1. We find a strong trend with the BH mass i.e. less massive objects are scattered below and above the local relation while the most massive ones are mainly located above it. We also studied the evolution of these sources on the M_BH-M_star plane compared to a sample of optically blue type--1 QSOs and we find that obscured red QSOs show a ratio of M_BH to M_star that increases with redshift which is consistent with or slightly lower than what has been found for blue QSOs. These sources may represent the blow-out phase at the end of the rapid BH growth and immediately preceding the classical blue QSOs typically sampled in optical surveys. They in fact show evidence of outflows in the ionized gas component, but their BH has already fully formed.

We have surveyed with XMM-Newton the central ~0.6 deg2 region of the ELAIS-S1 field down to flux limits of ~5.5X10-16 cgs (0.5-2 keV, S band), ~2X10-15 cgs (2-10 keV, H band), and ~4X10-15 cgs (5-10 keV, HH band). We detect a total of 478 sources, 395 and 205 of which detected in the S and H bands respectively. We identified 7 clearly extended sources and estimated their redshift through X-ray spectral fits with thermal models. In four cases the redshift is consistent with z=0.4. We have computed the angular correlation function of the sources in the S and H bands, finding best fit correlation angles theta_0=5.2+/-3.8 arcsec and theta_0=12.8+/-7.8 arcsec respectively. A rough estimate of the present-day correlation length r_0 can be obtained inverting the Limber equation and assuming an appropriate redshift distribution dN/dz. The results range between 12.8 and 9.8 h-1 Mpc in the S band and between 17.9 and 13.4 h-1 Mpc in the H band, with 30-40% statistical errors, assuming either smooth redshift distributions or redshift distributions with spikes accounting for the presence of a structure at z=0.4. The relative density of the S band sources is higher near the clusters and groups at z~0.4 and extends toward East and toward South/West. This suggests that the structure is complex, with a size comparable to the full XMM-Newton field. We have studied the dependence of the AGN nuclear radio (1.4 GHz) luminosity on both the AGN 2-10 keV X-ray and the host-galaxy K-band luminosity. A complete sample of 1268 X-ray selected AGN (both type 1 and type 2) has been used, which is the largest catalogue of AGN belonging to statistically well defined samples where radio, X and K band information exists. At variance with previous studies, radio upper limits have been statistically taken into account using a Bayesian Maximum Likelihood fitting method. It resulted that a good fit is obtained assuming a plane in the 3D LRLX-LK space, namely logLR= XlogLX+ KlogLK + 0, having a 1 dex wide (1 ) spread in radio luminosity. As already shown by La Franca, Melini & Fiore (2010), no evidence of bimodality in the radio luminosity distribution was found and therefore any definition of radio loudness in AGN is arbitrary. Using scaling relations between the BH mass and the host galaxy K-band luminosity, we have also derived a new estimate of the BH fundamental plane (in the L5GHz-LX-MBH space). Our analysis shows that previous measures of the BH fundamental plane are biased by 0.8 dex in favor of the most luminous radio sources. Therefore, many AGN studies, where the BH fundamental plane is used to investigate how AGN regulate their radiative and mechanical luminosity as a function of the accretion rate, or many AGN/galaxy co-evolution models, where radio-feedback is computed using the AGN fundamental plane, should revise their conclusions.

Despite the fact that blazars constitute the rarest class among active galactic nuclei (AGNs) they are the largest known population of associated $\gamma$-ray sources. Many of the $\gamma$-ray objects listed in the Fermi-Large Area Telescope Third Source catalog (3FGL) are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs), either because they show multifrequency behaviour similar to blazars but lacking optical spectra in the literature, or because the quality of such spectra is too low to confirm their nature. Here we select, out of 585 BCUs in the 3FGL, 42 BCUs which we identify as probable blazars by their WISE infrared colors and which also have optical spectra that are available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and/or Six-Degree Field Galaxy Survey Database (6dFGS). We confirm the blazar nature of all of the sources. We furthermore conclude that 28 of them are BL Lacs, 8 are radio-loud quasars with flat radio spectrum and 6 are BL Lac whose emission is dominated by their host galaxy.

We present BeppoSAX observations of the southern S1 region in the European Large-Area Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Survey (ELAIS). These observations cover an area of similar to1.7 deg(2) and reach an on-axis (similar to0.7 deg(2)) 2-10 keV (hard X-ray, or HX) sensitivity of similar to 10(-13) ergs s(-1) cm(-2). This is the first HX analysis of an ISOCAM survey. We detect nine sources with a signal-to-noise ratio SNRHX > 3, four additional sources with a 1.3-10 keV (total X-ray, or T) SNRT > 3, and two additional sources that seem to be associated with QSOs having SNRT > 2.9. The number densities of the SNRHX > 3 sources are consistent with the ASCA and BeppoSAX log N-log S functions. Six BeppoSAX sources have reliable ISOCAM 15 mum counterparts within similar to 60". All these ISOCAM sources have optical counterparts of R < 20 mag. Five of these sources have been previously optically classified, four as QSOs and one as a broad absorption line (BAL) QSO at z = 2.2. The remaining unclassified source has X-ray and photometric properties consistent with those of a nearby Seyfert galaxy. One further HX source has a 2.6 ISOCAM counterpart associated with a galaxy at z = 0.325. If this ISOCAM source is real, the HX/MIR properties suggest either an unusual QSO or a cD cluster galaxy. We have constructed MIR and HX spectral energy distributions to compute the expected HX/MIR ratios for these classes of objects up to z = 3.2 and assess the HX/MIR survey depth. The BAL QSO has an observed X-ray softness ratio and HX/MIR flux ratio similar to those of QSOs but different from those found for low-redshift BAL QSOs. This difference can be explained in terms of absorption, and it suggests that high-redshift BAL QSOs should be comparatively easy to detect in the HX band, allowing their true fraction in the high-redshift QSO population to be determined. In order to investigate the role of absorption in AGN with jets, we have studied the column density distribution of a hard X-ray selected sample of radio galaxies, derived from the INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT AGN catalogues (~7-10% of the total AGN population). The 64 radio galaxies have a typical FRII radio morphology and are characterized by high 20-100 keV luminosities (from 10^42 to 10^46 erg/s) and high Eddington ratios (Log L_{Bol}/L_{Edd} typically larger than ~0.01). The observed fraction of absorbed AGN (N_{H} > 10^{22} cm^{-2}) is around 40% among the total sample, and ~75% among type 2 AGN. The majority of obscured AGN are narrow line objects, while unobscured AGN are broad line objects, obeying to the zeroth-order predictions of unified models. A significant anti-correlation between the radio core dominance parameter and the X-ray column density is found. The observed fraction of Compton thick AGN is ~2-3%, in comparison with the 5-7% found in radio-quiet hard X-ray selected AGN. We have estimated the absorption and Compton thick fractions in a hard X-ray sample containing both radio galaxies and non-radio galaxies and therefore affected by the same selection biases. No statistical significant difference was found in the absorption properties of radio galaxies and non radio galaxies sample. In particular, the Compton thick objects are likely missing in both samples and the fraction of obscured radio galaxies appears to decrease with luminosity as observed in hard X-ray non-radio galaxies., 15 pages, 10 figures. Negative feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is considered a key mechanism in shaping galaxy evolution. Fast, extended outflows are frequently detected in the AGN host galaxies at all redshifts and luminosities, both in ionised and molecular gas. However, these outflows are only "potentially" able to quench star formation and we are still missing a decisive evidence of negative feedback in action. Here we present Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared (SINFONI) H- and K-band integral-field spectroscopic observations of two quasars at $z\sim$2.4 characterised by fast, extended outflows detected through the [OIII]$\lambda$5007 line (Carniani et al. 2015). The high signal-to-noise ratio of our observations allows us to identify faint narrow (FWHM $< 500$ km/s), and spatially extended components in [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and H$\alpha$ emission associated with star formation in the host galaxy. Such star-formation powered emission is spatially anti-correlated with the fast outflows. The ionised outflows therefore appear to be able to suppress star formation in the region where the outflow is expanding. However the detection of narrow, spatially-extended H$\alpha$ emission indicates star formation rates of at least $\sim 50-90$ M$_{\odot}$/yr, suggesting either that AGN feedback does not affect the whole galaxy or that many feedback episodes are required before star formation is completely quenched. On the other hand, the narrow H$\alpha$ emission extending along the edges of the outflow cone may lead also to a positive feedback interpretation. We investigate the role of supermassive black holes in the global context of galaxy evolution by measuring the host galaxy stellar mass function (HGMF) and the specific accretion rate i.e., lambda_SAR, distribution function (SARDF) up to z~2.5 with ~1000 X-ray selected AGN from XMM-COSMOS. Using a maximum likelihood approach, we jointly fit the stellar mass function and specific accretion rate distribution function, with the X-ray luminosity function as an additional constraint. Our best fit model characterizes the SARDF as a double power-law with mass dependent but redshift independent break whose low lambda_SAR slope flattens with increasing redshift while the normalization increases. This implies that, for a given stellar mass, higher lambda_SAR objects have a peak in their space density at earlier epoch compared to the lower lambda_SAR ones, following and mimicking the well known AGN cosmic downsizing as observed in the AGN luminosity function. The mass function of active galaxies is described by a Schechter function with a almost constant Mstar* and a low mass slope alpha that flattens with redshift. Compared to the stellar mass function, we find that the HGMF has a similar shape and that, up to log((Mstar/Msun)~11.5 the ratio of AGN host galaxies to star forming galaxies is basically constant (~10%). Finally, the comparison of the AGN HGMF for different luminosity and specific accretion rate sub-classes with the phenomenological model prediction by Peng et al. (2010) for the "transient" population, i.e. galaxies in the process of being mass-quenched, reveals that low-luminosity AGN do not appear to be able to contribute significantly to the quenching and that at least at high masses, i.e. Mstar>10^(10.7) Msun , feedback from luminous AGN (log(Lbol)>~46 [erg/s]) may be responsible for the quenching of star formation in the host galaxy., 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The extragalactic $\gamma$-ray sky is dominated by emission from blazars, a peculiar class of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Many of the $\gamma$-ray sources included in Fermi -Large Area Telescope Third Source catalog (3FGL) are classified as a blazar candidate of uncertain type (BCU) because there is no optical spectra available in the literature to confirm their nature. In 2013 we started a spectroscopic campaign to look for the optical counterparts of the BCUs and of the Unidentified $\gamma$-ray Sources. The main goal of our investigation is to confirm the blazar nature of these sources having peculiar properties as compact radio emission and/or selected on the basis of their infrared (IR) colors. Whenever possible we also determine their redshifts. Here we present the results of the observations carried out in the Northern hemisphere in 2013 and 2014 at Telescopio Nazionale Galilleo (TNG), Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) and Observatorio Astron\'omico Nacional (OAN) in San Pedro M\'artir. In this paper we describe the optical spectra of 25 sources. We confirmed that all the 15 BCUs observed in our campaign and included in our sample are blazars and we estimated the redshift for 3 of them. In addition, we present the spectra for 3 sources classified as BL Lacs in the literature but with no optical spectra available to date. We found that one of them is a quasar (QSO) at a redshift $z$ = 0.208 and the other 2 are BL Lacs. Moreover, we also present 7 new spectra for known blazars listed in the Roma-BZCAT having an uncertain redshift or being classified as BL Lac candidates. We found that one of them, 5BZB J0724+2621 is a `changing look' blazar. Indexación: Web of Science Blazars, one of the most extreme classes of active galaxies, constitute so far the largest known population of.-ray sources, and their number is continuously growing in the Fermi catalogs. However, in the latest release of the Fermi catalog there is still a large fraction of sources that are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs) for which optical spectroscopic observations are necessary to confirm their nature and their associations. In addition, about one-third of the gamma-ray point sources listed in the Third Fermi-LAT Source Catalog (3FGL) are still unassociated and lacking an assigned lower-energy counterpart. Since 2012 we have been carrying out an optical spectroscopic campaign to observe blazar candidates to confirm their nature. In this paper, the sixth of the series, we present optical spectroscopic observations for 30 gamma-ray blazar candidates from different observing programs we carried out with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, William Herschel Telescope, Observatorio Astronomico Nacional, Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, and Magellan. We found that 21 out of 30 sources investigated are BL Lac objects, while the remaining targets are classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars showing the typical broad emission lines of normal quasi-stellar objects. We studied the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) radio emission from a compilation of hard X-ray selected samples, all observed in the 1.4 GHz band. A total of more than 1600 AGN with 2-10 keV de-absorbed luminosities higher than 10^42 erg/s were used. For a sub-sample of about 50 z\lsim 0.1 AGN it was possible to reach a ~80% fraction of radio detections and therefore, for the first time, it was possible to almost completely measure the probability distribution function of the ratio between the radio and the X-ray luminosity Rx=log[L(1.4)/Lx]. The probability distribution function of Rx was functionally fitted as dependent on the X-ray luminosity and redshift, P(Rx|Lx,z). We present results on low-resolution mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of 70 infrared-luminous galaxies obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard Spitzer. We selected sources from the European Large Area Infrared Survey (ELAIS) with S15 > 0.8 mJy and photometric or spectroscopic z > 1. About half of the sample are QSOs in the optical, while the remaining sources are galaxies, comprising both obscured AGN and starbursts. We classify the spectra using well-known infrared diagnostics, as well as a new one that we propose, into three types of source: those dominated by an unobscured AGN (QSOs), obscured AGN, and starburst-dominated sources. Starbursts concentrate at z ~ 0.6-1.0 favored by the shift of the 7.7-micron PAH band into the selection 15 micron band, while AGN spread over the 0.5 < z < 3.1 range. Star formation rates (SFR) are estimated for individual sources from the luminosity of the PAH features. An estimate of the average PAH luminosity in QSOs and obscured AGN is obtained from the composite spectrum of all sources with reliable redshifts. The estimated mean SFR in the QSOs is 50-100 Mo yr^-1, but the implied FIR luminosity is 3-10 times lower than that obtained from stacking analysis of the FIR photometry, suggesting destruction of the PAH carriers by energetic photons from the AGN. The SFR estimated in obscured AGN is 2-3 times higher than in QSOs of similar MIR luminosity. This discrepancy might not be due to luminosity effects or selection bias alone, but could instead indicate a connection between obscuration and star formation. However, the observed correlation between silicate absorption and the slope of the near- to mid-infrared spectrum is compatible with the obscuration of the AGN emission in these sources being produced in a dust torus., 32 pages, 24 figures, 15 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Aims: We aim at estimating the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and the physical parameters related to the black holes harbored in eight high X-ray-to-optical (F_X/F_R>10) obscured quasars at z>0.9 selected in the 2--10 keV band from the HELLAS2XMM survey. Methods: We use IRAC and MIPS 24 micron observations, along with optical and Ks-band photometry, to obtain the SEDs of the sources. The observed SEDs are modeled using a combination of an elliptical template and torus emission (using the phenomenological templates of Silva et al. 2004) for six sources associated with passive galaxies; for two point-like sources, the empirical SEDs of red quasars are adopted. The bolometric luminosities and the M_BH-L_K relation are used to provide an estimate of the masses and Eddington ratios of the black holes residing in these AGN. Results: All of our sources are detected in the IRAC and MIPS (at 24 micron) bands. The SED modeling described above is in good agreement with the observed near- and mid-infrared data. The derived bolometric luminosities are in the range ~10^45-10^47 erg s^-1, and the median 2--10 keV bolometric correction is ~25, consistent with the widely adopted value derived by Elvis et al. (1994). For the objects with elliptical-like profiles in the K_s band, we derive high stellar masses (0.8-6.2)X10^11 Mo, black hole masses in the range (0.2-2.5)X10^9 Mo, and Eddington ratios L/L_Edd, 12 pages, 6 figures, A&A accepted. AGN-driven outflows are invoked by galaxy evolutionary models to quench star formation and to explain the origin of the relations observed locally between super massive black holes and their host galaxies. This work aims to detect the presence of extended ionised outflows in luminous quasars where we expect the maximum activity both in star formation and in black hole accretion. Currently, there are only a few studies based on spatially resolved observations of outflows at high redshift, $z>2$. We analyse a sample of six luminous (${\rm L>10^{47} \ erg/s}$) quasars at $z\sim2.4$, observed in H-band using the near-IR integral field spectrometer SINFONI at VLT. We perform a kinematic analysis of the [OIII] emission line at $\lambda = 5007\AA$. [OIII] has a complex gas kinematic, with blue-shifted velocities of a few hundreds of km/s and line widths up to 1500 km/s. Using the spectroastrometric method we infer size of the ionised outflows of up to $\sim$2 kpc. The properties of the ionised outflows, mass outflow rate, momentum rate and kinetic power, are correlated with the AGN luminosity. The increase in outflow rate with increasing AGN luminosity is consistent with the idea that a luminous AGN pushes away the surrounding gas through fast outflows driven by radiation pressure, which depends on the emitted luminosity. We derive mass outflow rates of about 6-700 M$_{\odot}$/yr for our sample, which are lower than those observed in molecular outflows. Indeed physical properties of ionised outflows show dependences on AGN luminosity which are similar to those of molecular outflows but indicating that the mass of ionised gas is smaller than that of the molecular one. In the last decade, using single epoch (SE) virial based spectroscopic optical observations, it has been possible to measure the black hole (BH) mass on large type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) samples. However this kind of measurements can not be applied on those obscured type 2 and/or low luminosity AGN where the nuclear component does not dominate in the optical. We have derived new SE relationships, based on the FWHM and luminosity of the broad line region component of the Pabeta emission line and/or the hard X-ray luminosity in the 14-195 keV band, which have the prospect of better working with low luminosity or obscured AGN. The SE relationships have been calibrated in the 10^5-10^9 M_sol mass range, using a sample of AGN whose BH masses have been previously measured using reverberation mapping techniques. Our tightest relationship between the reverberation-based BH mass and the SE virial product has an intrinsic spread of 0.20 dex. Thanks to these SE relations, in agreement with previous estimates, we have measured a BH mass of M_BH =1.7^+1.3_-0.7 X 10^5 M_sol for the low luminosity, type 1, AGN NGC 4395 (one of the smallest active galactic BH known). We also measured, for the first time, a BH mass of M_BH = 1.5^+1.1_-0.6 X 10^7 M_sol for the Seyfert 2 galaxy MCG -01-24-012., 10 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

We present the Final Analysis of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) 15 $\mu$m observations, carried out with the ISOCAM instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The data reduction method, known as LARI method, is based on a mathematical model of the detector's behaviour and was specifically designed for the detection of faint sources in ISO-CAM/PHOT data. The method is fully interactive and leads to very reliable and complete source lists. The resulting catalogue includes 1923 sources detected with $S/N > 5$ in the {0.5 -- 100 mJy} flux range and over an area of 10.85 {deg$^2$} split into four fields, making it the largest non-serendipitous extragalactic source catalogue obtained to date from ISO data. This paper presents the concepts underlying the data reduction method together with its latest enhancements. The data reduction process, the production and basic properties of the resulting catalogue are discussed. We present the 90 micron luminosity function of the Final Analysis of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS), extending the sample size of our previous analysis (paper IV) by about a factor of 4. Our sample extends to z=1.1, around 50 times the comoving volume of paper IV, and 10^{7.7} < h^{-2}L/Lsun < 10^{12.5}. From our optical spectroscopy campaigns of the northern ELAIS 90 mircon survey (7.4 deg^2 in total, to S(90um)>70mJy), we obtained redshifts for 61% of the sample (151 redshifts) to B, Comment: MNRAS accepted. 7 pages, 5 figures. We present the first determination of the 15 mum luminosity function of galaxies from the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) southern fields. We have adopted a new criterion to separate the quiescent, nonevolving and the starburst, evolving populations based on the ratio of mid-infrared to optical luminosity. Strong evolution is suggested by our data for the starburst galaxy population, while normal spiral galaxies are consistent with no evolution. The starburst population must evolve both in luminosity and in density with rates of the order L(z) proportional to (1 + z)(3.5) and rho(z) proportional to (1 + z)(3.8), respectively, up to z similar to 1. The evolutionary parameters of our model have been tested by comparing the model predictions with other observables, like source counts at all flux density levels (from 0.1 to 300 mJy) and redshift distributions and luminosity functions at high z (0.7 < z < 1.0 from Hubble Deep Field North [HDF-N] data). The agreement between our model predictions and the observed data is remarkably good. We use our data to estimate the star formation density of the universe up to z 0: 4, and we use the luminosity function model to predict the trend of the star formation history up to z = 1.

We present a catalog of optical spectroscopic identifications of sources detected by Spitzer at 3.6 or 24 micron down to 10 and 280 microJy, respectively, in the SWIRE/XMM-Newton/ELAIS-S1 field and classified via line width analysis and diagnostic diagrams. A total of 1376 sources down to R~24.2 mag have been identified (1362 detected at 3.6 micron, 419 at 24 micron, and 405 at both) by low-resolution optical spectroscopy carried out with FORS2, VIMOS, and EFOSC2 at the Very Large Telescope and 3.6m ESO telescopes. The spectroscopic campaigns have been carried out over the central 0.6 square degrees area of ELAIS-S1 which, in particular, has also been observed by XMM-Newton and Chandra. We present X-shooter at the Vewry Large Telescope observations of a sample of 10 luminous, X-ray obscured QSOs at z$\sim1.5$ from the XMM-COSMOS survey, expected to be caught in the transitioning phase from starburst to active galactic nucleus (AGN)-dominated systems. The main selection criterion is X-ray detection at bright fluxes (L$>=10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) coupled to red optical-to-NIR-to-MIR colors. Thanks to its large wavelength coverage, X-shooter allowed us to determine accurate redshifts from the presence of multiple emission lines for five out of six targets for which we had only a photometric redshift estimate, with an 80 percent success rate, significantly larger than what is observed in similar programs of spectroscopic follow-up of red QSOs. We report the detection of broad and shifted components in the [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$5007,4959 complexes for six out of eight sources with these lines observable in regions free from strong atmospheric absorptions. The full width half-maximum (FWHM) associated with the broad components are in the range FWHM$\sim900-1600$ km s$^{-1}$, larger than the average value observed in SDSS Type 2 AGN samples at similar observed [OIII] luminosity, but comparable to those observed for QSO/ultraluminous infrared galaxies systems for which the presence of kpc scale outflows have been revealed through integral field unit spectroscopy. Although the total outflow energetics (inferred under reasonable assumptions) may be consistent with winds accelerated by stellar processes, we favour an AGN origin for the outflows given the high outflow velocities oberved (v$>1000$ km s$^{-1}$) and the presence of strong winds also in objects undetected in the far infrared., Comment: Final version to appear in MNRAS (lower limits added in Figure 9 and additional 3 spectra added in the appendix; results unchanged)

The dust formation process in the winds of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars is discussed, based on full evolutionary models of stars with mass in the range $1$M$_odot leq$M$leq 8$M$_odot$, and metallicities $0.001 < Z

The BeppoSAX High Energy Large Area Survey (HELLAS) has surveyed about 85 deg^2 of sky in the 5-10 keV band down to a flux of 4-5 10^-14 erg cm-2 s-1. The source surface density of 16.9+-6.4 deg$^{-2}$ at the survey limit corresponds to a resolved fraction of the 5-10 keV X-ray background (XRB) of the order of 20-30 %. Hardness ratios analysis indicates that the spectra of a substantial fraction of the HELLAS sources (at least one third) are harder than a alpha_E = 0.6 power law. This hardness may be due to large absorbing columns. The hardness ratio analysis also indicates that many HELLAS sources may have a spectrum more complex than a single absorbed power law. A soft component, superimposed to a strongly cut-off power law, is likely to be present in several sources., to appear in MNRAS

The average optical-UV continuum shape of QSOs has been investigated using spectra of 62 QSOs having good relative photometric calibrations. The QSO spectra were extracted from two complete color selected samples in the magnitude intervals B ~ 16-20. The analysis was performed fitting power-law continua (f proportional to nu^(alpha)) in well defined rest-frame wavelength intervals after removing regions of the spectrum affected by strong emission lines or weak emission bumps. The average slope in the rest-frame optical-UV region 1200 - 5500 A shows a rapid change around the 3000 A emission bump with alpha=0.15 longward of it and alpha=-0.65 at shorter wavelengths. Although these average slopes have been obtained using spectra of QSOs with different luminosities and redshifts, there are no significant correlations of the average spectral index with these quantities. For a few QSOs in the sample we were able to measure the same softening of the spectral shape within the individual spectrum. These results have significant consequences on the estimate of the cosmological evolution of the optically selected QSOs as they affect, for instance, the k-corrections. New k-corrections in the B, V, R and Gr bands were computed. The derived average spectral shape in the optical-UV band puts interesting constraints on the expected emission mechanisms.

We present new models for the evolution of stars with mass in the range 1Msun < M < 7.5Msun, followed from the pre-main-sequence through the asymptotic giant branch phase. The metallicity adopted is $Z=3*10^{-4} (which, with an alpha-enhancement of +0.4, corresponds to [Fe/H]=-2). Dust formation is described by following the growth of dust grains of various types as the wind expands from the stellar surface. Models with mass M>3Msun experience Hot Bottom Burning, thus maintaining the surface C/O below unity. Unlike higher Z models, the scarcity of silicon available in the envelope prevents the formation of silicates in meaningful quantities, sufficient to trigger the acceleration of the wind via radiation pressure on the dust grains formed. No silicate formation occurs below a threshold metallicity of Z=10^{-3}. Low--mass stars, with M< 2.5Msun become carbon stars, forming solid carbon dust in their surroundings. The total dust mass formed depends on the uncertain extent of the inwards penetration of the convective envelope during the Third Dredge--Up episodes following the Thermal Pulses. Carbon grains have sizes 0.08 micron < a_C < 0.12 micron and the total amount of dust formed (increasing with the mass of the star) is M_C=(2-6)*10^{-4}Msun. Our results imply that AGB stars with Z=3*10^{-4} can only contribute to carbon dust enrichment of the interstellar medium on relatively long timescales, > 300 Myr, comparable to the evolutionary time of a 3Msun star. At lower metallicities the scarcity of silicon available and the presence of Hot Bottom Burning even in M< 2Msun, prevents the formation of silicate and carbon grains. We extrapolate our conclusion to more metal--poor environments, and deduce that at Z < 10^{-4} dust enrichment is mostly due to metal condensation in supernova ejecta., 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

We report the detection of broad Halpha emission in three X-ray selected obscured AGNs at z=1-2. By exploiting the Halpha width and the intrinsic X-ray luminosity, we estimate their black hole masses, which are in the range 0.1-3x10^9 Msun. By means of multi-band photometric data, we measure the stellar mass of their host galaxy and, therefore, infer their M_BH/M_star ratio. These are the first obscured AGNs at high-z, selected based on their black hole accretion (i.e. on the basis of their X-ray luminosity), that can be located on the M_BH-M_star relation at high-z. All of these obscured high-z AGNs are fully consistent with the local M_BH-M_star relation. This result conflicts with those for other samples of AGNs in the same redshift range, whose M_BH/M_star ratio departs significantly from the value observed in local galaxies. We suggest that the obscured AGNs in our sample are in an advanced evolutionary stage, have already settled onto the local M_BH-M_star relation, and whose nuclear activity has been temporarily revived by recent galaxy interactions., 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters, slightly revised discussion on SMGs

We present multi-wavelength observations (from optical to sub-millimeter, including Spitzer and SCUBA) of H2XMMJ 003357.2-120038 (also GD158_19), an X-ray selected, luminous narrow-line (Type 2) quasar at z=1.957 selected from the HELLAS2XMM survey. Its broad-band properties can be reasonably well modeled assuming three components: a stellar component to account for the optical and near-IR emission, an AGN component (i.e., dust heated by an accreting active nucleus), dominant in the mid-IR, with an optical depth at 9.7 micron along the line of sight (close to the equatorial plane of the obscuring matter) of tau(9.7)=1 and a full covering angle of the reprocessing matter (torus) of 140 degrees, and a far-IR starburst component (i.e., dust heated by star formation) to reproduce the wide bump observed longward of 70 micron. The derived star-formation rate is about 1500 solar masses per year. The overall modeling indicates that GD158_19 is a high-redshift X-ray luminous, obscured quasar with coeval powerful AGN activity and intense star formation. Here we present some preliminary results obtained for a sample of X‐ray selected, luminous and obscured (Type 2) quasars at z≈1–2 observed in the near‐ and mid‐IR with Spitzer. In particular, adopting a torus configuration for the obscuring (and reprocessing) matter and fitting the quasar Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs), we estimate some geometric parameters for the torus like τ(9.7 μm) and full covering angle, and provide AGN bolometric luminosities and corrections. We also present the interesting case of a z≈2 quasar for which the inclusion of sub‐mm (SCUBA) data allows us to reveal and parameterize coeval nuclear activity and star formation.

Spectra, position, magnitudes and colors are presented for 485 faint (BJ < 20:5) emission line objects selected with the ultraviolet-excess (UVX) criterion on a area of 24.6 deg 2 in the South Galactic Pole. The objects were selected from the analysis of pixel-to-pixel stacking of COSMOS scans of UKST UJ andR plates. We present the broad-band Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of the largest available highly (72%) complete spectroscopic sample of mid-infrared (MIR) selected galaxies and AGN at intermediate redshift. The sample contains 203 extragalactic sources from the 15-micron survey in the ELAIS-SWIRE field S1, all with measured spectroscopic redshift. Most of these sources have full multi-wavelength coverage from the far-UV to the far-infrared and lie in the redshift range 0.110 mJy, while that obtained from optical spectroscopy never being >30%, even at the higher flux densities. The results of this work will be very useful for updating all the models aimed at interpreting the deep infrared survey data and, in particular, for constraining the nature and the role of dust-obscured systems in the intermediate/high-redshift Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.
