We study the penetration of lightning induced whistler waves through the ionosphere by investigating the correspondence between the whistlers observed on the DEMETER and MAGION-5 satellites and the lightning discharges detected by the European lightning detection network EUCLID. We compute all the possible differences between the times when the whistlers were observed on the satellite and times when the lightning discharges were detected. We show that the occurrence histogram for these time differences exhibits a distinct peak for a particular characteristic time, corresponding to the sum of the propagation time and a possible small time shift between the absolute time assigned to the wave record and the clock of the lightning detection network. Knowing this characteristic time, we can search in the EUCLID database for locations, currents, and polarities of causative lightning discharges corresponding to the individual whistlers. We demonstrate that the area in the ionosphere through which the electromagnetic energy induced by a lightning discharge enters into the magnetosphere as whistler mode waves is up to several thousands of kilometres wide.

The properties of Nu whistlers are discussed in the light of observations by the MAGION 5 satellite, and of numerically simulated spectrograms of lightning-induced VLF emissions. The method of simulation is described in full. With the information from this numerical modelling, we distinguish the characteristics of the spectrograms that depend on the site of the lightning strokes from those that are determined mainly by the position of the satellite. Also, we identify the region in the magnetosphere where Nu whistlers are observed most often, and the geomagnetic conditions favouring their appearance. The relation between magnetospherically reflected (MR) whistlers and Nu whistlers is demonstrated by the gradual transformation of MR whistlers into Nu whistlers as the satellite moves from the high-altitude equatorial region to lower altitudes and higher latitudes. The magnetospheric reflection of nonducted whistler-mode waves, which is of decisive importance in the formation of Nu whistlers, is discussed in detail.

After reviewing briefly the present state of knowledge about chorus-like emissions, we present an overview of Magion 5 satellite observations of these emissions in the inner magnetosphere of the Earth. From the extensive VLF data recorded on board the Magion 5 satellite, we show examples of different types of discrete elements, representing rising and falling tones, and discuss their spectral properties, such as the bandwidth and the characteristic frequency as compared to the equatorial electron gyrofrequency. We analyse the possibility of satellite observation of discrete elements, assuming nonducted wave propagation from the source. As for the characteristic dimension of the generation region, we apply the figures obtained from the recently published correlation analysis of chorus emission recorded by four satellites in the Cluster experiment. We conclude that different frequencies in the chorus element should be emitted in a certain span of wave normal angles, so that the whole element could be observed far from the generation region.Key words. We present a detailed study of chorus emissions in the magnetosphere detected on board Magion 5, when the satellite was not far from the magnetic equator. We determine the frequency sweep rate of more than 8500 electromagnetic VLF chorus elements. These results are compared with the backward wave oscillator (BWO) regime of chorus generation. Comparison of the frequency sweep rate with the BWO model shows: (i) There is a correlation between the frequency sweep rates and the chorus amplitudes. The frequency sweep rate increases with chorus amplitude, in accordance with expectations from the BWO model; (ii) The chorus growth rate, estimated from the frequency sweep rate, is in accord with that inferred from the BWO generation mechanism; (iii) The BWO regime of chorus generation ensures the observed decrease in the frequency sweep rate of the chorus elements with increasing L-shell.Key words. A numerical solution of the dispersion equation for electromagnetic waves in a hot magnetized collisionless plasma has shown that, in a current-free ionospheric plasma, the distortion of the electron distribution function reproducing the downward flow of a thermal electron component and the compensating upward flow of the suprathermal electrons, which are responsible for the resulting heat flux, can destabilize quasi-electrostatic ion sound waves. The numerical analysis, performed with ion densities and electron temperature taken from the data recorded by the Interkosmos-24 (IK-24, Aktivny) satellite, is compared with a VLF spectrum registered at the same time on board. This spectrum shows a wide frequency band emission below the local ion plasma frequency. The direction of the electron heat flux inherent to the assumed model of VLF emission generation is discussed

Strong variations of intensity and cutoff frequency of the auroral hiss were observed by INTERBALL-2 and POLAR satellites at high altitudes, poleward from the auroral oval. The hiss intensifications are correlated with the auroral activations during substorms and/or pseudo-breakups. The low cutoff frequency of auroral hiss increases with the distance between the aurora and the satellite footprint. Multicomponent wave measurements of the hiss emissions on board the POLAR spacecraft show that the horizontal component of the Poynting flux of auroral hiss changes its direction in good accordance with longitudinal displacements of the bright auroras. The vertical component of the Poynting flux is directed upward from the aurora region, indicating that hiss could be generated by upgoing electron beams. This relationship between hiss and the aurora dynamics means that the upgoing electron beams are closely related to downgoing electron beams which produce the aurora. During the auroral activations the upgoing and downgoing beams move and change their intensities simultaneously. Keywords. VLF-ELF broadband measurements onboard the MAGION 4 and 5 satellites at heights above 1 Re in plasmasphere provide new data on various known phenomena related to ducted and nonducted whistler wave propagation. Two examples are discussed: magnetospherically reflected (MR) whistlers and lower hybrid resonance (LHR) noise band. We present examples of rather complicated MR whistler spectrograms not reported previously and argue the conditions for their generation. Analytical consideration, together with numerical modelling, yield understanding of the main features of those spectrograms. LHR noise band, as well as MR whistlers, is a phenomenon whose source is the energy propagating in the nonducted way. At the plasmaspheric heights, where hydrogen (H+) is the prevailing ion, and electron plasma frequency is much larger than gyrofrequency, the LHR frequency is close to its maximumvalue in a given magnetic field. This frequency is well followed by the observed noise bands. The lower cutoff frequency of this band is somewhat below that maximum value. The reason for this, as well as the possibility of using the LHR noise bands for locating the plasma through position, are discussed.Key words. Magnetospheric physics (plasmasphere; wave propagation)
