Abstract

Abstract The two-detector design of the NOvA neutrino oscillation experiment, in which two functionally identical detectors are exposed to an intense neutrino beam, aids in canceling leading order effects of cross-section uncertainties. However, limited knowledge of neutrino interaction cross sections still gives rise to some of the largest systematic uncertainties in current oscillation measurements. We show contemporary models of neutrino interactions to be discrepant with data from NOvA, consistent with discrepancies seen in other experiments. Adjustments to neutrino interaction models in GENIE are presented, creating an effective model that improves agreement with our data. We also describe systematic uncertainties on these models, including uncertainties on multi-nucleon interactions from a newly developed procedure using NOvA near detector data.

Abstract

We report the rate of cosmic ray air showers with multiplicities exceeding 15 muon tracks recorded in the NOvA Far Detector between May 2016 and May 2018. The detector is located on the surface under an overburden of 3.6 meters water equivalent. We observe a seasonal dependence in the rate of multiple-muon showers, which varies in magnitude with multiplicity and zenith angle. During this period, the effective atmospheric temperature and surface pressure ranged between 210 K and 230 K and 940 mbar and 990 mbar, respectively; the shower rates are anticorrelated with the variation in the effective temperature. The variations are about 30% larger for the highest multiplicities than the lowest multiplicities and 20% larger for showers near the horizon than vertical showers.

Abstract

This Letter reports results from the first long-baseline search for sterile antineutrinos mixing in an accelerator-based antineutrino-dominated beam. The rate of neutral-current interactions in the two NOvA detectors, at distances of 1 km and 810 km from the beam source, is analyzed using an exposure of $12.51\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at Fermilab running in antineutrino mode. A total of $121$ of neutral-current candidates are observed at the Far Detector, compared to a prediction of $122\pm11$(stat.)$\pm15$(syst.) assuming mixing between three active flavors. No evidence for $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}\rightarrow\bar{\nu}_{s}$ oscillation is observed. Interpreting this result within a 3+1 model, constraints are placed on the mixing angles ${\theta}_{24} < 25^{\circ}$ and ${\theta}_{34} < 32^{\circ}$ at the 90% C.L. for $0.05$eV$^{2} \leq \Delta m^{2}_{41} \leq 0.5$eV$^{2}$, the range of mass splittings that produces no significant oscillations at the Near Detector. Abstract

The NOvA experiment has made a $4.4\sigma$-significant observation of $\bar\nu_{e}$ appearance in a 2 GeV $\bar\nu_{\mu}$ beam at a distance of 810 km. Using $12.33\times10^{20}$ protons on target delivered to the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beamline, the experiment recorded 27 $\bar\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \bar\nu_{e}$ candidates with a background of 10.3 and 102 $\bar\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \bar\nu_{\mu}$ candidates. This new antineutrino data is combined with neutrino data to measure the oscillation parameters $|\Delta m^2_{32}| = 2.48^{+0.11}_{-0.06}\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2/c^4$, $\sin^2 \theta_{23} = 0.56^{+0.04}_{-0.03}$ in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy and upper octant and excludes most values near $\delta_{\rm CP}=\pi/2$ for the inverted mass hierarchy by more than 3$\sigma$. The data favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy by 1.9$\sigma$ and $\theta_{23}$ values in the upper octant by 1.6$\sigma$., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We present results from a case study comparing different multivariate classification methods. The input is a set of Monte Carlo data, generated and approximately triggered and pre-processed for an imaging gamma-ray Cherenkov telescope. Such data belong to two classes, originating either from incident gamma rays or caused by hadronic showers. There is only a weak discrimination between signal (gamma) and background (hadrons), making the data an excellent proving ground for classification techniques. The data and methods are described, and a comparison of the results is made. Several methods give results comparable in quality within small fluctuations, suggesting that they perform at or close to the Bayesian limit of achievable separation. Other methods give clearly inferior or inconclusive results. Some problems that this study can not address are also discussed.

Abstract

This paper describes an application of a neural network (NN) approach to standard model and minimal supersymmetry standard model Higgs search in the associated production t t H with H → b b . This decay channel is considered as a discovery channel for Higgs scenarios for Higgs boson masses in the range 80– 130 GeV . An NN model with a special type of data flow is used to separate t t jj background from H → b b events. This NN combines a classical NN and linear decision tree. Parameters of these NNs are randomly generated and a population of predefined size of those networks is trained as an initial generation for a subsequent genetic algorithm optimization. A genetic algorithm tunes parameters of further NN individuals derived from the previous NNs by GA operations of crossover and mutation. The goal of this GA process is optimization of the final NN performance. Our results show that NN approach is applicable to the problem of Higgs boson detection. NN filters can be used to emphasize the difference of the Mbb distribution for events accepted by filter (with better signal/background rate) and the Mbb distribution for original events (with original signal/background rate) with no loss of significance. This improvement of the shape of the Mbb distribution can be used as a criterion for existence of Higgs boson decay in considered discovery channel.

We introduce a notion of so called univalent neural networks realizing injective mapping and sharing the input and output space. First, we postulate necessary and sufficient conditions of univalence and derive several models of univalent nets. Then explore learning algorithms that could be used for the defined network class - special variants of backpropagation learning.

Abstract

Laser interferometers using quadro-phase detectors for the fringe counting are frequently used for ultra-precise displacement measurements. The accuracy of interferometers in nanometrology is limited mainly by the interpolation error of the detector system. The new method based on applications of curve fitting using nonlinear last square method was developed for correcting the interpolation error of quadro-phase detectors. The results from the experimental data obtained in interferometrical comparator CMI IK-1 are presented.

Abstract

The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using 8.02×10^{20} protons-on-target in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by ≃17% systematic rather than the ≃7.4% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on Q^{2} (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1  GeV≤E&#95;{ν}<6  GeV. Detailed comparisons are made to the predictions of the GENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. The data do not strongly favor a model over the others consistently across all three cross sections measured, though some models have especially good or poor agreement in the single differential cross section vs Q^{2}.

Abstract

This Letter reports results from the first long-baseline search for sterile antineutrinos mixing in an accelerator-based antineutrino-dominated beam. The rate of neutral-current interactions in the two NOvA detectors, at distances of 1 and 810 km from the beam source, is analyzed using an exposure of 12.51×10^{20} protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at Fermilab running in antineutrino mode. A total of 121 of neutral-current candidates are observed at the far detector, compared to a prediction of 122±11(stat.)±15(syst.) assuming mixing only between three active flavors. No evidence for ν[over ¯]&#95;{μ}→ν[over ¯]&#95;{s} oscillation is observed. Interpreting this result within a 3+1 model, constraints are placed on the mixing angles θ&#95;{24}<25° and θ&#95;{34}<32° at the 90% C.L. for 0.05  eV^{2}≤Δm&#95;{41}^{2}≤0.5  eV^{2}, the range of mass splittings that produces no significant oscillations at the near detector. These are the first 3+1 confidence limits set using long-baseline accelerator antineutrinos.

Abstract

The NOvA experiment has seen a 4.4σ signal of ν[over ¯]&#95;{e} appearance in a 2 GeV ν[over ¯]&#95;{μ} beam at a distance of 810 km. Using 12.33×10^{20} protons on target delivered to the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beamline, the experiment recorded 27 ν[over ¯]&#95;{μ}→ν[over ¯]&#95;{e} candidates with a background of 10.3 and 102 ν[over ¯]&#95;{μ}→ν[over ¯]&#95;{μ} candidates. This new antineutrino data are combined with neutrino data to measure the parameters |Δm&#95;{32}^{2}|=2.48&#95;{-0.06}^{+0.11}×10^{-3}  eV^{2}/c^{4} and sin^{2}θ&#95;{23} in the ranges from (0.53-0.60) and (0.45-0.48) in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The data exclude most values near δ&#95;{CP}=π/2 for the inverted mass hierarchy by more than 3σ and favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy by 1.9σ and θ&#95;{23} values in the upper octant by 1.6σ.
