The triceps surae is comprised of the soleus, and medial (MG) and lateral (LG) gastrocnemii. Modulation of triceps surae motor units (MUs) is context- and muscle-dependent, yet it is unknown how the disparate components of the triceps surae work together to achieve the common goal of high-intensity voluntary isometric plantar flexion torque gradation. Thus, the purpose was to assess the interrelationships between MU recruitment thresholds (MURTs) and MU discharge rates (MUDRs) among these three muscles during contractions from low to high intensities. We sampled 157 MU action potential trains from the MG (68), LG (38) and soleus (51) using fine-wire intramuscular electromyography (EMG) during voluntary ramp isometric contractions up to 100% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The soleus exhibited 41% and 54% lower MURTs compared to the MG (p 0.0001) and LG (p 0.0001), respectively, whereas MG MURTs were 22% lower than the LG (p 0.0001). Initial MUDRs were 35% and 26% greater for the LG compared with the MG (p 0.0001) and soleus (p 0.0001), but no difference was detected between the MG and soleus (p = 0.28). Finally, initial MUDRs displayed a positive relationship with MURTs for each independent triceps surae component (p ≤ 0.002). The relative differences in MU properties of each muscle in this synergistic group illustrate that MU control strategies are likely optimized with respect to the relative contribution of each muscle to plantar flexion torque or functional roles.

Based on the KASCADE multi-detector system with its large hadron calorimeter and using the CORSIKA simulation program with the implemented high-energy hadronic interaction models QGSJET, VENUS, DPMJET, SIBYLL, and HDPM, a method for the test of models by comparing el ent rates is described. Preliminary results show differences of the model predictions both among each other and when confronted with measurements. The rates are strongly influenced by the inelastic cross sections and the elasticity, especially by the contribution of diffractive dissociation. The discrepancy to measurements at primary energies below similar or equal to 3 (.) 10(13) eV can be reduced by increasing the non-diffractive inelastic cross section.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency of myocardial infarction (MI) prior to the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and within the first 2 years of follow-up.METHODS: The systemic lupus international collaborating clinics (SLICC) atherosclerosis inception cohort enters patients within 15 months of SLE diagnosis. MIs were reported and attributed on a specialised vascular event form. MIs were confirmed by one or more of the following: abnormal ECG, typical or atypical symptoms with ECG abnormalities and elevated enzymes (≥2 times upper limit of normal), or abnormal stress test, echocardiogram, nuclear scan or angiogram. Descriptive statistics were used.RESULTS: 31 of 1848 patients who entered the cohort had an MI. Of those, 23 patients had an MI prior to SLE diagnosis or within the first 2 years of disease. Of the 23 patients studied, 60.9% were female, 78.3% were Caucasian, 8.7% black, 8.7% Hispanic and 4.3% other. The mean age at SLE diagnosis was 52.5±15.0 years. Of the 23 MIs that occurred, 16 MIs occurred at a mean of 6.1±7.0 years prior to diagnosis and 7 occurred within the first 2 years of follow-up. Risk factors associated with early MI in univariate analysis are male sex, Caucasian, older age at diagnosis, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, family history of MI and smoking. In multivariate analysis only age (OR=1.06 95% CI 1.03 to 1.09), hypertension (OR=5.01, 95% CI 1.38 to 18.23), hypercholesterolaemia (OR=4.43, 95% CI 1.51 to 12.99) and smoking (OR=7.50, 95% CI 2.38 to 23.57) remained significant risk factors.CONCLUSIONS: In some patients with lupus, MI may develop even before the diagnosis of SLE or shortly thereafter, suggesting that there may be a link between autoimmune inflammation and atherosclerosis.

The electron and muon number of extensive air showers (EAS) measured at ground level are the main observables of the detector array of the KASCADE experiment. The two-dimensional frequency distribution of these observables is used for reconstructing the energy spectra of five elemental groups representing the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 1015 eV to 1017 eV. The results of the presented unfolding analysis depend crucially on simulations of EAS, and therefore on the hadronic interaction models used for their generation. As it turns out, the results for the individual energy spectra show to be sensitive to the characteristics of the interaction model used. Furthermore, none of the models discussed (QGSJet and SIBYLL) is capable to describe the data consistently over the whole measurement range with discrepancies appearing in different energy regions.

Objective—To determine whether heavy (≥ 680 kg [≥ 1,500 lb]) draft horses undergoing surgical treatment for acute signs of abdominal pain were at a greater risk for anesthetic and postoperative complications and lower postoperative survival rates than light (< 680 kg) draft horses. Design—Retrospective case series. Animals—72 draft horses. Procedures—Medical records of draft horses that underwent exploratory celiotomy for signs of acute abdominal pain from October 1983 to December 2002 were reviewed. Medical records of draft horses in which a celiotomy was performed for correction of reproductive abnormalities were not included in the study. Results—When compared with light draft horses, heavy draft horses had longer durations of anesthesia, more postoperative complications, and lower survival rates. Seventy-six percent of horses that recovered from anesthesia had postoperative complications. Postoperative complications associated with low survival rates included myopathy and neuropathy, ileus, diarrhea, and endotoxemia. All horses with postoperative myopathy and neuropathy died or were euthanized. The short-term survival rate for horses that recovered from anesthesia was 60%. Horses undergoing small intestinal surgery had a worse prognosis for short-term survival than those undergoing large intestinal surgery. The survival rate for horses for which long-term (> 1 year) follow-up information was available was 50%. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Draft horses weighing > 680 kg that underwent surgery because of acute signs of abdominal pain had longer durations of anesthesia, more postoperative complications, and higher mortality rates than draft horses weighing < 680 kg.

KASCADE is a multi-detector setup to get redundant information on single air shower basis. The information is used to perform multiparameter analyses to solve the threefold problem of the reconstruction of (i)the unknown primary energy, (ii) the primary mass, and (iii) to quantify the characteristics of the hadronic interactions in the air-shower development. In this talk recent results of the KASCADE data analyses are summarized concerning cosmic ray anisotropy studies, determination of flux spectra for different primary mass groups, and approaches to test hadronic interaction models. Neither large scale anisotropies nor point sources were found in the KASCADE data set. The energy spectra of the light element groups result in a knee-like bending and a steepening above the knee. The topology of the individual knee positions shows a dependency on the primary particle. Though no hadronic interaction model is fully able to describe the multi-parameter data of KASCADE consistently, the more recent models or improved versions of older models reproduce the data better than few years ago., Comment: to appear in Nucl. To investigate the impact of uncertainties in the knowledge of properties of individual hadronic interactions on the development of extensive air showers, the inelastic proton-proton cross section and the elasticity of interactions have been modified within the interaction model QGSJET. Air shower simulations are performed using the CORSIKA code. The influence of the modifications on observables like the number of electrons, muons, and hadrons registered at ground level are investigated. The predictions are compared to measurements of the KASCADE experiment.

Using the correlations of the hadronic, electromagnetic, and muonic components of extensive air showers measured with the experiment KASCADE the influence of hadronic interaction models on the simulation of air showers is investigated. For the simulations CORSIKA with GHEISHA and FLUKA as low-energy models and DPMJET, SIBYLL, and QGSJET as high-energy models have been used.

Directional information on air showers from the KASCADE Array and on muons registered in the Muon Tracking Detector (MTD) allow to investigate pseudorapidity and momentum distributions of muons. The possibility to test hadronic interaction models, to study primary mass composition and parameters of hadronic interactions with these distributions is discussed.

In the presented analysis of air shower data measured with the KASCADE experiment energy spectra for five mass groups are reconstructed. The results show a change of composition towards heavier elements across the knee but also demonstrate an insufficient description of the data by the used hadronic interaction models QGSJet and SIBYLL.

Recent results of the KASCADE air shower experiment are presented, in order to shed some light on the astrophysics of cosmic rays in the region of the knee in the energy spectrum. The results include investigations of high-energy interactions in the atmosphere, the analysis of the arrival directions of cosmic rays, the determination of the mean logarithmic mass, and the unfolding of energy spectra for elemental groups.

Recent results from the KASCADE experiment on measurements of cosmic rays in the energy range of the knee are presented. Emphasis is placed on energy spectra of individual mass groups as obtained from an two-dimensional unfolding applied to the reconstructed electron and truncated muon numbers of each individual EAS. The data show a knee-like structure in the energy spectra of light primaries (p, He, C) and an increasing dominance of heavy ones (A > 20) towards higher energies. This basic result is robust against uncertainties of the applied interaction models QGSJET and SIBYLL which are used in the shower simulations to analyse the data. Slight differences observed between experimental data and EAS simulations provide important clues for further improvements of the interaction models. The data are complemented by new limits on global anisotropies in the arrival directions of CRs and by upper limits on point sources. KASCADE has been designed to measure air showers of primary cosmic-ray energies in the PeV region and to investigate the knee phenomenon in the all-particle energy spectrum. Several observations are measured simultaneously for each event by different detector systems. The experiment started to take data in 1996 and has been completed and extended since then. The individual detector systems and their performances are described. Also, the experience in long-term operation of the experiment and the interplay between different components is outlined.

The KASCADE experiment measures a high number of EAS observables with a large degree of sampling of the electron–photon, muon, and hadron components. It provides accurate data for an event-by-event analysis of the primary cosmic ray flux in the energy range around the knee. The possibility of selecting samples of enriched proton and iron induced extensive air showers by applying the statistical techniques of multivariate analyses is scrutinized using detailed Monte Carlo simulations of three different primaries. The purity and efficiency of the proton and iron classification probability is investigated. After obtaining enriched samples from the measured data by application of the procedures the reconstructed number of hadrons, hadronic energy and other parameters are investigated in the primary

The attenuation of the electron shower size beyond the shower maximum is studied with the KASCADE extensive air shower (EAS) experiment in the primary energy range of about 10 14 –10 16 eV. Attenuation and absorption lengths are determined by applying different approaches, including the method of constant intensity, the decrease of the flux of EASs with increasing zenith angle, and its variation with ground pressure. We observe a significant dependence of the results on the applied method. The determined values of the attenuation length ranges from 175 to 196 g/cm 2 and of the absorption length from 100 to 120 g/cm 2 . The origin of these differences is discussed emphasizing the influence of intrinsic shower fluctuations.

The hadronic component of extensive air showers is investigated with the large calorimeter of the KASCADE experiment. The transverse momentum transfer in EAS is explored by investigations of the geometrical structure in the hadronic shower core and the arrival times of hadrons. The flux of unaccompanied hadrons is studied to probe hadronic cross sections. The measured results are compatible with simulations using CORSIKA/QGSJET.

The interpretation of extensive air shower measurements often requires the comparison with EAS simulations. These calculations rely on hadronic interaction models which have to extrapolate into kinematical and energy regions not covered by present-day collider experiments. The KASCADE experiment with its large hadron calorimeter and its detectors for the electromagnetic and muonic components provides experimental data to check hadronic interaction models. For the EAS simulations the program CORSIKA with several hadronic event generators embedded is used. Different hadronic observables are investigated as well as their correlations with the electromagnetic and muonic components. Comparing the interaction models QGSJET 98, NEXUS II, and DPMJET 11.5, it is found, that QGSJET describes the data best.

Using the facilities of the KASCADE Central Detector EAS muon arrival time distributions, observed with reference to the arrival time of the first locally registered muon, and their correlations with other EAS observables have been investigated at different distances R μ from the shower axis. Invoking detailed Monte Carlo simulations non-parametric multivariate even-by-event analyses have been performed for an estimate of the primary mass composition. The consistency of the Monte Carlo simulations is studied by comparing the primary mass composition results inferred from observations at different R μ and different muon multiplicity thresholds n th .

The key observables of the KASCADE field array are the electron and muon number of extensive air showers. Using the size spectra of these measured quantities and their correlations with energy and primary mass it is possible to reconstruct the energy spectra of individual mass groups. The analysis relies on the application of unfolding methods. The resulting spectra of the light components show a knee-like feature. The positions of the individual knees suggest a dependence on the primary charge even if the statistical and systematical significance has to be improved.

Using the facilities of the KASCADE Central Detector extensive air showers (EAS) muon arrival time distributions, observed with reference to the arrival time of the first locally registered muon, and their correlations with other EAS observables have been experimentally investigated. The variation of adequately defined time parameters with the distance Rl from the EAS axis has been measured. The experimental data enable a study of the sensitivity of such local arrival time distributions, which characterise the structure of the shower disc, to the mass composition of cosmic rays in the energy region around the knee. For that purpose, non-parametric multivariate even-by-event analyses have been performed for an estimate of the mass composition specified by three different mass groups, invoking detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the EAS development. It turns out that local muon arrival time distributions, without information

Frequency distributions of local muon densities in high-energy extensive air showers (EAS) are presented as signature of the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum in the knee region. Together with the gross shower variables like shower core position, angle of incidence, and the shower sizes, the KASCADE experiment is able to measure local muon densities for two different muon energy thresholds. The spectra have been reconstructed for various core distances, as well as for particular subsamples, classified on the basis of the shower size ratio N μ / N e . The measured density spectra of the total sample exhibit clear kinks reflecting the knee of the primary energy spectrum. While relatively sharp changes of the slopes are observed in the spectrum of EAS with small values of the shower size ratio, no such feature is detected at EAS of large N μ / N e ratio in the energy range of 1–10 PeV. Comparing the spectra for various thresholds and core distances with detailed Monte Carlo simulations the validity of EAS simulations is discussed.

The experiment KASCADE observes simultaneously the electron–photon, muon, and hadron components of high-energy extensive air showers (EAS). The analysis of EAS observables for an estimate of energy and mass of the primary particle invokes extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the EAS development for preparing reference patterns. The present studies utilize the air shower simulation code corsika with the hadronic interaction models VENUS, QGSJet and Sibyll, including simulations of the detector response and efficiency. By applying non-parametric techniques the measured data have been analyzed in an event-by-event mode and the mass and energy of the EAS inducing particles are reconstructed. Special emphasis is given to methodical limitations and the dependence of the results on the hadronic interaction model used. The results obtained from KASCADE data reproduce the knee in the primary spectrum, but reveal a strong model dependence. Owing to the systematic uncertainties introduced by the hadronic interaction models no strong change of chemical composition can be claimed in the energy range around the knee.

KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) is a multi-detector setup to observe the electromagnetic, muonic and hadronic air shower components simultaneously in the energy region around the “knee” of the primary spectrum. Its main aim is to determine energy spectrum and composition of hadrons in primary cosmic rays. This is attempted by registring a large number of observables for each EAS including measurements of electrons, muons and hadrons. This contribution gives a short description of the experiment and then presents some results on the lateral distributions of various particle types and on the spectrum of hadrons. The status of our analyses to determine mass composition is presented in an accompanying contribution by A. Haungs.

KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) is a multi-detector setup to observe the electromagnetic, muonic and hadronic air shower components simultaneously at primary energies in the region of the “knee”. A large number of observables per single shower are registered. The main aims of the experiment are the determination of the primary energy spectrum around the “knee” and the energy variation of the chemical composition. The measurements reveal an increasing mean mass of the primary cosmic rays above the observed kink, and a sharper knee for the light primary component than for the all-particle spectrum, and the absence of a knee for the heavy component between 1 and 10 PeV.

An iron sampling calorimeter for cosmic-ray hadrons used in the centre of a large air shower experiment is described. The iron absorber is interspersed with eight layers of ionisation chambers filled with the room-temperature liquids tetramethylsilane and tetramethylpentane. Experiences gained from the calorimeter, its performance and long-term stability are presented. For energies in the TeV range shower profiles and transition curves have been measured and are compared with Monte Carlo calculations employing the FLUKA code. Good agreement has been found except in the lateral halo region. In the outer regions the energy deposition found is smaller than that obtained by the simulations.

New data on the muon/electron ratio derived from the KASCADE extensive air shower experiment are presented. This ratio is known to be the most sensitive parameter in the determination of the mass of the primary particle when using ground array data. The particle numbers are measured with the KASCADE array comprising 500 m 2 of e/γ- and 620 m 2 of μ - detectors. The primary mass is inferred on an event-by-event basis by comparing the experimental data to corresponding EAS simulations. We observe a change towards a heavier composition with increasing energy above the knee. The sensitivity of this result to the specific hadronic interaction model employed in the simulations (e.g. VENUS and QGSJET) is discussed.

We tested an adaptation of a technique for performing magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of human cadaver limbs in the horse. The forelimbs from a normal horse were collected, frozen, and sealed with a paraffin-polymer combination prior to imaging with either a high- or midfield magnetic resonance scanner. Each forelimb was defrosted, scanned, and refrozen on two separate occasions. A five-point scale was used to evaluate the quality of each set of sagittal and transverse, T1-weighted images of each digit. There was no difference in image quality between first and second scans of either specimen (p > 0.05). We conclude that this technique allows investigators to bank tissue specimens for future magnetic resonance imaging without significant loss of image quality.

A Limited Streamer Tube (LST) detector system has been installed at the KASCADE-Grande experiment to study the Extensive Air Showers (EAS) muon component above a threshold of 2.4 GeV. The extended area of 255 m2 of the LST and the fine granularity of detection enables a detailed study of the muon spatial distribution in the very central zone of the air shower. A dedicated, fractal based analysis has been developed to take advantage of the observables of this detector setup. The sensitivity on cosmic rays mass and energy discrimination has been verified, based on 1.5 years of data collection by the KASCADE experiment.

The KASCADE-Grande experiment extends the existing extensive air shower experiment KASCADE by an array of 37 detector stations spread over an area of 0.5 km2. The new Grande array measures the charged component of the showers. To reconstruct the mass composition of the cosmic rays, additional information from the muon component of air showers is required. Using observables from the new Grande array together with the muon detectors of the original KASCADE array provides a possibility to reconstruct also the total muon number of each air shower. The quality of reconstruction based on comparison with simulated data, as well as first results of a reconstructed muon size spectrum are presented.

LOFAR is a new digital radio interferometer that is being build in The Netherlands. By sampling the radio waves with fast ADCs it can digitally store the whole waveform information and analyze transient events like air showers after they have been recorded. To demonstrate its ability to measure air showers we are building LOPES (a LOFAR PrototypeStation) at the site of an existing air shower array (KASCADE-Grande). The first phase consisting of 10 antennas is already running. It has demonstrated how digital interference suppression and beamforming can overcome the problem of radio interference and pick out air shower events.

Anisotropies in the arrival directions of cosmic rays reflect their source distribution and propagation properties. In the presented analysis extensive air shower measurements with KASCADE are analyzed with respect to large and small scale anisotropies. The resulting upper limits on large scale anisotropy amplitudes of 10-3 to 10-2 restrict the parameter space of several propagation models. No cosmic ray point sources could be found in a sky survey of the northern hemisphere. Typical upper flux limits for point sources are around 10-10 m -2 s -1.

External coaptation of radial-ulnar and tibial fractures with casts or modified Thomas splint-cast combinations is a useful treatment. The economics of therapy make this method of treatment feasible for commercial animals. Current estimates for the cost of treatment of tibial fractures with Thomas splint-cast combinations are $225.00 for calves and $410.00 for cattle if the metal splints are reused. Casts have similar costs. The availability of external coaptation techniques to all veterinarians and the success of treatment make external coaptation a good method for the treatment of many tibial and radial-ulnar fractures in cattle.

Decision making in ruminant orthopedics is determined by many factors, the most of important of which is age, size, and value of the patient, the nature of the injury, the prognosis for effective treatment and satisfactory healing, the intentions of the client, and the experiences of the veterinarian. Ruminant orthopedics currently is expanding to include the treatment of llamas and small ruminants as companion animals in addition to the treatment of valuable livestock. The future promises increasing sophistication in treatments and an ever higher quality of patient care.

SummaryTotal hip replacement (THR) using two different human implant designs was performed in three ponies. Pony # 1 sustained a fracture of the ipsilateral femur and was euthanatized 40 hours after implantation of a human selfcentering hip. The same implant, with a modified femoral prosthesis, was used in pony # 2. It luxated initially at 26 hours, was surgically reduced after changing to a smaller diameter acetabular component, and reluxated at day 23 when the pony was euthanatized. A modified femoral component with a press-fit, screw-fixated acetabular prosthesis was inserted in pony # 3. This pony was maintained for 232 days and sustained over 400,000 cycles on the prosthesis by being exercised daily on a mechanical walker. We conclude that THR is feasible in ponies and small horses and would allow this size of animal to be used as a research model for hip replacement in heavy human beings.Total hip replacement (THR) was evaluated in three ponies as a model for studying THR problems in humans and for the management of coxofemo-ral disease in small Equidae. A modified cemented human femoral component, with a press-fit acetabular component, was maintained in one pony for 232 days, sustained over 400,000 cycles, and established the feasibility of THR in this species.

KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) is determining flux spectra for different primary mass groups to disentangle the knee feature of the primary cosmic-ray energy spectrum. The energy spectra of the light element groups result in a knee-like bending and a steepening above the knee. The topology of the individual knee positions suggests a rigidity dependence. To proof the rigidity dependence the KASCADE array is now extended by a factor 10 in area. The major goal of KASCADE-Grande is the observation of the ’iron-knee’ in the cosmic-ray spectrum at around 100 PeV which is expected following the KASCADE observations. PACS: 98.70.Sa Cosmic rays

Measurements of electron, muon, and hadron lateral distributions of extensive air showers as recorded by the KASCADE experiment are presented. The data cover the energy range from about 5x10^14 eV up to almost 10^17 eV and extend from the inner core region to distances of 200 m. The electron and muon distributions are corrected for mutual contaminations by taking into account the detector properties in the experiment. All distributions are well described by NKG-functions. The scale radii describing the electron and hadron data best are approx. 30 m and 10 m, respectively. The temporal structure of the extensive air shower (EAS) muon component (E-thres = 2.4 GeV) is studied at sea level by measurements of the muon arrival time distributions using the muon detection facilities of the KASCADE central detector. Data have been analysed for EAS core distances up to 110 m for primary energies around the knee region. The time structure of the EAS muon component is represented by the distributions of the mean, median, first quartile and the third quartile of the muon arrival time distributions relative to the foremost muon. The EAS time profiles (variation with the distance from the EAS center) are studied along their dependencies on the angle of incidence and the energy-indicative muon number N-mu(tr). Effects of the fluctuation of the arrival time of the first registered muon are scrutinised and corrected. The experimental results are compared with EAS Monte Carlo (CORSIKA-GEANT) simulations, fully including the detector responses and illustrating the phenomenological features. The comparisons, though generally in fair global agreement, revealed that the simulations underestimate the shower thickness and show nearly no dependence on the mass composition if the time resolution of the apparatus is realistically taken into account. A high‐speed digitizer/averager data‐acquisition system designed and built as part of a 300‐MHz Fourier transform electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer is described. There are two key features of the system: (1) the maximum digitizing rate is 300 Msamples/s and (2) a 256‐point free‐induction‐decay signal running summation can be updated in less than 3 μs. At the maximum digitizing rate, the system can sum 65 536 FIDs in 220 ms. The system consists of an analog‐to‐digital converter/adder unit (ADCA) and an IBM compatible personal computer. The ADCA is comprised of a digitizer, high‐speed sample buffers, high‐speed adders/memory, and control hardware. Design techniques, such as parallel processing, utilized to meet the high‐speed performance requirements are described. Trigger and timing signals for the system are derived from the spectrometer. System efficiency, synchronization, and time base stability are demonstrated in the spectrometer at a sampling frequency of 200 MHz. Signal‐to‐noise ratio enhancements are shown using a lithium phthalocyanine test sample.

The main goals of the KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) experiment are the determination of the energy spectrum and elemental composition of the charged cosmic rays in the energy range around the knee at ca. 5 PeV. Due to the large number of measured observables per single shower a variety of different approaches are applied to the data, preferably on an event-by-event basis. Regional perfusion of carpal tissues by forced intramedullary administration of fluids was evaluated in 10 horses. Results of subtraction radiography after perfusion with a contrast medium demonstrated that perfusate was delivered to the carpal tissues by the venous system. Perfused India ink was distributed uniformly in the antebrachiocarpal and middle carpal synovial membranes. Histologically, the ink was within the venules of the synovial villi. Immediately after perfusion with gentamicin sulfate (1 g), the gentamicin concentrations in the synovial fluid and synovial membrane of the antebrachiocarpal joint were 349 +/- 240 micrograms/mL and 358 +/- 264 micrograms/g, respectively. When gentamicin concentrations in the synovial fluid of the antebrachiocarpal joint and serum were measured 0, 0.5, 1, 4, 8, 12, and 24 hours after carpal perfusion, the mean peak gentamicin concentration in the synovial fluid was 589 +/- 429 micrograms/mL. At hour 24, the mean gentamicin concentration in the synovial fluid was 4.8 +/- 2.0 micrograms/mL. The resulting peak gentamicin concentration in the serum was 23.7 +/- 14.5 micrograms/mL immediately after the perfusion; it decreased below the desired trough level of 1 micrograms/mL between hours 4 and 8.

Occasionally cosmic-ray induced air showers result in single, unaccompanied hadrons at ground level. Such events are investigated with the 300 m2 hadron calorimeter of the KASCADE-Grande experiment. It is an iron sampling calorimeter with a depth of 11 hadronic interaction lengths read out by warm-liquid ionization chambers. The longitudinal shower development is discussed as function of energy up to 30 TeV and the results are compared with simulations using the GEANT/FLUKA code. In addition, results of test measurements at a secondary particle beam of the Super Proton Synchrotron at CERN up to 350 GeV are discussed.

A composition analysis of KASCADE air shower data is performed by means of unfolding the two-dimensional frequency spectrum of electron and muon numbers. Aim of the analysis is the determination of energy spectra for elemental groups representing the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays. Since such an analysis depends crucially on simulations of air showers the two different hadronic interaction models QGSJet and SIBYLL are used for their generation. The resulting primary energy spectra show that the knee in the all particle spectrum is due to a steepening of the spectra of light elements but, also, that neither of the two simulation sets is able to describe the measured data consistently over the whole energy range with discrepancies appearing in different energy regions., Comment: 39 pages, accepted for publication in Astropart. The geometric distribution of high-energy hadrons >100 GeV in shower cores measured with the KASCADE calorimeter is analyzed. The data are checked for sensitivity to hadronic interaction features and indications of new physics as discussed in the literature. The angular correlation of the most energetic hadrons and in particular the fraction of events with hadrons being aligned are quantified by means of the commonly used parameter lambda_4. The analysis shows that the observed lambda_4 distribution is compatible with that predicted by simulations and is not linked to an angular correlation from hadronic jet production at high energy. Another parameter, d_4^max, describing distances between hadrons measured in the detector, is found to be sensitive both to the transverse momenta in secondary hadron production and the primary particle type. Transverse momenta in high-energy hadron interactions differing by a factor two or more from what is assumed in the standard simulations are disfavoured by the measured d_4^max distribution., 8 pages, 9 figures; accepted for publication by Phys. Two horses were admitted for evaluation of mandibular swelling (horse 1) or maxillary distortion (horse 2). Both horses had radiographic evidence of tumors of dental origin that had the appearance of a compound odontoma. Extensive surgical resection was performed for treatment. Horse 1 was treated with 1-stage surgical resection, but an iatrogenic fracture occurred during surgery, which was managed successfully with a type I external fixator and extraoral alimentation. Horse 2 was treated in multiple stages to remove all portions of the tumor. To manage an extensive orosinal fistula, a custom-designed dental bridge was constructed to occlude the fistula. For both horses, the histopathologic diagnosis was compound odontoma. Compound odontomas are benign, locally expansive tumors of dental origin. Compound odontomas can be treated successfully; however, multiple surgeries may be necessary.

Radio pulses emitted in the Atmosphere during the air shower development of high-energy primary cosmic rays were measured during the late 1960ies in the frequency range from 2 MHz to 520 MHz. Mainly due to difficulties with radio interference these measurements ceased in the late 1970ies. LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) is a new digital radio interferometer under development. Using high bandwidth ADCs and fast data processing it it will be able to filter out most of the interference. By storing the whole waveform information in digital form one can analyze transient events like air showers even after they have been recorded. To test this new technology and to demonstrate its ability to measure air showers a "LOFAR Prototype Station" (LOPES) is set up to operate in conjunction with an existing air shower array (KASCADE-Grande). The first phase consisting of 10 antennas is already running. It operates in the frequency range of 40 to 80 MHz, using simple short dipole antennas and direct 2nd Nyquist sampling of the incoming wave. It has proven to be able to do simple astronomical measurements, like imaging of a solar burst. It has also demonstrated how digital interference suppression and beamforming can overcome the problem of radio interference and pick out air shower events.

KASCADE-Grande is the extension of the multi-detector setup KASCADE to cover a primary cosmic ray energy range from 100 TeV to 1 EeV. The enlarged EAS experiment provides comprehensive observations of cosmic rays in the energy region around the knee. Grande is an array of 700 x 700 sqm equipped with 37 plastic scintillator stations sensitive to measure energy deposits and arrival times of air shower particles. LOPES is a small radio antenna array to operate in conjunction with KASCADE-Grande in order to calibrate the radio emission from cosmic ray air showers.
