Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract

Use of new 3-strap ICRF antennas with all-tungsten (W) limiters in ASDEX Upgrade results in a reduction of the W sources at the antenna limiters and of the W content in the confined plasma by at least a factor of 2 compared to the W-limiter 2-strap antennas used in the past. The reduction is observed with a broad range of plasma shapes. In multiple locations of antenna frame, the limiter W source has a minimum when RF image currents are decreased by cancellation of the RF current contributions of the central and the outer straps. In JET with ITER-like wall, ITER-like antenna produces about 20% less of main chamber radiation and of W content compared to the old A2 antennas. However the effect of the A2 antennas on W content is scattered depending on which antennas are powered. Experiments in JET with trace nitrogen (N2) injection show that a presence of active ICRF antenna close to the midplane injection valve has little effect on the core N content, both in dipole and in -90° phasing. This indicates that the effect of ICRF on impurity transport across the scape-off-layer is small in JET compared to the dominant effect on impurity sources leading to increased impurity levels during ICRF operation. Abstract

The ITER-like ICRF antenna for JET aims at validating novel antenna design principles in conditions as relevant as possible to ITER by coupling about 7.2 MW to an ELMy H-mode plasma on JET in the frequency range from 30 to 55 MHz. The power density, about 8 MW/m 2 , for a given maximum voltage in the circuit is maximized using poloidally short straps and the resilience to fast varying RF loads by matching pairs of straps by a so-called conjugate-T. The paper reports the main characteristics of the final design as well as the main challenges encountered during the design and testing phase of the key components.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

The mission of WEST (tungsten-W Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) is to explore long pulse operation in a full tungsten (W) environment for preparing next-step fusion devices (ITER and DEMO) with a focus on testing the ITER actively cooled W divertor in tokamak conditions. Following the successful completion of phase 1 (2016-2021), phase 2 started in December 2022 with the lower divertor made entirely of actively cooled ITER-grade tungsten mono-blocks. A boronization prior the first plasma attempt allowed for a smooth startup with the new divertor. Despite the reduced operating window due to tungsten, rapid progress has been made in long pulse operation, resulting in discharges with a pulse length of 100 s and an injected energy of around 300 MJ per discharge. Plasma startup studies were carried out with equatorial boron nitride limiters to compare them with tungsten limiters, while Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating assisted startup was attempted. High fluence operation in attached regime, which was the main thrust of the first campaigns, already showed the progressive build up of deposits and appearance of dust, impacting the plasma operation as the plasma fluence increased. In total, the cumulated injected energy during the first campaigns reached 43 GJ and the cumulated plasma time exceeded 5 h. Demonstration of controlled X-Point Radiator regime is also reported, opening a promising route for investigating plasma exhaust and plasma-wall interaction issues in more detached regime. This paper summarises the lessons learned from the manufacturing and the first operation of the ITER-grade divertor, describing the progress achieved in optimising operation in a full W environment with a focus on long pulse operation and plasma wall interaction.

Abstract

In the framework of the Ion Cyclotron (IC) antenna design, ITER Organization requested qualification tests on sliding Radio-Frequency (RF) contacts, to verify that these contacts (quality class 1) are designed appropriately to guarantee a sufficient operational life time. These RF contacts will be integrated into the antenna structure at different locations to facilitate the assembly and decouple the different mechanical parts. This design will in addition lower the thermo-mechanical constraints and allow radial shimming of the antenna front face. As commercial contacts were not suitable for the ITER ICRH antenna operation, substantial efforts have been made on mechanical design of the new RF contact. Two prototypes have been manufactured and delivered to CEA for testing. In parallel a test stand facility (TITAN) has been refurbished to provide a way to test these RF contacts in relevant conditions (2.25kA @ 62.5MHz, vacuum pressure

Abstract

This year TORE-SUPRA celebrated its 25 years of operation. During this long time a number of technologies have been developed [1]. First of all it was mandatory to develop reliable superconducting magnets at ∼ - 4 K, with superfluid helium as efficient coolant. For the production of steady state discharge, 3 types of Radio Frequency (RF) additional heating systems have been developed: Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD), Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) and Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) [2]. To cope with long lasting discharges (up to 380 s × 2.8 MW) and large RF additional heating power (12.3 MW × 3 s), Actively Cooled (AC) Plasma Facing Components (PFC) were deployed in TORE-SUPRA for the first time in a Tokamak environment. TORE-SUPRA is now being modified into an axisymmetric tokamak with actively cooled tungsten main chamber walls and a divertor, the WEST project (W - for tungsten - Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) [3]. This new facility has the objective to offer ITER a test bed for validating the relevant actively cooled metallic technologies in D-shape H-mode plasmas. In contrast to other metallic devices such as JET and ASDEX, WEST will rely only on RF additional power systems. A set of plasma scenarios have been identified, ranging from a high total RF power scenario up to 15 MW during 30 seconds, to a high fluence scenario of 1000 seconds with up to 10 MW of injected RF power. These scenarios are able to reproduce ITER relevant conditions of steady state heat loads of 10 to 20 MW/m, to test tungsten actively cooled divertor technologies with relevant power heat fluxes and particle fluence. The paper presents the main issues regarding WEST project and especially the additional RF power injection systems (2 LHCD antennas, 3 + 4 = 7 MW continuous wave and 3 ICRH antennas, 3 × 3 = 9 MW-30 s or 3 MW-1000 s) for WEST. The front face of the LHCD antennas will be modified to account for the different plasma position and smaller toroidal field ripple, due to the more inward antenna position in the vessel. No other modifications are needed on the Passive-Active Multijunction (PAM) or the Fully-Active Multijunction (FAM) LHCD antennas, or the associated generator (2 × 8 klystrons, 600 kW each CW). Concerning the ICRH system, the main challenges are its ELM-resilience, its compatibility with continuous operation, and the interaction of the RF near fields with neighbouring plasma facing components. 3 new actively cooled antennas are being designed to be matched with an ELMs resilient electric circuit. The proposed solution is based on the JET-EP antenna and CEA prototype tested in 2007, both having identical internal conjugate-T electrical layout and a demonstrated load resilience capacity to plasma edge transients during ELMs. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract

In the past years, one of the focal points of the JET experimental programme was on ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) studies in view of the design and exploitation of the ICRH system being developed for ITER. In this brief review, some of the main achievements obtained in JET in this field during the last 5 years will be summarized. The results reported here include important aspects of a more engineering nature, such as (i) the appropriate design of the RF feeding circuits for optimal load resilient operation and (ii) the test of a compact high-power density antenna array, as well as RF physics oriented studies aiming at refining the numerical models used for predicting the performance of the ICRH system in ITER. The latter include (i) experiments designed for improving the modelling of the antenna coupling resistance under various plasma conditions and (ii) the assessment of the heating performance of ICRH scenarios to be used in the non-active operation phase of ITER. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

Edge radial electric fields were induced in the edge of the TEXTOR tokamak by means of a polarization electrode in order to study their influence on the plasma edge profiles and its confinement. The studies include the generation of H-mode behaviour with either positive or negative polarity. Particle confinement (τp) of deuterium and of impurity ions as well as energy confinement (τE) are investigated. For positive fields which remain below the threshold for the L-H transition, an interesting regime of reduced particle confinement without noticeable energy confinement loss is found. A strong asymmetry in the edge density profiles with respect to the electric field sign is observed at these low polarization voltages. Above the threshold, H-mode behaviour with increased energy confinement and especially particle confinement can be produced with either polarity of the applied electric field. It is, however, found that, whereas the energy confinement in positive H-modes is at least as good as that in negative ones, the ratio τp/τE is about three times lower in the former case

Abstract

The JET-EP antenna is designed to verify the design principles of that proposed for ITER, in relevant plasma conditions. It is intended to launch 7.2 MW of RF power to the plasma of the JET machine during its 'Enhanced Performance' program, at a power density of around 8 MW/m/sup 2/. The antenna comprises two poloidal current straps, each subdivided into four electrically short straps complete with in-vessel capacitors. The antenna is supported via a cantilever support box to the external support structure. This plug-in, through-port type assembly is clamped to the vacuum vessel externally. The antenna itself is fitted remotely. External rails and bellows allow radial positioning of the assembly. Eight capacitors are situated just behind the short antenna current straps. Plug-in replacement of the capacitors is performed through the vacuum vessel port.

Abstract

Whereas the essential components for power generation and transmission on an ITER-sized ICRF plant are readily available, or only require modest extrapolation of present day ICRF systems, the IC launching structure itself is regarded as needing development, validation and convincing demonstration. During the ITER-EDA, the design requirements of the Next Step device have resulted in increasingly higher values for this power density, going from less than 1 MW/m2 with the launcher integrated in the blanket, to presently about 10 MW/m2 for the present ITER, where the launcher is required to fit inside an equatorial port. The presently proposed JET-Enhanced Performance project ITER-like ICRF launcher, due for installation during the 2004 shutdown, mainly features a high power density of about 8 MW/m2 at a relevant coupling of 4 Ohm/m and 1C heating scenarios at frequencies from 30 to 55 MHz for pulses up to 20 seconds with a tolerance to load variations due to ELMs.

Abstract

The travelling wave array (TWA) antenna has been proposed as a promising alternative for ion cyclotron resonant heating in future fusion reactors. In this study, the possibility to make a TWA compatible with a tungsten environment like the WEST tokamak is assessed. For this purpose, two aspects of the antenna are investigated: the power spectrum and the near fields excited by the antenna. The sensitivity of these parameters to load and capacitor layout variations is taken into account while satisfying a proper antenna frequency response. The sensitivity of the power spectrum to frequency variation is also investigated to allow the possibility of fast feedback of the power deposition into the core plasma of WEST. The high resilience of the TWA to these variations is demonstrated and the main parameters of the TWA expected in WEST are compared to a current WEST antenna for the same loading. Possible optimizations of the TWA antenna are discussed. The present study is fully transferable to a fusion reactor like DEMO or ARC.

This paper documents the analysis of the ITER ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRF) launcher using the TOPICA code, throughout recent years’ design activities. The ability to simulate the detailed geometry of an ICRF antenna in front of a realistic plasma and to obtain the antenna input parameters, the electric currents on conductors and the radiated field distribution next to the antenna is of significant importance to evaluate and predict the overall system performances. Starting from a reference geometry, we first investigated the impact of some geometrical and numerical factors, such as the Faraday Screen geometry or the mesh quality. Then a final geometry was the object of a comprehensive analysis, varying the working frequency, the plasma conditions and the poloidal and toroidal phasings between the feeding lines. The performance of the antenna has been documented in terms of input parameters, power coupled to plasma and electric fields. Eventually, the four-port junction has also been included in TOPICA models.

Abstract

Waves in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) enhance local Plasma-Surface Interactions (PSI) near the wave launchers and magnetically-connected objects via Radio-Frequency (RF) sheath rectification. ITER will use 20MW of ICRF power over long pulses, questioning the long-term impact of RF-enhanced localized erosion on the lifetime of its Beryllium (Be) wall. Recent dedicated ICRF-heated L-mode discharges documented this process on JET for different types of ICRF antennas. Using visible spectroscopy in JET ICRF-heated L-mode discharges, poloidally-localized regions of enhanced (by ∼2–4x) Be I and Be II light emission were observed on two outboard limiters magnetically connected to the bottom of the active ITER-Like Antenna (ILA). The observed RF-PSI induced by the ILA was qualitatively comparable to that induced by the JET standard, type-A2 antennas, for similar strap toroidal phasing and connection geometries. The Be II line emission was found more intense when powering the bottom half of the ILA rather than its top half. Conversely, more pronounced SOL density modifications were observed with only top array operation, on field lines connected to the top half of the ILA. So far the near-field modeling of the ILA with antenna code TOPICA (Torino Polytechnic Ion Cyclotron Antenna), using curved antenna model, was partially able to reproduce qualitatively the observed phenomena. A quantitative discrepancy persisted between the observed Be source amplification and the calculated, corresponding increases in E// field at the magnetically connected locations to the ILA when changing from only top to only bottom half antenna operation. This paper revisits these current drive phased and half-ILA powered cases using for the new simulations flat model of the ILA and more realistic antenna feeding to calculate the E// field maps with TOPICA code. Further, the Self-consistent Sheaths and Waves for Ion Cyclotron Heating Slow Wave (SSWICH-SW) code, which couples slow wave evanescence with DC Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) biasing, is used to estimate the poloidal distribution of rectified RF-sheath Direct Current (DC) potential VDC in the private SOL between the ILA poloidal limiters. The approach so far was limited to correlating the observed, enhanced emission regions at the remote limiters to the antenna near-electric fields, as calculated by TOPICA. The present approach includes also a model for the rectification of these near-fields in the private SOL of the ILA. With the improved approach, when comparing only top and only bottom half antenna feeding, we obtained good qualitative correlation between all experimental measurements and the calculated local variations in the E// field and VDC potential.

Abstract

Four new low field side antennae grouped in pairs have been installed on TEXTOR. It is found that the interaction with the wall (density rise, impurity generation) is significantly reduced when operating each pair out of phase ( pi ) as opposed to in phase (0). The beneficial effect in the pi configuration is obtained without drop in plasma loading. This experimental property is shown, from theory, to be explained by the judicious choice of the geometrical configuration. A further improvement in the wall interaction is made possible by an appropriate choice of wall conditioning (wall carbonization with liner at 400 degrees C or, above all, boronization). As a result record low values of Prad/Ptotal were achieved during ICRH. The large reduction in wall interaction during ICRH allows routine long pulse (>1 s) ICRH operation at the maximum power level available ( equivalent to 2.5 MW).

Abstract

A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. The degree of the fractional derivative of the heat flux, α, is defined through the power balance analysis of the steady state. The model was used to obtain the experimental values of α for a large database of the Joint European Torus (JET) carbon-wall as well as ITER like-wall plasmas. Abstract

A novel technique for sawteeth control in tokamak plasmas using ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) has been developed in the JET-ILW tokamak. Unlike previous ICRH methods, that explored the destabilization of the internal kink mode when the radio-frequency (RF) wave absorption was placed near the q  =  1 surface, the technique presented here consists of stabilizing the sawteeth as fast as possible by applying the ICRH power centrally and subsequently induce a sawtooth crash by switching it off at the appropriate instant. The validation of this method in JET-ILW L-mode discharges, including preliminary tests in H-mode plasmas, is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
