Abstract

The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

Abstract

A new search for decays of heavy isosinglet neutrinos produced by neutral-current neutrino interactions in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam has been conducted by the CHARM-II Collaboration. We searched for heavy neutrinos created by scattering muon neutrinos on nucleons and decaying into μ + μ − ν μ . Production and decay of heavy neutrinos would appear as double events in the detector. Each double event candidate was tested wheather the measured quantities are compatible with the kinematics of this process. No event passed this test. The analysis is based on 2 × 10 7 neutral-current neutrino events collected from 1987–1991. The experiment is sensitive to heavy neutrinos in the mass range 0.3–2.4 GeV/ c 2 . The best limit for the mixing parameter is | U μi | 2 −5 for a mass around 2 GeV/ c 2 . The analysis improve order of magnitude previous results derived from wide-band neutrino beam exposures of the CHARM detector.

Abstract

There is today widespread use of plastic scintillating fibers in particle physics, mainly for calorimetric and tracking applications. In the case of calorimeters, we have to cope with very massive detectors and a large quantity of scintillating fibers. The CHORUS Collaboration has built a new detector to search for νμ-ντ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. A crucial task of the detector is ruled by the high-energy resolution calorimeter. For its construction more than 400000 scintillating plastic fibers have been used. In this paper we report on the design and performance of a new instrument for the high-statistics measurement of the fiber properties, in terms of light yield and light attenuation length. The instrument has been successfully used to test about 3% of the total number of fibers before the construction of the calorimeter.

Abstract

We report new constraints on the existence of additional Z bosons derived from neutrino-electron scattering data. The analysis is based on data taken by the CHARM II Collaboration during five years of exposure of the detector to the wide band neutrino beam at CERN. The limits on the mass of these new particles are evaluated in the framework of E 6 superstring-inspired theories and Left-Right symmetric models. Limits on the so-called Z 1 are also reported.

Abstract

The large scale use of scintillating optical fibers in particle detectors is now starting, with the advent of lead-scintillating fiber calorimeters and their use in physics experiments. With respect to the use of scintillating fibers for the tracking of particle trajectories close to the interacting point, in this application we face very massive detectors and a very large quantity of scintillating fibers. On the other hand, their diameter does not need to be particularly small, as in the case of particle tracking when a good space resolution is required. The CHORUS Collaboration is presently building a new detector for the search of νμ − ντ oscillations on the CERN neutrino beam. A crucial task in the detector is ruled by the high energy resolution calorimeter. For its construction more than 400 000 scintillating plastic fibers have been used. Here we report on the characteristics and performance of a new instrument for high statistics measurement of the fiber properties in terms of light output and attenuation length of the light.

Abstract

The fine granularity of the CHARM-II detector has been exploited to search, in the CERN-SPS wide band neutrino beam, for quasi-elastic ντ interactions followed by the decay τ → πντ. Since the sampling thickness of the target calorimeter corresponds to ∼ 1 9 of an interaction length, these events appear in the detector as a single track followed by a hadronic shower. The study of the “single pion” events is used to set limits on the νμ → ντ oscillation parameters. The maximum sensitivity to the mixing angle θ is reached for Δm2 = 50 eV2 allowing to exclude values of sin22θ greater than 6.4 × 10−3 at 90% CL.

Abstract

CHORUS is an experiment searching for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a hybrid setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for nu(tau) charged current interactions where the tau lepton decays to mu(mu)nu(tau). In a sample of 31,423 nu(mu) charged current interactions, no nu(tau) candidates were found. For large Delta m(mu tau)(2) values, a limit on the mixing angle of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 3.5 x 10(-3) at 90% C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result. The Chorus experiment, which aims at a search for v(mu) --> v(tau) oscillations using the neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS, has successfully taken data in 1994 and 1995. The detection technique will be discussed and the performances of the apparatus as well as a status report will be given.

Abstract

We are reporting the first experimental result of the coupling of the muon neutrino with the Z. This result is in good agreement with the average value of the coupling of the three neutrino families as derived from the invisible decay width of the Z. We also determined gντ assuming Nν=3.

Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for ν μ → ν τ oscillation, has been successlly constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract

We built and tested on charged particle beams the high energy-resolution calorimeter for the CHORUS experiment, which searches for νμ-ντ oscillations in the CERN Wide Band Neutrino Beam. This calorimeter is longitudinally divided into three sectors: one electromagnetic and two hadronic. The first two upstream sectors are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers in the volume ratio of 4 1 , and they represent the first large scale application of this technique for combined electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry. The third sector is made of a sandwich of lead plates and scintillator strips and complements the measurement of the hadronic energy flow. In this paper, we briefly describe the calorimeter design and we show results on its response to electrons and pions, obtained from tests performed at the CERN SPS and PS. An energy resolution of σ(E)/E=(32.3±2.4)%/ E(GeV) + (1.4±0.7)% was achieved for pions, and σ(E)/E=(13.8±0.9)%/ E(GeV) + (−0.2±0.4)% for electrons.

Abstract

In the framework of the CHORUS experiment for the search of v μ ↔ v τ oscillations at CERN, we have built the high resolution calorimeter, intended for the measurement of the energy of hadronic showers produced in neutrino interactions. The calorimeter consists of three parts. The first two are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers in the volume ratio 4 : 1, such as to achieve compensation. The third is a sandwich of lead plates and scintillator strips in the same volume ratio. The techniques used for the construction of the calorimeter are described, as well as its performance in shower and muon detection. We used electron, pion and muon beams in the energy range 2–100 GeV for this purpose.

We report our final results from the analysis of the full high statistics sample of events of the reaction \imd\,\, collected with the \CHARMII{} detector in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam during the years 1988 to~1991. From a signal of 15,758 \pm 324 inverse muon decay events we derived, in the Born approximation, a value of (16.51 \pm 0.93) \times 10^{-42} \unit{cm}^2 \unit{GeV}^{-1} for the asymptotic cross section slope \sigma/E_\nu, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 17.23 \times 10^{-42} \unit{cm}^2 \unit{GeV}^{-1}. The result constrains the scalar coupling of the electron and the muon to |\gLL{S}|^2 < 0.475\ \rm{at}\ 90\%\ \rm{CL}.

Abstract

A high resolution calorimeter has been built for CHORUS, an experiment which searches for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation in the CERN neutrino beam. Aim of the calorimeter is to measure the energy and direction of hadronic showers produced in interactions of the neutrinos in a nuclear emulsion target and to track through-going muons. It is a longitudinally segmented sampling device made of lead and scintillating fibers or strips. This detector has been exposed to beams of pions and electrons of defined momentum for calibration. The method used for energy calibration and results on the calorimeter performance are reported.

Abstract

We report new bounds on electromagnetic properties of the muon neutrino obtained from a study of neutrino-electron scattering. The results are based on the analysis of differential cross section data collected with the CHARM II detector. The 90% C.L. limit on the magnetic moment of the muon-neutrino mu(nu mu) < 3 . 10(-9) mu(B) confirms limits obtained at much lower energies. The limit on the anomalous charge radius of the muon neutrino \[r(2)]anom\ < 6.0 . 10(-33) cm(2) improves earlier results by nearly a factor three.

Abstract

The construction of modules and the assembly of the calorimeter for CHORUS, an experiment that searches for nu(mu) nu(tau) oscillation, have been completed. Within the experiment, the calorimeter is required to measure the energy of hadronic showers produced in neutrino interactions with a resolution of similar to 30%/root E(GeV). To achieve this performance, the technique, developed in recent years, of embedding scintillating fibers of 1 mm diameter into a lead matrix has been adopted for the most upstream part of the calorimeter. A more conventional system, of alternating layers of lead and scintillator strips, was used for the rest. Details of module construction as well as results obtained when modules were exposed to electron and muon beams are presented.

Abstract

The CHORUS Collaboration is presently building a new detector for the search of ν μ - ν τ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam, the experiment being sensitive to a mixing angle an order of magnitude smaller than the present limit. The basic components of the CHORUS “hybrid” detector are an active target made of nuclear emulsions, an air core spectrometer with scintillating fiber tracking, a high resolution calorimeter and a muon spectrometer. An account is given here of the design of the 110-tons compensating calorimeter, made of 1 mm diameter scintillating fibers embedded in a lead matrix, and of the test results from the first modules produced.

Abstract

A search for upsilon(mu) --> upsilon(e) and ($) over bar upsilon(mu) --> ($) over bar upsilon(e) oscillations has been carried out with the CHARM LI detector exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino beam. The data were collected over five years, alternating beams mainly composed of muon-neutrinos and muon-antineutrinos. The number of interactions of upsilon(e) and ($) over bar upsilon(e) observed is comparable with the number of events expected from flux calculations. For large squared mass differences the upper limits obtained on the mixing angle are sin(2)2 theta < 9.4.10(-3) for upsilon(mu) oscillating to upsilon(e) and sin(2)2 theta < 4.8.10(-3) for ($) over bar upsilon(mu) to ($) over bar upsilon(e) at the 90% confidence level. Combining neutrino and antineutrino data the upper limit is 5.6.10(-3).

Abstract

A b s t r a c t We report final results on electroweak parameters from muon-neutrino electron scattering o b s e r v e d in the C H A R M II detector from 1987 till 1991. In total 2677 + 82 and 2752 ± 88 neutrino-electron scattering events have been d e t e c t e d in the v and ~ - b e a m , respectively. From the ratio o f differential cross sections we obtain for the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 ®,,, = 0.2324 4- 0.0083. From the absolute neutrino-electron scattering event rate w e d e t e r m i n e d the effective vector and axial-vector neutral current coupling constants to be g~," = - 0 . 0 3 5 4- 0.017 and g~" = - 0 . 5 0 3 -~ 0.017.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of coherent single charged pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering. The analysis is based on data taken with the CHARM II detector in beams of muon-neutrinos and -antineutrinos. The event numbers amount to N(μ−π) = 748 and N(μ+π) = 631. Cross sections and their dependence on the neutrino energy are determined. The results are in agreement with the predictions of models based on the PCAC hypothesis.

Abstract

We report on a study of the differential cross section dσ/dy for the processes of elastic νμ- and ν μ - electron scattering. The data on which this analysis is based were recorded between 1987 and 1990 with the CHARM II detector in the wide band neutrino beam at the CERN-SPS. For the first time the shapes of these y-distributions have been determined in a model-independent way. A fit to the data yields for the squares of the neutral coupling constants the ratio gR2/gL2=0.60 ± 0.19 (stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.).

Abstract

We report on the design and performance of the lead-scintillating fiber calorimeter of the CHORUS experiment, which searches for νμ-ντ oscillations in the CERN Wide Band Neutrino beam. Two of the three sectors in which the calorimeter is divided are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers, and they represent the first large scale application of this technique for combined electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry. The third sector is built using the sandwich technique with lead plates and scintillator strips and acts as a tail catcher for the hadronic energy flow. From tests performed at the CERN SPS and PS an energy resolution of σ ( E ) / E = ( 32.3 ± 2.4 ) % / E ( GeV ) + ( 1.4 ± 0.7 ) % was measured for pions, and σ ( E ) / E = ( 13.8 ± 0.9 ) % / E ( GeV ) + ( − 0.2 ± 0.4 ) % for electrons.

Abstract

The results of a leading-order QCD analysis of neutrino-induced charm production are presented. They are based on a sample of 4111 $\nu_\mu$ - and 871 $\bar \nu_\mu$ -induced opposite-sign dimuon events with $E_{\mu 1},E_{\mu 2} > 6{\rm GeV}$ , $35 < E_{\nu} < 290{\rm GeV}$ and $Q^2> 5.5\,{\rm GeV^2}$ , observed in the CHARM II detector exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. The analysis yields the value of the charm quark mass $m_c=1.79\pm0.38\,{\rm GeV}/c^2$ and the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cd}|=0.219\pm0.016$ . The strange quark content of the nucleon is found to be suppressed with respect to non-strange sea quarks by a factor $\kappa =0.39\pm0.09$ .
