Deep-water snapper fisheries in the Mariana Archipelago are important commercial, recreational and subsistence fisheries. Pristipomoides zonatus, one of the top four deep-water snapper species harvested in Guam, lacked life-history information. To fill this gap, a comprehensive life-history assessment for P. zonatus, which included age, growth, mortality and reproduction, was conducted in Guam. The size range of P. zonatus sampled for life history was from 11.5 cm to 40.4 cm (fork length), with ages ranging from 0.5 to 30 years. Von Bertalanffy growth model-combined sex parameters were L∞ = 36.91 cm and K = 0.29. Males obtained a larger average size and a larger asymptotic size (+3.03 cm) than did females. Pristipomoides zonatus matures at a small size and age (L50 ≤ 24.0 cm and A50 ≤ 2.1 years) relative to their maximum size (40.4 cm) and age (30 years). Additionally, P. zonatus has a long spawning season and a short spawning interval, suggesting high reproductive output. Our results expand knowledge on Pristipomoides life history (fast early growth, moderately long-lived, high productivity), providing the necessary information for the management of P. zonatus in Guam.

The DUSP22-IRF4 gene rearrangement results in downregulation of DUSP22, a presumed tumor suppressor in T-cell lymphomagenesis. It has been described in some cases of primary cutaneous and systemic anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, lymphomatoid papulosis, and transformed mycosis fungoides. Here we describe two patients with clinical lesions resembling patch/plaque mycosis fungoides that did not meet WHO criteria for large-cell transformation on histopathology yet showed a DUSP22 translocation. One patient who had a history of systemic anaplastic large-cell lymphoma with DUSP22 translocation presented with cutaneous involvement by his systemic lymphoma along with lymphomatoid papulosis and mycosis-fungoides-like lesions, all showing an identical immunophenotype and T-cell clone. These cases expand the spectrum of DUSP22-rearranged lymphomas to include mycosis-fungoides-like presentations without large-cell transformation.

Methylated DNA adenines (6mA) are an important epigenetic modification in bacteria that affect varied cell processes like replication, stress response, and pathogenesis. While much work has been done characterizing the influence of 6mA on specific loci, very few studies have examined the evolutionary dynamics of 6mA over long time scales. Utilizing third-generation sequencing technology, we produced a detailed analysis of 6mA methylation across theEscherichia coliK-12 substr. MG1655 genome. 6mA levels were consistently high across GATC sites; however, we identified regions where 6mA is decreased, particularly in intergenic regions, especially around the -35 promoter element, and within cryptic prophages and IS elements. We further examined 6mA in WT and methyl-directed mismatch repair-knockout (MMR-) populations after 2400 generations of experimental evolution. We find that, after evolution, MMR-populations acquire significantly more epimutations resulting in a genome-wide decrease in 6mA methylation. Here, clones from evolved MMR-populations display non-deterministic sets of epimutations, consistent with reduced selection on these modifications. Thus, we show that characterization of 6mA in bacterial populations is complementary to genetic sequencing and informative for molecular evolution.

Sunlight induces actinic keratosis, skin cancers and photoaging. Photoprotection is thus a major issue in public health to prevent the harmful effects of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiations. Recent data have shown that the visible (VIS) and infrared (IR) radiations can lead to skin damage by oxidative stress, suggesting that a balanced protection across the entire spectrum of sunlight is necessary to prevent cutaneous alterations. In this context, we developed a new generation of sunfilter called Phenylene Bis-Diphenyltriazine or TriAsorB (CAS N°55514-22-2). The aim of the present study was to assess the photoprotective efficacy of TriAsorB from UV to IR light. Spectrophotometric assays were performed to measure absorption and reflectance of TriAsorB in the different spectral ranges of sunlight: UV, VIS including blue light or high energy visible (HEV) and IR. DNA damage was evaluated using reconstructed human epidermis (RHE): 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG) in response to HEV exposure, pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and (6-4) photoproducts following solar-simulated radiation (SSR). TriAsorB is a broad spectrum UVB + UVA filter including long UVA. Interestingly, it also absorbs VIS radiations, especially in the HEV region. These radiations are also reflected. Protection in the IR spectral range is weak. Furthermore, the sunfilter specifically protects the skin against the oxidative lesions 8OHdG induced by HEV and prevents SSR-induced DNA damage. Thus, TriAsorB is an innovative sunfilter that might be used in sun care products for skin photoprotection from UV to VIS radiations. Finally, it prevents sunlight genotoxicity and protected the skin against solar radiations, especially blue light.

Follicle center lymphomas, including primary cutaneous follicle center lymphoma, may rarely show plasmacytic differentiation. Such cases can pose a diagnostic challenge and can be mistaken for other lymphomas that more commonly include plasma cells. Here, we report four cases of PCFCL and one case of systemic follicular lymphoma involving the skin with associated monotypic plasma cells, including the clinical, morphologic and immunophenotypic features. Colorful sexual traits are shaped by the opposing pressures of natural and sexual selection. Although increased conspicuousness improves mating success, an individual bearing brighter sexual traits may pay direct costs in terms of detectability to predators. While it is well established that the mere presence of non-aposematic, conspicuous sexual traits influences predation risk, little empirical work has examined how within-sex variability in sexual trait coloration affects attack rates; of these studies, results are equivocal. We experimentally tested the hypothesis that, within a single sex, brighter sexually selected traits impose a greater survival risk. We created clay models resembling male water anoles (Anolis aquaticus) and manipulated the coloration (bright red vs. brown-orange) of their colorful sexual ornament, the dewlap. Models were placed and monitored within A. aquaticus habitat. Our results suggest that a more conspicuous dewlap coloration is a cause of increased attack: redder models were attacked more than twice as often as less red models. Although previous studies have found correlational relationships between conspicuous coloration and predation, or have demonstrated long-term evolutionary changes in sexual dichromatism caused by a change in predator regime, our results show direct, within-lifetime costs of conspicuous sexual coloration among individuals of the same sex. These findings correspond well with a contemporary understanding of the drivers of female choice for costly male traits. These results also suggest the need for additional study on the effects of predation on the evolution of intrasexual variation in colorful sexual traits.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) has become increasingly popular in the evaluation of lymph nodes for lymphoproliferative disorders, but there are limitations to accurate subclassification of lymphoma using morphology alone. This case aims to expand diagnostic considerations of large B-cell populations identified on FNA material. We also address the significance of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in the workup of patients with suspected lymphoma by FNA.

In 2017, Cosmetics Europe performed a double‐blinded ring test of 24 emulsion‐type sunscreen products, across 3 in vivo test laboratories and 3 in vitro test laboratories, using a new candidate in vitro SPF test method. Based on the results of this work, an article was published showing how data derived from a new lead candidate method conform to new International Standards (ISO) acceptance criteria for alternative SPF test methods (Any alternative method should consider the matrix effect and if required, specify the matrix applicability of the method; Criterion 1a: Systematic differences between methods should be negligible: 95% of all individual results of an alternative method are within the range of ±2× reproducibility standard deviation of the in vivo method, that is overall bias must be below 0.5× reproducibility standard deviation of the in vivo method; Criterion 1b: Measurement uncertainty of an alternative method should be below the measurement uncertainty of the in vivo method. Candidate method predicted values must fall within the full ‘funnel’ (SPF 6‐50+) limits proposed by Cosmetics Europe (derived from the same minimum test design, that is using the ISO24444 Method to measure at least 24 products across at least 3 laboratories using at least 5 test subjects/laboratory, in a blinded fashion).). Of the 24 sunscreen products tested, the majority of emulsions were of the oil‐in‐water (O/W) type, whereas only one was water‐in‐oil (W/O) and there were no products with a mineral‐only sun filter system. In order to confirm the scope of this method, therefore, a new study was conducted that included 73 W/O (12 mineral + organic, 44 mineral only and 17 organic only) and 3 O/W mineral‐only, emulsion‐type sunscreen products (a total of 76 new sunscreen products). When combined with the previous 24 products (tested in 3 different laboratories), this yielded a new data set comprising a total of 100 emulsion‐type sunscreen products, with SPF values ranging from 6 to 50+ (with a total of 148 data points). These products were tested using the double‐plate in vitro SPF test method and compared with the ISO TC217/WG7 acceptance criteria for alternative SPF test methods. Over 95% of paired in vitro: in vivo SPF values lay within the upper and lower limits of the ISO acceptance criteria funnel, with no bias. This new in vitro SPF test method, therefore, meets the minimum requirements for an alternative SPF test method to ISO24444:2010, for emulsion‐type sunscreen products (which make up the majority of marketed sunscreen products)., Over 95% of paired in vitro: in vivo SPF values lay with in the upper and lower limits of the ISO acceptance criteria funnel, with no bias. This new in vitro SPF test method, therefore, meets the minimum requirements for an alternative SPF test method to ISO24444:2010, for emulsion‐type sunscreen products.

Titanium-based contacts are envisioned for the integration of III–V device contacts on a 300-mm platform, such as photodetectors, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), and III–V silicon hybrid lasers. For the first time, the impact of the thermal budgets of process integration, back-end of line (BEOL), and long-term thermal stress on the electrical characteristics of the Ti/p-In0.53Ga0.47As and Ti/n-InP contacts has been investigated. Additional physical characterizations have been used to supplement the electrical properties on both systems. Results have indicated that, given a thermal budget between 350 °C and 450 °C during 60 s right after metal deposition, 1) Ti as a contact metal has led to contact resistivity in low $10^{-{5}}\,\,\Omega \cdot \text {cm}^{{2}}$ for p-contacts and in mid $10^{-{5}}\,\,\Omega \cdot \text {cm}^{{2}}$ for n-contacts, which is in accordance with the device requirements; and 2) process integration, BEOL, and long-term thermal stress will not induce any change of the electrical properties. In the scope of III–V silicon hybrid laser contact integration, Ti has hence been evidenced as a suitable candidate for both p- and n-contacts.

How microbes adapt to a novel environment is a central question in evolutionary biology. Although adaptive evolution must be fueled by beneficial mutations, whether higher mutation rates facilitate the rate of adaptive evolution remains unclear. To address this question, we cultured Escherichia coli hypermutating populations, in which a defective methyl-directed mismatch repair pathway causes a 140-fold increase in single-nucleotide mutation rates. In parallel with wild-type E. coli, populations were cultured in tubes containing Luria-Bertani broth, a complex medium known to promote the evolution of subpopulation structure. After 900 days of evolution, in three transfer schemes with different population-size bottlenecks, hypermutators always exhibited similar levels of improved fitness as controls. Fluctuation tests revealed that the mutation rates of hypermutator lines converged evolutionarily on those of wild-type populations, which may have contributed to the absence of fitness differences. Further genome-sequence analysis revealed that, although hypermutator populations have higher rates of genomic evolution, this largely reflects strong genetic linkage. Despite these linkage effects, the evolved population exhibits parallelism in fixed mutations, including those potentially related to biofilm formation, transcription regulation, and mutation-rate evolution. Together, these results are generally inconsistent with a hypothesized positive relationship between the mutation rate and the adaptive speed of evolution, and provide insight into how clonal adaptation occurs in novel environments.

To answer this question, we evolved E. coli populations with different starting mutation rates in a complex medium for 900 days and then examined their fitness and genome profiles. In the populations that have a higher starting mutation rate, despite faster genome evolution, their fitness improvement is not significantly faster. Our results reveal that the effect of elevated mutation rates is only very limited, and the mutations accumulated in hypermutators are largely due to linkage effect.

In order to assess their potential use as contact layers for Si photonics devices, Ni 2 P thin films were developed on a 300 mm platform. Ni 2 P layers, obtained by magnetron sputtering of a Ni 2 P target, were implemented and integrated on III-V-based structures to extract the contact resistivity on n-InP and p-InGaAs. Due to its high thermal stability and low contact resistivities, Ni 2 P metallization exhibited the best results among the Ni-based metallizations studied for contacting n-InP layers.

Background Acute leukemia with mixed-phenotype blasts is associated with poor outcomes. There are no standard treatment regimens. Due to disease heterogeneity, controversy exists over whether an AML-based, ALL-based, or a combined (hybrid) AML/ALL-based regimen is most appropriate. Materials and Methods We conducted a single-center, retrospective case series review of patients with acute leukemia with mixed phenotype blasts as described by the European Group for Immunological Characterization of Leukemia (EGIL) or the 2008 WHO classification. Patients were treated from November 2014 and December 2019 with the combination chemotherapy regimen FLAG-idarubicin-vincristine-prednisone with or without rituximab. Outcomes included induction response, time to transplant, time to relapse, overall survival, time to neutrophil or platelet recovery, infection, and duration of hospitalization. Results The median age was 68 years (range 21−77). Six patients (87.5 %) had unfavorable/complex cytogenetics. All patients achieved a complete remission (CR) or complete remission with incomplete hematologic recovery (CRi). Estimated 1-year overall survival was 85.7 %. There were no deaths during induction, with a 22 day median duration of hospitalization for induction. Conclusion The combination of FLAG, idarubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (FLAG-VIPR) demonstrated favorable induction responses in a disease state with historically poor outcomes and should be studied in a prospective clinical trial.

Background Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) seropositivity has been associated with higher inflammation during rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, no data are available on the impact of HCMV seropositivity on bone erosion progression during RA. Methods We selected 487 individuals of ESPOIR cohort who fulfilled the 2010 ACR/EULAR criteria for RA. HCMV serology for these patients was determined using Architect CMV IgG assay. Baseline and 1-year central X-ray reading using modified Total Sharp Score (mTSS), Erosion Sharp Score, and joint space narrowing Sharp score were used to quantify structural damage progression. We performed univariate and multivariate analyses to investigate the association between HCMV status and bone erosion progression. Results We analyzed 273 HCMV seropositive (HCMV+) and 214 HCMV seronegative (HCMV−) RA patients. At inclusion, HCMV+ patients were less frequently ACPA+ (49.8% versus 58.9%, p p 1 point) was lower in HCMV+ patients (16.1% versus 25.2%, p = 0.0128) in comparison with HCMV−. HCMV+ status remained independently associated with lower bone erosion progression in multivariate analysis. Conclusions Our findings suggest that, independently of other confounding factors, HCMV seropositivity is associated with a lower progression of bone erosion during RA.

Nickel-based metallization are envisioned for the p-contact integration of III-V / silicon hybrid lasers on a 300 mm platform. The electrical and physical characteristics of Ni 0.9 Pt 0.1 and Ni thin films on In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As layers have been studied. For the first time, the impact of the thermal budget of the process integration and laser operations on the contact integrity have been investigated. Results have shown that in the case of the Ni 0.9 Pt 0.1 / p-In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As system, with a rapid thermal annealing between 350 and 450 °C for 60 s applied after metal deposition, promising contact resistivities have been extracted (low 10–5 - high 10–6 Ω.cm2) along with a good electrical stability after process integration and laser operations. The Ni / p-In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As system have exhibited lower contact resistivities (low 10–6 - high 10–7 Ω.cm2) granted a rapid thermal annealing between 400 and 500 °C after metal deposition. A strong electrical stability after integration steps and laser operations has also been evidenced. Results suggest that the Ni / p-In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As system constitutes the most promising option for p-contact integration.

The development of Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible contact technology on III–V materials based on Ti for electronics or photonics applications was studied. In this framework, solid-state reactions between Ti thin films (20 nm) and In0.53Ga0.47As layers grown on InP substrates were studied from the as-deposited state up to 550 °C using a combination of advanced X-ray diffraction (in-plane reciprocal space mapping), Auger electron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses. The phase formation sequence was solved. At low temperature, an amorphous Ti–Ga–As intermixing layer coexists with the Ti film. As of 250 °C, the first crystalline phase to form is Ti 2 Ga 3 . At 300 °C, a new crystalline phase appears, namely TiAs 2 . On the other hand, TiAs and metallic In form at 350 °C and Ti is completely consumed between 450 and 500 °C. The diffusion of the various species lead to the formation of a non-nominal Ga-rich In x Ga 1−x As layer and at 550 °C to the formation of polycrystalline GaAs. Ti was found to be the main diffusing species at low temperature whereas III and V elements are the dominant diffusing species at higher temperatures. The nature of the phases formed above and below the original Ti/InGaAs interface might explain the In accumulation at the interface, the TiAs phase acting as a diffusion barrier.

International audience; Increased osteoclastogenesis is a common feature of bone erosion, notably in osteoporosis but also in inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarticular infections. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection has been described to impair monocyte differentiation into macrophages and dendritic cells. However, its effect on monocyte-derived osteoclasts is yet to be determined. We showed here that in vitro HCMV infection is associated with an inhibition of osteoclastogenesis through decreased expression of colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF-1R) and RANK in monocytes, which was mediated by an upregulation of quaking I-5 protein (QKI-5), a cellular RNA-interacting protein. We found that deliberate QKI5 overexpression in the absence of HCMV infection is able to decrease CSF-1R and RANK expression, leading to osteoclastogenesis inhibition. Finally, by using lentiviral vectors in a calvarial bone erosion mouse model, we showed that QKI5 inhibits bone degradation. This work identifies QKI5 as a strong inhibitor of bone resorption. Future research will point out whether QKI5 could be a target for bone pathologies. © 2019 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research

Background/Introduction In France, the law defines and prohibits “unreasonable obstinacy” and provides a framework for the subsequent decision to limit or to cease treatment. It also gives the person the right to appoint a trusted person and to draft advance directives regarding this issue. There have been few studies of neurosurgeons’ involvement in decision-making in regard to treatment limitation after severe traumatic brain injury. Aim of the study The first aim of the study was to assess French neurosurgeons’ adherence to the law on patients’ rights and end of life which governs such decision-making. The second aim was to assess the prognostic and decision-making criteria applied by neurosurgeons. Methods A declarative practice and opinion survey, using a self-administered questionnaire emailed to all practising neurosurgeons members of the French Society of Neurosurgery, was conducted from April to June 2016. Results Of the 197 neurosurgeons contacted, 62 filled in the questionnaire. Discussions regarding treatment limitation were in all cases collegial, as required under the law, and the patient's neurosurgeon was always involved. The trusted person and/or family were always informed and consulted, but their opinions were not consistently taken into account. Advance directives were most often lacking (68%) [56; 80] or inappropriate (27%) [16; 38]. The most frequently used prognostic criteria were clinical parameters, intracranial pressure, cerebral perfusion pressure, and imaging, with significant interindividual variation in their use. The main decision-making criteria were foreseeable disability, expected future quality of life, and age. Conclusions Neurosurgeons showed good compliance with legal requirements, except in the matter of calling for the opinion of an external consultant. Furthermore, this survey confirmed variability in the use of prognosis predictors, and the need for further clinical research so as to achieve more-standardized practices to minimise the subjectivity in decision-making.

International audience; Using a metal-organic tungsten based precursor, a fluorine-free tungsten thin film has been obtained. The process deposition recipe includes a plasma-enhanced CVD (PECVD) step and atomic layer deposition (ALD) cycles. A set of physicochemical characterizations including X-ray reflectivity (XRR), in-plane X-ray diffraction (XRD), wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), plasma profiling time of flight mass spectrometry (PPTOFMS) and microscope observations has been realized in order to study the W thin film structure and properties. The film is perfectly conformal whatever the structure size investigated (from tens of nanometers to micrometers wide). It was also highlighted that the F-free W film exhibits the lowest electrical resistivity phase (α-W) but is not pure. Indeed, in addition to a top surface oxidation, a layer located at the W film / substrate interface is present. This interface layer (IL) contains impurities, including carbon and oxygen, due to ligand decomposition. This IL might be deposited during the soak step or during the PECVD step. The W liner with thicknesses ranging from 3 to 4 nm has been implemented on PCRAM structures in order to evaluate its impact on contact plug resistivity. First electrical results are promising and demonstrate the interest of using a F-free low resistance W liner. At the aspect ratio studied, the gain in terms of contact plug resistivity is about 20% compared to the process of reference using a TiN liner. Modeling shows that this benefit is mainly due to the reduction of interface resistances.

Many species use color change to optimize body coloration to changing environmental conditions, and drivers of rapid color change in natural populations are numerous and poorly understood. We examined factors influencing body coloration in the Water Anole (Anolis aquaticus Taylor, 1956), a lizard possessing color-changing stripes along the length of its body. We quantified the color of three body regions (the eye stripe, lateral stripe, and dorsum) before and after exposure to a mild stressor (handling and restraint). Based on current understanding of the genus Anolis Daudin, 1802, we hypothesized that exposure to a stressor would generate genus-typical skin darkening (i.e., increased melanism). Contrary to expectations, stress consistently brightened body coloration: eye and lateral stripes transitioned from brown to pale blue and green and the dorsum became lighter brown. Sex, size, and body temperature did not correlate with any aspect of body coloration, and a laboratory experiment confirmed that light exposure did not drive brightening. We propose that color change may serve to reduce conspicuousness through disruptive camouflage; lizards tended to display brighter stripes on mottled green–brown substrates. Together, these results improve our understanding of Anolis color change diversity and emphasize the need for a broader interpretation of the mechanism and functions of color change across taxa.

Tracker group of the CMS collaboration: et al., A new CMS tracker detector will be installed for operation at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). This detector comprises modules with two closely spaced parallel sensor plates and front-end ASICs capable of transmitting tracking information to the CMS Level-1 (L1) trigger at the 40 MHz beam crossing rate. The inclusion of tracking information in the L1 trigger decision will be essential for selecting events of interest efficiently at the HL-LHC. The CMS Binary Chip (CBC) has been designed to read out and correlate hits from pairs of tracker sensors, forming so-called track stubs. For the first time, a prototype irradiated module and a full-sized module, both equipped with the version 2 of the CBC, have been operated in test beam facilities. The efficiency of the stub finding logic of the modules for various angles of incidence has been studied. The ability of the modules to reject tracks with transverse momentum less than 2 GeV has been demonstrated. For modules built with irradiated sensors, no significant drop in the stub finding performance has been observed. Establishing reliable frameworks for predicting unknown outcomes from empirical observations is of great interest to ecologists and evolutionary biologists. Strong predictability in evolutionary responses has been previously demonstrated by the repeated observation of similar phenotypes or genotypes across multiple natural or experimental populations in analogous environments. However, the degree to which evolutionary outcomes can be predicted across environmental gradients, or in fluctuating environments, remains largely unexplored. Presumably, the phenotypic evolution in an intermediate environment could be interpolated from the evolved phenotypes observed in two extreme environments, but this assumption remains to be fully tested. Here, we report on the experimental evolution ofEscherichia coliunder three nutritional transfer periods: every day, every 10 days, and every 100 days, representing increasing severity in feast/famine cycles. After 900 days of experimental evolution, populations experiencing intermediate durations of starvation had evolved longer times to reach maximum growth rate, smaller colony sizes, higher biofilm formation, and higher mutation rates than populations evolving in the other environmental extremes. Because the intermediately starved populations exhibit significantly high molecular parallelism, these distinct phenotypes are likely due to non-monotonic deterministic forces instead of increased stochastic forces commonly associated with fluctuating environments. Our results demonstrate novel complexities associated with evolutionary predictability across environmental gradients and highlight the risk of using interpolation in evolutionary biology.

Paper-based platforms for biological studies have received significant attention given that cellulose is ubiquitous, biocompatible, and can be readily organized into tunable fibrous structures. In the latter form, effect of complexity in surface morphologies (roughness, porosity and fiber organization) on cell-substrate interaction has not been thoroughly explored. We infer that altering the properties of a fibrous material should lead to significant changes in cellular microenvironment and direct the deposition of structurally analogous extracellular matrix (fiber-fiber templating) like collagen. Here, we elucidate the effect of varying paper roughness and surface chemistry on NIH/3T3 fibroblasts via organization of excreted collagen. Collagen intensity was found to increase linearly with paper porosity, indicating a 3D culture platform. The intensity, however, decays over time due to biodegradation of the substrate. Stability can be improved by introducing fluorinated alkyl silanes to yield hydrophobic paper. This process concomitantly transforms the substrate to a 2D-like scaffold where collagen is predominantly assembled on the surface, thus changing the cellular microenvironment. Altering surface energy also led to fluctuations in collagen intensity and organization over time for smooth (calendered) paper substrates. We infer that the increased roughness improves collagen adsorption through capillary driven petal effect. In general, the influence of the substrate simultaneously affects its ability to host collagen and guide orientation. These findings offer insights into the effects of secondary structures and chemistry of fibrous polymeric materials on cell culture, which we propose as vital parameters when using paper-based platforms.

Electrical properties of CMOS-compatible titanium contacts on n-InP and p-In0.53Ga0.47As using 300 mm tools, in the scope of integrating them on III-V / Si hybrid lasers, are presented. Electrical behaviors after i) processing, ii) integration and back-end sequences, and iii) several simulated laser uses were investigated.

In the scope of integrating III–V device contacts on a 300 mm platform, Ni-based contacts are envisioned. In this regard, the Pt redistribution in the Ni0.9Pt0.1/InP system, and the impact of Pt-alloying of Ni thin films on InP over solid-state reaction and layer morphology have been investigated. Results have shown that at low temperature (T 300 °C), the presence of Pt partially slows down the diffusion of Ni towards the InP substrate, which as a result delays the growth of an intermixing amorphous Ni–In–P layer. In addition, the presence of Pt in the system has delayed the consumption of the Ni0.9Pt0.1 layer. At higher temperatures (T ≥ 300 °C), the thermal energy brought to the system overcomes the Pt-induced partially slowed down Ni diffusion, and the observed phase formation sequence indicates that the Ni-based crystallized phases (Ni 2 P, Ni 3 P and Ni 2 InP) are identified regardless of the presence of Pt, which is not incorporated into the formed Ni-based phases (Ni 2 P, Ni 3 P and Ni 2 InP). Instead, the latter is rejected from the forming interface, which allows it to participate to the formation of the stable Pt 3 In 7 crystallized phase.
