Abstract

In dit onderzoek analyseren we de invloed van wettelijke restricties op de investeringsgroei van individuele bedrijven. Met behulp van een unieke database, gebaseerd op interviews met een grote groep bedrijven uit verschillende landen, gaan we na in welke mate investeringen worden beperkt door wetgeving. Ook onderzoeken we of het investeringsgedrag van grote en kleine bedrijven op dezelfde wijze wordt beïnvloed. Onze resultaten ondersteunen de hypothese dat de groei van de investeringen wordt beperkt door wetten die door ondernemingen als negatief worden ervaren. Tevens blijkt dat met name kleine bedrijven last ondervinden van wettelijke restricties. Grote bedrijven lijken beter in staat restricties te omzeilen. Een belangrijke les voor het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven is dat wettelijke restricties het internationale zakendoen niet hoeven te blokkeren.

2. A High Precision 3D Magnetic Field Scanner for Small to Medium Size Magnets

Abstract

A bench to measure the magnetic field of small-to-medium-sized magnets with high precision was built. It uses a small-sized head with three orthogonal Hall probes, supported on a long pole at continuous movement during measurement. The head is calibrated in three dimensions by rotation over the full solid angle in a special device. From 0 to 2.5 T, the precision is ±0.2 mT in all components. The spatial range is 1 × 1 × 2 m with precision of ±0.02 mm. The bench and its controls are lightweight and easy to transport. The head can penetrate through small apertures and measure as close as 0.5 mm from the surface of a magnet. The bench can scan complicated grids in Cartesian or cylindrical coordinates, steered by a simple text file on an accompanying PC. The raw data is online converted to magnetic units and stored in a text file.

Abstract

Background Reduced prepulse inhibition (PPI) of startle provides evidence of deficient sensorimotor gating in several disorders, including schizophrenia. The role of NMDA neurotransmission in the regulation of PPI is unclear, due to cross-species differences in the effects of NMDA antagonists on PPI. Recent reports suggest that drug effects on PPI differ in subgroups of normal humans that differ in levels of baseline PPI or specific personality domains; here, we tested the effects of these variables on the sensitivity of PPI to the NMDA antagonist, memantine. Methods PPI was measured in male Sprague-Dawley rats, after treatment with memantine (0, 10 or 20 mg/kg, sc). Baseline PPI was then measured in 37 healthy adult men. Next, subjects were tested twice, in a double-blind crossover design, comparing either: 1) placebo vs. 20 mg of the NMDA antagonist memantine (n=19), or 2) placebo vs. 30 mg memantine (n=18). Tests included measures of acoustic startle amplitude, PPI, autonomic indices and subjective self-rating scales. Results Memantine had dose- and interval-dependent effects on PPI in rats: compared to vehicle, 10 mg/kg increased short-interval (10-20 ms) PPI, and 20 mg/kg decreased long-interval (120 ms) PPI. In humans, memantine caused dose-dependent effects on psychological and somatic measures: 20 mg was associated with increased ratings of happiness, and 30 mg was associated with increased ratings of dizziness. PPI at the 120 ms prepulse interval was increased by 20 mg but not 30 mg of memantine. Subgroups most sensitive to the PPI-enhancing effects of memantine were those with low baseline PPI, or with personality scale scores suggestive of high novelty seeking, high sensation seeking, or high disinhibition. Conclusion NMDA blockade with memantine appears to have dose- and interval-dependent effects on sensorimotor gating in rats and humans, particularly among specific subgroups of normal human subjects. These findings are discussed as they relate to consistencies across other studies in humans, as well as apparent inconsistencies in the NMDA regulation of PPI across species.

The magnetic spectrometer of the CERN experiment NA48 uses a conventional dipole magnet with a gap of 2.40 m and a field integral of 0.83 Tm, equivalent to a transverse momentum change of charged particles of 250 MeV/ c . This paper introduces the magnet and compares three-dimensional calculations of the magnetic field with the measured field map.

Abstract

ATLAS is a general purpose detector designed to explore a wide range of physics at the Large Hadron Collider. At the centre of ATLAS is a tracking detector in a 2 T solenoidal magnetic field. This paper describes the machine built to map the field, the data analysis methods, the final results, and their estimated uncertainties. The remotely controlled mapping machine used pneumatic motors with feedback from optical encoders to scan an array of Hall probes over the field volume and log data at more than 20 000 points in a few hours. The data were analysed, making full use of the physical constraints on the field and of our knowledge of the solenoid coil geometry. After a series of small corrections derived from the data itself, the resulting maps were fitted with a function obeying Maxwell's equations. The fit residuals had an r.m.s. less than 0.5 mT and the systematic error on the measurement of track sagitta due to the field uncertainty was estimated to be in the range 0.02 % to 0.12 % depending on the track rapidity.

10. First fully CMOS-integrated 3D hall probe

Abstract

We present the first fully CMOS-integrated 3D Hall probe. The microsystem is developed for precise magnetic field measurements in the range from mT up to tens of tesla in the frequency range from DC to 30 kHz and with a spatial resolution of about 150 /spl mu/m. The microsystem is realized in a conventional CMOS process without any additional processing step and can be manufactured at very low cost. With the electronics circuit applying the so-called spinning-current technique to the Hall sensor block, we obtain low noise (a resolution better than 100 /spl mu/T) and low cross talk between the channels (less than 0.2% between the channels up to 2 T). The single chip configuration insures a precision of the orthogonality between the measurement axes better than 0.5/spl deg/. A temperature sensor based on a band-gap cell is integrated directly on the chip, which allows a good temperature drift compensation of the system.

Abstract

ATLAS is a general-purpose detector at the 14 TeV proton-proton Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The muon spectrometer will operate in the magnetic field provided by a large, eight-coil barrel toroid magnet bracketed by two smaller toroidal end-caps. The toroidal field is non-uniform, with an average value of about 0.5 T in the barrel region, and is monitored using three-dimensional Hall sensors which must be accurate to ∼ 1 mT . The barrel coils were installed in the cavern from 2004 to 2006, and recently powered up to their nominal current. The Hall-sensor measurements are compared with calculations to validate the magnetic models, and used to reconstruct the position and shape of the coil windings. Field perturbations by the magnetic materials surrounding the muon spectrometer are found in reasonable agreement with finite-element magnetic-field simulations.

Abstract

This paper describes a dedicated device to map the magnetic field of the T2K near detector (ND280) magnet, which runs at a nominal field value of 0.2 T, with an accuracy of the order of a Gauss. A high accuracy mapping is a key ingredient in order to provide the required momentum accuracy in the ND280 time projection chambers (TPCs) allowing T2K to measure precisely the PMNS matrix parameters m(23)(2) and (23). This paper describes the design and realization of the device as well as its performance during operation. The reported results show that the aimed at goals are reached.

Abstract

We report on the hexagonally shaped toroidal air-core magnet used in the magnetic spectrometer of the CHORUS experiment at CERN. The novel and unique features of this magnet are the radially-constant field over its entire volume, with field lines straight and parallel to the hexagonal sides, and the negligibly small field-free region along its central axis. A detailed description of its construction and performance is given.

Abstract

ATLAS is a general-purpose detector designed to explore a wide range of particle physics topics at the Large Hadron Collider. A crucial component to the success of ATLAS will be a precise knowledge of the magnetic field produced by the ATLAS solenoid. To achieve this, a special field mapping machine was built and deployed to measure the solenoid magnetic field. This paper describes the mapping machine, the field mapping campaign, and the subsequent analysis of the field map data. After a series of small corrections, some taken from surveys and some derived from the data itself, were applied to the recorded data, the corrected data were fitted with a function obeying Maxwell's equations. The resulting field residuals had an rms of less than 0.5 mT, and the systematic error on the measurement of track sagitta due to the field uncetainty was estimated to range fom 2-12 × 10-4, depending on the tack rapidity

Abstract

New measurements of the total crosssections of charged-current interactions of muonneutrinos and antineutrinos on isoscalar nuclei have been performed. Data were recorded in an exposure of the CHARM detector in an 160 GeV narrow-band beam. The antineutrino flux was determined from the measurements of the pion and kaon flux, and independently from the muon flux measured in the shield; the two methods are found to agree. The neutrino flux was determined from the muon flux ratio forv μ and $$\bar v_\mu $$ runs which was normalized to the antineutrino flux. The cross-section slopes thus determined are $$\begin{gathered} \sigma _T^{\bar v} /E = (0.335 \pm 0.004(stat) \hfill \\ \pm 0.010(syst)).10^{ - 38} cm^2 /(GeV \cdot nucleon) \hfill \\ \sigma _T^v /E = (0.686 \pm 0.002(stat) \hfill \\ \pm 0.020(syst)).10^{ - 38} cm^2 /(GeV \cdot nucleon) \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ The momentum sum of the quarks in the nucleon and the ratio of sea quark to total quark momentum are derived from the measurements.

Abstract

The CHARM II Collaboration is building a massive, fine-grained and low-density detector for the study of neutrino-electron scattering. Its target calorimeter consists of 441 detector planes with 155 232 plastic streamer tubes with digital readout of the wires and analog readout of external pickup strips. At the time of this report, about 25% of the calorimeter planes were equipped with electronics. Results on the performance of these tubes are presented as obtained with cosmic-rays and with electron and pion beams. We have also investigated the use of water vapour as an additive to the gas to suppress coating of the anode wires. The use of water would be of particular importance when using the tubes in a high-rate environment.

Abstract

Differential cross sections dσ/dy have been measured in semileptonic neutral- and charged-current reactions induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos. The comparison of the neutral- and the charged-current differential cross sections allows the direct determination of the chiral coupling of the neutral ( v v ) current to left- and right-handed quarks. The result, with a value of gR2 = 0.042±0.010, is the first direct determination, with a significance of more than four standard deviations, of a non-zero value of gR.

Abstract

We present data of the reaction νμe−→μ−νe, the inverse of muon decay, collected in a long exposure of the CH ARM neutrino detector to the CERN SPS hornfocussed wide band neutrino beam. After corrections for efficiencies, a sample of 594 ± 56(syst.) ± 22(syst.) events has been found. The ratio of the measured and expected cross sections is 0.98 ± 0.12 assuming pure V - A interaction. In an SU (2)L × SU (2)R × U (1) model containing two charged intermediate vector bosons, one can relate this ratio to the ratio of the masses of the two vector bosons and to their mixing angle ω. From the result of this experiment, the limits M(W2)/M(W1) ⩾ 1.9 and ω ⩽ 15° at 90% cl can be derived. A search for the reaction ν μ e − →μ − ν e , allowed by multiplicative lepton number conservation, gave a limit of σ ( ν μ e − →μ − ν e /σ(ν μ e − →μ − ν e ) , at 90% confidence level.

The fine-grain and low-density neutrino calorimeter of the CHARM Collaboration has been designed to measure the energy and the direction of particle showers. Data are presented on the trigger efficiency and results of a new energy calibration of the upgraded detector using electrons and pions from 5 to 140 GeV/c, and on the angular and spatial resolution.

Abstract

The probabilities ${P}_{\mathrm{KK}}$ of double-$K$-shell-vacancy production per $K$-electron-capture decay of $^{181}\mathrm{W}$ and $^{165}\mathrm{Er}$ have been determined by means of $K\ensuremath{\alpha}$ x-ray\char22{}$K$ x-ray coincidence experiments: ${P}_{\mathrm{KK}}=(2.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ and ${P}_{\mathrm{KK}}=(8.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.8)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$, respectively. The observed energy shifts of the hypersatellite $\mathrm{Ta}K{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{1}^{H}$ x-ray and $\mathrm{Ho}K{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{1}^{H}$ x-ray lines are 1026\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}62 eV and 930\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}70 eV, respectively. In the case of $^{181}\mathrm{W}$, the theoretical ${P}_{\mathrm{KK}}$ value deviates significantly from the above-mentioned experimental value. In combination with results from other experiments, this strongly suggests that, contrary to what the present theory predicts, ${P}_{\mathrm{KK}}$ shows a considerable dependence on the ratio of transition energy to threshold energy.

Abstract

The ratio R of muon neutrino-electron and antineutrino-electron cross sections has been determined based on a sample of 46 ± 12 neutrino events and 77 ± 19 antineutrino events obtained in the CHARM fine-grain calorimeter using the CERN Super Proton Synchroton horn-focused wide-band beams. The experimental result is R=1.37−0.44+0.65, corresponding to a value of sin2θW=0.215±0.040. The systematic error of sin2θW is estimated to be ±0.015.

Abstract

The morphology of zinc electrodeposited from acidic solutions containing nitrate ions was studied as part of a research project entitled “Regeneration of Bright Chromating Baths”. It has been found that in the presence of nitrate ions the usual sequence:sponge, compact, dendritic deposit, as a function of increasing current density, is disturbed so that in almost all cases, spongy deposits are obtained, independent of the cd and hydrodynamic conditions. Possible causes of this phenomenon are discussed.
