Groundwater pollution by chlorinated compounds is one of the most common environmental issues affecting urban areas, especially for those with a huge industrial vocation. Even if Rome is not an industrial city, this kind of contamination has been recently started to be detected in the groundwater. In order to better evaluate the presence and distribution of chlorinated solvents in groundwater in the eastern sector of Rome, a sampling survey in the monitoring network of the city has been conducted. First preliminary results, deriving from samples collected in wells mainly located in public green areas in a previous investigation survey, seem to show how the species tetrachloroethylene, trichlorethylene and all their degradation pathway can be associated more with point source of contamination with locally very high concentration values. On the contrary, the detection of trichloromethane and 1,1,2-trichloroethane, which have been found in the new data collection at low concentration in several of the investigated wells, could suggest a diffuse occurrence of these compounds. Unfortunately, even if the presented results represent a good starting point for further evaluations, the preliminary status of this research cannot allow to clearly understand the source of contamination and declare the possible diffusion of these two compounds.

In this study, several hydrogeological catchments of Central Italy have been characterized focusing the attention on the presence of areas in which, over the last two decades, the hydrological equilibrium between recharge and discharge (phenomena of marked reduction of spring discharge and progressive drawdown of groundwater levels) has been compromised by overexploitation of groundwater resources. A GIS system has been used in order to develop the study and the homogenous distribution of the hydrological knowledge and of the existing imbalances has been performed. Characterizing elements of the research are: a) the definition of the hydrogeological units; b) the hydrogeological survey of around a thousand water-points; c) the monthly analysis of climatic data of numerous survey stations; d) the census and the recording of water concessions; e) the evaluation of agriculture hydro-exigency derived from the analysis of the use of soil; f) the withdrawals defined by a statistic analysis of data. These elements have allowed to define the Distributed Hydrogeological Budget which is a useful instrument to evaluate critical areas.

This paper describes the contents of the new Hydrogeological Map of the City of Rome (1:50,000 scale). The map extends to the entire municipality (1285 km2) and is based on both the most recent scientific studies on the groundwater field and new survey activities carried out in order to fill the data gaps in several areas of the examined territory. The map is the result of a combination of different urban groundwater expertise and Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping performed using the most recent available data and has been produced with the intention of furnishing the City of Rome with the most recent and updated information regarding groundwater.

Chemical, physical, and biological features of streams and ground water of the North-Eastern area of Rome are jointly analyzed in order to assess the status of water resources. Ground water was investigated with classical survey methods (pH, temperature, and electric conductivity). Microbiological pollution, faunal composition, and stream surrounding area conditions of surface waters were studied, in order to quantify the residual value of these ecosystems from both a human and an environmental point of view. Results show a general impairment of the system and the comparison between superficial waters and shallow ground waters makes it possible to detect the presence of a connection between the two levels. This relationship occurs as an exchange from superficial waters (streams and rivers) to the shallow aquifers. Where superficial waters are contaminated, as in the Tor Sapienza stream, pollutants move to the shallow aquifers too, due to the decreased pressure of the over-exploited aquifer. Moreover, uncontrolled drilling activity, diffused in urban areas, makes it possible the connection between shallow and deep ground water. Notwithstanding this, the mixing between superficial and deep ground water system in Rome is not very widespread and, apparently, limited to restricted areas.

Within the framework of the activities aimed at studying current and future exploitation and the related sustainability of geothermal resources, the Working Group IDROGEOTER was set-up within the IAH Italian Chapter. The first activity of IDROGEOTER's workplan is the analysis of state of the art in current use of low-to high enthalpy geothermal resources in Italy. Detailed studies supporting the possible optimization of the use of geothermal resources, carried out in different areas are described in the paper, with details regarding the Veneto Region (NE Italy). Further studies and inventory of data and applications will be part of the activities of IDROGEOTER, which will also include the preparation of a proposal of guidelines for hydro-geothermal studies.
