We present a method for the additive fabrication of planar magnetic nanoarrays with minimal surface roughness. Synthesis is accomplished by combining electron-beam lithography, used to generate nanometric patterned masks, with ion implantation in thin films. By implanting $^{56}$Fe$^{+}$ ions, we are able to introduce magnetic functionality in a controlled manner into continuous Pd thin films, achieving 3D spatial resolution down to a few tens of nanometers. The interaction between surface acoustic waves and magnetization offers an efficient route for electrically controlling magnetic states. Here, we demonstrate the excitation of magnetoacoustic waves in galfenol, a highly magnetostrictive alloy made of iron (72%) and gallium (28%). We quantify the amplitude of the induced magnetization oscillations using magnetic imaging in an X-ray photoelectron microscope and estimate the dynamic magnetoelastic constants through micromagnetic simulations. Our findings demonstrate the potential of galfenol for magnonic applications and reveal that, despite strong magnetoelastic coupling, magnetic interactions and spin-wave dispersion relations significantly influence the overall amplitude of magnetoacoustic waves., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We present a study on the static magnetic properties of individual $\text{GaAs}$-$\text{Fe}_{\text{33}}\text{Co}_{\text{67}}$ core-shell nanorods. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism combined with Photoemission Electron Microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) and Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) were used to investigate the magnetic nanostructures. The magnetic layer is purposely designed to establish a magnetic easy axis neither along a high symmetry nor mirror axes to promote 3D magnetic helical order on the curved surface. In practice, two types of magnetic textures with in-plane magnetization were found inside the nanostructures' facets: magnetic domains with almost longitudinal or almost perpendicular magnetization with respect to the axis of the tube. We observe that a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the long axis of the nanostructure can add an azimuthal component of the magnetization to the previously almost longitudinal magnetization.

Topological defects, or singularities, play a key role in the statics and dynamics of complex systems. In magnetism, Bloch point singularities represent point defects that mediate the nucleation of textures such as skyrmions and hopfions. However, while the textures are typically stabilised in chiral magnets, the influence of chirality on the Bloch point singularities remains relatively unexplored. Here we harness advanced three-dimensional nanofabrication to explore the influence of chirality on Bloch point singularities by introducing curvature-induced symmetry breaking in a ferromagnetic nanowire. Combining X-ray magnetic microscopy with the application of in situ magnetic fields, we demonstrate that Bloch point singularity-containing domain walls are stabilised in straight regions of the sample, and determine that curvature can be used to tune the energy landscape of the Bloch points. Not only are we able to pattern pinning points but, by controlling the gradient of curvature, we define asymmetric potential wells to realise a robust Bloch point shift-register with non-reciprocal behaviour. These insights into the influence of symmetry and chirality on singularities offers a route to the controlled nucleation and propagation of topological textures, providing opportunities for logic and computing devices.

The study investigates the manipulation of the magnetic anisotropy in a thick (1 $\mu$m) Ni$_{90}$Fe$_{10}$ layer electrodeposited on a ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$(001) substrate, using a combination of Magneto-optical Kerr Effect, Photoemission Electron Microscopy with X-ray circular magnetic dichroism and X-ray diffraction. In the as-grown state, the system shows weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and characteristic stripe domains. Upon out-of-plane electrical poling of the BaTiO$_3$ substrate, the magnetic anisotropy switches to in-plane with a strong uniaxial behavior. This change is ascribed to the magnetoelastic effect due to the switching of the BaTiO$_3$ ferroelectric [001] axis into the sample plane, as evidenced by XRD. The strong mechanical interaction with the thick Ni$_{90}$Fe$_{10}$ overlayer prevents the full inversion of the substrate. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be recovered by a mild thermal annealing above the BaTiO$_3$ tetrahedral to cubic phase transition and can be cycled by repeated electrical poling/thermal annealing. We use surface acoustic waves of 1 and 3 GHz in hybrid piezoelectric-magnetic systems with either cobalt or nickel as a magnetic layer to generate magnetoacoustic waves and directly image them using stroboscopic X-ray magnetic circular dichroism imaging. Our measurements visualize and quantify the amplitudes of both acoustic and magnetic components of the magnetoacoustic waves, which are generated in the ferromagnetic layer and can propagate over millimeter distances. Additionally, we quantifiedy the magnetoelastic strain component for cobalt and nickel through micromagnetic simulations. We obtained a drop in the magnetoacoustic signal at 3 GHz suggesting a speed limit for the efficient magnetoelastic coupling in our hybrid devices., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We have grown high-quality magnetite micrometric islands on ruthenium stripes on sapphire through a combination of magnetron sputtering (Ru film), high-temperature molecular beam epitaxy (oxide islands), and optical lithography. The samples have been characterized by atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism in a photoemission microscope. The magnetic domains on the magnetite islands can be modified by the application of current pulses through the Ru stripes in combination with magnetic fields. The modification of the magnetic domains is explained by the Oersted field generated by the electrical current flowing through the stripes underneath the magnetite nanostructures. The fabrication method is applicable to a wide variety of rock salt and spinel oxides.

We show that it is possible to tune the N\'eel temperature of nickel(II)-cobalt(II) oxide films by changing the Ni to Co ratio. We grow single crystalline micrometric triangular islands with tens of nanometers thickness on a Ru(0001) substrate using high temperature oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Composition is controlled by adjusting the deposition rates of Co and Ni. The morphology, shape, crystal structure and composition are determined by low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction, and synchrotron-based x-ray absorption spectromicroscopy. The antiferromagnetic order is observed by x-ray magnetic linear dichroism. Antiferromagnetic domains up to micrometer width are observed.

Magnetoelastic effects in antiferromagnetic CuMnAs are investigated by applying dynamic strain in the 0.01% range through surface acoustic waves in the GaAs substrate. The magnetic state of the CuMnAs/GaAs is characterized by a multitude of submicron-sized domains which we image by x-ray magnetic linear dichroism combined with photoemission electron microscopy. Within the explored strain range, CuMnAs shows magnetoelastic effects in the form of N\'eel vector waves with micrometer wavelength, which corresponds to an averaged overall spin-axis rotation up to 2.4 deg driven by the time-dependent strain from the surface acoustic wave. Measurements at different temperatures indicate a reduction of the wave amplitude when lowering the temperature. However, no domain wall motion has been detected on the nanosecond timescale

Artificial spin ice (ASI) are nanomagnetic metamaterials exhibiting a wide range of emergent properties, which have recently shown promise for neuromorphic computing. However, the lack of efficient protocols to control the state evolution of these metamaterials has been limiting progress. To overcome this barrier, we introduce astroid clocking, a global field protocol offering discrete, gradual evolution of spin states. The method exploits the intrinsic switching astroids and dipolar interactions of the nanomagnets to selectively address ASI spins in sequence. We demonstrate, experimentally and in simulations, how astroid clocking of pinwheel ASI allows ferromagnetic domains to be gradually grown or reversed at will. More complex dynamics arise when the clock protocol allows both growth and reversal to occur simultaneously. Astroid clocking offers unprecedented control and understanding of ASI dynamics in both time and space, extending what is possible in nanomagnetic metamaterials.

We describe a setup that is used for high-frequency electrical sample excitation in a cathode lens electron microscope with the sample stage at high voltage as used in many synchrotron light sources. Electrical signals are transmitted by dedicated high-frequency components to the printed circuit board supporting the sample. Sub-miniature push-on connectors (SMP) are used to realize the connection in the ultra-high vacuum chamber, bypassing the standard feedthrough. A bandwidth up to 4 GHz with -6 dB attenuation was measured at the sample position, which allows to apply sub-nanosecond pulses. We describe different electronic sample excitation schemes and demonstrate a spatial resolution of 56 nm employing the new setup.

The ever-growing demand for device miniaturization and energy efficiency in data storage and computing technology has prompted a shift towards antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological spin textures as information carriers, owing to their negligible stray fields, leading to possible high device density and potentially ultrafast dynamics. We realize, in this work, such chiral in-plane (IP) topological antiferromagnetic spin textures, namely merons, antimerons, and bimerons in synthetic antiferromagnets by concurrently engineering the effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, the interlayer exchange coupling, and the magnetic compensation ratio. We demonstrate by three-dimensional vector imaging of the N\'eel order parameter, the topology of those spin textures and reveal globally a well-defined chirality, which is a crucial requirement for controlled current-induced dynamics. Our analysis reveals that the interplay between interlayer exchange and interlayer magnetic dipolar interactions plays a key role in significantly reducing the critical strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction required to stabilize topological spin textures, such as AFM merons, making synthetic antiferromagnets a promising platform for next-generation spintronics applications., Comment: 18pages, 5 figures

We study current-induced switching of the N\'eel vector in CoO/Pt bilayers to understand the underlaying antiferromagnetic switching mechanism. Surprisingly, we find that for ultra-thin CoO/Pt bilayers electrical pulses along the same path can lead to an increase or decrease of the spin Hall magnetoresistance signal, depending on the current density of the pulse. By comparing the results of these electrical measurements to XMLD-PEEM imaging of the antiferromagnetic domain structure before and after the application of current pulses, we reveal the reorientation of the N\'eel vector in ultra-thin CoO(4 nm). This allows us to determine that even opposite resistance changes can result from a thermomagnetoelastic switching mechanism. Importantly, our spatially resolved imaging shows that regions where the current pulses are applied and regions further away exhibit different switched spin structures, which can be explained by a spin-orbit torque based switching mechanism that can dominate in very thin films.

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) provide an efficient dynamical coupling between strain and magnetization in micro/nano-metric devices. Using a hybrid device composed of a piezoelectric, GaAs, and a ferromagnetic Heusler alloy thin film, Fe$_3$Si, we are able to quantify the amplitude of magnetoacoustic waves generated with SAWs via magnetic imaging in an X-ray photoelectron microscope. The cubic anisotropy of the sample together with a low damping coefficient allows for the observation of resonant and non-resonant magnetoelastic coupling. Additionally, via micromagnetic simulation, we verify the experimental behavior and quantify the magnetoelastic shear strain component in Fe$_3$Si that appears to be very large ($b_2=14\times 10^6$ J/m$^3$), much larger than the one found in Nickel., Comment: 7 pages

We demonstrate how the antiferromagnetic order in heterostructures of NiO/Pt thin films can be modified by optical pulses. We irradiate our samples with laser light and identify an optically induced creation of antiferromagnetic domains by imaging the created domain structure utilizing the X-ray magnetic linear dichroism effect. We study the effect of different laser polarizations on the domain formation and identify a polarization-independent creation of 180{\deg} domain walls and domains with 180{\deg} different N\'eel vector orientation. By varying the irradiation parameters, we determine the switching mechanism to be thermally induced and demonstrate the reversibility. We thus demonstrate experimentally the possibility to optically create antiferromagnetic domains, an important step towards future functionalization of all optical switching mechanisms in antiferromagnets.

We have monitored the Verwey transition in micrometer-wide, nanometer-thick magnetite islands on epitaxial Ru films on Al2O3(0001) using Raman spectroscopy. The islands have been grown by high-temperature oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Below 100 K and for thicknesses above 20 nm the Raman spectra correspond to those observed in bulk crystals and high quality thin films for the sub-Verwey magnetite structure. At room temperature the width of the cubic phase modes is similar to the best reported in bulk crystals, indicating a similar level of electron-phonon interaction. The evolution of the Raman spectra upon cooling suggests that for islands thicker than 20 nm, structural changes appear first at temperatures starting at 150 K and the Verwey transition itself takes place at around 115 K. However, islands thinner than 20 nm show a very different Raman spectra indicating that while a transition takes place, the charge order of the ultrathin islands differs markedly from their thicker counterparts, Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

A detailed correlative structural, magnetic and chemical analysis of non-stoichiometric cobalt ferrite micrometric crystals was performed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism combined with photoemission microscopy, low energy electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The vector magnetization at the nanoscale is obtained from magnetic images at different x-ray incidence angles and compared with micromagnetic simulations, revealing the presence of defects which pin the magnetic domain walls. A comparison of different types of defects and the domain walls location suggests that the main source of pinning in these microcrystals are linear structural defects induced in the spinel by the substrate steps underneath the islands., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers in non-volatile memory and logic devices. While room-temperature magnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation were recently demonstrated, the stray field resulting from their finite magnetization as well as their topological charge limit their minimum size and reliable motion in tracks. Antiferromagnetic (AF) skyrmions allow these limitations to be lifted owing to their vanishing magnetization and net zero topological charge, promising room-temperature, ultrasmall skyrmions, fast dynamics, and insensitivity to external magnetic fields. While room-temperature AF spin textures have been recently demonstrated, the observation and controlled nucleation of AF skyrmions operable at room temperature in industry-compatible synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) material systems is still lacking. Here we demonstrate that isolated skyrmions can be stabilized at zero field and room temperature in a fully compensated SAF. Using X-ray microscopy techniques, we are able to observe the skyrmions in the different SAF layers and demonstrate their antiparallel alignment. The results are substantiated by micromagnetic simulations and analytical models using experimental parameters, which confirm the chiral SAF skyrmion spin texture and allow the identification of the physical mechanisms that control the SAF skyrmion size and stability. We also demonstrate the local nucleation of SAF skyrmions via local current injection as well as ultrafast laser excitations at zero field. These results will enable the utilization of SAF skyrmions in skyrmion-based devices.

Antimonene -- a single layer of antimony atoms -- and its few layer forms are among the latest additions to the 2D mono-elemental materials family. Numerous predictions and experimental evidence of its remarkable properties including (opto)electronic, energetic or biomedical, among others, together with its robustness under ambient conditions, have attracted the attention of the scientific community. However, experimental evidence of its electrical properties is still lacking. Here, we characterized the electronic properties of mechanically exfoliated flakes of few-layer (FL) antimonene of different thicknesses (~ 2-40 nm) through photoemission electron microscopy, kelvin probe force microscopy and transport measurements, which allows us to estimate a sheet resistance of ~ 1200 $\Omega$sq$^{-1}$ and a mobility of ~ 150 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ in ambient conditions, independent of the flake thickness. Alternatively, our theoretical calculations indicate that topologically protected surface states (TPSS) should play a key role in the electronic properties of FL antimonene, which supports our experimental findings. We anticipate our work will trigger further experimental studies on TPSS in FL antimonene thanks to its simple structure and significant stability in ambient environments.

The spin Hall effect and its inverse are important spin-charge conversion mechanisms. The direct spin Hall effect induces a surface spin accumulation from a transverse charge current due to spin orbit coupling even in non-magnetic conductors. However, most detection schemes involve additional interfaces, leading to large scattering in reported data. Here we perform interface free x-ray spectroscopy measurements at the Cu L_{3,2} absorption edges of highly Bi-doped Cu (Cu_{95}Bi_{5}). The detected X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signal corresponds to an induced magnetic moment of (2.7 +/- 0.5) x 10-12 {\mu}_{B} A^{-1} cm^{2} per Cu atom averaged over the probing depth, which is of the same order as for Pt measured by magneto-optics. The results highlight the importance of interface free measurements to assess material parameters and the potential of CuBi for spin-charge conversion applications.

The antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition occurring above room temperature in FeRh is attracting interest for applications in spintronics, with perspectives for robust and untraceable data storage. Here, we show that FeRh films can be grown on a flexible metallic substrate (tape shaped), coated with a textured rock-salt MgO layer, suitable for large scale applications. The FeRh tape displays a sharp antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at about 90 oC. Its magnetic properties are preserved by bending (radii of 300 mm), and their anisotropic magnetoresistance (up to 0.05 %) is used to illustrate data writing/reading capability.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures holding great potential as nanoscale information carriers. Recently, skyrmions have been predicted in antiferromagnets, with key advantages in terms of stability, size, and dynamical properties over their ferromagnetic analogs. However, their experimental demonstration is still lacking. Here, we show the imprint from ferromagnetic skyrmions into a thin film of an IrMn antiferromagnet, at room temperature and zero external magnetic field, using exchange-bias. Using high-spatial-resolution x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM), we observed the imprinted spin textures within the IrMn from the XMCD signal of the uncompensated Mn spins at the interface with the ferromagnet. We demonstrate that effects of spin-orbit coupling and inversion asymmetry exist in a single GdFeCo ferrimagnetic layer, even without a heavy metal interface. We use electric transport measurements to quantify the spin-orbit torques. We measure the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction using Brillouin light scattering measurement technique, and we observe the resulting chiral magnetic textures using x-ray PEEM microscopy. We attribute these effects to a composition variation along the thickness, that we observed by scanning transmission electron microscopy. We show that these effects can be optimized by varying the GdFeCo thickness or by combining them with interfacial effects.

The recent discovery of magnetic van der Waals materials has triggered a wealth of investigations in materials science, and now offers genuinely new prospects for both fundamental and applied research. Although the catalogue of van der Waals ferromagnets is rapidly expanding, most of them have a Curie temperature below 300 K, a notable disadvantage for potential applications. Combining element-selective x-ray magnetic imaging and magnetic force microscopy, we resolve at room temperature the magnetic domains and domains walls in micron-sized flakes of the CrTe$_2$ van der Waals ferromagnet. Flux-closure magnetic patterns suggesting in-plane six-fold symmetry are observed. Upon annealing the material above its Curie point (315 K), the magnetic domains disappear. By cooling back down the sample, a different magnetic domain distribution is obtained, indicating material stability and lack of magnetic memory upon thermal cycling. The domain walls presumably have N\'eel texture, are preferentially oriented along directions separated by 120 degrees, and have a width of several tens of nanometers. Besides microscopic mapping of magnetic domains and domain walls, the coercivity of the material is found to be of a few mT only, showing that the CrTe$_2$ compound is magnetically soft. The coercivity is found to increase as the volume of the material decreases.

Reversible control of magnetization by electric fields without assistance from a subsidiary magnetic field or electric current could help reduce the power consumption in spintronic devices. When increasing temperature above room temperature, FeRh displays an uncommon antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition linked to a unit cell volume expansion. Thus, using the strain exerted by an adjacent piezoelectric layer, the relative amount of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic regions can be tuned by an electric field applied to the piezoelectric material. Indeed, large variations in the saturation magnetization have been observed when straining FeRh films grown on suitable piezoelectric substrates. In view of its applications, the variations in the remanent magnetization rather than those of the saturation magnetization are the most relevant. Here, we show that in the absence of any bias external magnetic field, permanent and reversible magnetization changes as high as 34% can be induced by an electric field, which remain after this has been zeroed. Strain engineering vanadium dioxide thin films is one way to alter this material's characteristic first order transition from semiconductor to metal. In this study we extend the exploitable strain regime by utilizing the very large lattice mismatch of 8.78 % occurring in the VO$_2$/RuO$_2$ system along the c axis of the rutile structure. We have grown VO$_2$ thin films on single domain RuO$_2$ islands of two distinct surface orientations by atomic oxygen-supported reactive MBE. These films were examined by spatially resolved photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, confirming the correct stoichiometry. Low energy electron diffraction then reveals the VO$_2$ films to grow indeed fully strained on RuO$_2$(110), exhibiting a previously unreported ($2\times2$) reconstruction. On TiO$_2$(110) substrates, we reproduce this reconstruction and attribute it to an oxygen-rich termination caused by the high oxygen chemical potential. On RuO$_2$(100) on the other hand, the films grow fully relaxed. Using hybrid piezoelectric/magnetic systems we have generated large amplitude magnetization waves mediated by magneto-elasticity with up to 25 degrees variation in the magnetization orientation. We present direct imaging and quantification of both standing and propagating acoustomagnetic waves with different wavelengths, over large distances up to several millimeters in a nickel thin film.

Transient near-fields around metallic nanotips drive many applications, including the generation of ultrafast electron pulses and their use in electron microscopy. We have investigated the electron emission from a gold nanotip driven by mid-infrared few-cycle laser pulses. We identify a low-energy peak in the kinetic energy spectrum and study its shift to higher energies with increasing laser intensities from $1.7$ to $3.7\cdot10^{11} \mathrm{W}/\mathrm{cm}^2$. The experimental observation of the upshift of the low-energy peak is compared to a simple model and numerical simulations, which show that the decay of the near-field on a nanometer scale results in non-adiabatic transfer of the ponderomotive potential to the kinetic energy of emitted electrons and in turn to a shift of the peak. We derive an analytic expression for the non-adiabatic ponderomotive shift, which, after the previously found quenching of the quiver motion, completes the understanding of the role of inhomogeneous fields in strong-field photoemission from nanostructures., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, journal article

Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers. Since their first observation at room temperature, progress has been made in their current-induced manipulation, with fast motion reported in stray-field-coupled multilayers. However, the complex spin textures with hybrid chiralities and large power dissipation in these multilayers limit their practical implementation and the fundamental understanding of their dynamics. Here, we report on the current-driven motion of N\'eel skyrmions with diameters in the 100-nm range in an ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO trilayer. We find that these skyrmions can be driven at a speed of 100 m/s and exhibit a drive-dependent skyrmion Hall effect, which is accounted for by the effect of pinning. Our experiments are well substantiated by an analytical model of the skyrmion dynamics as well as by micromagnetic simulations including material inhomogeneities. By comparing the growth of Cu thin films on bare and graphene-covered Ru(0001) surfaces, we demonstrate the role of graphene as a surfactant allowing the formation of flat Cu films. Low-energy electron microscopy, X-ray photoemission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal that depositing Cu at 580 K leads to distinct behaviors on both types of surfaces. On bare Ru, a Stranski-Krastanov growth is observed, with first the formation of an atomically flat and monolayer-thick wetting layer, followed by the nucleation of three-dimensional islands. In sharp contrast, when Cu is deposited on a graphene-covered Ru surface under the very same conditions, Cu intercalates below graphene and grows in a step-flow manner: atomically-high growth fronts of intercalated Cu form at the graphene edges, and extend towards the center of the flakes. Spin Hall effect provides an efficient tool for the conversion of a charge current into a spin current, opening the possibility of producing pure spin currents in non-magnetic materials for the next generation of spintronics devices. In this sense, giant Spin Hall Effect has been recently reported in Cu doped with 0.5 % Bi grown by sputtering and larger values are expected for larger Bi doping, according to first principles calculations. In this work we demonstrate the possibility of doping Cu with up to 10 % of Bi atoms without evidences of Bi surface segregation or cluster formation, as studied by different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. In addition, YIG/BiCu structures have been grown, showing a spin mixing conductance larger that the one shown by similar Pt/YIG structures.
