1. Chatting Up Attachment: Using LLMs to Predict Adult Bonds

Abstract

Obtaining data in the medical field is challenging, making the adoption of AI technology within the space slow and high-risk. We evaluate whether we can overcome this obstacle with synthetic data generated by large language models (LLMs). In particular, we use GPT-4 and Claude 3 Opus to create agents that simulate adults with varying profiles, childhood memories, and attachment styles. These agents participate in simulated Adult Attachment Interviews (AAI), and we use their responses to train models for predicting their underlying attachment styles. We evaluate our models using a transcript dataset from 9 humans who underwent the same interview protocol, analyzed and labeled by mental health professionals. Our findings indicate that training the models using only synthetic data achieves performance comparable to training the models on human data. Additionally, while the raw embeddings from synthetic answers occupy a distinct space compared to those from real human responses, the introduction of unlabeled human data and a simple standardization allows for a closer alignment of these representations. This adjustment is supported by qualitative analyses and is reflected in the enhanced predictive accuracy of the standardized embeddings.

16. In Situ Synthesis and Characterization of Graphitic Carbon Nitride/Metakaolin Composite Photocatalysts Using a Commercial Kaolin

Abstract

Kaolin-based graphitic carbon nitride (g-CNx) composite photocatalysts were synthesized from a urea precursor using a commercial kaolin. Structural characterization by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) verified the successful thermal polycondensation of g-CNx along the thermal dehydroxylation of kaolinite to metakaolin at 550 °C. The g-CNx content of the composites were estimated by thermogravimetry and CHN analysis, ranging from ca. 87 m/m% to ca. 2 m/m% of dry mass. The addition of kaolin during the composite synthesis was found to have a significant effect: the yield of in situ formed g-CNx drastically decreased (from ca. 4.9 m/m% to 3.8–0.1 m/m%) with increasing kaolin content. CHN and FTIR indicated the presence of nitrogen-rich g-CNx, having a specific surface area of 50 m2/g, which synergistically increased after composite synthesis to 67–82 m2/g. Estimated optical band gaps indicated the affinity to absorb in the visible light spectrum (λ < 413 nm). Photocatalytic activity upon both UV and artificial sunlight irradiation was observed by hydroxyl radical evolution, however, without the synergistic effect expected from the favorable porosity.

Abstract

Cyantraniliprole is a novel anthranilic diamide insecticide registered for controlling chewing and sucking insect pests. Here, the lethal and sublethal effects of this insecticide on two destructive lepidopteran pests, Spodoptera littoralis Boisduval and Agrotis ipsilon Hufnagel, were evaluated. Because the effects of novel insecticides on beneficial and non-target arthropods must be considered, the impact of cyantraniliprole on a generalist biological control agent, Chrysoperla carnea [Stephens 1836], were also examined. Overall, our study revealed that cyantraniliprole was more toxic to A. ipsilon than to S. littoralis. Moreover, the LC15 and LC50 of the insecticide significantly prolonged the duration of the larval and pupal stages and induced enzymatic detoxification activity in both species. Treatment of the second-instar larvae of C. carnea with the recommended concentration of cyantraniliprole (0.75 mg/L) doubled the mortality rates and resulted in a slight negative effect on the biology and detoxification enzymes of C. carnea. Our results indicate that both sublethal and lethal concentrations of cyantraniliprole can successfully suppress S. littoralis and A. ipsilon populations. They also suggest that C. carnea, as a generalist predator, is compatible with cyantraniliprole under the modelled realistic field conditions. In future investigations, insights into the effects of cyantraniliprole on S. littoralis, A. ipsilon, and C. carnea under field conditions will be required to appropriately validate our results.

Abstract

Penconazole (C12H15Cl2N3) is widely used to prevent fungal infection of fruits. Since this toxic fungicide is recalcitrant to biological degradation, it has harmful impacts on aquatic ecosystems. TiO2-based heterogeneous photocatalysis proved to be an efficient method for its mineralization. To monitor the processes occurring under the influence of illumination, the light absorbance, the pH, and the TOC of the samples were measured. The concentration of the model compound and the degradation products were determined by HPLC and IC. Penconazole did not decompose under UV light (λmax = 371 nm) without a catalyst. In the presence of TiO2, mineralization took place. The initial degradation rate in air (7.7 × 10−4 mM s−1) was 5 times higher than under argon. The formation rate of hydrochloric acid (1.04 × 10−3 mM s−1) in the former case significantly contributed to the acidification of the liquid phase. NH4+ also formed, at the rate of 5.9 × 10−4 mM s−1, and very slightly transformed to NO3−. Due to the intermediates identified by HPLC-MS, hydroxylation, H abstraction, and Cl elimination are involved in the degradation mechanism, in which photogenerated HO● radicals, conduction-band electrons, and (under air) superoxide radical anions (O2●−) play considerable roles.
