Several studies have reported on the appearance of cutaneous porphyria in people treated with estrogen. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of oral contraceptives (OCs) on levels of porphyrins in urine in nonporphyric women. 30 women aged 21-40 and on OCs were observed as the study group, and 10 women using other contraceptive methods were observed as the control group. Urinary porphyrins were measured by the Remington method. Levels of urinary coproporphyrin and of urinary uroporphyrin were higher in the study group than in the control group. These differences, however, are not statistically significant. To study the effect of duration of OC treatment, women who had taken OCs for 3-6 months and women who had taken OCs for longer than 6 months were observed, and the means of urinary coproporphyrin and uroporphyrin measured. Again, the differences were found to be insignificant, although slightly higher values of urinary coproporphyrin were obtained for women who had been on OCs for a longer period. These results compare favorably with others reported in the published literature. It can be concluded that OC treatment has no significant bearing on porphyrin metabolism.

lcsh:Dermatology ,lcsh:RL1-803 - Abstract
A peculiar erythemato-vesicular dermatitis caused by a beetle, seen in 77 cases is analysed. The age range was 2.5 years to 57 years. Urban to rural ratio was 3.52:1. The common sites of involvement were the exposed sites, mainly the face. Burning sensation was the commonest symptom. Lesions were tender and mainly linear. The presence of kissing lesions was suggestive of the genus Paederus as the cause. A typical seasonal variation with maximum numbers in July was noted. The causative beetle could not be found out because none of the patients saw it. All cases responded well to antihistamine corticosteroid combination systemically and antibiotic-corticosteroid combination locally.

Background Oocyte (egg) retrieval for in-vitro fertilization is a relatively short procedure, usually performed as an outpatient. Propofol is a suitable anesthetic agent. Target-controlled infusion is a recently developed system that aids rapid recovery from propofol anesthesia. This study sought to determine the target concentration of propofol required to prevent movement in 50% (Cp50) and 95% (Cp95) of women during oocyte retrieval, and investigated whether supplemental nitrous oxide (N 2 O) modified the Cp50 and Cp95. Methods Forty-seven women scheduled for oocyte retrieval were randomly selected to receive either O 2 -air mixture (control group; n =23) or 50% O 2 -N 2 O mixture (Nitrous oxide group; n =24). Propofol was infused using a target-controlled infusion system with the concentration determined by up-down sequential allocation using 0.5μg/mL step size. Transvaginal oocyte retrieval was performed after reaching target blood concentration. Patient responses to oocyte retrieval were noted as either no movement or movement . Results Using target-controlled infusion the Cp50 was 4.1μg/mL in the control group and 3.3μg/mL in the nitrous oxide group. Calculated Cp95 values were 4.0μg/mL and 5.1μg/mL with and without 50% nitrous oxide respectively. Conclusions The Cp50 value for target-controlled infusion propofol during oocyte retrieval was significantly reduced by a factor of 1.24 (95% CI 1.07-1.44) with the use of 50% nitrous oxide.

We have searched for a T/CP violation signature arising from an electric dipole form factor (d_tau) of the tau lepton in the e+e- -> tau+tau- reaction. Using an optimal observable method for 29.5 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider at sqrt{s}=10.58 GeV, we obtained the preliminary result Re(d_tau) = (1.15 +- 1.70) x 10^{-17} ecm and Im(d_tau) = (-0.83 +- 0.86) x 10^{-17} ecm for the real and imaginary parts of d_tau, respectively, and set the 95% confidence level limits -2.2 < Re(d_tau) < 4.5 (10^{-17} ecm) and -2.5 < Im(d_tau) < 0.8 (10^{-17} ecm)., Invited talk at the Seventh International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics (TAU02), Santa Cruz, Ca, USA, Sept 2002, 8 pages, LaTeX, 19 eps figures

This study sought to determine the predicted Cp50 of propofol required for laryngeal mask airway insertion (Cp50LMA) and to investigate whether nitrous oxide reduces these required concentrations. Using target-controlled infusion and incorporating the standard Diprifusor pharmacokinetic model, 46 unpremedicated patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The patients received either 40% oxygen in air (control group: n = 23), or 60% nitrous oxide in oxygen (nitrous oxide group: n = 23). The target concentration for each patient was determined using the up and down method. Following equilibration between the predetermined blood and effect site concentrations, had been established for > 10 min, laryngeal mask airway insertion was attempted without neuromuscular relaxants. The data were analysed using a probit analysis to obtain Cp50LMA levels. The values for Cp50LMA were 3.24 micro g.ml-1 in the control group and 1.93 microg.ml-1 in the nitrous oxide group.

We present measurements of CP-violating parameters in $B^0(\bar{B}{}^0) \to \eta^\prime K_S^0$ and $B^{\pm} \to \eta' K^{\pm}$ decays based on a 41.8 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider. We fully reconstruct one neutral $B$ meson as a $B^0(\bar{B}{}^0) \to \eta^\prime K_S^0$ CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying $B$ from its decay products. From the distribution of time intervals between pairs of $B$ meson decay points, we obtain the CP-violating asymmetry parameters ${\mathcal S}_{\eta^\prime K_S^0} = 0.28\pm0.55(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.08}(syst)$, and ${\mathcal A}_{\eta^\prime K_S^0} = 0.13\pm0.32(stat)^{+0.09}_{-0.06}(syst)$. We also reconstruct charged $B^{\pm} \to \eta^\prime K^{\pm}$ decays and determine a direct-CP violating asymmetry value of ${\mathcal A}_{\eta^\prime K^\pm}=(-1.5\pm7.0(stat)\pm0.9(syst))%$.

This paper describes the muon identification method and its performance in the Belle experiment at KEKB. Muon and hadron likelihood are calculated for each track using its range and transverse scattering in the KL-and-muon detector (KLM). We apply a cut on the normalized muon likelihood L μ to identify the track as a muon. Above the detection threshold of 0.6 GeV /c , the measured muon detection efficiency and pion fake rate are approximately constant for momenta greater than 1.0 and 1.5 GeV /c , respectively. Between 1.0 and 3.0 GeV /c , the averaged muon detection efficiency is 89% and the pion fake rate per track is 1.4% over the KLM acceptance, using the standard selection criterion L μ >0.9 .

The production of the \chi_{c2} charmonium state in two-photon collisions has been measured with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. A clear signal for \chi_{c2} --> \gamma J/\psi, J/\psi --> l^+l^- is observed in a 32.6fb^{-1} data sample accumulated at center-of-mass energies near 10.6GeV, and the product of its two-photon decay width and branching fraction is determined to be \Gamma_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2})B(\chi_{c2} --> \gamma J/\psi) B(J/\psi --> l^+l^-)= 13.5 +/- 1.3(stat.) +/- 1.1(syst.)eV., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, to be submitted to Phys. We present a measurement of the branching fraction for the semileptonic B decay B 0 →D + l − ν , where l− can be either an electron or a muon. We find Γ( B 0 →D + l − ν )=(13.79±0.76±2.51) ns −1 , and the resulting branching fraction B ( B 0 →D + l − ν )=(2.13±0.12±0.39)% , where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We also investigate the B 0 →D + l − ν form factor and the implications of the result for |Vcb|. From a fit to the differential decay distribution we obtain the rate normalization |Vcb|FD(1)=(4.11±0.44±0.52)×10−2. Using a theoretical calculation of FD(1), the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix element |Vcb|=(4.19±0.45±0.53±0.30)×10−2 is obtained, where the last error comes from the theoretical uncertainty of FD(1). The results are based on a data sample of 10.2fb−1 recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e− collider.

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |Vcb| using a 10.2 fb−1 data sample recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e− storage ring. By extrapolating the differential decay width of the B 0 →D ∗+ e − ν decay to the kinematic limit at which the D ∗+ is at rest with respect to the B 0 , we extract the product of |Vcb| with the normalization of the decay form factor F(1), |Vcb|F(1)=(3.54±0.19±0.18)×10−2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. A value of |Vcb|=(3.88±0.21±0.20±0.19)×10−2 is obtained using a theoretical calculation of F(1), where the third error is due to the theoretical uncertainty in the value of F(1). The branching fraction B ( B 0 →D ∗+ e − ν ) is measured to be (4.59±0.23±0.40)×10−2.

We have operated successfully glass resistive plate counters in the streamer mode at the BELLE experiment by using a nonflammable gas mixture of argon 30%, butane-silver 8%, and freon, HFC-134a 62%. This freon is non-ozone-depleting but has a high global warming potential (1300 times higher than that of CO/sub 2/). Thus freon gases might be unusable in the near future. We tested the performance of a glass resistive plate counter operated in the streamer mode with an alternative gas mixtures of argon, butane, CO/sub 2/, and/or O/sub 2/ gases and found an efficiency of about 90%.

We report a determination of the ${B}_{d}^{0}\ensuremath{-}{\overline{B}}_{d}^{0}$ mixing parameter $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ decays. The measurement is based on a $5.9{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.463\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.016(\mathrm{syst}){\mathrm{ps}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. This is the first determination of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ from time evolution measurements at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$. We also place limits on possible $\mathrm{CPT}$ violations.

We present a measurement of the standard model $\mathrm{CP}$ violation parameter $\mathrm{sin}2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}$ (also known as $\mathrm{sin}2\ensuremath{\beta}$) based on a $10.5{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider. One neutral $B$ meson is reconstructed in the $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}_{S}$, $\ensuremath{\psi}(2S){K}_{S}$, ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c1}{K}_{S}$, ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}{K}_{S}$, $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}_{L}$, or $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ $\mathrm{CP}$-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of the accompanying $B$ meson is identified from its charged particle decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between the two $B$-meson decay points, we determine $\mathrm{sin}2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.58}_{\ensuremath{-}0.34}^{+0.32}(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.10}^{+0.09}(\mathrm{syst})$.

We have tested the performance of glass RPC operated in streamer mode with the gas mixture containing SF 6 instead of freon, HFC-134a. By using a small amount of SF 6 , we could operate the RPCs at a much lower high voltage with comparable performance to the HFC-134a mixture except for having a narrower efficiency plateau. The feasibility for using the SF 6 mixture is discussed.

The Belle experiment at the KEKB has collected beam collision data from June 1st through August 4th, 1999, integrated luminosity during this period is 25 pb/sup -1/, and the data contain approximately 10,000 e/sup +/e/sup -//spl rarr//spl mu//sup +//spl mu//sup $/events and 50,000 hadronic events. Using those events, we study the performance of endcap RPC modules in the Belle detector. The study shows that the endcap RPC modules perform quite well in detecting muons and K/sub L//sup 0/ mesons.

The evidence for direct charged particles (CP) violation in the decay B0→K+ π- was investigated with 253 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e- collider. 275 x 106 BB pairs were used to observe a B→K±π∓ signal with 2140 ±53 events. Mixing induced CP violation in the B sector was established in b → ccs transitions. The result suggests large interference between tree and penguin diagrams and the existence of final state interactions.

We report the results of a study of charged B decays to the D(+/-)pi(-/+)pi(-/+) and D(*+/-)pi(-/+)pi(-/+) final states using complete D-(*) reconstruction. The contributions of two-body B-->D**pi decays with narrow (j=3/2) and broad (j=1/2) D** states have been determined and the masses and widths of four D** states have been measured. This is the first observation of the broad P-wave D-0*(0) and D'(0)(1) mesons. The analysis is based on a data sample of 65 million B(B) over bar pairs collected in the Belle experiment.

We report the observation of the decay D0-->phigamma with a statistical significance of 5.4sigma in 78.1 fb(-1) of data collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+e- collider. This is the first observation of a flavor-changing radiative decay of a charmed meson. The Cabibbo- and color-suppressed decays D0-->phipi(0), phieta are also observed for the first time. We measure branching fractions B(D0-->phigamma)=[2.60(+0.70)(-0.61)(stat)+0.15-0.17(syst)] x 10(-5), B(D0-->phipi(0))=[8.01+/-0.26(stat)+/-0.47(syst)] x 10(-4), and B(D0-->phieta)=[1.48+/-0.47(stat)+/-0.09(syst)] x 10(-4).

The radiative decay B-->phi K gamma is observed for the first time. The branching fraction for the charged B--->phi K- gamma decay mode is measured to be B(B--->phi K- gamma)=(3.4+/-0.9+/-0.4)x10(-6). The photon energy distribution for the B--->phi K- gamma decay is presented. The signal for the neutral B(0)-->phi K(0)gamma decay mode is not statistically significant and an upper limit, B(B(0)-->phi K(0)gamma)
