Magnons, the quantum-mechanical fundamental excitations of magnetic solids, are bosons whose number does not need to be conserved in scattering processes. Microwave-induced parametric magnon processes, often called Suhl instabilities, have been believed to occur in magnetic thin films only, where quasi-continuous magnon bands exist. Here, we reveal the existence of such nonlinear magnon-magnon scattering processes and their coherence in ensembles of magnetic nanostructures known as artificial spin ice. We find that these systems exhibit effective scattering processes akin to those observed in continuous magnetic thin films. We utilize a combined microwave and microfocused Brillouin light scattering measurement approach to investigate the evolution of their modes. Scattering events occur between discrete bands whose resonant frequencies are determined by each nanomagnet's mode volume and profile. Comparison with numerical simulations reveals that parametric pumping leads to scattering from bulk modes into edge modes. Moreover, our results suggest that tunable directional scattering is possible in these structures.

Topological magnetic monopoles, also known as hedgehogs or Bloch points, are three-dimensional (3D) nonlocal spin textures that are robust to thermal and quantum fluctuations due to their topology1-4. Understanding their properties is of both fundamental interest and practical applications1-9. However, it has been difficult to experimentally produce topological magnetic monopoles in a controlled manner and directly observe their 3D magnetization vector field and interactions at the nanoscale. Here, we report the creation of 138 stable topological magnetic monopoles at the specific sites of a ferromagnetic meta-lattice at room temperature. We further develop 3D soft x-ray vector ptychography to determine the magnetization vector and emergent magnetic field of the topological monopoles with a 3D spatial resolution of 10 nm. This spatial resolution is comparable to the magnetic exchange length of transition metals10, enabling us to probe monopole-monopole interactions. We find that the topological monopole pairs with positive and negative charges are separated by 18.3±1.6 nm, while the positively and negatively charged pairs are stabilized at comparatively longer distances of 36.1±2.4 nm and 43.1±2.0 nm, respectively. We also observe virtual topological monopoles created by magnetic voids in the meta-lattice. This work demonstrates that ferromagnetic meta-lattices could be used as a new platform to create and investigate the interactions and dynamics of topological magnetic monopoles. Furthermore, we expect that soft x-ray vector ptychography can be broadly applied to quantitatively image 3D vector fields in magnetic and anisotropic materials at the nanoscale.

We developed soft x-ray vector ptychography at 10 nm spatial resolution without requiring a priori knowledge, which is then used to quantitatively image 3D magnetization vector fields of topological magnetic monopoles and their interactions.

Symmetry is a powerful concept in physics, but its applicability to far-from-equilibrium states is still being understood. Recent attention has focused on how far-from-equilibrium states lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking. Conversely, ultrafast optical pumping can be used to drastically change the energy landscape and quench the magnetic order parameter in magnetic systems. Here, we find a distinct symmetry-dependent ultrafast behaviour by use of ultrafast x-ray scattering from magnetic patterns with varying degrees of isotropic and anisotropic symmetry. After pumping with an optical laser, the scattered intensity reveals a radial shift exclusive to the isotropic component and exhibits a faster recovery time from quenching for the anisotropic component. These features arise even when both symmetry components are concurrently measured, suggesting a correspondence between the excitation and the magnetic order symmetry. Our results underline the importance of symmetry as a critical variable to manipulate the magnetic order in the ultrafast regime.

Domain wall motion is in the core of many information technologies ranging from storage [Beach et al., J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 320, 1272–1281 (2008)], processing [Tatara et al., Phys. Rep. 468, 213–301 (2008)], and sensing [Ralph and Stiles, J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 320, 1190–1216 (2008)] up to novel racetrack memory architectures [Parkin et al., Science 320, 190–194 (2008)]. The finding of magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials [Huang et al., Nature 546, 270 (2017); Gong et al., Nature 546, 265–269 (2017); Guguchia et al., Sci. Adv. 4, eaat3672 (2018); Klein et al., Science 360, 1218–1222 (2018)] has offered a new frontier for the exploration and understanding of domain walls at the limit of few atom-thick layers. However, to use 2D vdW magnets for building spintronics nanodevices such as domain-wall based logic [Allwood et al., Science 309, 1688–1692 (2005); Luo et al., Nature 579, 214–218 (2020); Xu et al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 3, 97–100 (2008)], it is required to gain control of their domain wall dynamics by external driving forces such as spin-polarized currents or magnetic fields, which have so far been elusive. Here, we show that electric currents as well as magnetic fields can efficiently move domain walls in the recently discovered 2D vdW magnets CrI3 and CrBr3 at low temperatures and robust down to monolayer. We realize field- and current-driven domain wall motion with velocities up to 1020 m s−1, which are comparable to the state-of-the-art materials for domain-wall based applications [Yang et al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 10, 221–226 (2015); Woo et al., Nat. Mater. 15, 501–506 (2016); Vélez et al., Nat. Commun. 10, 4750 (2019); Siddiqui et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 057701 (2018); Ryu et al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 8, 527–533 (2013)]. Domain walls keep their coherence driven by the spin-transfer torque induced by the current and magnetic fields up to large values of about [Formula: see text] A cm−2 and 5 T, respectively. For larger magnitudes of current or field, a transition to a hydrodynamic spin-liquid regime is observed with the emission of a periodic train of spin-wave solitons with modulational instability [Rabinovich and Trubetskov, Oscillations and Waves: In Linear and Nonlinear Systems, Mathematics and its Applications (Springer Netherlands, 2011)]. The emitted waveform achieves terahertz (THz) frequency in a wide range of fields and current densities, which opens up perspectives for reconfigurable magnonic devices. Moreover, we found that these spin-waves can transport spin angular momentum through the layers over distances as long as 10 μm without losses for the transport of spin information. Our results push the boundary of what is currently known about the dynamics of domain walls in 2D vdW ferromagnets and unveil strategies to design ultrathin, high-speed, and high-frequency spintronic devices.

In the last decade, nanoscale resistive devices with memory have been the subject of intense study because of their possible use in brain-inspired computing. However, operational endurance is one of the limiting factors in the adoption of such technology. For this reason, we discuss the emergence of current-induced memristance in magnetic materials, known for their durability. We show analytically and numerically that a single ferromagnetic layer can possess GHz memristance, due to a combination of two factors: a current-induced transfer of angular momentum (Zhang-Li torque) and the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). We term the resulting effect the anisotropic magneto-memristance (AMM). We connect the AMM to the topology of the magnetization state, within a simple model of a 1-dimensional annulus-shaped magnetic layer, confirming the analytical results with micromagnetic simulations for permalloy. Unsteady nonlinear magnetization dynamics are studied in an easy-plane ferromagnetic channel subject to spin injection at one edge. The model Landau-Lifshitz equation is known to support steady-state solutions, termed dissipative exchange flows (DEFs) or spin superfluids. In this work, by means of numerical simulations and theoretical analysis, we provide a full description of the injection-induced, large-amplitude, nonlinear magnetization dynamics up to the steady state. The dynamics prior to reaching steady state are driven by spin injection, the perpendicular applied magnetic field, the exchange interaction, and local demagnetizing fields. We show that the dynamics take well-defined profiles in the form of rarefaction waves (RW), dispersive shock waves (DSW), and solitons. The combination of these building blocks depends on the interplay between the spin injection strength and the applied magnetic field. A solitonic feature at the injection boundary, signaling the onset of the magnetic "supersonic" condition at the injection edge, rapidly develops and persists in the steady-state configuration of a contact soliton DEF. We also demonstrate the existence of sustained soliton-train dynamics in long time that can only arise in a nonzero applied magnetic field scenario. An important property of spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) is their ability to produce a frequency modulated (FM) signal, which is very critical for communication applications. We here demonstrate a novel single sideband (SSB) modulation phenomenon using a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ)-based STNO, which saves transmission bandwidth and in principle should minimize attenuation for wireless communication. Experimentally, lower single sidebands (LSSBs) have been successfully demonstrated over a wide range of modulation frequency, f m = 150 MHz-1 GHz. The observed LSSBs are determined by the intrinsic properties of the device, which can be modeled well by a nonlinear frequency and amplitude modulation formulation and reproduced in macrospin simulations. Moreover, our macrospin simulation results show that the range of modulation current and modulation frequency for generating SSBs can be controlled by the field-like torque and biasing conditions.

Ultrafast optical pumping of spatially nonuniform magnetic textures is known to induce far-from-equilibrium spin transport effects. Here, we use ultrafast x-ray diffraction with unprecedented dynamic range to study the laser-induced dynamics of labyrinth domain networks in ferromagnetic CoFe/Ni multilayers. We detected azimuthally isotropic, odd order, magnetic diffraction rings up to 5th order. The amplitudes of all three diffraction rings quench to different degrees within 1.6 ps. In addition, all three of the detected diffraction rings both broaden by 15% and radially contract by 6% during the quench process. We are able to rigorously quantify a 31% ultrafast broadening of the domain walls via Fourier analysis of the order-dependent quenching of the three detected diffraction rings. The broadening of the diffraction rings is interpreted as a reduction in the domain coherence length, but the shift in the ring radius, while unambiguous in its occurrence, remains unexplained. In particular, we demonstrate that a radial shift explained by domain wall broadening can be ruled out. With the unprecedented dynamic range of our data, our results provide convincing evidence that labyrinth domain structures are spatially perturbed at ultrafast speeds under far-from-equilibrium conditions, albeit the mechanism inducing the perturbations remains yet to be clarified.

Ferromagnetic channels subject to spin injection at one extremum sustain long-range coherent textures that carry spin currents known as dissipative exchange flows (DEFs). In the weak injection regime, spin currents carried by DEFs decay algebraically and extend through the length of the channel, a regime known as spin superfluidity. Similar to fluids, these structures are prone to phase-slips that manifest as vortex-antivortex pairs. Here, we numerically study vortex shedding from DEFs excited in a magnetic nanowire with a physical obstacle. Using micromagnetic simulations, we find regimes of laminar flow and vortex shedding as a function of obstacle position tunable by the and spin injection sign and magnitude. Vortex-antivortex pairs translate forward (VF regime) or backward (VB regime) with respect to the detector's extremum, resulting in well-defined spectral features. Qualitatively similar results are obtained when temperature, anisotropy, and weak non-local dipole fields are included in the simulations. These results provide clear features associated with DEFs that may be detected experimentally in devices with nominally identical boundary conditions. Furthermore, our results suggest that obstacles can be considered as DEF control gates, opening an avenue to manipulate DEFs via physical defects.

Artificial spin ices are ensembles of geometrically-arranged, interacting nanomagnets which have shown promising potential for the realization of reconfigurable magnonic crystals. Such systems allow for the manipulation of spin waves on the nanoscale and their potential use as information carriers. However, there are presently two general obstacles to the realization of artificial spin ice-based magnonic crystals: the magnetic state of artificial spin ices is difficult to reconfigure and the magnetostatic interactions between the nanoislands are often weak, preventing mode coupling. We demonstrate, using micromagnetic modeling, that coupling a reconfigurable artificial spin ice geometry made of weakly interacting nanomagnets to a soft magnetic underlayer creates a complex system exhibiting dynamically coupled modes. These give rise to spin wave channels in the underlayer at well-defined frequencies, based on the artificial spin ice magnetic state, which can be reconfigured. These findings open the door to the realization of reconfigurable magnonic crystals with potential applications for data transport and processing in magnonic-based logic architectures., 8 figures

Recent theoretical studies have demonstrated the possibility to excite and sustain noncollinear magnetization states in ferromagnetic nanowires. The resulting state is referred to as a spin-density wave (SDW). SDWs can be interpreted as hydrodynamic states with a constant fluid density and fluid velocity in systems with easy-plane anisotropy. Here, we consider the effect of the nonlocal dipole field arising from the finite thickness of magnetic thin films on the spatial profile of the SDW and on the associated magnon dispersion. Utilizing a hydrodynamic formulation of the Larmor torque equation, it is found that the nonlocal dipole field modulates the fluid velocity. Such a modulation induces a magnonic band structure unlike the typical dispersion relation for magnons on uniform magnetization. The analytical results are validated by micromagnetic simulations. Band gaps on the order of GHz are numerically observed to depend on the SDW fluid velocity and film thickness for realistic material parameters. The spin Hall effect in a non-magnetic metal with spin–orbit coupling injects transverse spin currents into adjacent magnetic layers, where the resulting spin transfer torque can drive spin wave auto-oscillations. Such spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) hold great promise as extremely compact and broadband microwave signal generators and magnonic spin wave injectors. Here we show that SHNOs can also be mutually synchronized with unprecedented efficiency. We demonstrate mutual synchronization of up to nine individual SHNOs, each separated by 300 nm. Through further tailoring of the connection regions we can extend the synchronization range to 4 μm. The mutual synchronization is observed electrically as an increase in the power and coherence of the microwave signal, and confirmed optically using micro-Brillouin light scattering microscopy as two spin wave regions sharing the same spectral content, in agreement with our micromagnetic simulations.

The field of spin hydrodynamics aims to describe magnetization dynamics from a fluid perspective. For ferromagnetic materials, there is an exact mapping between the Landau-Lifshitz equation and a set of dispersive hydrodynamic equations. This analogy provides ample opportunities to explore novel magnetization dynamics and magnetization states that can lead to applications relying entirely upon magnetic materials, for example, long-distance transport of information. This article provides an overview of the theoretical foundations of spin hydrodynamics and their physical interpretation in the context of spin transport. Over the past few years, the study of magnetization dynamics in artificial spin ices has become a vibrant field of study. Artificial spin ices are ensembles of geometrically arranged, interacting magnetic nanoislands, which display frustration by design. These were initially created to mimic the behavior in rare earth pyrochlore materials and to study emergent behavior and frustration using two-dimensional magnetic measurement techniques. Recently, it has become clear that it is possible to create artificial spin ices, which can potentially be used as functional materials. In this Perspective, we review the resonant behavior of spin ices (which is in the GHz frequency range), focusing on their potential application as magnonic crystals. In magnonic crystals, spin waves are functionalized for logic applications by means of band structure engineering. While it has been established that artificial spin ices can possess rich mode spectra, the applicability of spin ices to create magnonic crystals hinges upon their reconfigurability. Consequently, we describe recent work aiming to develop techniques and create geometries allowing full reconfigurability of the spin ice magnetic state. We also discuss experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods for determining the spectral response of artificial spin ices, and give an outlook on new directions for reconfigurable spin ices., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

The synchronization of multiple nanocontact spin-torque oscillators (NC-STOs) is mediated by propagating spin waves (SWs). Although it has been shown that the Oersted field generated in the vicinity of the NC can dramatically alter the emission pattern of SWs, its role in the synchronization behaviour of multiple NCs has not been considered so far. Here we investigate the synchronization behaviour in multiple NC-STOs oriented either vertically or horizontally, with respect to the in-plane component of the external field. Synchronization is promoted (impeded) by the Oersted field landscape when the NCs are oriented vertically (horizontally) due to the highly anisotropic SW propagation. Not only is robust synchronization between two oscillators observed for separations larger than 1,000 nm, but synchronization of up to five oscillators, a new record, has been observed in the vertical array geometry. Furthermore, the synchronization can no longer be considered mutual in nature.

Planar ferromagnetic channels have been shown to theoretically support a long-range ordered and coherently precessing state where the balance between local spin injection at one edge and damping along the channel establishes a dissipative exchange flow, sometimes referred to as a spin superfluid. However, realistic materials exhibit in-plane anisotropy, which breaks the axial symmetry assumed in current theoretical models. Here, we study dissipative exchange flows in a ferromagnet with in-plane anisotropy from a dispersive hydrodynamic perspective. Through the analysis of a boundary value problem for a damped sine-Gordon equation, dissipative exchange flows in a ferromagnetic channel can be excited above a spin current threshold that depends on material parameters and the length of the channel. Symmetry-broken dissipative exchange flows display harmonic overtones that redshift the fundamental precessional frequency and lead to a reduced spin pumping efficiency when compared to their symmetric counterpart. Micromagnetic simulations are used to verify that the analytical results are qualitatively accurate, even in the presence of nonlocal dipole fields. Simulations also confirm that dissipative exchange flows can be driven by spin transfer torque in a finite-sized region. Systems that exhibit topologically protected edge states are interesting both from a fundamental point of view as well as for potential applications, the latter because of the absence of back-scattering and robustness to perturbations. It is desirable to be able to control and manipulate such edge states. Here, we show that artificial square ices can incorporate both features: an interfacial Dzyaloshinksii-Moriya gives rise to topologically non-trivial magnon bands, and the equilibrium state of the spin ice is reconfigurable with different configurations having different magnon dispersions and topology. The topology is found to develop as odd-symmetry bulk and edge magnon bands approach each other, so that constructive band inversion occurs in reciprocal space. Recent experiments on spin torque oscillators have revealed interactions between multiple magnetodynamic modes, including mode-coexistence, mode-hopping, and temperature-driven cross-over between modes. Initial multimode theory has indicated that a linear coupling between several dominant modes, arising from the interaction of the subdynamic system with a magnon bath, plays an essential role in the generation of various multimode behaviors, such as mode hopping and mode coexistence. In this work, we derive a set of rate equations to describe the dynamics of coupled magnetodynamic modes in a nano-contact spin torque oscillator. Expressions for both linear and nonlinear coupling terms are obtained, which allow us to analyze the dependence of the coupled dynamic behaviors of modes on external experimental conditions as well as intrinsic magnetic properties. Magnetization dynamics in thin film ferromagnets can be studied using a dispersive hydrodynamic formulation. The equations describing the magnetodynamics map to a compressible fluid with broken Galilean invariance parametrized by the longitudinal spin density and a magnetic analog of the fluid velocity that define spin-density waves. A direct consequence of these equations is the determination of a magnetic Mach number. Micromagnetic simulations reveal nucleation of nonlinear structures from an impenetrable object realized by an applied magnetic field spot or a defect. In this work, micromagnetic simulations demonstrate vortex-antivortex pair nucleation from an obstacle. Their interaction establishes either ordered or irregular vortex-antivortex complexes. Furthermore, when the magnetic Mach number exceeds unity (supersonic flow), a Mach cone and periodic wavefronts are observed, which can be well-described by solutions of the steady, linearized equations. These results are reminiscent of theoretical and experimental observations in Bose-Einstein condensates, and further supports the analogy between the magnetodynamics of a thin film ferromagnet and compressible fluids. We present a comprehensive review of the most recent advances in nanocontact spin torque oscillators (NC-STOs). NC-STOs are highly tunable, with both applied magnetic field and dc, broadband microwave signal generators. As opposed to the nanopillar geometry, where the lateral cross section of the entire device has been confined to a typically ${ diameter, in NC-STOs, it is only the current injection site that has been laterally confined on top of an extended magnetic film stack. Three distinct material combinations will be discussed: 1) a Co/Cu/NiFe pseudospin valve (PSV) where both the Co and NiFe have a dominant in-plane anisotropy; 2) a Co/Cu/ $[{\rm Co}/{\rm Ni}]_{4}$ orthogonal PSV where the Co/Ni multilayer has a strong perpendicular anisotropy; and 3) a single NiFe layer with asymmetric non-magnetic Cu leads. We explore the rich and diverse magnetodynamic modes that can be generated in these three distinct sample geometries.

We demonstrate magnetization auto-oscillations driven by pure spin currents in spin Hall nano-oscillators based on CoFeB/Pt bilayers. Despite the very low anisotropic magnetoresistance of CoFeB, a substantial microwave signal power can be detected, even at room temperature, indicating that a sizable spin wave amplitude is generated. Spin torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements reveal that the generated auto-oscillation frequency lies below the ferromagnetic resonance frequency of CoFeB and is therefore well described by a self-localized spin wave bullet mode.

Nanocontact spin-torque oscillators (NC-STOs) act as intrinsically nanoscale and highly current and magnetic field tunable, ultrawide band microwave signal generators. However, their low output power and high phase noise remain critical obstacles toward actual applications. Mutual synchronization of multiple NCs is one possibility to overcome these shortcomings. This letter presents a detailed study of the mutual synchronization in a NC-STO with two NCs. In particular, the effect of repeated measurements on the synchronization behavior is explored. Repeated measurements at high drive currents are shown to significantly degrade the performance of the devices with the most striking consequence being that the devices can no longer be synchronized. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements reveal a decrease in the saturation magnetization and an increase in the damping coefficient in annealed NiFe films, consistent with Cu diffusion into the NiFe from the adjacent Cu layers. This increase in damping will act to sever the spin wave-mediated communication channel between the NCs necessary for synchronization. These results highlight an important consideration when studying the synchronization behavior of multi-NC devices where Joule heating is expected to scale unfavorably with the number of NCs.

Spin torque oscillators (STOs) often exhibit multiple modes, leading to complex behavior. One example is mode hopping between different eigenmodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) STO. This mode hopping is a strong function of current and angle between the magnetization in the free and fixed layers, and away from anti-parallel configuration, mode hopping can be the dominant decoherence process. Another example is the linewidth of a nanocontact STO that can be a complex non-monotonic function of temperature in regions where two or more modes are excited by the oscillators. These phenomena require a generalization of the single-mode nonlinear STO theory to include mode coupling. We derive equations describing the slow time evolution of the coupled system and show they describe a dynamically driven system, similar to other systems that exhibit mode hopping in the presence of thermal fluctuations. In our description, mode coupling also leads to additional coupling between power and phase fluctuations, which can in certain limited cases lead to longer relaxation times for power fluctuations, and consequently to larger linewidths through the nonlinear frequency shift.

Magnetic Droplet When a solitary wave travels atop the surface of a fluid, its shape generally changes with time, with some of its components traveling at velocities slightly different than others. In nonlinear media, this spreading effect may be countered by a slimming effect stemming from the non-linearity, which generates an object with perfectly preserved shape, called a soliton. Solitons have been observed in fluids, granular media, and other systems. Mohseni et al. (p. 1295 ) detected a dissipative soliton (one that also balances gain and dissipation) in a magnetic system, in the form of a magnetic droplet consisting of a core of spins pointing opposite to the external magnetic field. The droplet exhibited peculiar dynamics and could be controlled by electric current.

Stripe domains are narrow, elongated, reversed regions that exist in magnetic materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Stripe domains appear as a pair of domain walls that can exhibit topology with a nonzero chirality. Recent experimental and numerical investigations identify an instability of stripe domains in the long direction as a means of nucleating isolated magnetic skyrmions. Here, the onset and nonlinear evolution of transverse instabilities for a dynamic stripe domain known as the bion stripe are investigated. Both non-topological and topological variants of the bion stripe are shown to exhibit a long-wavelength transverse instability with different characteristic features. In the former, small transverse variations in the stripe's width lead to a neck instability that eventually pinches the non-topological stripe into a chain of two-dimensional breathers composed of droplet soliton pairs. In the latter case, small variations in the stripe's center results in a snake instability whose topological structure leads to the nucleation of dynamic magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions as well as perimeter-modulated droplets. The magnetic dissipative droplet is a strongly nonlinear wave structure that can be stabilized in a thin film ferromagnet exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by use of spin transfer torque. These structures have been observed experimentally at room temperature, showcasing their robustness against noise. Here, we quantify the effects of thermal noise by deriving stochastic equations of motion for a droplet based on soliton perturbation theory. First, it is found that deterministic droplets are linearly unstable at large bias currents, subject to a drift instability. When the droplet is linearly stable, our framework allows us to analytically compute the droplet's generation linewidth and center variance. Additionally, we study the influence of nonlocal and Oersted fields with micromagnetic simulations, providing insight into their effect on the generation linewidth. These results motivate detailed experiments on the current and temperature-dependent linewidth as well as drift instability statistics of droplets, which are important figures-of-merit in the prospect of droplet-based applications.

Magnetization dynamics in an artificial square spin-ice lattice made of Ni80Fe20 with magnetic field applied in the lattice plane is investigated by broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The experimentally observed dispersion shows a rich spectrum of modes corresponding to different magnetization states. These magnetization states are determined by exchange and dipolar interaction between individual islands, as is confirmed by a semianalytical model. In the low field regime below 400 Oe a hysteretic behavior in the mode spectrum is found. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that the origin of the observed spectra is due to the initialization of different magnetization states of individual nanomagnets. Our results indicate that it might be possible to determine the spin-ice state by resonance experiments and are a first step towards the understanding of artificial geometrically frustrated magnetic systems in the high-frequency regime.

Microwave magnetodynamics in ferromagnets are often studied in the small-amplitude or weakly nonlinear regime corresponding to modulations of a well-defined magnetic state. However, strongly nonlinear regimes, where the aforementioned approximations are not applicable, have become experimentally accessible. By re-interpreting the governing Landau-Lifshitz equation of motion, we derive an exact set of equations of dispersive hydrodynamic form that are amenable to analytical study even when full nonlinearity and exchange dispersion are included. The resulting equations are shown to, in general, break Galilean invariance. A magnetic Mach number is obtained as a function of static and moving reference frames. The simplest class of solutions are termed uniform hydrodynamic states (UHSs), which exhibit fluid-like behavior including laminar flow at subsonic speeds and the formation of a Mach cone and wave-fronts at supersonic speeds. This work provides a detailed investigation of the measured in-plane field-swept homodyne-detected ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of an extended Co/Cu/NiFe pseudo spin valve stack using a nanocontact (NC) geometry. The magnetodynamics are generated by a pulse-modulated microwave current and the resulting rectified dc mixing voltage, which appears across the NC at resonance, is detected using a lock-in amplifier. Most notably, we find that the measured spectra of the NiFe layer are composite in nature and highly asymmetric, consistent with the broadband excitation of multiple modes. Additionally, the data must be fit with two Lorentzian functions in order to extract a reasonable value for the Gilbert damping of the NiFe. Aided by micromagnetic simulations, we conclude that (i) for in-plane fields the rf Oersted field in the vicinity of the NC plays the dominant role in generating the observed spectra, (ii) in addition to the FMR mode, exchange dominated spin waves are also generated, and (iii) the NC diameter sets the mean wavevector of the exchange dominated spin wave, in good agreement with the dispersion relation., 7 pages, 7 figures

Spin-torque oscillators (STOs) are devices that allow for the excitation of a variety of magnetodynamical modes at the nanoscale. Depending on both external conditions and intrinsic magnetic properties, STOs can exhibit regimes of mode hopping and even mode coexistence. Whereas mode hopping has been extensively studied in STOs patterned as nanopillars, coexistence has been only recently observed for localized modes in nanocontact STOs (NC-STOs), where the current is confined to flow through a NC fabricated on an extended pseudo spin valve. By means of electrical characterization and a multimode STO theory, we investigate the physical origin of the mode-coupling mechanisms favoring coexistence. Two coupling mechanisms are identified: (i) magnon-mediated scattering and (ii) intermode interactions. These mechanisms can be physically disentangled by fabricating devices where the NCs have an elliptical cross section. The generation power and linewidth from such devices are found to be in good qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions, as well as provide evidence of the dominant mode-coupling mechanisms.

Nanocontact spin-torque oscillators are devices in which the generation of propagating spin waves can be sustained by spin transfer torque. In the present paper, we perform combined electrical and optical measurements in a single experimental setup to systematically investigate the excitation of spin waves by a nanocontact spin-torque oscillator and their propagation in a Ni80Fe20 extended layer. By using microfocused Brillouin light scattering we observe an anisotropic emission of spin waves, due to the broken symmetry imposed by the inhomogeneous Oersted field generated by the injected current. In particular, spin waves propagate on the side of the nanocontact where the Oersted field and the in-plane component of the applied magnetic field are antiparallel, while propagation is inhibited on the opposite side. Moreover, propagating spin waves are efficiently excited only in a limited frequency range corresponding to wavevectors inversely proportional to the size of the nanocontact. This frequency range obeys the dispersion relation for exchange-dominated spin waves in the far field, as confirmed by micromagnetic simulations of similar devices. The present results have direct consequences for spin wave based applications, such as synchronization, computation, and magnonics.

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial spin textures that manifest themselves as quasiparticles in ferromagnetic thin films or noncentrosymmetric bulk materials. So far attention has focused on skyrmions stabilized either by the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) or by dipolar interaction, where in the latter case the excitations are known as bubble skyrmions. Here we demonstrate the existence of a dynamically stabilized skyrmion, which exists even when dipolar interactions and DMI are absent. We establish how such dynamic skyrmions can be nucleated, sustained and manipulated in an effectively lossless medium under a nanocontact. As quasiparticles, they can be transported between two nanocontacts in a nanowire, even in complete absence of DMI. Conversely, in the presence of DMI, we observe that the dynamical skyrmion experiences strong breathing. Modulation of an oscillator is crucial for its application in communication devices. While the output power and linewidth of single magnetic tunnel junction-based spin-torque oscillators (MTJ-STO) are not yet adequate for practical uses, the synchronization of such devices can overcome these limitations. Here, we investigate the modulation behavior of a parametrically synchronized MTJ-STO and show experimentally that modulation of the synchronized state preserves synchronization as long as the modulation frequency, fmod, is above a characteristic frequency, funlock. The unlocking frequency increases with the modulation amplitude in agreement with analytical estimates and numerical simulations. These phenomena are described as a non-resonant unlocking mechanism, whose characteristics are directly related to inherent parameters of the oscillator.

The frequency noise spectrum of a magnetic tunnel junction based spin torque oscillator is examined where multiple modes and mode-hopping events are observed. The frequency noise spectrum is found to consist of both white noise and 1/f frequency noise. We find a systematic and similar dependence of both white noise and 1/f frequency noise on bias current and the relative angle between the reference and free layers, which changes the effective damping and hence the mode-hopping behavior in this system. The frequency at which the 1/f frequency noise changes to white noise increases as the free layer is aligned away from the anti-parallel orientation w.r.t the reference layer. These results indicate that the origin of 1/f frequency noise is related to mode-hopping, which produces both white noise as well as 1/f frequency noise similar to the case of ring lasers.

We present recent experimental and numerical advancements in the understanding of spin transfer torque generated magnetic droplet solitons. The experimental work focuses on nano-contact spin torque oscillators (NC-STOs) based on orthogonal (pseudo) spin valves where the Co fixed layer has an easy-plane anisotropy, and the [Co/Ni] free layer has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The NC-STO resistance and microwave signal generation are measured simultaneously as a function of drive current and applied perpendicular magnetic field. Both exhibit dramatic transitions at a certain current dependent critical field value, where the microwave frequency drops 10 GHz, modulation sidebands appear, and the resistance exhibits a jump, while the magnetoresistance changes sign. We interpret these observations as the nucleation of a magnetic droplet soliton with a large fraction of its magnetization processing with an angle greater than 90 degrees, i.e., around a direction opposite that of the applied field. This interpretation is corroborated by numerical simulations. When the field is further increased, we find that the droplet eventually collapses under the pressure from the Zeeman energy. QC 20140610
