BackgroundProlonged length of hospital stay is the most common indicator of poor quality of health care and inefficient utilization of hospital resources. Prolonged hospital stay associated with increased mortality, hospital-acquired infection, and unnecessary utilization of hospital bed and other resources. Predicting length of hospital stay facilitates resource designing and initiates quality improvement activities. However, data regarding the prolonged length of hospital stays, and associated factors were a scarce in Ethiopia.MethodsA hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 316 adult patients from December 1 to January 10, 2022. A consecutive sampling technique was used during sampling procedure. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data regarding sociodemographic factors, clinical factors, medication factors, and behavioral factors through interview, medical record review and by using check list. The data was entered into the epidata4.6 version and exported to SPSS Version25 for binary logistic regression analysis. To identify factors associated with outcome variable, candidate variables (pResultOne fourth (24.7%) of the study participants experienced a prolonged length of stay at surgical ward. The odd of a prolonged length of hospital stay was high among patients who had comorbid condition [AOR=4.59, at 95% CI= (2.46-8.56)], who developed surgical site infection [AOR=5.02 at 95% CI= 1.97-12.80)], and who developed hospital acquired pneumonia during hospital stay [AOR= 3.43 at 95% CI= (1.36-8.64)].Conclusion and recommendationNear to quarter of the study participants’ experienced prolonged length of hospital stays. Comorbid condition, surgical site infection, and hospital acquired pneumonia were factors associated with prolonged length of hospital stay at surgical ward. Quality of care could be improved by adjusting surgical ward environment to prevent hospital acquired infection and focus on managing complication after surgery. Health care provider should be educating surgical patient about the risk of comorbidity on wound healing and early diagnosis and prevention of comorbid condition.

Background: As the World Health Organization situation report of November 14, 2021, globally there were over 252 million confirmed cases and over 5 million deaths attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic. How COVID-19 is transmitted put health care professionals (HCPs) at higher risk of contracting the disease because of their work conditions. Information regarding knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) towards the disease among HCPs are of higher importance to devise interventions that will tackle the pandemic.Methods: A facility based cross-sectional study was conducted from September 29 to October 07, 2020, among randomly selected 422 health care professionals. Epi-data and SPPS software were used for entry and analysis of the data respectively. Frequencies, percentages, and charts were used to describe the KAP of HCPs towards the disease. Binary logistic regression was conducted to identify factors that are associated with the KAP of HCPs. Variables with a p-value less than 0.05 were declared as significantly associated.Results: 406 HCPs have participated in this study. Less than half (45%) HCPs had sufficient knowledge about COVID-19. HCPs aged 30 or more years, working in health centers, and HCPs that received an orientation or training regarding COVID-19 had significantly higher knowledge. About 77% HCPs had a positive attitude towards COVID-19. Educational level and knowledge about COVID-19 were significant predictors of attitude. About three-fifths (59%) of study participants had good practice towards COVID-19. Types of health facilities, work experience, and orientation or training status were significantly associated with the practice.Conclusion: This study found a low proportion of HCPs having sufficient knowledge about COVID-19. About four in ten HCPs had poor practice towards COVID-19. Training, monitoring and supervision, knowledge and skill-sharing activities should be given due emphasis to tackle the pandemic in the region.

Background Pressure ulcer is largely avoidable, but its prevalence rate increased more than 80% in a 13 years study. Nurses have a great position to advance best practices towards the prevention of pressure ulcers. Therefore they should be knowledgeable of the signs and symptoms of pressure ulcers, and preventive strategies to reduce its incidence, but there is limited evidence on nurses’ knowledge and its associated factors to prevent pressure ulcers in Ethiopia. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 25 – April 23/ 2018. A total of 356 nurses were selected by stratification with a simple random sampling technique. Pretested structured questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions was used to collect data. Frequency distribution and percentage were computed to describe each variable. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression with a 95% confidence interval was also carried out to see the effect of each independent variable on the dependent variable and declared statistically significant association with P Result The mean knowledge score of nurses was 25.22 out of 41 item questions. Fifty-two point 5 % of nurses score above the mean. Males [AOR = 0.44, 95% CI (0.26–0.73)], working a maximum of eight hours [AOR = 3.57, 95% CI (1.48–8.61), not having training [(AOR = 2.31, 95% CI (1.14–4.61)], Low salary [AOR = 3.47, 95% CI (1.03–11.67)] were significantly associated with inadequate knowledge. Conclusion Generally a nurse’s knowledge of pressure ulcers was inadequate. Being female, working less than or equal to eight hours, not having the training and low working salary are contributors to a low level of knowledge for pressure ulcers.
