1. The Variable Sources in the Gaia archive

Abstract: At the core of the Gaia mission is a multi-epoch survey consisting of astrometric, photometric, spectrophotometric, and spectroscopic measurements. The astrometric time series provides parallaxes and proper motions, along with information on astrometric binary systems. The photometric time series offers a means to investigate the variability of the sources. Due to their whole-sky, multi-epoch nature, multiple instruments, their magnitude range covering 21 magnitudes, and their remarkable photometric precision, these data allow us to describe the variability of celestial phenomena in an unprecedented manner. For the third Gaia Data Release (DR3), the data collection spanned 34 months, with a median number of field-of-view measurements in the G band of about 44, reaching up to 270. At publication time, DR3 delivered the largest collection of variable sources with an associated classification across the entire sky. All these sources have their $G$, $G_{BP}$, $G_{RP}$ epoch data published and accessible in the Gaia ESA archive. In summary, there are 10.5 million variable sources, including 9.5 million variable stars and 1 million QSOs. Additionally, 2.5 million galaxies were identified thanks to spurious variability caused by the non-axisymmetric nature of galaxies and the way Gaia collects data. Moreover, all the epoch data and time series of nearly 1.3 million sources in a pencil beam around the Andromeda galaxy are published, regardless of their status (constant or variable); This dataset is known as the Gaia Andromeda Photometric Survey. We also introduce the citizen science project, GaiaVari to classify variable stars, the Focused Product Release delivered on October 10, 2023. 3. VELOcities of CEpheids (VELOCE) II. Systematic Search for Spectroscopic Binary Cepheids

Abstract: Classical Cepheids provide valuable insights into the evolution of stellar multiplicity among intermediate-mass stars. Here, we present a systematic investigation of single-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB1) based on high-precision velocities measured by the VELOcities of CEpheids (VELOCE) project. We detected 76 (29%) SB1 systems among the 258 Milky Way Cepheids in the first VELOCE data release, 32 (43%) of which were not previously known to be SB1 systems. We determined 30 precise and 3 tentative orbital solutions, 18 (53%) of which are reported for the first time. This large set of Cepheid orbits provides a detailed view of the eccentricity e and orbital period Porb distribution among evolved intermediate-mass stars, ranging from e=[0.0, 0.8] and Porb=[240, 9 000] d. Orbital motion on timescales exceeding the 11 yr VELOCE baseline was investigated using a template fitting technique applied to literature data. Particularly interesting objects include a) R Cru, the Cepheid with the shortest orbital period in the Milky Way (240 d), b) ASAS J103158-5814.7, a short-period overtone Cepheid exhibiting time-dependent pulsation amplitudes as well as orbital motion, c) 17 triple systems with outer visual companions, among other interesting objects. Most VELOCE Cepheids (21/23) that exhibit evidence for a companion based on Gaia proper motion anomaly are also spectroscopic binaries, whereas the remaining do not exhibit significant (> 3-sigma) orbital RV variations. Gaia quality flags, notably the Renormalized Unit Weight Error (RUWE), do not allow to reliably identify Cepheid binaries, although statistically the average RUWE of SB1 Cepheids is slightly higher than that of non-SB1 Cepheids. Comparison with Gaia photometric amplitudes in G, Bp, and Rp also does not allow to identify spectroscopic binaries among the full VELOCE sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Abstract: This first VELOCE data release comprises 18,225 high-precision RV measurements of 258 bona fide classical Cepheids on both hemispheres collected mainly between 2010 and 2022, alongside 1161 additional observations of 164 other stars. The median per-observation RV uncertainty is 0.037 km/s, and some reach 0.002 km/s. Non-variable standard stars characterize RV zero-point stability and provide a base for future cross-calibrations. We determined zero-point differences between VELOCE and 31 literature data sets using template fitting and measured linear period changes of 146 Cepheids. Seventy six spectroscopic binary Cepheids and 14 candidates are identified using VELOCE data alone and are investigated in detail in a companion paper (VELOCE II). Several new insights into Cepheid pulsations were obtained, including: a) the most detailed description of the Hertzsprung progression by RVs; b) the identification of double-peaked bumps in the RV curve; c) clear evidence that virtually all Cepheids feature spectroscopic variability signals that lead to modulated RV variability. We identified 36 such stars, of which 4 also exhibit orbital motion. Linear radius variations depend strongly on pulsation period and a steep increase in slope of the $\Delta$R/p versus logP-relation is found near 10d, challenging the existence of a tight relation between Baade-Wesselink projection factors and pulsation periods. We investigated the accuracy of RV time series measurements, v$_\gamma$, and RV amplitudes published in Gaia's DR3 and determined an average offset of 0.65 \pm 0.11 km/s relative to VELOCE. We recommend adopting a single set of template correlation parameters for distinct classes of large-amplitude variable stars to avoid systematic offsets in v$_\gamma$ among stars belonging to the same class. Abstract: The Gaia Collaboration has recently reported the detection of a 33 M$_\odot$ black hole in a wide binary system located in the Solar neighbourhood. Here we explore the relationship between this black hole, known as Gaia BH3, and the nearby ED-2 halo stellar stream. We study the orbital characteristics of the Gaia BH3 binary and present measurements of the chemical abundances of ED-2 member stars derived from high-resolution spectra obtained with the VLT. We find that the Galactic orbit of the Gaia BH3 system and its metallicity are entirely consistent with being part of the ED-2 stream. The characteristics of the stream, particularly its negligible spread in metallicity and in other chemical elements as well as its single stellar population, suggest that it originated from a disrupted star cluster of low mass. Its age is comparable to that of the globular cluster M92 that has been estimated to be as old as the Universe. This is the first black hole unambiguously associated with a disrupted star cluster. We infer a plausible mass range for the cluster to be relatively narrow, between $2\times 10^3M_\odot$ and $4.2\times 10^4M_\odot$. This implies that the black hole could have formed directly from the collapse of a massive very-metal-poor star, but that the alternative scenario of binary interactions inside the cluster environment also deserves to be explored., Comment: Submitted to A&A Letters; updated author list

Abstract: Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS) based on results from genome-wide association studies offer the prospect of risk stratification for many common and complex diseases. We developed a PRS for alcohol-associated cirrhosis by comparing single-nucleotide polymorphisms among patients with alcohol-associated cirrhosis (ALC) versus drinkers who did not have evidence of liver fibrosis/cirrhosis. METHODS: Using a data-driven approach, a PRS for ALC was generated using a meta-genome-wide association study of ALC (N=4305) and an independent cohort of heavy drinkers with ALC and without significant liver disease (N=3037). It was validated in 2 additional independent cohorts from the UK Biobank with diagnosed ALC (N=467) and high-risk drinking controls (N=8981) and participants in the Indiana Biobank Liver cohort with alcohol-associated liver disease (N=121) and controls without liver disease (N=3239). RESULTS: A 20-single-nucleotide polymorphisms PRS for ALC (PRSALC) was generated that stratified risk for ALC comparing the top and bottom deciles of PRS in the 2 validation cohorts (ORs: 2.83 [95% CI: 1.82 -4.39] in UK Biobank; 4.40 [1.56 -12.44] in Indiana Biobank Liver cohort). Furthermore, PRSALC improved the prediction of ALC risk when added to the models of clinically known predictors of ALC risk. It also stratified the risk for metabolic dysfunction -associated steatotic liver disease -cirrhosis (3.94 [2.23 -6.95]) in the Indiana Biobank Liver cohort -based exploratory analysis. CONCLUSIONS: PRSALC incorporates 20 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, predicts increased risk for ALC, and improves risk stratification for ALC compared with the models that only include clinical risk factors. This new score has the potential for early detection of heavy drinking patients who are at high risk for ALC.

Abstract: Policy Brief on "Long Term Space Data and Informatics Needs", distilled from the corresponding panel that was part of the discussions during S20 Policy Webinar on Astroinformatics for Sustainable Development held on 6-7 July 2023. Persistent space data gathering, retention, transmission, and analysis play a pivotal role in deepening our grasp of the Universe and fostering the achievement of global sustainable development goals. Long-term data storage and curation is crucial not only to make the wide range of burgeoning data sets available to the global science community, but also to stabilize those data sets, enabling new science in the future to analyse long-term trends over unprecedented time spans. In addition to this, over the long-term, the imperative to store all data on the ground should be ameliorated by use of space-based data stores --maintained and seen to be as reliable as any other data archive. This concept is sometimes referred to as Memory of the Sky. Storing the data must be accompanied by the ability to analyse them. Several concepts covered below acknowledge roots and inspiration based in the Virtual Observatory effort. Within this policy document, we delve into the complexities surrounding the long-term utilization of space data and informatics, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities inherent in this endeavour. 10. Low-mass Runaways from the Orion Nebula Cluster -- Kinematic Age Constraints on Star Cluster Formation

Abstract: In their early, formative stages star clusters can undergo rapid dynamical evolution leading to strong gravitational interactions and ejection of "runaway" stars at high velocities. While O/B runaway stars have been well studied, lower-mass runaways are so far very poorly characterised, even though they are expected to be much more common. We carried out spectroscopic observations with MAG2-MIKE to follow-up 27 high priority candidate runaways consistent with having been ejected from the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) > 2.5 Myr ago, based on Gaia astrometry. We derive spectroscopic youth indicators (Li & H${\alpha}$) and radial velocities, enabling detection of bona fide runaway stars via signatures of youth and 3D traceback. We successfully confirmed 11 of the candidates as low-mass Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) on the basis of our spectroscopic criteria and derived radial velocities (RVs) with which we performed 3D traceback analysis. Three of these confirmed YSOs have kinematic ejection ages > 4 Myr, with the oldest being 4.7 Myr. Assuming that these stars indeed formed in the ONC and were then ejected, this yields an estimate for the overall formation time of the ONC to be at least ${\sim}$ 5 Myr, i.e., about 10 free-fall times, and with a mean star formation efficiency per free-fall time of ${\bar{\epsilon}_{ff}} {\lesssim}$ 0.05. These results favor a scenario of slow, quasi-equilibrium star cluster formation, regulated by magnetic fields and/or protostellar outflow feedback., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: Policy Brief on "AstroInformatics, Recommendations for Global Collaboration", distilled from panel discussions during S20 Policy Webinar on Astroinformatics for Sustainable Development held on 6-7 July 2023. The deliberations encompassed a wide array of topics, including broad astroinformatics, sky surveys, large-scale international initiatives, global data repositories, space-related data, regional and international collaborative efforts, as well as workforce development within the field. These discussions comprehensively addressed the current status, notable achievements, and the manifold challenges that the field of astroinformatics currently confronts. The G20 nations present a unique opportunity due to their abundant human and technological capabilities, coupled with their widespread geographical representation. Leveraging these strengths, significant strides can be made in various domains. These include, but are not limited to, the advancement of STEM education and workforce development, the promotion of equitable resource utilization, and contributions to fields such as Earth Science and Climate Science. We present a concise overview, followed by specific recommendations that pertain to both ground-based and space data initiatives. Our team remains readily available to furnish further elaboration on any of these proposals as required. Furthermore, we anticipate further engagement during the upcoming G20 presidencies in Brazil (2024) and South Africa (2025) to ensure the continued discussion and realization of these objectives. 13. Investigating the Long Secondary Period Phenomenon with the ASAS-SN and Gaia data

Abstract: The aim of this work is to create a complete list of sources exhibiting a long secondary period (LSP) in the ASAS-SN catalog of variable stars, and analyze the properties of this sample compared to other long period variables without LSP. We use the period-amplitude diagram to identify the 55572 stars showing an LSP, corresponding to 27% of the pulsating red giants in the catalog. We use the astrometric data from Gaia DR3 and the spectroscopic data provided by the APOGEE, GALAH, and RAVE surveys to investigate the statistical properties of the sample. We find that stars displaying an LSP have a spatial distribution that is more dispersed than the non-LSP giants, suggesting that they belong to an older population. Spectroscopically-derived ages seem to confirm this. The stars with an LSP also appear to be different in terms of C/O ratio from their non-LSP counterparts., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Abstract: Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Abstract: Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Abstract: The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. 19. Small amplitude red giants elucidate the nature of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch as a standard candle

Abstract: The tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) is an important standard candle for determining luminosity distances. Although several $10^5$ small amplitude red giant stars (SARGs) have been discovered, variability was previously considered irrelevant for the TRGB as a standard candle. Here, we show that all stars near the TRGB are SARGs that follow several period-luminosity sequences, of which sequence A is younger than sequence B as predicted by stellar evolution. We measure apparent TRGB magnitudes, m$_{\mathrm{TRGB}}$, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using Sobel filters applied to photometry from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment and the ESA Gaia mission, and we identify several weaknesses in a recent LMC-based TRGB calibration used to measure the Hubble constant. We consider four samples: all Red Giants (RGs), SARGs, and sequences A & B. The B-sequence is best suited for measuring distances to old RG populations, with M$_{\mathrm{F814W,0}}$ = -4.025 $\pm$ 0.014(stat.) $\pm$ 0.033(syst.) mag assuming the LMC's geometric distance. Control of systematics is demonstrated using detailed simulations. Population diversity affects m$_{\mathrm{TRGB}}$ at a level exceeding the stated precision: the SARG and A-sequence samples yield 0.039 mag and 0.085 mag fainter (at 5{\sigma} significance) m$_{\mathrm{TRGB}}$ values, respectively. Ensuring equivalent RG populations is crucial to measuring accurate TRGB distances. Additionally, luminosity function smoothing ($\sim$ 0.02 mag) and edge detection response weighting (as much as -0.06 mag) can further bias TRGB measurements, with the latter introducing a tip-contrast relation. Abstract: Context: Gaia DR3 time series data may contain spurious signals related to the time-dependent scan angle. Aims: We aim to explain the origin of scan-angle dependent signals and how they can lead to spurious periods, provide statistics to identify them in the data, and suggest how to deal with them in Gaia DR3 data and in future releases. Methods: Using real Gaia data, alongside numerical and analytical models, we visualise and explain the features observed in the data. Results: We demonstrated with Gaia data that source structure (multiplicity or extendedness) or pollution from close-by bright objects can cause biases in the image parameter determination from which photometric, astrometric and (indirectly) radial velocity time series are derived. These biases are a function of the time-dependent scan direction of the instrument and thus can introduce scan-angle dependent signals, which in turn can result in specific spurious periodic signals. Numerical simulations qualitatively reproduce the general structure observed in the spurious period and spatial distribution of photometry and astrometry. A variety of statistics allows for identification of affected sources. Conclusions: The origin of the scan-angle dependent signals and subsequent spurious periods is well-understood and is in majority caused by fixed-orientation optical pairs with separation <0.5" (amongst which binaries with P>>5y) and (cores of) distant galaxies. Though the majority of sources with affected derived parameters have been filtered out from the Gaia archive, there remain Gaia DR3 data that should be treated with care (e.g. gaia_source was untouched). Abstract: Gaia DR3 contains 1.8 billion sources with G-band photometry, 1.5 billion of which with BP and RP photometry, complemented by positions on the sky, parallax, and proper motion. The median number of field-of-view transits in the three photometric bands is between 40 and 44 measurements per source and covers 34 months of data collection. We pursue a classification of Galactic and extra-galactic objects that are detected as variable by Gaia across the whole sky. Supervised machine learning (eXtreme Gradient Boosting and Random Forest) was employed to generate multi-class, binary, and meta-classifiers that classified variable objects with photometric time series in the G, BP, and RP bands. Classification results comprise 12.4 million sources (selected from a much larger set of potential variable objects) and include about 9 million variable stars classified into 22 variability types in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies such as the Magellanic Clouds and Andromeda, plus thousands of supernova explosions in distant galaxies, 1 million active galactic nuclei, and almost 2.5 million galaxies. The identification of galaxies was made possible by the artificial variability of extended objects as detected by Gaia, so they were published in the galaxy_candidates table of the Gaia DR3 archive, separate from the classifications of genuine variability (in the vari_classifier_result table). The latter contains 24 variability classes or class groups of periodic and non-periodic variables (pulsating, eclipsing, rotating, eruptive, cataclysmic, stochastic, and microlensing), with amplitudes from a few milli-magnitudes to several magnitudes., Comment: 106 pages, 513 figure panels, 4 tables. Abstract: We present the first Gaia catalogue of eclipsing binary candidates released in Gaia DR3, describe its content, provide tips for its usage, estimate its quality, and show illustrative samples. The catalogue contains 2,184,477 sources with G magnitudes up to 20 mag. Candidate selection is based on the results of variable object classification performed within the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium, further filtered using eclipsing binary-tailored criteria based on the G light curves. To find the orbital period, a large ensemble of trial periods is first acquired using three distinct period search methods applied to the cleaned G light curve. The G light curve is then modelled with up-to two Gaussians and a cosine for each trial period. The best combination of orbital period and geometric model is finally selected using Bayesian model comparison based on the BIC. A global ranking metric is provided to rank the quality of the chosen model between sources. The catalogue is restricted to orbital periods larger than 0.2 days. About 530,000 of the candidates are classified as eclipsing binaries in the literature as well, out of ~600,000 available crossmatches, and 93% of them have published periods compatible with the Gaia periods. Catalogue completeness is estimated to be between 25% and 50%, depending on the sky region, relative to the OGLE4 catalogues of eclipsing binaries towards the Galactic Bulge and the Magellanic Clouds. The analysis of an illustrative sample of ~400,000 candidates with significant parallaxes shows properties in the observational HR diagram as expected for eclipsing binaries. The subsequent analysis of a sub-sample of detached bright candidates provides further hints for the exploitation of the catalogue. Abstract: Context: The TESS team periodically issues a new list of transiting exoplanet candidates based on the analysis of the accumulating light curves obtained by the satellite. The list includes the estimated epochs, periods, and durations of the potential transits. As the point spread function (PSF) of TESS is relatively wide, follow-up photometric observations at higher spatial resolution are required in order to exclude apparent transits that are actually blended background eclipsing binaries (BEBs). Aims: The Gaia space mission, with its growing database of epoch photometry and high angular resolution, enables the production of distinct light curves for all sources included in the TESS PSF, up to the limiting magnitude of Gaia. This paper reports the results of an ongoing Gaia-TESS collaboration that uses the Gaia photometry to facilitate the identification of BEB candidates and even to confirm on-target candidates in some cases. Methods: We inspected the Gaia photometry of the individual sources included in the TESS PSF, searching for periodic dimming events compatible with their ephemerides and uncertainties, as published by TESS. The performance of the search depends mainly on the number of Gaia measurements during transit and their precision. Results: Since February 2021, the collaboration has been able to confirm 126 on-target candidates and exclude 124 as BEBs. Since June 2021, when our search methodology matured, we have been able to identify on the order of 5% as on-target candidates and another 5% as BEBs. Conclusions: This synergistic approach is combining the complementary capabilities of two of the astronomical space missions of NASA and ESA. Abstract: We present the third data release of the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, GDR3. The GDR3 catalogue is the outcome of the processing of raw data collected with the Gaia instruments during the first 34 months of the mission by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. The GDR3 catalogue contains the same source list, celestial positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and broad band photometry in the G, G$_{BP}$, and G$_{RP}$ pass-bands already present in the Early Third Data Release. Abstract: One of the novelties of the Gaia-DR3 with respect to the previous data releases is the publication of the multiband light curves of about 1 million AGN. The goal of this work was the creation of a catalogue of variable AGN, whose selection was based on Gaia data only. We first present the implementation of the methods to estimate the variability parameters into a specific object study module for AGN. Then we describe the selection procedure that led to the definition of the high-purity variable AGN sample and analyse the properties of the selected sources. We started from a sample of millions of sources, which were identified as AGN candidates by 11 different classifiers based on variability processing. Because the focus was on the variability properties, we first defined some pre-requisites in terms of number of data points and mandatory variability parameters. Then a series of filters was applied using only Gaia data and the Gaia Celestial Reference Frame 3 (Gaia-CRF3) sample as a reference.The resulting Gaia AGN variable sample, named GLEAN, contains about 872000 objects, more than 21000 of which are new identifications. We checked the presence of contaminants by cross-matching the selected sources with a variety of galaxies and stellar catalogues. The completeness of GLEAN with respect to the variable AGN in the last Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalogue is about 47%, while that based on the variable AGN of the Gaia-CRF3 sample is around 51%. From both a comparison with other AGN catalogues and an investigation of possible contaminants, we conclude that purity can be expected to be above 95%. Multiwavelength properties of these sources are investigated. In particular, we estimate that about 4% of them are radio-loud. We finally explore the possibility to evaluate the time lags between the flux variations of the multiple images of strongly lensed quasars, and show one case., Comment: 19 pages, 31 figures, 2 table. Abstract: Context. In the current ever increasing data volumes of astronomical surveys, automated methods are essential. Objects of known classes from the literature are necessary for training supervised machine learning algorithms, as well as for verification/validation of their results. Aims.The primary goal of this work is to provide a comprehensive data set of known variable objects from the literature cross-matched with \textit{Gaia}~DR3 sources, including a large number of both variability types and representatives, in order to cover as much as possible sky regions and magnitude ranges relevant to each class. In addition, non-variable objects from selected surveys are targeted to probe their variability in \textit{Gaia} and possible use as standards. This data set can be the base for a training set applicable in variability detection, classification, and validation. MethodsA statistical method that employed both astrometry (position and proper motion) and photometry (mean magnitude) was applied to selected literature catalogues in order to identify the correct counterparts of the known objects in the \textit{Gaia} data. The cross-match strategy was adapted to the properties of each catalogue and the verification of results excluded dubious matches. Results.Our catalogue gathers 7\,841\,723 \textit{Gaia} sources among which 1.2~million non-variable objects and 1.7~million galaxies, in addition to 4.9~million variable sources representing over 100~variability (sub)types. Conclusions.This data set served the requirements of \textit{Gaia}'s variability pipeline for its third data release (DR3), from classifier training to result validation, and it is expected to be a useful resource for the scientific community that is interested in the analysis of variability in the \textit{Gaia} data and other surveys., Comment: This paper is part of Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3). Abstract: The Gaia mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) has been routinely observing Solar System objects (SSOs) since the beginning of its operations in August 2014. The Gaia data release three (DR3) includes, for the first time, the mean reflectance spectra of a selected sample of 60 518 SSOs, primarily asteroids, observed between August 5, 2014, and May 28, 2017. Each reflectance spectrum was derived from measurements obtained by means of the Blue and Red photometers (BP/RP), which were binned in 16 discrete wavelength bands. We describe the processing of the Gaia spectral data of SSOs, explaining both the criteria used to select the subset of asteroid spectra published in Gaia DR3, and the different steps of our internal validation procedures. In order to further assess the quality of Gaia SSO reflectance spectra, we carried out external validation against SSO reflectance spectra obtained from ground-based and space-borne telescopes and available in the literature. For each selected SSO, an epoch reflectance was computed by dividing the calibrated spectrum observed by the BP/RP at each transit on the focal plane by the mean spectrum of a solar analogue. The latter was obtained by averaging the Gaia spectral measurements of a selected sample of stars known to have very similar spectra to that of the Sun. Finally, a mean of the epoch reflectance spectra was calculated in 16 spectral bands for each SSO. The agreement between Gaia mean reflectance spectra and those available in the literature is good for bright SSOs, regardless of their taxonomic spectral class. We identify an increase in the spectral slope of S-type SSOs with increasing phase angle. Moreover, we show that the spectral slope increases and the depth of the 1 um absorption band decreases for increasing ages of S-type asteroid families., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract: Context. Gaia has been in operations since 2014. The third Gaia data release expands from the early data release (EDR3) in 2020 by providing 34 months of multi-epoch observations that allowed us to probe, characterise and classify systematically celestial variable phenomena. Aims. We present a summary of the variability processing and analysis of the photometric and spectroscopic time series of 1.8 billion sources done for Gaia DR3. Methods. We used statistical and Machine Learning methods to characterise and classify the variable sources. Training sets were built from a global revision of major published variable star catalogues. For a subset of classes, specific detailed studies were conducted to confirm their class membership and to derive parameters that are adapted to the peculiarity of the considered class. Results. In total, 10.5 million objects are identified as variable in Gaia DR3 and have associated time series in G, GBP, and GRP and, in some cases, radial velocity time series. The DR3 variable sources subdivide into 9.5 million variable stars and 1 million Active Galactic Nuclei/Quasars. In addition, supervised classification identified 2.5 million galaxies thanks to spurious variability induced by the extent of these objects. The variability analysis output in the DR3 archive amounts to 17 tables containing a total of 365 parameters. We publish 35 types and sub-types of variable objects. For 11 variable types, additional specific object parameters are published. An overview of the estimated completeness and contamination of most variability classes is provided. Conclusions. Thanks to Gaia we present the largest whole-sky variability analysis based on coherent photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic data. Abstract: Gaia DR3 publishes a catalogue of full-sky RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) observed during the initial 34 months of science operations, that were processed through the Specific Object Study (SOS) pipeline for Cepheids and RRLs (SOS Cep&RRL) observed by Gaia. The SOS Cep&RRL validation of DR3 candidate RRLs relies on tools that include the Period (P) G-amplitude diagram and the P-phi21 and -phi31 parameters of the G light curve Fourier decomposition, based on a sample of bona fide known RRLs (Gold Sample). The SOS processing led to a catalogue of 271779 RRLs listed in the vari_rrlyrae table of DR3. By dropping sources that clearly are contaminants, or have an uncertain classification we produce the final catalogue of SOS-confirmed DR3 RRLs containing 270905 sources (174947 fundamental mode, 93952 first overtone and 2006 double-mode RRLs) confirmed and fully characterised by the SOS Cep&RRL pipeline. They are distributed all over the sky, including 95 globular clusters and 25 Milky Way companions. RVS time series radial velocities are also published for 1096 RRLs and 799 Cepheids. Of the 270905 DR3 RRLs, 200294 are already known in the literature and 70611 are, to the best of our knowledge, new discoveries by Gaia. An estimate of the interstellar absorption is published for 142660 fundamental-mode RRLs from a relation based on the G-band amplitude and the pulsation period. Metallicities derived from the Periods and the phi31 Fourier parameters of the G-light curves are also released for 133559 RRLs. The final Gaia DR3 catalogue of confirmed RRLs almost doubles the DR2 RRLs catalogue. An increase of statistical significance, a better characterization of the RRLs pulsational and astrophysical parameters, and the improved astrometry published with Gaia EDR3, make the SOS Cep&RRL DR3 sample, the largest, most homogeneous and parameter-rich catalogue of All-Sky RRLs published so far., Comment: 42 pages, 36 figures, submitted to A&A, revised version after the referee report

Abstract: Context. Cepheids are pulsating stars that play a crucial role in several astrophysical contexts. Among the different types, the Classical Cepheids are fundamental tools for the calibration of the extragalactic distance ladder. They are also powerful stellar population tracers in the context of Galactic studies. The Gaia Third Data Release (DR3) publishes improved data on Cepheids collected during the initial 34 months of operations. Aims. We present the Gaia DR3 catalogue of Cepheids of all types, obtained through the analysis carried out with the Specific Object Study (SOS) Cep&RRL pipeline. Methods. We discuss the procedures adopted to clean the Cepheid sample from spurious objects, to validate the results, and to re-classify sources with a wrong outcome from the SOS Cep&RRL pipeline. Results. The Gaia DR3 includes multi-band time-series photometry and characterisation by the SOS Cep&RRL pipeline for a sample of 15,006 Cepheids of all types. The sample includes 4,663, 4,616, 321 and 185 pulsators, distributed in the LMC, SMC, M31 and M33, respectively, as well as 5 221 objects in the remaining All Sky sub-region which includes stars in the MW field/clusters and in a number of small satellites of our Galaxy. Among this sample, 327 objects were known as variable stars in the literature but with a different classification, while, to the best of our knowledge, 474 stars have not been reported before to be variable stars and therefore they likely are new Cepheids discovered by Gaia., Comment: This manuscript is one of the official papers planned to accompany Gaia DR3 in a special issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics. Abstract: With the most recent Gaia data release the number of sources with complete 6D phase space information (position and velocity) has increased to well over 33 million stars, while stellar astrophysical parameters are provided for more than 470 million sources, in addition to the identification of over 11 million variable stars. Using the astrophysical parameters and variability classifications provided in Gaia DR3, we select various stellar populations to explore and identify non-axisymmetric features in the disc of the Milky Way in both configuration and velocity space. Using more about 580 thousand sources identified as hot OB stars, together with 988 known open clusters younger than 100 million years, we map the spiral structure associated with star formation 4-5 kpc from the Sun. We select over 2800 Classical Cepheids younger than 200 million years, which show spiral features extending as far as 10 kpc from the Sun in the outer disc. We also identify more than 8.7 million sources on the red giant branch (RGB), of which 5.7 million have line-of-sight velocities, allowing the velocity field of the Milky Way to be mapped as far as 8 kpc from the Sun, including the inner disc. The spiral structure revealed by the young populations is consistent with recent results using Gaia EDR3 astrometry and source lists based on near infrared photometry, showing the Local (Orion) arm to be at least 8 kpc long, and an outer arm consistent with what is seen in HI surveys, which seems to be a continuation of the Perseus arm into the third quadrant. Meanwhile, the subset of RGB stars with velocities clearly reveals the large scale kinematic signature of the bar in the inner disc, as well as evidence of streaming motions in the outer disc that might be associated with spiral arms or bar resonances. Abstract: Context: One of the rarest types of variability is the phenomenon of gravitational microlensing, a transient brightening of a background star due to an intervening lensing object. Microlensing is a powerful tool in studying the invisible or otherwise undetectable populations in the Milky Way, including planets and black holes. Aims: We describe the first Gaia catalogue of microlensing event candidates, give an overview of its content and discuss its validation. Methods: The catalogue of Gaia microlensing events is composed by analysing the light curves of around 2 billion sources of Gaia Data Release 3 from all over the sky covering 34 months between 2014 and 2017. Results: We present 363 Gaia microlensing events and discuss their properties. Ninety events were never reported before and were not discovered by other surveys. Abstract: The third Gaia data release provides photometric time series covering 34 months for about 10 million stars. For many of those stars, a characterisation in Fourier space and their variability classification are also provided. This paper focuses on intermediate- to high-mass (IHM) main sequence pulsators M >= 1.3 Msun) of spectral types O, B, A, or F, known as beta Cep, slowly pulsating B (SPB), delta Sct, and gamma Dor stars. These stars are often multi-periodic and display low amplitudes, making them challenging targets to analyse with sparse time series. All datasets used in this analysis are part of the Gaia DR3 data release. The photometric time series were used to perform a Fourier analysis, while the global astrophysical parameters necessary for the empirical instability strips were taken from the Gaia DR3 gspphot tables, and the vsini data were taken from the Gaia DR3 esphs tables. We show that for nearby OBAF-type pulsators, the Gaia DR3 data are precise and accurate enough to pinpoint them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We find empirical instability strips covering broader regions than theoretically predicted. In particular, our study reveals the presence of fast rotating gravity-mode pulsators outside the strips, as well as the co-existence of rotationally modulated variables inside the strips as reported before in the literature. We derive an extensive period-luminosity relation for delta Sct stars and provide evidence that the relation features different regimes depending on the oscillation period. Finally, we demonstrate how stellar rotation attenuates the amplitude of the dominant oscillation mode of delta Sct stars.

Abstract: As part of Gaia Data Release 3, supervised classification identified a large number of ellipsoidal variables, for which the periodic variability is presumably induced by tidal interaction with a companion in a close binary system. In this paper, we present 6306 short-period probable ellipsoidal variables with relatively large-amplitude Gaia G-band photometric modulations, indicating a possible massive, unseen secondary. In case of a main-sequence primary, the more massive secondary is probably a compact object -- either a black hole or a neutron star, and sometimes a white dwarf. The identification is based on a robust modified minimum mass ratio (mMMR) suggested recently by Gomel, Faigler and Mazeh (2021), derived from the observed ellipsoidal amplitude only, without the use of the primary mass or radius. We also list a subset of 262 systems with mMMR larger than unity, for which the compact-secondary probability is higher. Abstract: Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products for the astronomical community to exploit, including astrophysical parameters for a half billion stars. In this work we demonstrate the high quality of these data products and illustrate their use in different astrophysical contexts. We query the astrophysical parameter tables along with other tables in Gaia DR3 to derive the samples of the stars of interest. We validate our results by using the Gaia catalogue itself and by comparison with external data. We have produced six homogeneous samples of stars with high quality astrophysical parameters across the HR diagram for the community to exploit. We first focus on three samples that span a large parameter space: young massive disk stars (~3M), FGKM spectral type stars (~3M), and UCDs (~20K). We provide these sources along with additional information (either a flag or complementary parameters) as tables that are made available in the Gaia archive. We furthermore identify 15740 bone fide carbon stars, 5863 solar-analogues, and provide the first homogeneous set of stellar parameters of the Spectro Photometric Standard Stars. We use a subset of the OBA sample to illustrate its usefulness to analyse the Milky Way rotation curve. We then use the properties of the FGKM stars to analyse known exoplanet systems. We also analyse the ages of some unseen UCD-companions to the FGKM stars. Abstract: Context. The Gaia third Data Release (DR3) presents the first catalogue of full-sky variable Young Stellar Object (YSO) candidates observed by the Gaia space telescope during the initial 34 months of science operations. Aims. Numerous types of variable stars were classified using photometric data collected by Gaia. One of the new classes presented in the Gaia DR3 is the class of YSOs showing brightness variability. We analysed 79 375 sources classified as YSO candidates to validate their young nature and investigate the completeness and purity of the sample. Methods. We cross-matched the Gaia DR3 YSO sample with numerous catalogues from the literature, including YSO catalogues based on optical and infrared data, as well as catalogues of extragalactic sources and Galactic variable stars. YSO catalogues were used to quantify the completeness of the Gaia DR3 YSO sample, while others were inspected to calculate the contamination. Results. Among the 79 375 potential Young Stellar Object candidates published in the Gaia DR3 variable star catalogue, the majority of these objects are distributed along the line of sight of well-known Star Forming Regions and the Galactic mid-plane. We found that the contamination level is well below 1%, while the completeness is also at the percent level, taking into account that the Gaia DR3 YSO sample is based on sources that showed significant variability during the data collection period. Abstract: The third Gaia Data Release, covering 34 months of data, includes the second Gaia catalogue of long-period variables (LPVs), with G variability amplitudes larger than 0.1 mag (5-95% quantile range). The paper describes the production and content of this catalogue, and the methods used to compute the published variability parameters and identify C-star candidates. We applied various filtering criteria to minimise contamination by other kinds of variables. The variability parameters, period and amplitude, were derived from model fits to the G-band light curves, wherever possible. C stars were identified using their molecular signature in the low-resolution RP spectra. The catalogue contains 1 720 558 LPV candidates, including 392 240 stars with published periods (ranging from 35 to1000 days) and 546 468 stars classified as C-stars candidates. Comparison with literature data (OGLE and ASAS-SN) leads to an estimated 80% of completeness. The recovery rate is about 90% for the most regular stars (typically Miras) and 60% for semi-regular and irregular ones. At the same time, the number of known LPVs is increased by a large factor with respect to the literature data, especially in crowded regions, and the contamination is estimated to be below two percents. Our C-star classification, based on solid theoretical arguments, is consistent with spectroscopically identified C stars in the literature. Caution must however be taken if the S/N ratio is small, in crowded regions or if the source is reddened by some kind of extinction. The quality and potential of the catalogue are illustrated by presenting and discussing LPVs in the solar neighbourhood, in globular clusters and in galaxies of the Local Group. This is the largest all-sky catalogue of LPVs to date with a photometric depth down to G=20 mag, providing a unique data set for research on late stages of stellar evolution., Comment: This paper is part of Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3). Abstract: The Gaia Galactic survey mission is designed and optimized to obtain astrometry, photometry, and spectroscopy of nearly two billion stars in our Galaxy. Yet as an all-sky multi-epoch survey, Gaia also observes several million extragalactic objects down to a magnitude of G~21 mag. Due to the nature of the Gaia onboard selection algorithms, these are mostly point-source-like objects. Using data provided by the satellite, we have identified quasar and galaxy candidates via supervised machine learning methods, and estimate their redshifts using the low resolution BP/RP spectra. We further characterise the surface brightness profiles of host galaxies of quasars and of galaxies from pre-defined input lists. Here we give an overview of the processing of extragalactic objects, describe the data products in Gaia DR3, and analyse their properties. Two integrated tables contain the main results for a high completeness, but low purity (50-70%), set of 6.6 million candidate quasars and 4.8 million candidate galaxies. We provide queries that select purer sub-samples of these containing 1.9 million probable quasars and 2.9 million probable galaxies (both 95% purity). We also use high quality BP/RP spectra of 43 thousand high probability quasars over the redshift range 0.05-4.36 to construct a composite quasar spectrum spanning restframe wavelengths from 72-100 nm., Comment: Accepted to A&A

Abstract: The Gaia DR3 Catalogue contains for the first time about eight hundred thousand solutions with either orbital elements or trend parameters for astrometric, spectroscopic and eclipsing binaries, and combinations of them. This paper aims to illustrate the huge potential of this large non-single star catalogue. Using the orbital solutions together with models of the binaries, a catalogue of tens of thousands of stellar masses, or lower limits, partly together with consistent flux ratios, has been built. Properties concerning the completeness of the binary catalogues are discussed, statistical features of the orbital elements are explained and a comparison with other catalogues is performed. Illustrative applications are proposed for binaries across the H-R diagram. The binarity is studied in the RGB/AGB and a search for genuine SB1 among long-period variables is performed. The discovery of new EL CVn systems illustrates the potential of combining variability and binarity catalogues. Potential compact object companions are presented, mainly white dwarf companions or double degenerates, but one candidate neutron star is also presented. Towards the bottom of the main sequence, the orbits of previously-suspected binary ultracool dwarfs are determined and new candidate binaries are discovered. The long awaited contribution of Gaia to the analysis of the substellar regime shows the brown dwarf desert around solar-type stars using true, rather than minimum, masses, and provides new important constraints on the occurrence rates of substellar companions to M dwarfs. Several dozen new exoplanets are proposed, including two with validated orbital solutions and one super-Jupiter orbiting a white dwarf, all being candidates requiring confirmation. Abstract: Context. As part of Gaia Data Release 3 (Gaia DR3), epoch photometry has been released for 1.2 million sources centred on M31. This is a taster for Gaia Data Release 4 where all the epoch photometry will be released. Aims. In this paper the content of the Gaia Andromeda Photometric Survey is described, including statistics to assess the quality of the data. Known issues with the photometry are also outlined. Methods. Methods are given to improve interpretation of the photometry, in particular, a method for error renormalization. Also, use of correlations between the three photometric passbands allows clearer identification of variables that is not affected by false detections caused by systematic effects. Results. The Gaia Andromeda Photometric Survey presents a unique opportunity to look at Gaia epoch photometry that has not been preselected due to variability. This allows investigations to be carried out that can be applied to the rest of the sky using the mean source results. Abstract: Gaia DR3 opens a new era of all-sky spectral analysis of stellar populations thanks to the nearly 5.6 million stars observed by the RVS and parametrised by the GSP-spec module. The all-sky Gaia chemical cartography allows a powerful and precise chemo-dynamical view of the Milky Way with unprecedented spatial coverage and statistical robustness. First, it reveals the strong vertical symmetry of the Galaxy and the flared structure of the disc. Second, the observed kinematic disturbances of the disc -- seen as phase space correlations -- and kinematic or orbital substructures are associated with chemical patterns that favour stars with enhanced metallicities and lower [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios compared to the median values in the radial distributions. This is detected both for young objects that trace the spiral arms and older populations. Several alpha, iron-peak elements and at least one heavy element trace the thin and thick disc properties in the solar cylinder. Third, young disc stars show a recent chemical impoverishment in several elements. Fourth, the largest chemo-dynamical sample of open clusters analysed so far shows a steepening of the radial metallicity gradient with age, which is also observed in the young field population. Finally, the Gaia chemical data have the required coverage and precision to unveil galaxy accretion debris and heated disc stars on halo orbits through their [alpha/Fe] ratio, and to allow the study of the chemo-dynamical properties of globular clusters. Gaia DR3 chemo-dynamical diagnostics open new horizons before the era of ground-based wide-field spectroscopic surveys. Abstract: The Gaia third Data Release (DR3) presents a catalogue of 474\,026 stars with variability induced by magnetic activity. For each star, the catalogue provides a list of about 70 parameters among which the most important are the stellar rotation period $P$, the photometric amplitude $A$ of the rotational signal and the Pearson Correlation Coefficient $r_0$ between brightness and magnitude variations. The Specific Objects Study (SOS) pipeline, developed to characterise magnetically active stars with Gaia Data, has been described in the paper accompanying the Gaia second Data Release. Here we describe the changes made to the pipeline and a new method developed to analyze Gaia time-series and to reveal spurious signals induced by instrumental effects or by the peculiar nature of the investigated stellar source. The period-amplitude diagram obtained with the DR3 data confirms the bimodal distribution of fast rotating stars seen in the DR2 release. The DR3 data permitted, for the first time, to analyze the patterns of magnitude-color variations for thousands of magnetically active stars. The measured $r_0$ values are tightly correlated with the stars position in the period-amplitude diagram. The relationship between the $P$, $A$ and $r_0$ parameters inferred for thousands of stars could be very useful to improve the understanding of stellar magnetic fields and to improve theoretical models. Abstract: BackgroundHigh alcohol intake is associated with increased mortality. We aimed to identify factors affecting mortality in people drinking extreme amounts of alcohol.MethodsWe obtained information from the UK Biobank on approximately 500,000 participants aged 40-70 years at baseline assessment in 2006-2010. Habitual alcohol intake, lifestyle and physiological data, laboratory test results, and hospital diagnoses and death certificate data (to June 2020) for 5136 men (2.20% of male participants) and 1504 women (0.60%) who reported consuming ≥80 or ≥50 g/day, respectively, were used in survival analysis.ResultsMortality hazard ratios for these excessive drinkers, compared to all other participants, were 2.02 (95% CI 1.89-2.17) for all causes, 1.89 (1.69-2.12) for any cancer, 1.87 (1.61-2.17) for any circulatory disease, and 9.40 (7.00-12.64) for any liver disease. Liver disease diagnosis or abnormal liver function tests predicted not only deaths attributed to liver disease but also those from cancers or circulatory diseases. Mortality among excessive drinkers was also associated with quantitative alcohol intake; diagnosed alcohol dependence, harmful use, or withdrawal syndrome; and current smoking at assessment.ConclusionsPeople with chronic excessive alcohol intake experience decreased average survival, but there is substantial variation in their mortality, with liver abnormality and alcohol dependence or other alcohol use disorders associated with a worse prognosis. Clinically, patients with these risk factors and high alcohol intake should be considered for early or intensive management. Research can usefully focus on the factors predisposing to dependence or liver abnormality.

Abstract: Context: The space telescope Gaia is dedicated mainly to performing high-precision astrometry, but also spectroscopy and epoch photometry which can be used to study various types of photometric variability. One such variability type is exoplanetary transits. The photometric data accumulated so far have finally matured enough to allow the detection of some exoplanets. Aims: In order to fully exploit the scientific potential of Gaia, we search its photometric data for the signatures of exoplanetary transits. Methods: The search relies on a version of the Box-Least-Square (BLS) method, applied to a set of stars prioritized by machine-learning classification methods. An independent photometric validation was obtained using the public full-frame images of TESS. In order to validate the first two candidates, radial-velocity follow-up observations were performed using the spectrograph PEPSI of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Results: The radial-velocity measurements confirm that two of the candidates are indeed hot Jupiters. Thus, they are the first exoplanets detected by Gaia - Gaia-1b and Gaia-2b. Conclusions: Gaia-1b and Gaia-2b demonstrate that the approach presented in this paper is indeed effective. This approach will be used to assemble a set of additional exoplanet candidates, to be released in Gaia third data release, ensuring better fulfillment of the exoplanet detection potential of Gaia., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 8 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: Gaia-CRF3 is the celestial reference frame for positions and proper motions in the third release of data from the Gaia mission, Gaia DR3 (and for the early third release, Gaia EDR3, which contains identical astrometric results). The reference frame is defined by the positions and proper motions at epoch 2016.0 for a specific set of extragalactic sources in the (E)DR3 catalogue. We describe the construction of Gaia-CRF3, and its properties in terms of the distributions in magnitude, colour, and astrometric quality. Compact extragalactic sources in Gaia DR3 were identified by positional cross-matching with 17 external catalogues of quasars (QSO) and active galactic nuclei (AGN), followed by astrometric filtering designed to remove stellar contaminants. Selecting a clean sample was favoured over including a higher number of extragalactic sources. For the final sample, the random and systematic errors in the proper motions are analysed, as well as the radio-optical offsets in position for sources in the third realisation of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF3). The Gaia-CRF3 comprises about 1.6 million QSO-like sources, of which 1.2 million have five-parameter astrometric solutions in Gaia DR3 and 0.4 million have six-parameter solutions. The sources span the magnitude range G = 13 to 21 with a peak density at 20.6 mag, at which the typical positional uncertainty is about 1 mas. The proper motions show systematic errors on the level of 12 ${\mu}$as yr${}^{-1}$ on angular scales greater than 15 deg. For the 3142 optical counterparts of ICRF3 sources in the S/X frequency bands, the median offset from the radio positions is about 0.5 mas, but exceeds 4 mas in either coordinate for 127 sources. We outline the future of the Gaia-CRF in the next Gaia data releases.

47. Bridging the Gap Between Practice Guidelines and the Therapy Room: Community-Derived Practice Adaptations for Psychological Services with Transgender and Gender Diverse Adults in the Central United States.

Abstract: Individuals who identify as transgender or gender diverse (TGD) are presenting at mental health clinicians offices with increasing frequency. Many TGD clients are seeking care related to affirming their gender identity but also may present with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, or other problems for which a clinician may commonly provide services. Some clinicians may hesitate to accept TGD clients into their practice if they have little specialized training to work with this population in an affirming manner, especially in more underserved areas where a generalist practice is the norm. Numerous professional associations and experts have developed guidelines for affirmative behavioral health care for TGD people. However, what is needed are community informed recommendations to bridge from the official guidelines to clinicians in-session activities. The Trans Collaborations Practice Adaptations for Psychological Interventions for Transgender and Gender Diverse Adults are derived from iterative interviews with TGD community members and affirming mental health clinicians in the Central United States. The 12 practice adaptations are intended to guide clinicians to adapt their usual treatment approach to be TGD affirming, especially in underserved and rural areas. The practice adaptations cover numerous aspects of practice including the office setting and paperwork, understanding gender identity and incorporating it into the case conceptualization, therapists self-awareness, and referrals. The Trans Collaborations Practice Adaptations will help clinicians work confidently and competently with adult TGD clients, regardless of the presenting problem, to ensure TGD communities receive the best interventions for their behavioral health concerns.

Abstract: Since July 2014, the Gaia mission has been engaged in a high-spatial-resolution, time-resolved, precise, accurate astrometric, and photometric survey of the entire sky. Aims: We present the Gaia Science Alerts project, which has been in operation since 1 June 2016. We describe the system which has been developed to enable the discovery and publication of transient photometric events as seen by Gaia. Methods: We outline the data handling, timings, and performances, and we describe the transient detection algorithms and filtering procedures needed to manage the high false alarm rate. We identify two classes of events: (1) sources which are new to Gaia and (2) Gaia sources which have undergone a significant brightening or fading. Validation of the Gaia transit astrometry and photometry was performed, followed by testing of the source environment to minimise contamination from Solar System objects, bright stars, and fainter near-neighbours. Results: We show that the Gaia Science Alerts project suffers from very low contamination, that is there are very few false-positives. We find that the external completeness for supernovae, $C_E=0.46$, is dominated by the Gaia scanning law and the requirement of detections from both fields-of-view. Where we have two or more scans the internal completeness is $C_I=0.79$ at 3 arcsec or larger from the centres of galaxies, but it drops closer in, especially within 1 arcsec. Conclusions: The per-transit photometry for Gaia transients is precise to 1 per cent at $G=13$, and 3 per cent at $G=19$. The per-transit astrometry is accurate to 55 milliarcseconds when compared to Gaia DR2. The Gaia Science Alerts project is one of the most homogeneous and productive transient surveys in operation, and it is the only survey which covers the whole sky at high spatial resolution (subarcsecond), including the Galactic plane and bulge., Comment: 26 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Background & aimsOnly a minority of excess alcohol drinkers develop cirrhosis. We developed and evaluated risk stratification scores to identify those at highest risk.MethodsThree cohorts (GenomALC-1: n = 1,690, GenomALC-2: n = 3,037, UK Biobank: relevant n = 6,898) with a history of heavy alcohol consumption (≥80 g/day (men), ≥50 g/day (women), for ≥10 years) were included. Cases were participants with alcohol-related cirrhosis. Controls had a history of similar alcohol consumption but no evidence of liver disease. Risk scores were computed from up to 8 genetic loci identified previously as associated with alcohol-related cirrhosis and 3 clinical risk factors. Score performance for the stratification of alcohol-related cirrhosis risk was assessed and compared across the alcohol-related liver disease spectrum, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).ResultsA combination of 3 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (PNPLA3:rs738409, SUGP1-TM6SF2:rs10401969, HSD17B13:rs6834314) and diabetes status best discriminated cirrhosis risk. The odds ratios (ORs) and (95% CIs) between the lowest (Q1) and highest (Q5) score quintiles of the 3-SNP score, based on independent allelic effect size estimates, were 5.99 (4.18-8.60) (GenomALC-1), 2.81 (2.03-3.89) (GenomALC-2), and 3.10 (2.32-4.14) (UK Biobank). Patients with diabetes and high risk scores had ORs of 14.7 (7.69-28.1) (GenomALC-1) and 17.1 (11.3-25.7) (UK Biobank) compared to those without diabetes and with low risk scores. Patients with cirrhosis and HCC had significantly higher mean risk scores than patients with cirrhosis alone (0.76 ± 0.06 vs. 0.61 ± 0.02, p = 0.007). Score performance was not significantly enhanced by information on additional genetic risk variants, body mass index or coffee consumption.ConclusionsA risk score based on 3 genetic risk variants and diabetes status enables the stratification of heavy drinkers based on their risk of cirrhosis, allowing for the provision of earlier preventative interventions.Lay summaryExcessive chronic drinking leads to cirrhosis in some people, but so far there is no way to identify those at high risk of developing this debilitating disease. We developed a genetic risk score that can identify patients at high risk. The risk of cirrhosis is increased >10-fold with just two risk factors - diabetes and a high genetic risk score. Risk assessment using this test could enable the early and personalised management of this disease in high-risk patients.

Abstract: We aim to demonstrate the scientific potential of the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) for the study of the Milky Way structure and evolution. We used astrometric positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and photometry from EDR3 to select different populations and components and to calculate the distances and velocities in the direction of the anticentre. We explore the disturbances of the current disc, the spatial and kinematical distributions of early accreted versus in-situ stars, the structures in the outer parts of the disc, and the orbits of open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1. We find that: i) the dynamics of the Galactic disc are very complex with vertical asymmetries, and new correlations, including a bimodality with disc stars with large angular momentum moving vertically upwards from below the plane, and disc stars with slightly lower angular momentum moving preferentially downwards; ii) we resolve the kinematic substructure (diagonal ridges) in the outer parts of the disc for the first time; iii) the red sequence that has been associated with the proto-Galactic disc that was present at the time of the merger with Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage is currently radially concentrated up to around 14 kpc, while the blue sequence that has been associated with debris of the satellite extends beyond that; iv) there are density structures in the outer disc, both above and below the plane, most probably related to Monoceros, the Anticentre Stream, and TriAnd, for which the Gaia data allow an exhaustive selection of candidate member stars and dynamical study; and v) the open clusters Berkeley~29 and Saurer~1, despite being located at large distances from the Galactic centre, are on nearly circular disc-like orbits.
