This article contends with Dietrich Bonhoeffer that Christian ethics does not hinge on the concept of “good” but instead emphasizes “history” as the focal point. Within this context Paul Ricoeur’s concept of hermeneutics emerges as a promising approach to reinterpreting Bonhoeffer’s Ethics, especially the relationship between simple obedience and decisive judgment. In addition, while making decisions in extraordinary situations poses challenges to Bonhoeffer, Ricoeur’s narrative framework may serve to connect the fragmented dot-like moments of ethical agents in concrete situations. It elucidates why judgment invariably occurs post simple obedience in ethical action and how Christian formation can be effectively undertaken. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
