Prior research shows that using mimetic isomorphism to select price/quality product strategies results in superior performance in the United States, the European Union, and Japan for both developed economy and emerging market manufacturers. However, do these results generalize in the case of emerging market service providers? Due to the nature of services, customers cannot gauge service quality prior to consumption, and they must rely on other cues; commonly, consumers rely on the brand name as a proxy. We theorize that for emerging market service providers, choosing a strategy of "distinctiveness" (pursuing a nondominant price/quality strategy) offers a way to differentiate their offering from the mimetic choice, resulting in superior performance. This article introduces a new theoretical concept, the "foreign champion", which attempts to solve the principal–agent problem and improve academic understanding of foreign market entry decisions by analyzing what experts in the field consider to be best practices. Based on empirical research into the determinants of SME internationalization success, semi-structured interviews (n = 12, t = 5 h 10 min.) were conducted with industry experts, including one academic, government officials, chamber and association leaders, a venture capitalist, and several CEOs, and key testimonies were studied using qualitative analysis software. The results shed light on effective internationalization strategies and common market entry mistakes. Despite the perception of saturation, the prominence of the experts, and the large sample, there may be limitations, such as not covering several regions. AbstractThis inquiry investigated the association between relationship marketing practices-(RMP) and firm performance-(FP) proxy by export performance-(EP) of SMEs in Ghana, utilizing innovation-(INN) and opportunity exploration-(OPE) as mediators. The inquiry espoused a cross-sectional research design, employing SmartPLS-3.3.3 to perform descriptive statistics, principal component analyses-(PCA), exploratory factor analyses-(EFA), reliability/validity analyses, partial least square-structural equation modeling-(PLS-SEM) path analyses via first-order confirmatory factor analysis-(CFA) for testing the hypotheses. Primary data was gathered employing closed-end-(standardized) questionnaires, implementing self-administered, researcher guided face-to-face real-time (immediate) data collection methodology. Secondary data-(financial information) was extracted from annual reports of the SMEs. Complete enumeration was utilized to select all 360 registered SMEs in good standing with the Ghana Enterprise Agency-(GEA) and Association of Ghana Industries-(AGI) forming the sampling frame and sample size. Findings revealed that all seven RMP explanatory variables namely, communication-(COM), adaptation-(ADP), corporation-(COP), trust-(TST), social connections-(SOC), reciprocity-(RCP), relationship quality-(REQ) significantly exerted positive impacts on FP/EP, with REQ exhibiting the most potent predictor, followed by COM, ADP, COP, TST, SOC, and RCP. Again, findings depict that innovation-(INN) and opportunity exploration-(OPE) partially mediated the relationship between RMP and FP/EP. The paper contributes to literature by incorporating the unexplored mediators of INN and OPE, within SMEs in an emerging economy. This research was conducted to design a model to influence the strategic orientation and management of export market orientation on export performance in business environment transformations. The method of this research is Grounded theory. For this purpose, the topic was investigated by interviewing experts who were selected by a purposeful method of judgment from the managers and marketing experts of 52 sample exporting companies in Isfahan province in 2020. The validity of the interview questions was assessed with the Binominal test and the reliability was assessed with the Cronbach's alpha test. The research results indicate that; Strategic export orientation, export market orientation, and export performance are the three main pillars of exports in the trans formatives. To direct an effective export strategy in the current situation, six key factors of information systems strategy, customer-oriented engineering strategy, increasing innovation strategy, Competitive orientation strategy, learning orientation strategy, and cost control strategy must be included. Moreover, the results of the analysis aimed at extracting four components for export market orientation, including; Virtual marketing, distribution through capillary networks, video branding, and health brand led. Furthermore, the results of content analysis for export performance include 2 components financial and operational. Examining the export performance in transformations should be considered as the contribution of the article in the management of knowledge in the field.

The export performance of firms has a key role for the Turkish economy. On the other hand, global environmental problems have clearly revealed the importance of reducing the negative impact of firms on the environment while carrying out their activities. From this point of view, this study aims to draw attention to the importance of making environmental commitment a core strategy in firms and to measure the impact of environmental commitment on export performance. In this context, specifically, the effects of having strategic goals related to environmental or global climate change-related problems, having a manager responsible for these problems, having an international quality certificate, having goals to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, and the measures taken to protect the environment and climate change on the export performance of Turkish manufacturing firms participating in the World Bank Enterprise Survey (Turkey -2019) are examined. The data set required for the research was obtained from the World Bank Enterprise Survey (Turkey – 2019) and the data obtained were analyzed by regression method. The results of the analysis indicate that having an international quality certificate and the measures taken by the firm towards environmental protection and climate change have a positive impact on export performance. Considering both the importance of the natural environment for sustainable development and the critical role of exports for the growth of firms and the national economy, the results of this study are expected to provide useful information for both firms and policy makers. This research is about the role of Export Market Orientation as mediation of Entrepreneurship Orientation and Learning Orientation on Export SME Performance in Indonesia. The main phenomenon is the total contribution of non-oil and gas exports (SMEs) which has a tendency to stagnate or even decrease since 2015 of 15.73%, then in 2019 it becomes 14.38%, far from the target set by the government at 17%, this is due to the lack of Indonesian UKM products interested in the global market. This causes the products of Indonesian SMEs to be unable to compete with SMEs of other countries in terms of export earnings. There are many factors that can cause this to happen, such as: lack of good standardization, many entrepreneurs only cater to the domestic market because they do not understand how to export, limited competent human resources and lack of access to financial institutions. Due to the limitations of the research model, especially those studying exports in developing countries, research using a quantitative approach with the SEM-PLS data analysis method is considered appropriate. The choice of the SEM-PLS method, because this research is predictive in nature, will of course be able to better represent the research model. In this study, there were 84 SMEs respondents who were registered with the Ministry of SMEs and Cooperatives. The results revealed that export market orientation had an effect as a mediating relationship between learning orientation and the performance of export SMEs, however, in an indirect relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and export performance, the mediating role of export market orientation not significant. Research on the export performance consequences of the degree of export diversification pursed by firms is scant. To address this research gap, this study examines whether firms' export success levels are tied to the extent to which they adopt national diversification strategies (the number of countries they choose to export to) and/or regional diversification strategies (the number of regions they choose to export to) and unpicks the critical contingencies of these linkages. Based on a sample of 225 UK exporters the authors find that firms gain the highest export performance benefits when they simultaneously increase national and regional export diversification. Interestingly, results also show that the links between the extent to which exporters engage in a national diversification strategy and/or a regional diversification strategy are weaker when firms operate in markets that are very high in market dynamism, and that the relationships are stronger when both resource sharing and interfunctional coordination are high. Background & Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to develop a strategic empowerment model for the export performance of sport products with a world-class approach with an emphasis on resilient economy for the development of the Iranian sports industry. Methodology: The research methodology was qualitative and based on the theory of data. Data analysis was performed on the Paradigm model of Strauss and Corbin method. The sampling was done by theoretical sampling method. Using a targeted method and a snowball, a deep interview was conducted with 15 selected samples including experts, economists and faculty members (sports marketing, industrial management) Theoretical saturation was obtained and interviews were implemented. Results: Referring to the results of analyzing field interviews in the Nvivo 10 environment . The strategic empowerment model of the export performance of sport productions was obtained with 124 concepts and 23 axial codes and 5 selective codes. The results of this study show that among the factors of production in the global class (quality, innovation, cost, time, flexibility) and factors Service in the global class (sales and after sales) There is a causal relationship with the resistance economy and its sub-categories. It can lead to the strategic empowerment of the export performance of sport productions in the development of the world class sports industry. Discussion: According to the results of this study, it is suggested that the identification and support of domestic producers in the industrial sector of sport of the country. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between geographic diversification (GD) and export performance (EP) by analysing a sample of small exporters in an emerging market. Design/methodology/approach: The study sample comprised 96 small and medium-sized exporting enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. The data is analysed using multiple regression analysis (MRA), Hayes' process model and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Findings: The results indicate that GD significantly negatively affects EP. In this dilemma, the export market orientation (EMO) and digital transformation positively moderated the relationship between GD and EP, such that the negative effect of GD on EP was weaker when EMO and digital were stronger. Originality/value: This initial study contributes significantly to international business theories and practices, which reveal the role of GD via firm digital capacity and EMO in thriving SMEs' EP. This study might grant new insight into international business and a critical approach to addressing the new insights small firms may face in a fragile but technologically advanced world. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of the firms' external environment on their export intensity. More specifically, it assesses whether domestic market characteristics such as domestic demand and general export environment related to tradability across borders affect firms' export intensity. Design/methodology/approach: The authors use a sample of 29,266 firms from nine European countries, for the period of 2010–2016, and test several estimation methods (random effects models, Tobit models, and Heckman's selection models). Findings: Results show that external factors such as domestic demand and ease of trade across borders are important determinants of firms' export intensity. Moreover, results reveal that firm's internal characteristics such as age, size and productivity also play an import role. Originality/value: Studies about the influence of the firms' external environment on firms' export intensity are scarce because most of them are confined to a single country context. In this way, the present study contributes to the body of knowledge on the influence that external factors can have on firms' export performance by analyzing firms from nine European countries, which has important policy implications. This research is aimed at enhancing comprehension and validation of the variables that drive the export performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. Notwithstanding the paucity of evidence regarding the export experiences of SMEs from developing countries in the literature, studying the SME setting is crucial, given its growing significance in enhancing national and global economies. A survey design was used to gather data from owners and managers of Nigerian SMEs that were involved in exports. Based on convenience sampling, 450 questionnaires were distributed. Of this number, 278 valid responses were returned. The study model was assessed via partial least square structural equation modelling (PLSSEM), and the statistical package for social science (SPSS v24) was used for preliminary analysis. The results seem to suggest that the seven-construct measurements-entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation, learning orientation, export orientation, export knowledge, access to finance, and export performance are well suited for estimating the variables under investigation in a Nigerian setting. Similarly, the direct relationship between the exogenous and endogenous constructs was positive and significant. The outcomes validated applying the dynamic capability view and its principles to explain the success of the export performance of SMEs in Nigeria.

Indonesia’s economic growth has slowed down during the pandemic. Coffee is a foreign exchange-producing agricultural commodity for Indonesia and has become a pillar of the national economy because of its contribution to the gross domestic product. The purpose of this study was to analyse the competitiveness of Indonesian coffee exports in the United States market. The methods employed included the Revealed Comparative Advantage, which can measure export competitiveness comparatively, and the Export Product Dynamic method to analyse and map the position of export competitiveness. The analysis results were also measured to compare the export competitiveness of Vietnamese coffee. The findings showed that Indonesian coffee and Vietnamese coffee in the United States market have a value above 1, proving that both have export competitiveness advantages. The average Revealed Comparative Advantage value of Indonesian coffee is higher than that of Vietnamese coffee, meaning that Indonesian coffee exports are superior to Vietnamese coffee exports to the United States. Meanwhile, the results of the Export Product Dynamic analysis showed that the competitiveness of Indonesian coffee exports is in the position of Lost Opportunity, where the position has shifted from the pre-pandemic position, namely Retreat. Meanwhile, the competitiveness of Vietnamese coffee exports was in the Rising Star position, which shifted from the previous position of Lost Opportunity. Lost Opportunity of Indonesian coffee shows that the strength of Indonesia’s coffee commodity business is weak, but commodity exports are still competitive. The analysis results indicated that even though Indonesia’s coffee has export competitiveness, it is not competitive enough in the United States. This study provided an overview of the export competitiveness of Indonesian coffee in the United States, which can be used as a basis for determining strategic steps in an effort to dominate the market to obtain trade benefits

This study seeks to analyze the impact of land reform on the export performance of tobacco, since the cash crop is a major foreign currency earner for Zimbabwe. A gravity model was adopted for the study using secondary panel data from 1992 to 2018. The findings show that 17.2% of the explanatory variables in the model are responsible for changes in tobacco export performance. Land reform, agricultural financial assistance, and distance had significant negative effects on tobacco exports. Land reform must be accompanied by other reforms that complement its success, such as market structure, financing arrangements, and property rights.

Although there are several studies analyzing how cost leadership and cost focus competitive strategies influence export performance, this article examines the relationship between innovation capabilities (ICs) and export performance (ExPf), as well as the mediating effects of cost leadership and cost focus competitive strategies among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Mozambique. Based on empirical survey data collected from 250 SME managers in Mozambique, we utilized Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) for data analysis. Findings demonstrate that both cost leadership and cost focus competitive strategies partially mediate the ICs-ExPf relationship. Furthermore, these competitive strategies enhance the direct effect of ICs on export performance. These results suggest that SMEs from emerging countries, such as Mozambique, can effectively develop ICs and leverage cost leadership and cost focus advantages to successfully compete in international markets. The implications of this study are significant for owners and managers of SMEs from emerging countries, as it provides valuable insights into the impact of cost leadership and cost focus advantages of firms’ innovation capabilities. By understanding these relationships, SMEs can make more informed decisions and adopt more effective management approaches when seeking to compete in internationally, particularly among SMEs in emerging countries.

Market-oriented environmental sustainability (MES), which is part of an organization’s orientation towards the export market and its impact on the export resources and competencies of firms was analyzed in this study. Further, this research also examines the influence of export resources and competencies on export strategy of marketing and export performance of organizations. To accomplish this objective, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used. Data was gathered from 194 manufacturing export enterprises. The results indicate that MES positively impacts resources and competencies connected to green export. Furthermore, only resources indirectly affect eco-friendly export marketing strategy through capabilities, but green export-related competencies directly affect it. The findings also demonstrate how an eco-friendly export marketing approach improves a company’s export success. By analyzing business orientation and its impact on eco-friendly export marketing strategy and export performance, this research contributes the field of sustainability and exporting. This study has significant managerial Implications, it explicitly opens up significant decision-making channels for Indian SMEs engaged in exporting to various markets. First, it advises businesses that their acquisition of resources and eventual development of skills will be influenced by their orientation, i.e. preference for green values, norms, and behaviors. The study’s findings also demonstrate that businesses must put effort into developing capabilities rather than just investing in resources alone.

AbstractAn increase in Vietnamese agricultural export performance can contribute to the decrease in trade deficit with ASEAN + 3. In order to achieve it, some factors affecting export performance should be studied. The research model is proposed to indicate the direct relationship between government support and export performance and the indirect relationship between government support and export performance through perceived export stimuli and perceived export barriers. Smart-PLS software was used to test the collected data from 257 SMEs exporting agricultural products to ASEAN + 3. Findings show that there is not only a direct effect of government export support on export performance but also an indirect effect through perceived internal export stimuli. Besides, there is an indirect relationship between government support and perceived internal export barriers through perceived internal and external export stimuli. Based on findings, the research draws key implications for managers and policymakers. However, because of difficulty to approach SMEs’ managers, the research has some limitations including sample size and sample taking method (convenience and snowball).

One of the success factors in export development is the existence of appropriate strategies and competitive advantages. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of differentiation competitive strategy on export performance with the mediating role of positional advantage with a case study in the stone mines of Lorestan province. The statistical population of the research includes 88 experts from companies active in the field of stone industry in Lorestan province. Based on Morgan's table, 66 of these experts were selected using simple random sampling and lottery, and a standard questionnaire was distributed among them. In relation to measuring the variable of competitive differentiation strategy, from the questionnaire of Morgan et al. (2004) and Olaka et al. (2000), for measuring export performance from the questionnaire of Jonathan et al. (2005) and for measuring the variable of positional advantage from the questionnaire of Morgan et al. (2004) used. Structural equation modeling method and PLS software were used to check and test the model. The results showed that competitive differentiation strategy has a positive and significant effect on export performance (β=0.685) and positional advantage (β=0.549). Also, locational advantage has a positive and significant effect on export performance (β=0.742). Also, the results showed that the competitive strategy of differentiation through positional advantage has a positive and significant effect on export performance (β=0.395). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the role of renewable and non-renewable energy sources in exports performance of 18 emerging economies from 2000 to 2020. This is done to better elucidate the potential implications of energy transition on the export performance of emerging economies. The estimated models also control for the influences of per capita income, population, and government effectiveness. The Westerlund cointegration confirms the presence of a significant long-run relationship between the variables under consideration. In this regard, two-step System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation demonstrates that non-renewable energy consumption promotes exports in emerging economies and renewable energy use hampers it in the long run. At the same time, increase in per-capita income and population size negatively influence the exports. On the other hand, though insignificant, government effectiveness contributes positively to the export performance. The Kernel Regularized Least Squares (KRLS) estimation also confirms the reliability of these baseline findings. This study empirically investigates the relationship between technological capability and social media usage on export performance of garment Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia, along with the mediating effect of competitive advantage. To analyze questionnaire data from 138 garment SMEs, path analysis was performed. The findings indicate that technological capabilities directly impact export performance, while social media usage does not. However, competitive advantage mediates the relationship between these relationships. Finally, this study contributes to filling the gap of previous research by incorporating competitive advantage as a mediating variable and enhancing the role of Resource Dependence Theory and Social Presence Theory. Purpose: The growing demand for halal products has attracted small and large companies looking to secure their market share in the lucrative global halal market. However, it is difficult for resource-constrained firms, such as small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to compete internationally. Therefore, drawing from a resource-based view, this paper aims to examine how intangible resources affect the export performance of Malaysian SMEs exporting halal food and beverages (F&B) products. Design/methodology/approach: This study used a purposive sampling technique, and respondents were reached out by mail. Out of 517 local SMEs exporting halal-certified F&Bs contacted, 193 firms responded, and only 188 responses were eligible to be used for data analysis. The partial least squares structural equation modelling technique was used to conduct the analysis. The data underwent measurement and structural model evaluation to confirm the hypotheses postulated. Findings: Based on the data analysis conducted, it was discovered that intangible resources, namely, international orientation and marketing capability, significantly influence the export performance of Malaysian SMEs exporting halal F&B. However, the influence of cultural intelligence on export performance could not be demonstrated. Originality/value: This paper fills the gap of the need for more attention to SMEs in developing countries, especially in the halal industry. Exporting enterprises representing countries in global competition constitute a valuable research area and create the opportunity to conduct research on them. Exporting enterprises have a crucial place in the welfare of developing countries, especially with the foreign exchange revenues they will bring. Therefore, many different aspects of exporting enterprises need to be examined both from a business and scientific point of view. This study aimed to comprehend the mutual relationship between business performance and export performance among 192 exporters in Turkiye. In the study, data were collected through scales for export performance and business performance of enterprises, and performance outputs were revealed as a result of factor analysis. Afterwards, it was examined whether there is a significant difference in the export performance of companies with high and low business performance and whether there is a significant difference in the business performance of companies with high and low export performance. Achieved t-test findings, show that significant differences existed in both the export performance of companies with high business performance and the business performance of companies with high export performance. These findings of the study indicate that exporting companies' financial business opportunities may have an impact on export performance, and similarly, companies with good export performance can also achieve a strong financial output. In this context, it has been suggested that businesses should focus on performance outputs with a two-way perspective and that exporting businesses should not only focus on exports. There is a strong need to transform agriculture from its heavy dependence on staple crops to an increased production that can, on the one hand, address the needs and quality requirements of domestic and export markets, but also grow into a resilient agri-food system. The paper acknowledges the emergence of agro-clusters as an essential element in promoting sustainable agriculture practices and in supporting export performance. The main objective of our research is to investigate the role of clusters in promoting knowledge transfer, improve competitiveness and boost technological investments through the example of selected relevant agri-clusters. To extend the existing literature, our research aims to evaluate the link between export performance - measured considering the volume of trade – and the existence of agri-clusters. We have assumed that there is a strong direct relationship between the existence and stage of development of agricultural clusters, the performance of agricultural exports – expressed in terms of total value of agricultural exports - and resilient agri-food systems. To test our hypothesis, we use data from the United Nations Comtrade Database on changes in export share and value of agricultural products over the last decade, complementary with qualitative analysis based on more than 100 sources (government documents, webpages, presentations, projects) of the top five global agricultural exporters to evaluate the existence of agricultural clusters, the government support and implication, and the integration of other actors such as universities, research centers, financial institutions. The results indicate a positive correlation between the development stage of analysed agricultural clusters, the resilience of agri-food systems and the performance of agricultural exports of the country of origin. By utilizing comprehensive industrial policies and customs trade databases from 2000 to 2015, this paper found that firms with product ranges within policy‐supported areas were more active in product switching. Among all the enterprises that adopted the product switching, those with nonmain products in policy‐supported areas were more inclined to adjust their main product. They tended to transform nonmain product to main product as opposed to introducing new main product in order to effectively leverage their export experience and established technology. Whereas, for enterprises whose main product was within the policy‐supported areas, their tendency to switch products significantly decreased. Mechanism analysis suggested that policy support, by alleviating industry distress and mitigating excessive market competition, encouraged firms to switch products to areas with policy backing. Moreover, we estimated trade performance after product switching from the perspective of product unit price and export product quality. We found that for firms whose main product was in policy‐supported areas, such switching was more likely to result in "low price, high quality" exports, whereas for firms with nonmain products in supported areas, such switching was more likely to lead to "high price, low quality" exports, which indicates that firms switching to policy‐supported areas need to continuously develop their core competencies and operate effectively to improve their production performance. The data comes from research analyzing the effect of business model innovation on firms' export performance and, also, the role of organizational agility and open innovation as antecedents of business model innovation. The population in this study was comprised by 1518 Spanish exporting manufacturing companies, and the final valid sample included 196 companies. To collect the data, a telephone survey was conducted using a questionnaire designed based on the literature review. PLS was used to assess the reliability and validity of the measures and to test the structural model. The results showed that the measures meet the general criteria commonly accepted by the literature, which makes them suitable for conducting replication studies. Moreover, the data can be used to go further in the study of the relationships between business model innovation and export performance and to clarify the determinants of business model innovation by considering the different dimensions of that variable, to examine some group-specific effects and to test whether some characteristics of the firms in the sample may moderate the relationships between the variables mentioned above. Since business model innovation is crucial in today´s turbulent markets, a better understanding of its antecedents and its impact on firms´ export performance can help guide managers in their decisions.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships between technology orientations and export performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative research design was adopted for this study. The paper formulates hypotheses from the literature review. These hypotheses are tested using structural equation modeling with data collected from 231 SMEs in Uganda. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23 and AMOS. Findings – The findings of this study showed technology orientation has a positive and significant relationship with the performance of Ugandan SMEs and that supply chain agility moderates technology orientation and export performance. Research limitations/implications – The study discusses the findings, advances limitations and managerial implications. It also suggests future research avenues. It proposes some recommendations to help Ugandan SMEs to form flexible supply chains, use the latest technology and create strong relationship ties with their partners in the supply chain. Practical implications – The study suggests that managers of Ugandan SMEs should use the latest technology in production, marketing, logistics and supply chain management which will enable them to respond quickly to customer tastes and preferences leading to higher levels of export performance. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature on strategic management showing the reliability of scales used and the confirmatory of the factor structure. This study shows that in strategic management technology, orientation is critical in increasing export performance. This study has extended the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities theories.

This article introduces a new theoretical concept, the “foreign champion”, which attempts to solve the principal–agent problem and improve academic understanding of foreign market entry decisions by analyzing what experts in the field consider to be best practices. Based on empirical research into the determinants of SME internationalization success, semi-structured interviews (n = 12, t = 5 h 10 min.) were conducted with industry experts, including one academic, government officials, chamber and association leaders, a venture capitalist, and several CEOs, and key testimonies were studied using qualitative analysis software. The results shed light on effective internationalization strategies and common market entry mistakes. Despite the perception of saturation, the prominence of the experts, and the large sample, there may be limitations, such as not covering several regions. The originality of this study lies in its conceptual framework, the insights gained from the select interviews, and a new concept of foreign market entry.
