Each nuclear weapon test contributes to a global burden of released radioactivity. Between 1945 and 1996, more than 2,000 nuclear tests were conducted, three-quarters of which were underground. Underground nuclear tests involved placing the nuclear device in a cavity drilled or excavated beneath the surface. The goal was to contain the explosion and its effects to the immediate vicinity of the detonation point, ultimately minimizing the release of radioactive materials into the atmosphere. While these tests successfully curtailed the atmospheric release and radioactive fallout, they created dynamic responses within crustal formations caused by local shock waves from the explosion. This paper discusses the legacy of underground nuclear testing, addressing issues from containment failure to the phenomenological effects after underground detonations and the pathways of subsequent dispersal of radionuclides to the environment. Pyrochlore (A2B2O7) is an important, isometric structure-type because of its large variety of compositions and structural derivatives that are generally related to different disordering mechanisms at various spatial scales. The disordering is key to understanding variations in properties, such as magnetic behavior or ionic conduction. Neutron and X-ray total scattering methods were used to investigate the degree of structural disorder in the Ho2Ti2-x Zr x O7 (x = 0.0-2.0, Δx = 0.25) solid solution series as a function of the Zr-content, x. Ordered pyrochlores (Fd3̄m) disorder to defect fluorite (Fm3̄m) via cation and anion disordering. Total scattering experiments with sensitivity to the cation and anion sublattices provide unique insight into the underlying atomic processes. Using simultaneous Rietveld refinement (long-range structure) and small-box refinement PDF analysis (short-range structure), we show that the series undergoes a rapid transformation from pyrochlore to defect fluorite at x ≈ 1.2, while the short-range structure exhibits a linear increase in a local weberite-type phase, C2221, over the entire composition range. Enthalpies of formation from the oxides determined using high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry support the structural data and provide insight into the effect of local ordering on the energetics of disorder. The measured enthalpies of mixing are negative and are fit by a regular solution parameter of W = -31.8 ± 3.7 kJ mol-1. However, the extensive short-range ordering determined from the structural analysis strongly suggests that the entropies of mixing must be far less positive than implied by the random mixing of a regular solution. We propose a local disordering scheme involving the pyrochlore 48f to 8a site oxygen Frenkel defect that creates 7-coordinated Zr sites contained within local weberite-type coherent nanodomains. Thus, the solid solution is best described as a mixture of two phases, with the weberite-type nanodomains triggering the long-range structural transformation to defect fluorite after accumulation above a critical concentration (50% Ti replaced by Zr).

Atomic disordering in materials alters their physical and chemical properties and can subsequently affect their performance. In complex ceramic materials, it is a challenge to understand the nature of structural disordering, due to the difficulty of direct, atomic-scale experimental observations. Here we report the direct imaging of ion irradiation-induced antisite defects in Mn+1AXn phases using double CS-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and provide compelling evidence of order-to-disorder phase transformations, overturning the conventional view that irradiation causes phase decomposition to binary fcc-structured Mn+1Xn. With the formation of uniformly distributed cation antisite defects and the rearrangement of X anions, disordered solid solution γ-(Mn+1A)Xn phases are formed at low ion fluences, followed by gradual transitions to solid solution fcc-structured (Mn+1A)Xn phases. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the order-to-disorder transformations in Mn+1AXn phases and proposes a method for the synthesis of new solid solution (Mn+1A)Xn phases by tailoring the disorder.

In situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were used to determine the influence of composition on the high-pressure behavior of A2B2O7 pyrochlore (A = Eu, Dy; B = Ti, Zr) up to ∼50 GPa. Based on X-ray diffraction results, all compositions transformed to the high-pressure cotunnite structure. The B-site cation species had a larger effect on the transition pressure than the A-site cation species, with the onset of the phase transformation occurring at ∼41 GPa for B = Ti and ∼16 GPa B = Zr. However, the A-site cation affected the kinetics of the phase transformation, with the transformation for compositions with the smaller ionic radii, i.e., A = Dy, proceeding faster than those with a larger ionic radii, i.e., A = Eu. These results were consistent with previous work in which the radius-ratio of the A- and B-site cations determined the energetics of disordering, and compositions with more similarly sized A- and B-site cations had a lower defect formation energy. Raman spectra revealed differences in the degree of short-range order of the different compositions. Due to the large phase fraction of cotunnite at high pressure for B = Zr compositions, Raman modes for cotunnite could be observed, with more modes recorded for A = Eu than A = Dy. These additional modes are attributed to increased short-to-medium range ordering in the initially pyrochlore structured Eu2Zr2O7 as compared with the initially defect-fluorite structured Dy2Zr2O7.

This contribution provides a thorough examination of the structural characteristics of pyrochlore-type lanthanide titanates and zirconates Ln2Ti2O7 and Ln2Zr2O7, across various length scales. This paper also examines their processing, interesting physical properties (electrical, magnetic, and thermal characteristics), and responses to high pressure and ion irradiation. Brief sections on the elemental oxides' crystal chemistry, pertinent phase diagrams, and energetics of defect formation are also provided. Pyrochlore-type Ln2Ti2O7 and Ln2Zr2O7 stand out as truly multifunctional materials. Moreover, they have emerged as fascinating materials due to magnetic geometrical frustration, arising from the ordering of magnetic Ln3+ and non-magnetic Ti4+ (or Zr4+) cations into separate, interpenetrating lattices of corner-sharing tetrahedra. This results in a diverse array of exotic magnetic ground states, such as spin-ice (e.g., Dy2Ti2O7 or Ho2Ti2O7) or quantum spin ice (e.g., Tb2Ti2O7), observed at both low and room temperatures. They also exhibit varied electrical and electrochemical characteristics. Some members such as Gd2Zr2O7, function as fast ion conductors with a conductivity (σ) of ≈10−2 S·cm−1 at 800 °C and activation energy (Ea) ranging from 0.85 to 1.52 eV, depending on the degree of structural disorder. Others, such as Gd2TiMoO7, are mixed ionic-electronic conductors with σ ≈ 25 S·cm−1 at 1000 °C, making them promising candidate materials for applications in energy conversion and storage devices and oxygen separation membranes. Their exceptionally low thermal conductivity (e.g., κ ∼ 1.1–1.7 W·m−1·K−1 between 700 and 1200 °C for Ln2Zr2O7), close to the glass-like lower limit of highly disordered solids, positions them as valuable materials for thermal barrier coatings. They can also effectively accommodate actinides (e.g., Pu, Np, Cm, Am) in solid solutions and sustain prolonged exposure to radiation due to alpha-decay events, while preserving the integrity of the periodic atomic structure. Proposed as major components in actinide-bearing ceramics, they contribute to the long-term immobilization and disposal of long-lived waste radionuclides from nuclear programs. Some of these properties are displayed simultaneously, opening avenues for new applications. Despite the wealth of data available in the literature, this review highlights the need for a better understanding of order/disorder processes in pyrochlore-type materials and the influence of the structural length scale on their physical and chemical properties. Recent experimental evidence has revealed that pyrochlore short-range structure is far more complex than originally thought. Moreover, pyrochlore local structure is now believed to include short-range, lower symmetry, ordered domains, such as the orthorhombic weberite-type of structure. Notably, short- and long-range structures appear decoupled across different length scales and temperature regimes, and these differences persist even in well-ordered samples. Coffinite, USiO4, is an important U(IV) mineral, but its thermodynamic properties are not well-constrained. In this work, two different coffinite samples were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and purified from a mixture of products. The enthalpy of formation was obtained by high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Coffinite is energetically metastable with respect to a mixture of UO2 (uraninite) and SiO2 (quartz) by 25.6 ± 3.9 kJ/mol. Its standard enthalpy of formation from the elements at 25 °C is -1,970.0 ± 4.2 kJ/mol. Decomposition of the two samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction and by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry coupled with mass spectrometric analysis of evolved gases. Coffinite slowly decomposes to U3O8 and SiO2 starting around 450 °C in air and thus has poor thermal stability in the ambient environment. The energetic metastability explains why coffinite cannot be synthesized directly from uraninite and quartz but can be made by low-temperature precipitation in aqueous and hydrothermal environments. These thermochemical constraints are in accord with observations of the occurrence of coffinite in nature and are relevant to spent nuclear fuel corrosion.

Much of the available data on nuclear activities in North Korea comes from Earth observation satellites. However, with increased coverage and higher resolution satellite images, analysts face challenges in systematically analyzing large-scale image datasets. In this case study, we report on an automated analysis of over 800 satellite images that tracked vehicular traffic as a proxy for activity levels at the core North Korean nuclear facilities, as well as international trade at border crossings between China and North Korea. Geospatial artificial intelligence and automated image analysis improves the efficiency of collecting analytical metrics, yielding results more quickly and of higher quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zircon-class ternary oxide compounds have an ideal chemical formula of ATO4, where A is commonly a lanthanide and an actinide, with T = As, P, Si, or V. Their structure (I41/amd) accommodates a diverse chemistry on both A- and T-sites, giving rise to more than 17 mineral end-members of five different mineral groups, and in excess of 45 synthetic end-members. Because of their diverse chemical and physical properties, the zircon structure-type materials are of interest to a wide variety of fields and may be used as ceramic nuclear waste forms and as aeronautical environmental barrier coatings, to name a couple. To support advancement of their applications, many studies have been dedicated to the understanding of their structural and thermodynamic properties. The emphasis in this review will be on recent advances in the structural and thermodynamic studies of zircon structure-type ceramics, including pure end-members [e.g., zircon (ZrSiO4), xenotime (YPO4)] and solid solutions [e.g., ErxTh1–x(PO4)x(SiO4)1–x]. Specifically, we provide an overview on the crystal structure, its variations and transformations in response to non-ambient stimuli (temperature, pressure, and radiation), and its correlation to thermophysical and thermochemical properties. Critical metals (CMs), including rare-earth elements (REEs), lithium (Li), and beryllium (Be), provide the foundation for the development of advanced technologies and are essential to national security and economic development in many countries. While China has most of the world's REE processing capacity, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) reportedly possesses significant untapped CM resources. With the size and total value estimated to be worth trillions of dollars, its large resources are reputedly the DPRK's most significant internal asset. Despite the oft-cited abundance of CMs, evidence-based analyses of the mineral resources are limited. We provide a comprehensive analysis of CM resources in the DPRK based on geological analysis of potential deposits. Three main REE deposits at Ryongpo, Cheolsan, Abdong, and various Li and Be deposits are investigated. Extensive analyses indicate that previous estimates of a large CM resource base for the DPRK are exaggerated. There is no clear evidence for significant resources that are economical. While there remains a possibility of identifying new ore deposits, for the DPRK to access its CM resources, it will need to develop a nationwide exploration and exploitation strategy to attract foreign investments. A strategy of investment and investigation might provide a springboard for cooperation between the DPRK and other nations as these resources are discovered and developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
