Abstract A growing body of evidence indicates there is an increasing incidence of cognitive dysfunction in patients after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. However, still lack diagnostic tools, which allow us to predict prognosis in such cases and improve the stratification of the disease. This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of the biomarkers that could allow to predict the severity and progression of COVID-19 in patients with post-COVID syndrome and cognitive problems. Data regarding clinical history, pre-existing conditions, chest CT scan, and therapy (remdesivir, steroids) were acquired. A total of 44 patients with hospitalized COVID-19, and healthy controls were enrolled in the investigation, and serum blood was obtained. After 6 months of observations, patients with COVID-19 were divided into two groups: first - without post-COVID syndrome and memory complaints, and second - with post-COVID and cognitive problems. Measurements of YKL-40 and MR-pro-ADM were taken in the serum with enzyme immunoassay kits at the time of admission (visit 1) and 6 months after discharge from the hospital (visit 2). Significantly higher concentrations of YKL-40 were found in patients with COVID-19 as compared to healthy individuals (p = 0.016). Moreover, YKL-40 ratio allowed to differentiate patients with and without post-COVID syndrome (median: 0.94 vs. 1.55, p = 0.004). Additionally, COVID-19 patients with dyspnea presented significantly elevated levels of MR-pro-ADM as compared to the group of COVID-19 survivors without dyspnea (p = 0.015). In the group of patients without post-COVID syndrome, the concentrations of YKL-40 and MR-pro-ADM decreased after treatment as compared to levels before therapy (77 vs. 36 ng/ml and 607 vs. 456 pmol/L). However, in patients with post-COVID syndrome and cognitive problems, the levels of both markers did not alter 6 months after hospital discharge in comparison to basal levels. Furthermore, after dexamethasone treatment the YKL-40 concentrations declined significantly (p = 0.003) in patients with COVID-19. This study demonstrated the predictive usefulness of YKL-40 as an indicator of successful treatment in patients with COVID-19 infection allowing risk stratification of hospitalized patients. It seems that indicators of neuroinflammation might have the potential to track development of cognitive complaints, however, it requires further investigations.

ABSTRACT Our goal was to assess the anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies presence in COVID-19 convalescents and assess the differences in anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies production regarding the disease severity, sex, vaccination, and assess the correlation between anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies production and inflammatory parameters. Three hundred twenty-two COVID-19 patients (282 hospitalized and 40 patients with oligosymptomatic COVID-19 isolated at homes) were included in the study. Blood was taken at 4 time points: during hospitalization, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. Detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was performed with LIAISON SARS-CoV-2 S1/S2 IgG tests (DiaSorin, Italy). Clinical and laboratory parameters were compared. Significant differences between higher anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies titer in symptomatic patients 3 months after infection (III sample) and significantly higher ratio II/I in symptomatic patients were observed. Subgroup analysis based on sex showed differences only in laboratory tests, not in serological. Analysis of the results of serological tests showed significant differences in ratio IV/I and a significant increase in antibodies level after vaccination. The most significant rise was observed between the 3rd and 6th month when the patients received a vaccination. Immunological response after COVID-19 infection lasted over 6 months in all patients, although antibodies titers were significantly higher in patients with a history of severe COVID-19 and vaccinated patients. Immunological response after COVID-19 infection did not depend on sex. There was a significant correlation between anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies production and the degree of inflammation in the acute phase of the disease (inflammatory parameters in blood and severity of lung affection in CT). IMPORTANCE The results of our study confirm the knowledge on immune response in the Polish population and add new information regarding correlations with the severity of the disease. The data in the literature concerning the correlation between antibodies response and sex are ambiguous, and we did not observe differences between antibodies production and gender, which also adds new information.

Cars with air conditioning systems have become the norm, but these systems can be dangerous for human health as a result of the accumulation of different microorganisms, including pathogenic ones, causing severe allergy or inflammation problems. The novel purpose of this study is 2-fold: on the one hand, to test different disinfection agents on a new area, that is, automobile cabins, and on the other, to compare activity in the gas phase of these agents for disinfection of car air conditioning and cabin surfaces. This study shown that tested disinfectant agents dedicated for decontamination medical areas (agent based on peracetic acid and an agent containing didecyldimethylammonium chloride, 2-phenoxyethanol with cinnamaldehyde) can be successfully used for disinfection car air conditioning and cabin surfaces. Both disinfectants were examined in comparison to a commercial “ready-to-use” spray from a local supermarket dedicated to car air conditioning disinfection. Our research found that very effective agents in this regard were acid stabilized by hydrogen peroxide applied by fumigator, and a combination of didecyldimethylammonium chloride, 2-phenoxyethanol, and cinnamaldehyde applied by atomizer. Tested disinfection procedures of car air conditioning significantly influence the quality of cabin air and surfaces by reducing the amount of microorganisms. The comparison of disinfection properties studied agents in the gas phase reveal statistically significant differences between it effect for disinfection car air conditioning and cabin surfaces. Disinfection is a key element in controlling infections. Fogging, also known as fumigation, is one of the most effective chemical disinfection methods. Peracetic acid (PAA) is a powerful oxidant with bactericidal and fungicidal properties. The aim of this study is to determine the type of bacteria and fungi present in educational institutions and whether disinfection by PAA fumigation in these institutions is also effective and useful, as demonstrated previously in healthcare centers. This study was carried out in five kindergartens and five primary schools in Bialystok, Poland. Three rooms have been selected in each of these educational institutions, and the disinfection was carried out in 30 rooms in total. Fogging with PAA was performed in selected rooms. Before and after disinfection, samples were collected from four surfaces: walls, tables, doors, and chair backs. Most frequently detected microorganisms in schools and kindergartens were Micrococcus luteus (M. luteus), Staphylococcus warneri (S. warneri), Paracoccus yeei (P. yeei), Staphylococcus hominis ssp. hominis (S. hominis), Kocuria rhizophila (K. rhizophila), Kocuria rosea (K. rosea). In addition, Staphylococcus haemolyticus (S. haemolyticus), Acinetobacter lwoffii (A. lwoffii), Kocuria kristinae (K. kristinae), Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis (L. lactis) were the most prevalent in kindergartens, whereas Kytococcus sedentarius (K. sedentarius) was the most prevalent in schools. Comparison of the bacterial flora of schools and kindergartens showed statistically significant differences in the prevalence of bacteria on different surfaces. A significant decrease in the number of colonies after disinfection was observed on all surfaces (p < 0.05). In addition, the calculated effectiveness of disinfection was 99.7% in kindergartens and 99.3% in schools. The results indicate that fogging of PAA is a highly effective method of surface disinfection in kindergartens and schools.

Tick-borne encephalitis is a neuroinfection widely distributed in the Euro–Asia region. Primarily, the virus is transmitted by the bite of infected ticks. From 2000–2019, the total number of confirmed cases in Europe reported to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control was 51,519. The number of cases decreased in 2014 and 2015; however, since 2015, a growing number of cases have been observed, with the involvement of countries in which TBE has not been previously reported. The determinant factors for the spread of TBE are host population size, weather conditions, movement of hosts, and local regulations on the socioeconomic dynamics of the local and travelling people around the foci areas. The mean incidence rate of tick-borne encephalitis from 2000–2019 in Europe was 3.27, while the age-adjusted mean incidence rate was 2.19 per 100,000 population size.
