- Abstract
Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

- Abstract
Humans impact terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems, yet many broad-scale studies have found no systematic, negative biodiversity changes (for example, decreasing abundance or taxon richness). Here we show that mixed biodiversity responses may arise because community metrics show variable responses to anthropogenic impacts across broad spatial scales. We first quantified temporal trends in anthropogenic impacts for 1,365 riverine invertebrate communities from 23 European countries, based on similarity to least-impacted reference communities. Reference comparisons provide necessary, but often missing, baselines for evaluating whether communities are negatively impacted or have improved (less or more similar, respectively). We then determined whether changing impacts were consistently reflected in metrics of community abundance, taxon richness, evenness and composition. Invertebrate communities improved, that is, became more similar to reference conditions, from 1992 until the 2010s, after which improvements plateaued. Improvements were generally reflected by higher taxon richness, providing evidence that certain community metrics can broadly indicate anthropogenic impacts. However, richness responses were highly variable among sites, and we found no consistent responses in community abundance, evenness or composition. These findings suggest that, without sufficient data and careful metric selection, many common community metrics cannot reliably reflect anthropogenic impacts, helping explain the prevalence of mixed biodiversity trends.

- Abstract
Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

- Abstract
Inland navigation in Europe is proposed to increase in the coming years, being promoted as a low-carbon form of transport. However, we currently lack knowledge on how this would impact biodiversity at large scales and interact with existing stressors. Here we addressed this knowledge gap by analysing fish and macroinvertebrate community time series across large European rivers comprising 19,592 observations from 4,049 sampling sites spanning the past 32 years. We found ship traffic to be associated with biodiversity declines, that is, loss of fish and macroinvertebrate taxonomic richness, diversity and trait richness. Ship traffic was also associated with increases in taxonomic evenness, which, in concert with richness decreases, was attributed to losses in rare taxa. Ship traffic was especially harmful for benthic taxa and those preferring slow flows. These effects often depended on local land use and riparian degradation. In fish, negative impacts of shipping were highest in urban and agricultural landscapes. Regarding navigation infrastructure, the negative impact of channelization on macroinvertebrates was evident only when riparian degradation was also high. Our results demonstrate the risk of increasing inland navigation on freshwater biodiversity. Integrative waterway management accounting for riparian habitats and landscape characteristics could help to mitigate these impacts.

- Abstract
Permanent ponds are valuable freshwater systems and biodiversity hotspots. They provide diverse ecosystem services (ESs), including water quality improvement and supply, food provisioning, and biodiversity support, despite significant pressure from multiple anthropogenic stressors and the impacts of ongoing global change. However, ponds are largely overlooked in management plans and legislation, and ecological research has focused on large freshwater ecosystems, such as rivers or lakes. Protection of ponds is often insufficient or indirectly provided via associated habitats such as wetlands. This situation is likely exacerbated by the lack of a full-scale understanding of the importance of ponds. In this review, we provide a detailed overview of permanent ponds across Europe, including their usages and the biodiversity they support. By discussing the concepts of pondscape and metacommunity theory, we highlight the importance of connectivity among and between ponds and identified fluxes of emerging insects as another ES of ponds. Those insects are rich in essential nutrients such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), delivered through them to the terrestrial environment; however, the extent and impact of this ES remains largely unexplored. Several potential stressors, especially related to ongoing global change, that influence pond diversity and integrity are discussed. We provide our insights on future pond management. Adaptive measures, taking into account the pond system per se within the pondscape, are the most promising to mitigate the loss of natural ponds and restore and conserve natural small waterbodies as refuges and diversity hotspots in increasingly urbanized landscapes.

Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

- Abstract
Permanent ponds are valuable freshwater systems and biodiversity hotspots. They provide diverse ecosystem services (ESs), including water quality improvement and supply, food provisioning, and biodiversity support, despite significant pressure from multiple anthropogenic stressors and the impacts of ongoing global change. However, ponds are largely overlooked in management plans and legislation, and ecological research has focused on large freshwater ecosystems, such as rivers or lakes. Protection of ponds is often insufficient or indirectly provided via associated habitats such as wetlands. This situation is likely exacerbated by the lack of a full-scale understanding of the importance of ponds. In this review, we provide a detailed overview of permanent ponds across Europe, including their usages and the biodiversity they support. By discussing the concepts of pondscape and metacommunity theory, we highlight the importance of connectivity among and between ponds and identified fluxes of emerging insects as another ES of ponds. Those insects are rich in essential nutrients such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), delivered through them to the terrestrial environment; however, the extent and impact of this ES remains largely unexplored. Several potential stressors, especially related to ongoing global change, that influence pond diversity and integrity are discussed. We provide our insights on future pond management. Adaptive measures, taking into account the pond system per se within the pondscape, are the most promising to mitigate the loss of natural ponds and restore and conserve natural small waterbodies as refuges and diversity hotspots in increasingly urbanized landscapes.

Antarctic environments arecharacterised with potentially high levels of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) damaging to living organisms. Aquatic organisms have different strategies to minimise their negative effects, e.g.behavioural (migrating to deeper aquatic layers) orbiochemical (photoprotection or enzymatic repair of the incurred damages). The calanoid genus Boeckella has a high level of plasticity with regard to UVR, which ensuresits wide distribution in different regions of Antarctica. Here we present a specific photoprotective reaction in the population of Boeckella poppei on the Livingston Island, Maritime Antarctica. In non-ovigerous females, we observed uniform distribution of carotenoids in the body, while these pigments were almost entirely concentrated in the oval sacs of mature females. We consider this a mechanism to protect the eggs from the teratogenic influence of the high levelof UVR in Antarctic environments. Livingston Island is the second largest island of the South Shetland Archipelago, Maritime Antarctica. Freshwater fauna in the area is scarcely studied. Previous records are limited and include habitats, which are free of permanent ice or snow cover during the austral summer. The calanoid Boeckella poppei was firstly recorded from the island in the 1990s, from the Todorina buza Lake. More recently, the species was also recorded form freshwater lakes on the Byers Peninsula, Western Livingston Island. During the 28th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition, we confirmed the presence of B. poppei in the Todorina buza Lake. In addition, we recorded the calanoid in temporary pools (i) situated on the permafrost and formed after the retreat of the Perunika Glacier and (ii) at Hannah Point. In the newly- established habitats the species was very abundant. - Abstract
Aim: Although running waters are getting recognized as important methane sources, large‐scale geographical patterns of microorganisms controlling the net methane balance of streams are still unknown. Here we aim at describing community compositions of methanogenic and methanotrophic microorganisms at large spatial scales and at linking their abundances to potential sediment methane production (PMP) and oxidation rates (PMO). Location: The study spans across 16 European streams from northern Spain to northern Sweden and from western Ireland to western Bulgaria. Taxon: Methanogenic archaea and methane‐oxidizing microorganisms. Methods: To provide a geographical overview of both groups in a single approach, microbial communities and abundances were investigated via 16S rRNA gene sequencing, extracting relevant OTUs based on literature; both groups were quantified via quantitative PCR targeting mcrA and pmoA genes and studied in relation to environmental parameters, sediment PMP and PMO, and land use. Results: Diversity of methanogenic archaea was higher in warmer streams and of methanotrophic communities in southern sampling sites and in larger streams. Anthropogenically altered, warm and oxygen‐poor streams were dominated by the highly efficient methanogenic families Methanospirillaceae, Methanosarcinaceae and Methanobacteriaceae, but did not harbour any specific methanotrophic organisms. Contrastingly, sediment communities in colder, oxygen‐rich waters with little anthropogenic impact were characterized by methanogenic Methanosaetaceae, Methanocellaceae and Methanoflorentaceae and methanotrophic Methylococcaceae and Cd. Methanoperedens. Representatives of the methanotrophic Crenotrichaceae and Methylococcaceae as well as the methanogenic Methanoregulaceae were characteristic for environments with larger catchment area and higher discharge. Antarctic environments are exposed to high levels of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) that are often detrimental to their biota. Recent studies suggest that the genus Boeckella (Copepoda, Calanoida) has a high level of plasticity in terms of its reaction to UVR, which enables its wide distribution in various water bodies in Antarctica. Boeckella poppei is common in freshwater habitats of all three main biogeographic regions in Antarctica: sub-Antarctic islands, maritime and continental. We present for the first time a specific photoprotective response in populations of B. poppei from Livingston Island, Maritime Antarctica. In non-ovigerous females and in males, we observed uniform distribution of carotenoids in the body, while these pigments were almost entirely concentrated in the ovisacs of mature females. We consider this as a means of progeny protection from the teratogenic influence of the high level of UVR in Antarctic environments. Unequivocally, such adaptation would facilitate the expansion of B. poppei on the continent through colonisation and survival in shallow freshwater habitats. Given that the Antarctic environment is dynamically changing over the past decades and the accelerated retreat of permanent ice cover is a premise for the formation of shallow ponds, B. poppei could be a suitable indicator for reflecting the ongoing global environmental changes in Antarctica. EPHEMERAL streams ,STONEFLIES ,STREAMFLOW ,CHIRONOMIDAE ,SURFACE of the earth - Abstract
Intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams drain more than 50% of the land surface on Earth. Yet, their ecology remains insufficiently understood. In Bulgaria, temporary rivers are typically small- or medium-sized rivers (national type R14), flowing in areas with sub-Mediterranean climate. We present the first data focused explicitly on macrozoobenthos from intermittent rivers in four Bulgarian river basins within the drainage of the Aegean Sea. We identified 114 taxa from nine rivers (5÷33 taxa/site), with abundance varying between 61 and 994 ind.m-2. The most common were taxa of Ephemeroptera and Chironomidae, followed by the crab Potamon ibericum. There were considerable differences among macroinvertebrates at different sites at taxon level, with similarities among samples increasing when using lower taxonomic resolution. The distinctness of communities was likely a reflection of the high variability in environmental conditions and local human impacts. Redundancy analysis identified key groups for the sites with fast flow (e.g. Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Plecoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera Varia, taxa associated with altitude and the higher share of stone substrata). Most of the river sites were classified as having high ecological status according to the Bulgarian legislation. Only the sites in the Vrabcha and Dereorman Rivers were with moderate status; these were the sites with the lowest taxon richness. We could speculate that the structuring of the benthic community was affected by other factors that have not been accounted for in the present study, i.e. great annual fluctuations in river flow, characteristic for R14, or by loading with nutrients or other pollutants. - Abstract
Large-scale studies are needed to identify the drivers of total mercury (THg) and monomethyl-mercury (MeHg) concentrations in aquatic ecosystems. Studies attempting to link dissolved organic matter (DOM) to levels of THg or MeHg are few and geographically constrained. Additionally, stream and river systems have been understudied as compared to lakes. Hence, the aim of this study was to examine the influence of DOM concentration and composition, morphological descriptors, land uses and water chemistry on THg and MeHg concentrations and the percentage of THg as MeHg (%MeHg) in 29 streams across Europe spanning from 41°N to 64 °N. THg concentrations (0.06–2.78 ng L−1) were highest in streams characterized by DOM with a high terrestrial soil signature and low nutrient content. MeHg concentrations (7.8–159 pg L−1) varied non-systematically across systems. Relationships between DOM bulk characteristics and THg and MeHg suggest that while soil derived DOM inputs control THg concentrations, autochthonous DOM (aquatically produced) and the availability of electron acceptors for Hg methylating microorganisms (e.g. sulfate) drive %MeHg and potentially MeHg concentration. Overall, these results highlight the large spatial variability in THg and MeHg concentrations at the European scale, and underscore the importance of DOM composition on mercury cycling in fluvial systems.

Hydrobiological monitoring and assessment of ecological status (potential) of eight Bulgarian reservoirs wеre carried out in 2015-2016. The water bodies are located in Ecoregion 7: West (Pchelina Reservoir) and East Aegean River Basins (Chetiridesette Izvora, Konush and Sinyata Reka Reservoirs) and Ecoregion 12: Danube River Basin (Bebresh, Telish, Gorni Dabnik and Sopot Reservoirs). We assessed their ecological potential based on hydrochemical parameters, Secchi disk transparency and chlorophyll a from pelagial samples. Semi - quantitative macrozoobenthic samples were collected from the littoral zone. We identified 102 macroinvertebrate taxa, including alien and (potentially) invasive species: Branchiura sowerbyi (Oligochaeta); Dikerogammarus villosus (Amphipoda); Dreissena polymorpha and Corbicula fluminea (Bivalvia). Based on the bioindicative role of macrozoobenthos, a set of biotic indices and metrics (Irish biotic index, total taxon number and the German trophic index PETI) were also used to estimate the ecological potential of the studied reservoirs. Our results demonstrated a mismatch between macroinvertebrate and abiotic assessment metrics. Therefore, further research is needed to improve the use of benthic macroinvertebrates as a biological quality element for the estimation of ecological potential of reservoirs in Bulgaria. Bulgaria has joined the official intercalibration (IC) in order to complete the state commitments for the classification of rivers based on Biological Quality Elements (BQE). The objective of this paper was to verify whether the present Bulgarian classification method for ecological status of large lowland (national type R7) and medium-sized lowland (national type R8) rivers was compliant with the normative definitions of the Water Framework Directive. Thus, a two-year study (2014 - 2015) on macroinvertebrate communities was conducted at 43 sites (18 from R7 and 25 from R8). Differences in qualitative and quantitative composition in the above-mentioned river types, as well as indicative potential of BQE in relation to different anthropogenic pressures were analysed. Based on alternative benchmark sites (identified using the criteria defined by the EU), the High/ Good boundary and a reference value for the Biotic index were defined. Class boundaries were in line with the results of the completed intercalibration exercise. We found a significant association between the biotic index and all three groups of pressures (land use, chemistry and hydro-morphology) and these results could be used for assessment of the ecological status. The national assessment method (based on our data) was in good agreement with the accepted methods from other member states who share the same river types within the Eastern Continental Geographical Intercalibration Group (EC-GIG). Zooplankton communities have several vital functions within lake ecosystems, including the transfer of energy and material from producers to secondary consumers. Their structure is potentially affected by both lake morphology and typology, as well as by anthropogenic changes in lakes. These communities are also sensitive to various substances in the water column, e.g. nutrients and pollutants. Thus, they have often been used as indicators to assess the condition of and changes in lentic environments. Our aim was to present first detailed data about the species composition and structure of zooplankton communities in two understudied Bulgarian reservoirs, the Konush and Sinyata Reka Reservoirs. Twelve samples were collected in spring and summer 2016. The qualitative analysis of the zooplankton revealed the presence of 40 taxa from three main taxonomic groups: Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepoda. From these, the most frequently occurring were the rotifers (53.66%), followed by the cladocerans (24.39%) and the copepods (21.95%). The established high abundance and higher species diversity of rotifers, together with the equal distribution for all zooplankton species in the samples, confirmed the eutrophic status of both reservoirs. The calanoid copepod Eurytemora velox is reported for the first time in Iceland from the Bessastaðatjörn Lake. This is the dominant crustacean species in the littoral zooplankton. The morphological features in the specimens concerning the shape and ornamentation with spines and fine short setae of leg 5 in females and males vary. Asymmetry in the spine ornamentation on the ultimate segment of leg 5 in two females was observed.

We present the first confirmed finding of the larval stage ofCalamoceras illiesiMalicky and Kumanski, 1974 (Trichoptera) from Europe where, so far, the species was known only as adults and pupae. We collected larvae from three localities in Strandzha Mountain, southeastern Bulgaria. The main morphological characteristics of the larvae from the Bulgarian populations were compared with the original description, which was made based on the material from Turkey (Sipahiler 2013). As a result, the range of the head width for the whole family, as well as the body length of all the northern hemisphere representatives of Calamoceratidae were expanded. Additionally, we recorded the greatest number of setae on the apical end of the labrum ever recorded for the family. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite becoming one of the main pressures on aquatic ecosystems globally, understanding of the ecological impacts of altered water-level regimes in lakes lags far behind that of other human disturbances (e.g. eutrophication, acidification)., We employed a multifaceted approach to explore the potential importance of water-level fluctuations (WLF) for the structure and functioning of littoral zones and multiple trait responses of primary producers and benthic consumers across a range of natural lakes., We found that lakes with high WLF had significantly more coarse littoral substrata with less coverage of macrophyte vegetation in the shallows than in lakes with low WLF. Lakes with high WLF also had greater proportions of motile diatom species and omnivorous benthic invertebrates in shallow waters, altered taxonomic and trophic structure of benthic consumers and more homogeneous algal and benthic invertebrate assemblages., Variation along the littoral depth gradient needs to be examined when assessing the impacts of hydrological pressures in lakes. We found that depth interacted with WLF in its effects on habitat structure and mediated the response of both producer and consumer benthic assemblages to WLF., Our results indicate that amplified WLF significantly affect both the structure and functioning of lake ecosystems. Given the growing importance of WLF as an increasingly pervasive pressure on lake ecosystems worldwide, our findings have important implications for the conservation and management of global aquatic biodiversity. Inclusion of both biological traits and sampling along a depth gradient in existing and in future monitoring programmes could improve significantly the ability to detect and predict effects of altered patterns of WLF on lake ecosystems. We studied the qualitative composition of zooplankton of the Kerid Crater Lake. We found 10 taxa from which five rotifers and two lower crustaceans. Three of the recorded species are new to the freshwater fauna of Iceland: the rotifer species Keratella cf. americana Carlin, 1943 and Colurella sulcata (Stenroos, 1898), and the crustacean harpacticoid Bryocamptus (Bryocamptus) minutus (Claus, 1863). 13. Climate action - Abstract
Globally, inland waters emit over 2 Pg of carbon per year as carbon dioxide, of which the majority originates from streams and rivers. Despite the global significance of fluvial carbon dioxide emissions, little is known about their diel dynamics. Here we present a large-scale assessment of day- and night-time carbon dioxide fluxes at the water-air interface across 34 European streams. We directly measured fluxes four times between October 2016 and July 2017 using drifting chambers. Median fluxes are 1.4 and 2.1 mmol m���2 h���1 at midday and midnight, respectively, with night fluxes exceeding those during the day by 39%. We attribute diel carbon dioxide flux variability mainly to changes in the water partial pressure of carbon dioxide. However, no consistent drivers could be identified across sites. Our findings highlight widespread day-night changes in fluvial carbon dioxide fluxes and suggest that the time of day greatly influences measured carbon dioxide fluxes across European streams.

The traditional taxonomic approach is today being supplemented by ecological classifications of phytoplankton following the concepts of functional groups (FG), morpho-functional groups (MFG), and morphology-based functional groups (MBFG). In this study, we compared the potential of all three concepts in the evaluations of phytoplankton changes in the Danube River (rkm 1 388). Redundancy analysis revealed that a higher percentage of variance is explained by using ecological classifications than by using the taxonomic approach. Diatoms were the most abundant representatives. Applying the MBFG classification, whereas all diatoms were sorted into a single group (G6), only the changes of total diatom abundance can be followed. According to the FG classification, diatoms were distributed into seven groups, among which the dominant codons were C, D, and TB, while the MFG classification separated diatoms into five groups. Different temperature requirements and sensitivity to flushing were found to be the key driving factors for the successions of dominant species within small centrics, sorted into only one group. The need for phytoplankton species integration according to their capability to cope with the specific river environments still persists and further investigations, focused on the changes of phytoplankton along the Danube River, would aid the improvement of the phytoplankton classification schemes.
