Overuse and misuse of antibiotics have caused the spread of antibiotic resistance among bacteria. The insufficiency of existing antibiotics in the combat against these resistant bacteria has necessitated the discovery of new and effective antimicrobial drugs. The discovery that bacteria synthesize various virulence factors by the quorum sensing (QS) system has suggested that QS inhibitors may be used in the fight against infectious diseases. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial and anti-QS activities of methanol and water extracts of aerial and root parts of Eremostachys moluccelloides Bunge. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the extracts were investigated against reference bacterial strains using the broth microdilution method. Anti-QS activities were examined by violacein and pyocyanin pigments inhibition and swarming motility inhibition assays against Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12472 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 bioreporter strains. The anti-biofilm activities of the extracts were tested against P. aeruginosa PAO1 using the crystal violet staining method. The MIC value (> 2000 µg/mL) of the extracts against the tested strains could not be determined. All extracts partially inhibited the swarming motility of P. aeruginosa. Methanol extract of the aerial part inhibited pyocyanin production by 81.7% without interfering with P. aeruginosa growth. The extracts had no significant inhibitory activity on biofilm formation and violacein pigment production. These results showed that the extracts of E. moluccelloides may be good anti-QS agents. Further research can be done to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these biological activities.

Few findings are available on the interaction between nanoplastic and heavy metals in plants. However, there is no report on the mechanisms for removing metal stress-mediated oxidative damage by the combination treatments of nanoplastics. To address this lack of information, polystyrene nano-plastic (PS, 100 mg L-1) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, 100 mg L-1) were hydroponically applied to Lemna minor exposed to arsenate (As, 100 mu M) for 7 days. PS or PMMA caused a reduction in the contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Mn, but the improved contents were detected in the presence of PS or PMMA plus As stress. The hormone contents (auxin, gibberellic acid, cytokinin, salicylic acid and jasmonic acid) reduced by stress were re-arranged through PS or PMMA applications. Based on chlorophyll efficiency, fluorescence kinetics and performance of PSII, the impaired photosynthesis by As stress was improved via PS or PMMA applications. This alleviation did not continue under the combined form of PS and PMMA in As-applied plants. All analyzed antioxidant activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), monodehydroascorbate reduc-tase (MDHAR) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR)) decreased or unchanged under As, PS or PMMA. Due to the inactivation of the defense system, L. minor had high levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), showing lipid peroxidation. After As toxicity, induvial applications of PS or PMMA indicated the activated enzyme capacity (SOD, POX, GST and GPX) and upregulated AsA/DHA, GSH/ GSSG and redox state of GSH, which facilitated the removal of radical accumulation. The efficiency of the antioxidant system in As + PS + PMMA-applied L. minor was not enough to remove damage induced by As stress; hereby, TBARS and H2O2 contents were similar to the As-treated group. Our findings from alone or combined application of PS and PMMA provide new information to advance the tolerance mechanism against As exposure in L. minor.

The presence of excess Cr leads to biomass loss by causing the imbalance of biochemical metabolism and inhibiting photosynthetic activity. A new critical approach to cope with Cr toxicity is the use of the rare earth elements (REEs) as an antioxidant defence system enhancer in plants. However, the effect of scandium (Sc), which is one of the REEs, is not clear enough in Lemna minor exposed to Cr toxicity. For this purpose, the photosynthetic and biochemical effects of scandium (50 μM and 200 μM Sc) treatments were investigated in Lemna minor under Cr stress (100 μM, 200 μM and 500 μM Cr). Parameters related to photosynthesis (Fv/Fm, Fv/Fo) were suppressed under Cr stress. Stress altered antioxidant enzymes activities and hormone contents. Sc applications against stress increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), NADPH oxidase (NOX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), lutathione reductase (GR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), and glutathione S-transferase (GST). In addition to the antioxidant system, the contents of indole-3- acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonic acid (JA) were also rearranged. However, in all treatment groups, with the provision of ascorbate (AsA) regeneration and effective hormone signaling, reactive oxygen species (ROS) retention which result in high hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were effectively removed. The carbon nanotube is one of the most encouraging tools in nanotechnology. However, the extent and interaction with different plant systems of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are not fully understood under stress conditions. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of MWCNT to improve tolerance to copper toxicity in maize (Zea mays). For this purpose, Zea mays was grown under exposure to exogenously applied MWCNT concentrations (50-100-250 mg L−1), individually or combined, with 50 μM copper (Cu stress) for 7 days. MWCNTs eliminated the adverse effects caused by stress on water status, gas parameters and osmotic potential state. Although stress activated the antioxidant system, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation (hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content) and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) increased because stress-applied maize was unable to perform an effective scavenging action. MWCNT applications had a strong ROS scavenging effect on maize seedlings. Under Cu stress, there were different responses on antioxidant capacity depending on MWCNT concentrations called the hormesis effect. Under stress, M50-M100 (50 and 100 mg L−1) reversed the radical accumulation by providing increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and the regeneration of ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH). The MWCNT-activated enzyme system maintained the low levels of H2O2 and TBARS contents against stress. However, after the highest MWCNT concentration (250 mg L−1) plus stress exposure, this trend could not be continued, as by represented the disrupted antioxidant capacity and the reduced AsA/DHA and GSH redox state in maize seedlings. Therefore, the levels of H2O2 and TBARS were similar to the stress ones. Our findings indicated that MWCNT provided a new potential tool against Cu stress to improve the stress tolerance mechanism in maize.

The Asteraceae is a large family, rich in ornamental, economical, and medicinally valuable plants. The current study involves the analytical and pharmacological assessment of the methanolic extracts of three less investigated Asteraceae plants, namely Echinops ritro, Centaurea deflexa, and Tripleurospermum decipiens, obtained by three different extraction methodologies viz. maceration (MAC), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and homogenizer-assisted extraction (HAE). LC-MS-MS analysis of E. ritro, C. deflexa, and T. decipiens extracts led to the identification of ca. 29, 20, and 33 metabolites, respectively, belonging to flavonoids, phenolic acids, and fatty acids/amides. Although there were significant differences in the quantitative metabolite profiles in the extracts of E. ritro and T. decipiens based on the used extraction method, no significant variation was observed in the extracts of C. deflexa in the three implemented extraction techniques. The antioxidant activities of the nine extracts were assessed in vitro using six different assays viz. DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, FRAP, PDA, and metal chelation assay (MCA). The HAE/UAE extracts of E. ritro and the UAE/ MAC extracts of C. deflexa displayed the highest antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay, while the UAE extract of T. decipiens showed the strongest antioxidant activity in both the CUPRAC and MCA assays. The enzyme inhibitory activities of the nine extracts were studied in vitro on five different enzymes viz. tyrosinase, α-amylase, α-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and butyrylcholinestrase (BChE), affecting various pathological diseases. Concerning C. deflexa, its MAC /UAE extracts showed the strongest inhibition on α-amylase, while its UAE/HAE extracts displayed strong inhibitory power on AChE. However, no significant difference was observed on their effects on tyrosinase or BChE. For T. decipiens, its UAE/HAE showed potent inhibition to α-glucosidase, MAC/ HAE significantly inhibited AChE and BChE, while UAE could strongly inhibit tyrosinase enzyme. For E. ritro, all extracts equally inhibited α-amylase and α-glucosidase, MAC/HAE strongly affected tyrosinase, HAE/MAC best inhibited BChE, while HAE inhibited AChE to a greater extent. Chemometric analysis using PCA plot was able to discriminate between the plant samples and between the implemented extraction modes. The in vitro enzyme inhibitory activities of the extracts were supported by in silico data, where metabolites, such as the lignan arctiin and the flavonoid vicenin-2, dominating the extract of C.deflexa, displayed strong binding to AChE. Similarly, chlorogenic and dicaffeoyl quinic acids, which are some of the major metabolites in the extracts of E. ritro and T. decipiens, bound with high affinity to α-glucosidase.

A biphasic dose response with excitatory responses to low concentrations and inhibitory/harmful responses to high concentrations has been defined as hormesis. However, not much is clear about the ecological effects and potential risks of REEs to plants. For this purpose, here we showed the impacts of different concentrations of nano terbium (Tb) applications (510-25-50-100-250-500 mg L-1) on the accumulation of endogeneous certain ions and hormones, chlorophyll fluoresence, photochemical reaction capacity and antioxidant activity in duckweed (Lemna minor). Tb concentrations less than 100 mg L (-1) increased the contents of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), manganese (Mn2+) and iron (Fe2+). Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm and Fv/Fo) was suppressed under 250-500 mg L-1 Tb. In addition, Tb toxicity affected the trapped energy adversely by the active reaction center of photosystem II (PSII) and led to accumulation of inactive reaction centers, thus lowering the detected level of electron transport from photosystem II (PSII) to photosystem I (PSI). On the other hand, 5-100 mg L-1 Tb enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), NADPH oxidase (NOX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Tb (5-50 mg L-1) supported the maintenance of cellular redox status by promoting antioxidant pathways involved in the ascorbateglutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle. In addition to the antioxidant system, the contents of some hormones such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), cytokinin (CK) and salicylic acid (SA) were also induced in the presence of 5-100 mg L-1 Tb. In addition, the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were controlled through ascorbate (AsA) regeneration and effective hormonal modulation in L. minor. However, this induction in the antioxidant system and phytohormone contents could not be resumed after applications higher than 250 mg L-1 Tb. TBARS and H2O2, which indicate the level of lipid peroxidation, increased. The results in this study showed that Tb at appropriate concentrations has great potential to confer tolerance of duckweed by supporting the antioxidant system, protecting the biochemical reactions of photosystems and improving hormonal regulation.

Graphene oxide has unique physiochemical properties and a large surface area. After functionalization, its shape, surface, adsorption capacity, and toxicity levels can change. The potential impacts of sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO, modified with the sulfonic group) on metabolic processes and biological pathways are unanswered questions concerning NO3- or NH4+ toxicity. To fill this gap of knowledge, in the present study, SGO (50-250-500 mg L-1) was applied to Triticum aestivum cv. Ekiz with/without 140 mM nitrate (NS stress) and 5 mM ammonium (AS stress). Both stress treatments suppressed the growth, water content, osmotic potential, and photosynthetic capacity, as detected by a decrease in the carbon assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (g(s)), intercellular CO2 concentration (C-i), and transpiration rate (E), and an increase in stomatal limitation. After stress exposure, SGO provided positive responses to these parameters. There were different responses in the antioxidant system under stress: superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POX) under NS stress; SOD, catalase (CAT) and POX under AS and NS + AS stresses. However, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation increased because lack of effective antioxidant activation. In response to NS or AS, SGO successfully regulated SOD, CAT, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and the enzyme/non-enzymes related to the AsA-GSH cycle, attenuating the high levels of H2O2, lipoxygenase (LOX) and TBARS-based damage. Along with the antioxidant system, SGO controlled the contents of NO3- or NH4+ by regulation of NPF6.3 and AMT1.2 genes. Interestingly, under NS plus AS, the alleviation action of SGO varied in a concentration-dependent manner: (i) low SGO concentration (50 mg L-1) protected the regeneration of ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) and the high activities of GST and GPX; (ii) 250 mg L-1 SGO maintained the GSH redox state and the induced activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST); (iii) the highest SGO concentration (500 mg L-1) did not eliminate H2O2 accumulation, which coincided with the increased levels of TBARS and LOX. The toxicity of the high SGO concentration was further increased in wheat with non-stress or NS plus AS stresses. In the present study, the methanolic, hydro-methanolic, dichloromethane, hexane and aqueous extracts of Salvia ceratophylla L. (Family: Lamiaceae), a lemon-scented herb, were tested for total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant activities were evaluated using a battery of assays (2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (phosphomolybdenum) and metal chelating). Enzyme inhibitory effects were investigated using acetyl- (AChE), butyryl-cholinesterase (BChE), tyrosinase, a-amylase and a-glucosidase as target enzymes. Regarding the cytotoxic abilities, HepG2, B164A5 and S17 cell lines were used. The phytochemical profile was conducted using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Our data showed that the methanolic aerial extracts possessed the highest phenolic (72.50 0.63 mg gallic acid equivalent per g) and flavonoid (43.77 1.09 mg rutin equivalent per g) contents. The hydromethanolic aerial extract showed significant DPPH radical scavenging activity (193.40 0.27 mg TE per g) and the highest reducing potential against CUPRAC (377.93 2.38 mg TE per g). The best tyrosinase activity was observed with dichloromethane root extract (125.45 1.41 mg kojic acid equivalent per g). Among the tested extracts, hexane root extract exerted the highest antimicrobial potential with a minimum inhibitory concentration value of 0.048 mg mL 1. Methanolic root extract showed the lowest cytotoxicity (28%) against HepG2 cells. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of important polyphenolic compounds including luteolin, gallic acid, rosmarinic acid, to name a few. The genus Limonium includes important halophyte plants containing a variety of bioactive compounds of therapeutic interest. In the present work, the untargeted phytochemical profiles of both aerial part and root extracts from six Limonium species namely, L. bellidifolium, L. globuliferum, L. gmelinii, L. lilacinum, L. sinuatum and L. iconicum from Turkey were determined. Furthermore, several biological activities (in vitro antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory effects) were investigated. Overall, significant amounts of total phenolics (43.64-238.18 mg g-1) and flavonoids (1.61-129.69 mg g-1) were recorded. Particularly, the root extracts of L. gmelinii, L. iconicum and L. globuliferum showed the highest total phenolic content (204.13-238.18 mg g-1), whilst the highest total flavonoid content was recorded in the root extracts of L. gmelinii (129.69 mg g-1). Overall, the tested extracts demonstrated potent radical scavenging activities in both DPPH (2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (90.10-507.94 mg g-1 and 163.39-1175.34 mg g-1, respectively). However, the highest scavenging potential (p < 0.05) was displayed by the root extracts of L. iconicum. Conversely, the metal chelating ability assay revealed that L. lilacinum root extract showed the highest activity (21.03 mg g-1). Interestingly, all the extracts were found to be active inhibitors of cholinesterases (AChE (acetylcholinesterase): 4.20-5.11 mg GALAE (galantamine equivalent) per g; BChE (butyrylcholinesterase): 3.89-10.75 mg GALAE per g), amylase (0.52-1.09 mmol ACAE (acarbose equivalent) per g) and tyrosinase (119.41-155.67 mg KAE (kojic acid equivalent) per g), unlike for glucosidase (2.31-2.41 mmol ACAE per g). Taken together, these findings demonstrated a diverse chemical profiles and biological of the extracts, to be potentially considered as phytotherapeutic or functional ingredients due to their antioxidant properties and inhibition of key enzymes involved in several diseases.

Oryza sativa L. cv. Gonen grown in hydroponic culture was treated with scandium (Sc; 25 and 50 μM) alone or in combination with salt (100 mM NaCl) and/or drought (5% PEG-6000). Stress caused a decrease in growth (RGR), water content (RWC), osmotic potential (ΨΠ), chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) and potential photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fo). Sc application prevented the decreases of these parameters. Sc also alleviated the changes on gas exchange parameters (carbon assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentrations (Ci), transpiration rate (E) and stomatal limitation (Ls)). Stress caused no increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. After induvial applied NaCl or PEG, catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) showed an enhancement in activation and tried to scavenge of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). On the other hand, in plants with the combination form of NaCl and PEG, only CAT activity was induced. Sc applications to NaCl-treated rice led to an increase of SOD, APX, glutathione reductase (GR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) as well as peroxidase (POX). Sc under NaCl could be maintained both ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) regeneration. Despite of induction of MDHAR and DHAR under Sc plus PEG, Sc did not maintain AsA redox state because of no induction in APX activity. However, GSH pool could be regenerated by induction in DHAR and GR in this group. Sc application (especially for 25 μM) in rice exposed to NaCl + PEG resulted an enhancement in APX and MDHAR and so Sc could be partially provided AsA regeneration. Since no increases in DHAR and GR were observed, GSH pool was reduced. Due to this activation of antioxidant enzymes, stress-induced H2O2 and TBARS content (lipid peroxidation) significantly decreased in rice with Sc applications. Sc in plants with stress also increased the transcript levels of OsCDPK7 and OsBG1 related to stomatal movement and signaling pathway. Consequently, Sc protected the rice plants by minimizing disturbances caused by NaCl or PEG exposure via the AsA-GSH redox-based systems.

In this study, phytochemical and pharmacological screening of the aerial part and roots extracts from Doronicum orientale Hoffm. (Asteraceae) was carried out. Plant extracts were obtained using solvents of different polarity (hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, ethanol/water, water) for selection the most optimal solvent for the extraction of active compounds. For instance, the extracts yielded total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the range of 12.13-45.67 mg GAE/g and 0.75-12.44 mg QE/g, respectively, while the total antioxidant capacity of the extracts determined by the phosphomolybdenum assay ranged from 0.88-2.53 mmol TE/g. HPLC/MS/MS analysis revealed 5-caffeoylquinic acid (2.52-337.05 μg/g) and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3.12-299.36 μg/g) to be the major components present in the investigated extracts. Antioxidant activity in terms of radical scavenging ability of the extracts ranged from 0.82-45.56 mg TE/g in DPPH assay and from 5.07-104.58 mg TE/g in ABTS assay. The tested extracts were found to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (aerial part: 0.50-2.33 mg GALAE/g; roots: 0.40-2.43 mg GALAE/g), while with the exception of the water extracts, the other extracts showed butyrylcholinesterase inhibition (aerial part: 2.46-5.02 mg GALAE/g; root: 2.93-4.17 mg GALAE/g). Overall, this study presented an interesting scope of this species in phytomedicine with preliminary data demonstrating some of the tested extracts to possess high bioactive contents, antioxidant potential and enzyme inhibitory activity. Thus, additional investigations are necessary to confirm their safety in herbal drug applications.

Recent studies in the agronomic field indicate that the exogenous application of polyphenols can provide tolerance against various stresses in plants. However, the molecular processes underlying stress mitigation remain unclear, and little is known about the impact of exogenously applied phenolics, especially in combination with salinity. In this work, the impacts of exogenously applied chlorogenic acid (CA), hesperidin (HES), and their combination (HES + CA) have been investigated in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) through untargeted metabolomics to evaluate mitigation effects against salinity. Growth parameters, physiological measurements, leaf relative water content, and osmotic potential as well as gas exchange parameters were also measured. As expected, salinity produced a significant decline in the physiological and biochemical parameters of lettuce. However, the treatments with exogenous phenolics, particularly HES and HES + CA, allowed lettuce to cope with salt stress condition. Interestingly, the treatments triggered a broad metabolic reprogramming that involved secondary metabolism and small molecules such as electron carriers, enzyme cofactors, and vitamins. Under salinity conditions, CA and HES + CA distinctively elicited secondary metabolism, nitrogen-containing compounds, osmoprotectants, and polyamines.

In the current study, Achillea santolinoides and Achillea aleppica aeral parts and root were extracted with ethyl acetate, methanol, and water. Detailed phytochemical profiles were obtained using UHPLC-MS, yielding the identification of hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids, phenolic acid glycosides and sugar esters, acylquinic acids, O-glycosyl flavones and flavonols, and flavonoid aglycons, among others. The antioxidant properties and enzyme inhibitory activities of the extracts were assayed with in vitro tests. The phenolic content of the water extracts was significantly higher as compared to the ethyl acetate and methanol ones. A. aleppica aerial parts methanol extract possessed highest flavonoid content (49.18 mg rutin equivalent/g). Antioxidant properties assessment revealed that the methanol extract of A. santolinoides roots actively scavenged DPPH (54.11 mg TE/g) and ABTS radicals (112.53 mg TE/g) and possessed highest reducing potential (183.55 and 129.92 mg TE/g, for CUPRAC and FRAP, respectively). The ethyl acetate extracts of aerial parts and roots of both species showed highest inhibition against BuCHE (6.07–6.76 mg GALAE/g). The ethyl acetate extract of A.santolinoides aerial part showed highest inhibition against tyrosinase (73.00 mg KAE/g). These results showed that the tested Achillea species might represent novel phytotherapeutic avenues for the management of Alzheimer’s disease and epidermal hyperpigmentation conditions, which are both associated with oxidative stress. This paper could shed light into future potential industrial applications using the tested Achillea species.

Arsenic (As) toxicity is a problem that needs to be solved in terms of both human health and agricultural production in the vast majority of the world. The presence of As causes biomass loss by disrupting the balance of biochemical processes in plants and preventing growth/water absorption in the roots and accumulating in the edible parts of the plant and entering the food chain. A critical method of combating As toxicity is the use of biosafe, natural, bioactive compounds such as hesperidin (HP) or chlorogenic acid (CA). To this end, in this study, the physiological and biochemical effects of HP (100 μM) and CA (50 μM) were investigated in Zea mays under arsenate stress (100 μM). Relative water content, osmotic potential, photosynthesis-related parameters were suppressed under stress. It was determined that stress decreased the activities of the antioxidant system and increased the level of saturated fatty acids and, gene expression of PHT transporters involved in the uptake and translocation of arsenate. After being exposed to stress, HP and CA improved the capacity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and then ROS accumulation (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were effectively removed. These phenolic compounds contributed to maintaining the cellular redox status by regulating enzyme/non-enzyme activity/contents involved in the AsA-GSH cycle. HP and CA reversed the adverse effects of excessive metal ion accumulation by re-regulated expression of the PHT1.1 and PHT1.3 genes in response to stress. Exogenously applied HP and CA effectively maintained membrane integrity by regulating saturated/unsaturated fatty acid content. However, the combined application of HP and CA did not show a synergistic protective activity against As stress and had a negative effect on the antioxidant capacity of maize leaves. As a result, HP and CA have great potentials to provide tolerance to maize under As stress by reducing oxidative injury and preserving the biochemical reactions of photosynthesis.

WOS: 000504974800006, Humic compounds like humic acid (HA) promote ecosystem health by stabilising soil structure and promoting plant development. However, the amount needed is a limiting factor. The use of biostimulants based on HA is an effective way to eliminate oxidative damage caused by heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) in plants. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of humic acid (HA; 750 and 1500 mg L-1) on growth, the osmotic potential, the antioxidant system, radical content and lipid peroxidation in wheat (Triticum aestivum) roots treated alone or in combination with Cd stress (100 and 200 mu M). Cadmium-treated wheat roots showed a reduction in growth (RGR) and the osmotic potential (Psi(Pi)) and an increase in proline content (Pro). Although 100-mu M Cd stress induced the activities of catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation in roots exposed to stress was not prevented. The membrane of roots showed stress-dependent lipid peroxidation (TBARS content). Application of HA in combination with stress alleviated RGR and Psi(Pi) by promoting water intake. Humic acid reduced levels of H2O2 and TBARS through activation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and CAT. Application of HA under stress also induced enzymes and non-enzymatic substances included in the ascorbate-glutathione cycle such as APX, monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and glutathione (GSH), in addition to which it increased GSH/GSSG ratios. WOS: 000466823000018, Ferulic acid (FA; 3-methoxy-4-hydroxycinnamic acid) is a candidate for improving plant tolerance to stress conditions through improving water solubility and antioxidant activity. To our knowledge, no study has thus far explored the potential for exogenous FA application to improve tolerance against excess boron (B) in plants. For this purpose, wheat seedlings grown in hydroponic culture were treated with FA (25 and 75 mu M) alone or in combination with B (4 and 8 mM). The results showed that B caused a decrease in water content (RWC), osmotic potential (Psi(Pi)) and proline content (Pro). FA application prevented decreases of these parameters. 8 mM B increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Superoxide anion radical (O-2(center dot-))and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) increased during B exposure, while catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities did not. However, due to increased SOD activity, FA under stress successfully decreased O-2(center dot-) content. Additionally, exogenously applied FA under 4mM B stress increased the activities of CAT and POX. While excess B in wheat leaves did not induce activities of APX, GR, monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) or dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) or increase total ascorbate (tAsA) or dehydroascorbate (DHA) contents, FA with stress did. 25 mu M FA with B remarkably maintained regeneration of ascorbate and induced contents of tAsA and GSH (including the ascorbate glutathione cycle) and induced CAT activity. Taken together, stress-induced H2O2 content significantly decreased and the scavenging of OH. increased in wheat with FA application through the activation of antioxidant enzymes. In the quest for new drugs of herbal origin, the ethyl acetate (EAE), methanol (ME), and water (WE) extracts of Crocus chrysanthus (Herb.) Herb. flowers were analyzed for their polyphenolic composition, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibitory potential. WE showed the highest antioxidant activities in all assays including metal chelating, phosphomolybdenum, FRAP, CUPRAC, ABTS and DPPH. EAE was the most effective enzyme inhibitor, exhibiting the highest inhibition against some enzymes linked to Alzheimer’s disease (cholinesterases), diabetes mellitus (α-glucosidase and α-amylase) and hyperpigmentation problems (tyrosinase). The highest total phenolics (34.99 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids content (77.58 mg RE/g) were observed in WE and ME, respectively. Eight compounds were identified in EAE, 24 in ME, and 15 in WE. Kaempferol 3-O glucoside was found in all extracts. In conclusion, C. chrysanthus flowers can be suggested as a source of bioactive components with potential use against chronic disorders caused by oxidative stress. Future in-depth studies are recommended to determine the biological effects of isolated compounds from C. chrysanthus to identify the main compounds modulating the observed activities.

The impacts of exogenous rosmarinic acid (RA, 100 μM) and/or hesperidin (HP, 100 μM) were evaluated in improving tolerance on the gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and efficiencies, phenomenological fluxes of photosystems, antioxidant system and gene expression related to the lipid biosynthesis under heat stress. The study was designed to elucidate the impacts of salinity on biochemical and physiological properties of two Escherichia coli strains (6E and S39) isolated from different sites. The strains were exposed to 600 and 1200 mM NaCl and were harvested after 12th and 24th h of incubation. The lipid peroxidation levels, osmolyte accumulation, H2O2 content and antioxidant system [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase(GR)] of the bacteria were investigated. While thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and H2O2 content of S39 has increased steadily with salinity, however, it has not changed at 600 mM NaCl concentration in strain 6E. Accumulation of the osmolytes in 6E increased depending on salinity and application time. In S39 except for glycine-betaine, contents of other osmolytes were either unchanged or decreased. Activities of SOD, CAT, POX, APX, GR and NOX have increased as compared to the control group in 6E exposed to 600 and 1200 mM salt for 12h. In S39, CAT, POX, and GR activities decreased exposed to salinity. Consequently, it can be argued that (i) the different antioxidant responses of 6E in salinity plays a key role which tend to make 6E the more tolerant (ii) this tolerance is closely related to the increased antioxidant capacity against reactive oxygen species and is related to the increased accumulation of osmolytes.
