Abstract

We use time-resolved nonlinear pump--probe measurements to reveal features of semiconductor moir\'e materials not accessible to linear spectroscopy. With an intense, red-detuned pump pulse, we generate a high density of virtual excitons or exciton--polarons in various moir\'e minibands. A broadband probe pulse in turn measures the response of all optical resonances induced by the pump-generated excitations. We generically observe a coherent blue shift originating from contact-like exciton--exciton interactions. At charge neutrality, these measurements allow us to assess the spatial overlap between different optical excitations and to observe signatures of a bound biexciton state between two different moir\'e exciton modes. In contrast to electron doped monolayers, spatially confined moir\'e attractive polarons behave as an ensemble of non-interacting two-level emitters, exhibiting an electron-density-independent ac-Stark effect. Tuning the pump laser into resonance with the attractive polaron, we demonstrate the filling of the moir\'e lattice with localized polarons and thereby realize a nonequilibrium Bose--Fermi mixture in moir\'e flat bands.

Abstract

Quantum systems of many interacting particles at low temperatures generally organize themselves into ordered phases of matter, whose nature and symmetries are captured by an order parameter. In the simplest cases, this order parameter is spatially uniform. For example, a system of localized spins with ferromagnetic interactions align themselves to a common direction and build up a macroscopic magnetization on large distances. However, non-uniform situations also exist in nature, for instance in antiferromagnetism where the magnetization alternates in space. The situation becomes even richer when the spin-carrying particles are mobile, for instance in the so-called stripe phases emerging for itinerant electrons in strongly-correlated materials. Understanding such inhomogeneously ordered states is of central importance in many-body physics. In this work, we study experimentally the magnetic ordering of itinerant spin-1 bosons in inhomegeneous spin domains at nano-Kelvin temperatures. We demonstrate that spin domains form spontaneously after a phase separation transition, \textit{i.e.} in the absence of external magnetic force, purely because of the antiferromagnetic interactions between the atoms. 18. Transcriptomic signatures of thyroid hormone disruption in the rat liver

Abstract

Thyroid hormones (THs) are crucial for metabolism and neurodevelopment. Disruption to the TH system can thus lead to a number of adverse outcomes. TH system disruption can be caused by many different mechanisms and compounds. In vivo, the effect pattern in different tissues can be a combination of chemical specific effects (mediated through other mechanisms) and the effects brought on by TH deficiency. Chemicals with known mode of action generally disturb the TH system through disruption of TH synthesis. This is the case for the thyroperoxidase (TPO) inhibitors propylthiouracil (PTU), methimazole (MMI), and amitrol (AMI). Other chemicals, such as the polybromined flame retardant mixture (DE71) and the UV-filter octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC), disrupt the TH system through a much more elusive mode of action. But emerging evidence suggest that the liver can play a role.

Abstract

Current test strategies to identify thyroid hormone (TH) system disruptors are inadequate for conducting robust chemical risk assessment required for regulation. The tests rely heavily on histopathological changes in rodent thyroid glands or measuring changes in systemic TH levels, but they lack specific new approach methodologies (NAMs) that can adequately detect TH-mediated effects. Such alternative test methods are needed to infer a causal relationship between molecular initiating events and adverse outcomes such as perturbed brain development. Although some NAMs that are relevant for TH system disruption are available–and are currently in the process of regulatory validation–there is still a need to develop more extensive alternative test batteries to cover the range of potential key events along the causal pathway between initial chemical disruption and adverse outcomes in humans. This project, funded under the Partnership for the Assessment of Risk from Chemicals (PARC) initiative, aims to facilitate the development of NAMs that are specific for TH system disruption by characterizing in vivo mechanisms of action that can be targeted by in embryo/in vitro/in silico/in chemico testing strategies. We will develop and improve human-relevant in vitro test systems to capture effects on important areas of the TH system. Furthermore, we will elaborate on important species differences in TH system disruption by incorporating non-mammalian vertebrate test species alongside classical laboratory rat species and human-derived in vitro assays.   &nbsp

Abstract

International audience; PURPOSE: Severely ill patients affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) develop circulatory failure. We aimed to report patterns of left and right ventricular dysfunction in the first echocardiography following admission to intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: Retrospective, descriptive study that collected echocardiographic and clinical information from severely ill COVID-19 patients admitted to 14 ICUs in 8 countries. Patients admitted to ICU who received at least one echocardiography between 1st February 2020 and 30th June 2021 were included. Clinical and echocardiographic data were uploaded using a secured web-based electronic database (REDCap). RESULTS: Six hundred and seventy-seven patients were included and the first echo was performed 2 [1, 4] days after ICU admission. The median age was 65 [56, 73] years, and 71% were male. Left ventricle (LV) and/or right ventricle (RV) systolic dysfunction were found in 234 (34.5%) patients. 149 (22%) patients had LV systolic dysfunction (with or without RV dysfunction) without LV dilatation and no elevation in filling pressure. 152 (22.5%) had RV systolic dysfunction. In 517 patients with information on both paradoxical septal motion and quantitative RV size, 90 (17.4%) had acute cor pulmonale (ACP). ACP was associated with mechanical ventilation (OR\,>\,4), pulmonary embolism (OR\,>\,5) and increased PaCO(2). Exploratory analyses showed that patients with ACP and older age were more likely to die in hospital (including ICU). CONCLUSION: Almost one-third of this cohort of critically ill COVID-19 patients exhibited abnormal LV and/or RV systolic function in their first echocardiography assessment. While LV systolic dysfunction appears similar to septic cardiomyopathy, RV systolic dysfunction was related to pressure overload due to positive pressure ventilation, hypercapnia and pulmonary embolism. ACP and age seemed to be associated with mortality in this cohort.
