On May 7, 1997, the Galileo orbiter flew through the magnetosphere of Ganymede and crossed flux tubes connected at both ends to the satellite. Energetic electrons, observed during this encounter by means of the Energetic Particle Detector on board Galileo, showed double loss cones and "butterfly" type pitch angle distributions, as has been noted in past publications. In addition, as the spacecraft flew toward Ganymede, both the shape and magnitude of the spectrum changed. The intensities decreased, with the greatest depletion observed at the lowest energies, and the monotonic slope characteristic of the Jovian environment was replaced by a rollover of the spectrum at the low-energy end. The spectra lead us to infer a strongly energy-dependent injection efficiency into the trapping region. As on previous encounters, the pitch angle distributions confirmed the position of the magnetopause as indicated by the magnetometer measurements, but the spectra remained Jovian until the trapping region was reached. Various physical mechanisms capable of generating the observed spectra and pitch angle distributions, including downstream reconnection insertion followed by magnetic gradient drift and absorption of the lowest-energy electrons by Ganymede and injection from Jovian flux tubes upstream are assessed.

The existence of a torus of plasma generated by sputtering from Jupiter's satellite Europa has long been suspected but never yet convincingly demonstrated. Temperature profiles from Voyager plasma observations indicate the presence of hot, possibly freshly picked-up ions in the general vicinity of the orbit of Europa, which may be interpreted as evidence for a local plasma torus. Studies of ion partitioning in the outer regions of the Io torus reveal that the oxygen to sulfur mixing ratio varies with radial distance; this may indicates that oxygen-rich matter is injected from a non-Io source, most probably Europa. We have constructed a quantitative model of a plasma torus near the orbit of Europa which takes into account plasma input from the Io torus, sputtering from the surface of Europa, a great number of ionization and charge exchange processes, and plasma loss by diffusive transport. When the transport time is chosen so that the model's total number density in consistent with the observed total plasma density, the contribution from Europa is found to be significant although not dominant. The model predicts in detail the ion composition, charge states, and the relative fractions of hot Europa-generated and (presumed) cold Io-generated ions. The results are generally consistent with observations from Voyager and can in principle (subject to limitations of data coverage) be confirmed in more detail by Ulysses.

Models of Saturnian magnetospheric processes are reviewed emphasizing the interaction of charged and neutral particles in the gaseous phase and mentioning the role of solid matter. It is found that interpretations of different Voyager datasets regarding the Saturnian magnetosphere can vary. Specific interactions examined to resolve these discrepancies include charge exchange, ion-atom interchange, isotropizing and thermalizing collisions, and interactions between magnetospheric charged particles and surface layers of the icy satellites. The latter interactions result in sputtering of the surface or atmosphere as well as neutral injections into the magnetosphere. Constraints based on known reaction rates are shown to be useful in analyzing the abundances of the water-group molecules. The composition of the magnetospheric plasma is shown to be related to the differences between the interactions of atomic and molecular plasmas with neutral matter.

The question of the neutral gas and plasma population in the region of the Kronian magnetosphere, outside the plasma mantle and inside the magnetopause, dominated by the efflux of Titan's atmosphere is considered. A model that has been used successfully to describe the inner magnetosphere is applied to this region under constraints derived from the plasma science and ultraviolet spectrometer experiments on Voyager. It is shown that it is not possible to reconcile the results of these two experiments simultaneously with the values of the atomic and molecular source strengths of the atmosphere of Titan extant in the literature. The possible sources of the discrepancy are delineated.

The paper deals with the question of the composition and spatial distribution of water group plasma in the magnetosphere of Saturn. It is suggested that the problem of the coexistence of neutral atomic hydrogen and such a plasma can be resolved if the dominant ion is taken to be H2O(+) or H3O(+). It is also suggested that this ion may provide a means of radiative cooling of the inner magnetosphere plasma which is possibly easier to realize than transport of nitrogen from Titan. As a source for this plasma in the region inward of the icy satellites, the ring atmosphere is suggested. The depleted plasma density in the domain between the Dione-Tethys torus and the ring plane crossing of Voyager may provide an explanation for the survival of the E-ring. Data are presented which indicate that H2O(+) or H3O(+) is also a favored candidate in the outer magnetosphere and that it can diffuse without loss through the hot electron gas.

The particle phenomenon observed inside the magnetic field-free cavity near the nucleus of Comet P/Halley by the Giotto Ion Mass Spectrometer High-Energy Range Spectrometer sensor is studied. The question of access to the cavity of particles ionized farther out in the coma is addressed. A quantitative model of a mechanism for creating the observed fast-ion fluxes in the cavity is presented.

The possibility of the formation of a plasma torus generated by the satellite Triton in the magnetosphere of Neptune is investigated. A set of coupled differential equations is solved that describe the evolution of material sputtered from the surface of atmosphere of Triton in the conditions likely to exist in an assumed Neptunian magnetosphere for various combinations of nitrogen and methane that may exist on Triton. The model assumes a mechanism for transport that gives upper limits for predicted torus concentrations. It is concluded that a successful detection of plasma by the Voyager Plasma Science instrument may be possible and could be an important source of information about the composition of Triton's surface and atmosphere.

A study of plasma anisotropies in Saturn's magnetosphere was conducted using data from the Voyager 1 plasma science (PLS) instrument together with an improved Voyager plasma data analysis routine of Sands (1987) and Sands and McNutt (1988). First, the degree of anisotropy required to reconcile differences in the inbound and outbound Voyager 1 plasma observations was determined. The anisotropies derived from the PLS plasma data were then compared with those required to reconcile inbound-outbound differences in plasma flux shell content. It was found that better fits to the data could be obtained if temperature anisotropies were allowed and that the magnitude of the anisotropies was roughly consistent with those required to provide azimuthal symmetry in the plasma flux tube content.

The one-dimensional continuity and momentum equations for the plasma formed in the expanding coma of a comet near the sun are studied. An analytic expression for the magnetic field configuration in the presence of outflow, photoionization, dissociative recombination, plasma fluid pressure, and friction between the ions and neutrals is obtained. It is suggested that for a Halley-type comet there will be a region sunward of the nucleus from which the magnetic field is excluded, consistent with Giotto observations. Calculations have been performed for Halley and Giacobini-Zinner type comets, and in the field-free regions it is shown that the dominant terms in the momentum equation balancing the magnetic pressure gradient are the ion neutral friction and the net mass loading momentum gain.

The 30-day reports from the Voyager Ultraviolet Spectrometer team characterize the atomic hydrogen observed near Saturn as a torus with a half width of 7 Saturnian radii. The atomic processes occurring in the inner magnetosphere are modelled, including sputtering, ionization, charge exchange, ion-atom interchange, recombination, and transport, and a neutral hydrogen source is added to test the proposal that a hydrogen cloud exists in this region. Plasma observations in the inner magnetosphere are found to be inconsistent with the presence of a dense atomic hydrogen cloud. Thus, it is concluded that the hydrogen cloud must be a torus as originally reported, and that the cloud does not extend inward to the orbits of the inner satellites of Saturn.

Rate equations for the column density of Io's atmosphere and the number density of neutral atoms and ions in the torus have been formulated in terms of surface sublimation and venting of volcanic gases, sputtering efficiency, thermal escape, and the plasma processes that take place in the torus which included electron impact ionization, charge exchange, and transport. In the limit of low volcanic activity, estimates of the densities can be obtained, and the baseline configuration that would exist in the absence of volcanic activity is found. Solution of the coupled steady state rate equations shows that the densities are sensitive, to a varying degree, to the level of Io volcanism. The steady state densities predicted by the model are consistent with a volcanic flux of no more than 10 to the 12th/sq cm per sec. This is significantly lower than the values obtained on the basis of resurfacing rates and appears to imply that surface lava flows play a major role in the resurfacing process.
