4. Instructive artificial intelligence (AI) for human training, assistance, and explainability

Abstract

We propose a novel approach to explainable AI (XAI) based on the concept of "instruction" from neural networks. In this case study, we demonstrate how a superhuman neural network might instruct human trainees as an alternative to traditional approaches to XAI. Specifically, an AI examines human actions and calculates variations on the human strategy that lead to better performance. Experiments with a JHU/APL-developed AI player for the cooperative card game Hanabi suggest this technique makes unique contributions to explainability while improving human performance. One area of focus for Instructive AI is in the significant discrepancies that can arise between a human's actual strategy and the strategy they profess to use. This inaccurate self-assessment presents a barrier for XAI, since explanations of an AI's strategy may not be properly understood or implemented by human recipients. We have developed and are testing a novel, Instructive AI approach that estimates human strategy by observing human actions. With neural networks, this allows a direct calculation of the changes in weights needed to improve the human strategy to better emulate a more successful AI. Subjected to constraints (e.g. sparsity) these weight changes can be interpreted as recommended changes to human strategy (e.g. "value A more, and value B less"). Instruction from AI such as this functions both to help humans perform better at tasks, but also to better understand, anticipate, and correct the actions of an AI. Abstract

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched a new initiative, the Open-Source Science Initiative (OSSI), to enable and support science towards openness. The OSSI supports open-source software development and dissemination. In this work, we present NASAaccess, which is an open-source software package and web-based environmental modeling application for earth observation data accessing, reformatting, and presenting quantitative data products. The main objective of developing the NASAaccess platform is to facilitate exploration, modeling, and understanding of earth data for scientists, stakeholders, and concerned citizens whose objectives align with the new OSSI goals. The NASAaccess platform is available as software packages (i.e., the R and conda packages) as well as an interactive-format web-based environmental modeling application for earth observation data developed with Tethys Platform. NASAaccess has been envisioned as lowering the technical barriers and simplifying the process of accessing scalable distributed computing resources and leveraging additional software for data and computationally intensive modeling frameworks. Specifically, NASAaccess has been developed to meet the need for seamless earth observation remote-sensing and climate data ingestion into various hydrological modeling frameworks. Moreover, NASAaccess is also contributing to keeping interested parties and stakeholders engaged with environmental modeling, accessing the information available in various remote-sensing products. NASAaccess' current capabilities cover various NASA datasets and products that include the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) data products, the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) land surface states and fluxes, and the NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP) Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) climate change dataset products.

11. The aggregation and reduction of iron minerals by the Alzheimer's disease peptide ß-amyloid (1-42) : an X-ray absorption study

Abstract

Iron is vital for healthy brain function. However when present in a redox-active form or in excess concentrations it can be toxic. Interestingly, increased levels of redox-active iron biominerals have been shown to exist in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) tissues, including lesions comprised of the AD peptide β-amyloid (Aβ). These iron phases are capable of producing reactive oxygen species, resulting in the generation of oxidative stress manifesting as neuronal injury. As oxidative stress and the accumulation of iron are recognised as early stage events in AD, the presence of redox-active iron may prove fundamental in the development of AD pathology. The origin of these redox-active iron biominerals is unclear but recent studies suggest their formation may involve the interaction of Aβ with unbound brain iron and/or the malfunction of the iron storage protein ferritin. Despite these observations, the relationship between Aβ and iron is poorly understood, and the products of Aβ/iron interaction remain unknown. In this thesis, synchrotron-based x-ray techniques are combined with traditional biological approaches to examine the interactions between Aβ and various synthetic and naturally occurring iron forms. Through this methodology Aβ is shown to incorporate ferric iron phases into its fibrillar structure in vitro, with this interaction resulting in the chemical reduction of iron into a redox-active state. Further to this, Aβ is demonstrated to disrupt ferritin structure resulting in the chemical reduction of its redox-inactive iron core in vitro. Additionally the interaction of Aβ with crystalline iron phases is shown destroy iron crystal structure. Finally, redox-active iron is shown to be associated with regions of AD pathology, including fibrillar Aβ-like structures, within a transgenic mouse model of AD in situ. These findings suggest an origin for the redox-active iron forms and oxidative stress previously witnessed in AD tissue, thereby shedding light on the process of AD pathogenesis.

12. How Should 'Quality' Technical Education and Training Be Defined? A Statement from the National Council for Occupational Education.

Abstract

Although objectively measurable achievement of outcomes is an important guide to the quality of education, the process of defining and assuring the quality of technical education and training must include consideration for the context in which technical education and training occurs. It is also critical to remember that education has two sets of clients--students and employers. The following are among 10 policy recommendations that the National Center for Occupational Education has issued regarding defining and evaluating the quality of technical education: (1) view secondary and postsecondary technical as two distinct, related, but consecutive enterprises requiring distinct but related public policy; (2) devise more flexible approaches to programming and assessment of the various institutions delivering postsecondary technical education, including community colleges; (3) develop measures of success at the postsecondary level in the context of the complex nature of its student body and institutional clientele; (4) revise federal policy on funding, training, and financial aid to reflect the increasing relevance and value of noncredit and short-term technical education and training; (5) establish separate expectations and accountability systems for secondary and postsecondary technical education; and (6) stimulate the expansion of programs facilitating coordination of secondary and postsecondary technical education, including tech prep and articulation. 14. The Relationship between Communication Apprehension and Community College Student Success.

Abstract

This study focuses on determining the relationship between communication apprehension and factors of student success for first-semester community college students. It specifically examined the relationship between levels of students' communication apprehension as determined by the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension, and indicators of student success as measured by grade point average (GPA), class completion, and persistence to enroll the next semester. The study's results pointed to variables that indicated student success. One analysis identified variables that predict academic performance as measured by GPA. It found that completion ratio, age, and gender were significant in explaining approximately 25% of the variance of academic performance. A second analysis identified variables that predicted persistence as measured by enrollment in the subsequent semester. It found that completion ratio, GPA, and age were significant in explaining approximately 80% of the variance of persistence. There was no indication of a significant relationship between communication apprehension and any of the academic or demographic variables. This finding contradicted some studies performed at four-year institutions. It is recommended that further studies of communication apprehension be pursued that specifically take into consideration the activities and processes used by an institution. Abstract

We present the design and development of an open-source web application called Water Data Explorer (WDE), designed to retrieve water resources observation and model data from data catalogs that follow the WaterOneFlow and WaterML Service-Oriented Architecture standards. WDE is a fully customizable web application built using the Tethys Platform development environment. As it is open source, it can be deployed on the web servers of international government agencies, non-governmental organizations, research teams, and others. Water Data Explorer provides uniform access to international data catalogs, such as the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science (CUAHSI) Hydrologic Information System (HIS) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Hydrological Observing System (WHOS), as well as to local data catalogs that support the WaterOneFlow and WaterML standards. WDE supports data discovery, visualization, downloading, and basic data interpolation. It can be customized for different regions by modifying the user interface (i.e., localization), as well as by including pre-defined data catalogs and data sources. Access to WDE functionality is provided by a new open-source Python package called “Pywaterml” which provides programmable access to WDE methods to discover, visualize, download, and interpolate data. We present two case studies that access the CUAHSI HIS and WHOS catalogs and demonstrate regional customization, data discovery from WaterOneFlow web services, data visualization of time series observations, and data downloading.

Scientific datasets from global-scale earth science models and remote sensing instruments are becoming available at greater spatial and temporal resolutions with shorter lag times. Water data are frequently stored as multidimensional arrays, also called gridded or raster data, and span two or three spatial dimensions, the time dimension, and other dimensions which vary by the specific dataset. Water engineers and scientists need these data as inputs for models and generate data in these formats as results. A myriad of file formats and organizational conventions exist for storing these array datasets. The variety does not make the data unusable but does add considerable difficulty in using them because the structure can vary. These storage formats are largely incompatible with common geographic information system (GIS) software. This introduces additional complexity in extracting values, analyzing results, and otherwise working with multidimensional data since they are often spatial data. We present a Python package which provides a central interface for efficient access to multidimensional water data regardless of the file format. This research builds on and unifies existing file formats and software rather than suggesting entirely new alternatives. We present a summary of the code design and validate the results using common water-related datasets and software.

Abstract

Water quality data collection, storage, and access is a difficult task and significant work has gone into methods to store and disseminate these data. We present a tool to disseminate research in a simple method that does not replace but extends and leverages these tools. The tool is not geo-graphically limited and works with any spatially-referenced data. In most regions, government agencies maintain central repositories for water quality data. In the United States, the federal government maintains two systems to fill that role for hydrological data: the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Information System (NWIS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Storage and Retrieval System (STORET), since superseded by the Water Quality Portal (WQP). The Consortium of the Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) has developed the Hydrologic Information System (HIS) to standardize the search and discovery of these data as well as other observational time series datasets. Additionally, CUAHSI developed and maintains HydroShare.org (5 May 2021) as a web portal for researchers to store and share hydrology data in a variety of formats including spatial geographic information system data. We present the Tethys Platform based Water Quality Data Viewer (WQDV) web application that uses these systems to provide researchers and local monitoring organizations with a simple method to archive, view, analyze, and distribute water quality data. WQDV provides an archive for non-official or preliminary research data and access to those data that have been collected but need to be distributed prior to review or inclusion in the state database. WQDV can also accept subsets of data downloaded from other sources, such as the EPA WQP. WQDV helps users understand what local data are available and how they relate to the data in larger databases. WQDV presents data in spatial (maps) and temporal (time series graphs) forms to help the users analyze and potentially screen the data sources before export for additional analysis. WQDV provides a convenient method for interim data to be widely disseminated and easily accessible in the context of a subset of official data. We present WQDV using a case study of data from Utah Lake, Utah, United States of America.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) can be debilitating and career-ending for horses. Current treatments offer temporary and symptomatic relief, but potentially deleterious side effects. Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMNC) are a rich source of macrophage progenitors that are anti-inflammatory and promote inflammation resolution. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of intra-articular BMNC therapy to improve clinical signs of naturally occurring equine OA. Horses presenting with clinical and radiographic evidence of moderate OA in a single joint were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: saline (negative control), triamcinolone (positive control), or BMNC (treatment group). Horses were subjectively and objectively evaluated for lameness and synovial fluid collected (cytology and cytokine/growth factor quantification) at 0, 7, and 21 days post-injection.
