Discovering alternative ways to drive domain wall (DW) dynamics is crucial for advancing spintronic applications. Here we demonstrate via atomistic spin dynamics simulations that optical torques can efficiently drive 90^{\circ} DWs in the Mn2Au antiferromagnet but their spatial symmetry forbids the motion of 180^{\circ} walls. In the steady-state regime, the kinematics display special relativity signatures accessed for low laser intensities. At velocities higher than the magnonic limit, the DW enters a proliferation regime in which part of its relativistic energy is invested into the nucleation of novel magnetic textures. Our investigation contributes towards the fundamental understanding of opto-magnetic effects, supporting the development of next generation, all-optically controlled antiferromagnetic spintronics.

An antiferromagnet emits spin currents when time-reversal symmetry is broken. This is typically achieved by applying an external magnetic field below and above the spin-flop transition or by optical pumping. In this work we apply optical pump-THz emission spectroscopy to study picosecond spin pumping from metallic FeRh as a function of temperature. Intriguingly we find that in the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase the laser pulse induces a large and coherent spin pumping, while not crossing into the ferromagnetic phase. With temperature and magnetic field dependent measurements combined with atomistic spin dynamics simulations we show that the antiferromagnetic spin-lattice is destabilised by the combined action of optical pumping and picosecond spin-biasing by the conduction electron population, which results in spin accumulation. We propose that the amplitude of the effect is inherent to the nature of FeRh, particularly the Rh atoms and their high spin susceptibility. We believe that the principles shown here could be used to produce more effective spin current emitters. Our results also corroborate the work of others showing that the magnetic phase transition begins on a very fast picosecond timescale, but this timescale is often hidden by measurements which are confounded by the slower domain dynamics.

The Arrhenius law predicts the transition time between equilibrium states in physical systems due to thermal activation, with broad applications in material science, magnetic hyperthermia and paleomagnetism where it is used to estimate the transition time and thermal stability of assemblies of magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetite is a material of great importance in paleomagnetic studies and magnetic hyperthermia but existing estimates of the attempt frequency $f_0$ vary by several orders of magnitude in the range $10^7-10^{13}$ Hz, leading to significant uncertainty in their relaxation rate. Here we present a dynamical method enabling full parameterization of the Arrhenius-N\'eel law using atomistic spin dynamics. We determine the temperature and volume dependence of the attempt frequency of magnetite nanoparticles with cubic anisotropy and find a value of $f_0 = 0.562 \pm 0.059$ GHz at room temperature. For particles with enhanced anisotropy we find a significant increase in the attempt frequency and a strong temperature dependence suggesting an important role of anisotropy. The method is applicable to a wide range of dynamical systems where different states can be clearly identified and enables robust estimates of domain state stabilities, with particular importance in the rapidly developing field of micromagnetic analysis of paleomagnetic recordings where samples can be numerically reconstructed to provide a better understanding of geomagnetic recording fidelity over geological time scales.

The microscopic origin of the topological magnon band gap in CrI$_3$ ferromagnets has been a subject of controversy for years since two main models with distinct characteristics, i.e., Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and Kitaev, provided possible explanations with different outcome implications. Here we investigate the angular magnetic field dependence of the magnon gap of CrI$_3$ by elucidating what main contributions play a major role in its generation. We implement stochastic atomistic spin dynamics simulations to compare the impact of these two spin interactions on the magnon spectra. We observe three distinct magnetic field dependencies between these two gap opening mechanisms. First, we demonstrate that the Kitaev-induced magnon gap is influenced by both the direction and amplitude of the applied magnetic field, while the DM-induced gap is solely affected by the magnetic field direction. Second, the position of the Dirac cones within the Kitaev-induced magnon gap shifts in response to changes in the magnetic field direction, whereas they remain unaffected by the magnetic field direction in the DM-induced gap scenario. Third, we find a direct-indirect magnon band-gap transition in the Kitaev model by varying the applied magnetic field direction. These differences may distinguish the origin of topological magnon gaps in CrI$_3$ and other van der Waals magnetic layers. Our findings pave the way for exploration and engineering topological gaps in van der Waals materials.

Sample size calculations play a central role in study design because sample size affects study interpretability, costs, hospital resources, and staff time. For most veterinary orthopaedic risk-factor studies, either the sample size calculation or the post-hoc power calculation assumes the disease status of control subjects is perfectly ascertained, when it may not be. That means control groups may be mixtures of both unaffected cases and some unidentified affected cases. In this study, we demonstrate the consequences of using misclassified groups as control groups on the power of risk association tests, with the intent of showing that control groups with even small misclassification rates can reduce the power of association tests. In addition, we offer a range of correction factors to adjust sample size calculations back to 80% power. This was a simulation study using study designs from published orthopaedic risk-factor studies. The approach was to use their designs but simulate the data to include known proportions of misclassified affected subjects in the control group. The simulated data was used to calculate the power of a risk-association test. We calculated powers for several study designs and misclassification rates and compared them to a reference model. Treating misclassified data as disease-negative only always reduced statistical power compared to the reference power, and power loss increased with increasing misclassification rate. For this study, power could be improved back to 80% by increasing the sample size by a factor of 1.1 to 1.4. Researchers should use caution in calculating sample sizes for risk-factor studies and consider adjustments for estimated misclassification rates.

Two-dimensional magnets could potentially revolutionize information technology, but their potential application to cooling technology and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a material down to the monolayer limit remain unexplored. Herein, we reveal through multiscale calculations the existence of giant MCE and its strain tunability in monolayer magnets such as CrX$_3$ (X=F, Cl, Br, I), CrAX (A=O, S, Se; X=F, Cl, Br, I), and Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. The maximum adiabatic temperature change ($\Delta T_\text{ad}^\text{max}$), maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change, and specific cooling power in monolayer CrF$_3$ are found as high as 11 K, 35 $\mu$Jm$^{-2}$K$^{-1}$, and 3.5 nWcm$^{-2}$ under a magnetic field of 5 T, respectively. A 2% biaxial and 5% $a$-axis uniaxial compressive strain can remarkably increase $\Delta T_\text{ad}^\text{max}$ of CrCl$_3$ and CrOF by 230% and 37% (up to 15.3 and 6.0 K), respectively. It is found that large net magnetic moment per unit area favors improved MCE. These findings advocate the giant-MCE monolayer magnets, opening new opportunities for magnetic cooling at nanoscale.

Controlling the magnetic order of antiferromagnets is challenging due to their vanishing net magnetization. For this reason, the study of local spin textures in antiferromagnets is restricted by the difficulty in nucleating such states. Here, using atomistic simulations we demonstrate a method for nucleating localized spin textures in the grains of thin film antiferromagnet, $\gamma$-IrMn$_3$. Utilising the exchange bias coupling between a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet, we set the spin texture in the latter from a predefined spin texture in the former by means of a thermal cycling procedure. The local textures set in the antiferromagnetic grains are shown to be stable against field perturbations. We also discuss how various material parameters affect the efficiency of the setting and the characteristics of these set textures. The setting of antiferromagnetic spin textures provides a potential route to antiferromagnetic spintronic devices with non-collinear spin states such as skyrmions, bubbles and domain walls.

Modern I/O applications that run on HPC infrastructures are increasingly becoming read and metadata intensive. However, having multiple concurrent applications submitting large amounts of metadata operations can easily saturate the shared parallel file system's metadata resources, leading to overall performance degradation and I/O unfairness. We present PADLL, an application and file system agnostic storage middleware that enables QoS control of data and metadata workflows in HPC storage systems. It adopts ideas from Software-Defined Storage, building data plane stages that mediate and rate limit POSIX requests submitted to the shared file system, and a control plane that holistically coordinates how all I/O workflows are handled. We demonstrate its performance and feasibility under multiple QoS policies using synthetic benchmarks, real-world applications, and traces collected from a production file system. Ultrafast manipulation of magnetic order has challenged our understanding the fundamental and dynamic properties of magnetic materials. So far single shot magnetic switching has been limited to ferrimagnetic alloys and multilayers. In ferromagnetic (FM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) bilayers, exchange bias (He) arises from the interfacial exchange coupling between the two layers and reflects the microscopic orientation of the antiferromagnet. Here we demonstrate the possibility of single shot switching of the antiferromagnet (change of the sign and amplitude of He) with a single femtosecond laser pulse in IrMn/CoGd bilayers. We demonstrate the switching for a wide range of fluences for different layer thicknesses and compositions. Atomistic simulations predict ultrafast switching and recovery of the AFM magnetization on a timescale of 2 ps. These results provide the fastest and the most energy-efficient method to set the exchange bias and pave the way to potential applications for ultrafast spintronic devices.

We present a general approach to the derivation of the effective anisotropy field which determines the dynamical behaviour of magnetic spins according to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The approach is based on the gradient in spherical polar coordinates with the final results being expressed in Cartesian coordinates as usually applied in atomistic and micromagnetic model calculations. The approach is generally valid for all orders of anisotropies including higher order combinations of azimuthal and rotational anisotropies often found in functional magnetic materials such as permanent magnets and an emerging class of antiferromagnetic materials with applications in spintronics. Anisotropies are represented in terms of spherical harmonics which have the important property of rational temperature scaling. We have computationally studied the properties of higher-order magnetic anisotropy constants in an L10/A1-FePt coreshell system which is characterized by a strong second-order 2-ion Fe-Pt anisotropy component. We show that the coreshell structure induces an unexpected fourth-order anisotropy constant K2 the magnitude of which varies non-monotonically with the core-size ratio R reaching a peak at R = 0.50. Furthermore, we find that K2 scales with the normalized magnetization by (M/Ms)^2.2 at temperatures below the Curie temperature - a remarkable deviation from the established Callen-Callen theory which instead predicts a scaling exponent of 10. The Mermin-Wagner theorem states that long-range magnetic order does not exist in one- or two-dimensional (2D) isotropic magnets with short-ranged interactions. The theorem has been a milestone in magnetism and has been driving the research of recently discovered 2D van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials from fundamentals up to potential applications. In such systems, the existence of magnetic ordering is typically attributed to the presence of a significant magnetic anisotropy, which is known to introduce a spin-wave gap and circumvent the core assumption of the theorem. Here we show that in finite-size 2D vdW magnets typically found in lab setups (e.g., within millimetres), short-range interactions can be large enough to allow the stabilisation of magnetic order at finite temperatures without any magnetic anisotropy for practical implementations. We demonstrate that magnetic ordering can be created in flakes of 2D materials independent of the lattice symmetry due to the intrinsic nature of the spin exchange interactions and finite-size effects in two-dimensions. Surprisingly we find that the crossover temperature, where the intrinsic magnetisation changes from superparamagnetic to a completely disordered paramagnetic regime, is weakly dependent on the system length, requiring giant sizes (e.g., of the order of the observable universe ~10$^{26}$ m) in order to observe the vanishing of the magnetic order at cryogenic temperatures as expected from the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Our findings indicate exchange interactions as the main driving force behind the stabilisation of short-range order in 2D magnetism and broaden the horizons of possibilities for exploration of compounds with low anisotropy at an atomically thin level.

Language models are increasingly attracting interest from writers. However, such models lack long-range semantic coherence, limiting their usefulness for longform creative writing. We address this limitation by applying language models hierarchically, in a system we call Dramatron. By building structural context via prompt chaining, Dramatron can generate coherent scripts and screenplays complete with title, characters, story beats, location descriptions, and dialogue. We illustrate Dramatron's usefulness as an interactive co-creative system with a user study of 15 theatre and film industry professionals. Participants co-wrote theatre scripts and screenplays with Dramatron and engaged in open-ended interviews. We report critical reflections both from our interviewees and from independent reviewers who watched stagings of the works to illustrate how both Dramatron and hierarchical text generation could be useful for human-machine co-creativity. Finally, we discuss the suitability of Dramatron for co-creativity, ethical considerations -- including plagiarism and bias -- and participatory models for the design and deployment of such tools., Comment: 102 pages, 7 figures

Advanced magnetic recording paradigms typically use large temperature changes to drive switching which is detrimental to device longevity, hence finding non-thermal routes is crucial for future applications. By employing atomistic spin-lattice dynamics simulations, we show efficient coherent magnetisation switching triggered by THz phonon excitation in insulating single species materials. The key ingredient is excitation near the $P$-point of the spectrum in conditions where spins typically cannot be excited and when manifold $k$ phonon modes are accessible at the same frequency. Dynamic simulations of spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques are increasingly important for a wide range of spintronic devices including magnetic random access memory, spin-torque nano-oscillators and electrical switching of antiferromagnets. Here we present a computationally efficient method for the implementation of spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques within the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation used in micromagnetic and atomistic simulations. We consolidate and simplify the varying terminology of different kinds of torques into a physical action and physical origin that clearly shows the common action of spin torques while separating their different physical origins. Our formalism introduces the spin torque as an effective magnetic field, greatly simplifying the numerical implementation and aiding the interpretation of results. The strength of the effective spin torque field unifies the action of the spin torque and subsumes the details of experimental effects such as interface resistance and spin Hall angle into a simple transferable number between numerical simulations. We present a series of numerical tests demonstrating the mechanics of generalised spin torques in a range of spintronic devices. This revised approach to modelling spin-torque effects in numerical simulations enables faster simulations and a more direct way of interpreting the results, and thus it is also suitable to be used in direct comparisons with experimental measurements or in a modelling tool that takes experimental values as input.

We employ an atomistic model using a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg Hamiltonian exchange to study computationally the dependence of the Curie temperature of L10-FePt on finite-size and surface effects in Heat-assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) media. We demonstrate the existence of a size threshold at 3.5nm below which the impact of finite-size effects start to permeate into the center of the grains and contribute to the reduction of the Curie temperature. We find a correlation between the Curie temperature and the percentage of atomistic bonds lost on the surface as a function of grain size, which can be extended to apply to not only L10-FePt but also generic magnetic systems of any crystal structure. The investigation gives insight into finite-size effects which, because the inevitable grain size dispersion leads to an irreducible contribution to a dispersion of the Curie temperature, has been predicted to be a serious limitation of HAMR., Comment: Main text: 8 pages, 7 figures; Supplemental: 2 pages, 2 figures.
