Abstract

One important question in neuroscience is how global behavior in a brain network emerges from the interplay between network connectivity and the neural dynamics of individual nodes. To better understand this theoretical relationship, we have been exploring a simplified modeling approach in which we equip each node with discrete quadratic dynamics in the complex plane, and we study the emerging behavior of the resulting complex quadratic network (CQN). The long-term behavior of CQNs can be represented by asymptotic fractal sets with specific topological signatures going far beyond those described in traditional single map iterations. In this study, we illustrate how topological measures of these asymptotic sets can be used efficiently as comprehensive descriptors and classifiers of dynamics in tractography-derived connectomes for human subjects. We investigate to what extent the complex geometry of these sets is tied to network architecture (on one hand) and to the network behavior (on the other). This helps us understand the mechanics of the relationship between the subject's brain function, physiology and behavior and their underlying connectivity architecture., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 29 references

Abstract

We study asymptotic dynamics in networks of coupled quadratic nodes. While single map complex quadratic iterations have been studied over the past century, considering ensembles of such functions, organized as coupled nodes in a network, generate new questions with potentially interesting applications to the life sciences. We investigate how traditional Fatou-Julia results may generalize in the case of networks. We discuss extensions of concepts like escape radius, Julia and Mandelbrot sets (as parameter loci in $\mathbb{C}^n$, where $n$ is the size of the network). We study topological properties of these asymptotic sets and of their two-dimensional slices in $\mathbb{C}$ (defined in previous work). We find that, while network Mandelbrot sets no longer have a hyperbolic bulb structure, some of their geometric landmarks are preserved (e.g., the cusp always survives), and other properties (such as connectedness) depend on the network structure. We investigate possible extensions of the relationship between the Mandelbrot set and the Julia set connectedness loci in the case of network dynamics. We discuss possible classifications of asymptotic behavior in networks based on their underlying graph structure, using the geometry of Julia or Mandelbrot sets as a classifier. Finally, we propose a method for book-keeping asymptotic dynamics simultaneously over many networks with a common graph-theoretical property. \emph{Core} Julia and Mandelbrot sets describe statistically average asymptotic behavior of orbits over an entire collection of configurations., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, 3 appendices

10. Quantitative Morphological Variation in the Orange and White Fringed Orchids (Platanthera) in the Eastern US

Abstract

The orange and white fringed orchids in section Blephariglottis of Platanthera subg. Blephariglottis are among the showiest terrestrial orchids in the US. Still, frequent hybridization between closely related species can make field identification difficult, and differing perceptions of species boundaries challenge a common understanding of which taxa should be considered distinct entities. In order to evaluate species boundaries in the section, we explored quantitative morphological variation within and among taxa by assessing seven floral traits in populations of five species and three putative hybrids across the eastern US from Pennsylvania to Texas. We found that floral traits generally discriminated well among taxa, albeit with some overlap for closely related taxa. Two of the hybrids displayed traits intermediate to those of their parents, whereas the third could not be differentiated from one of its parents. The data revealed considerable intraspecific variation along a north–south gradient for some taxa, which could be related to adaptation to different pollinator faunas across the distribution area. We advocate that descriptions of species, subspecies and varieties should be based on quantitative data across distribution area to cover the breadth of intraspecific variation and avoid artificial splitting due to geographically limited sampling.

16. Asymptotic sets in networks of coupled quadratic nodes.

Abstract

We study asymptotic behaviour in networks of |$n$| nodes with discrete quadratic dynamics. While single map complex quadratic iterations have been studied over the past century, considering ensembles of such functions, organized as coupled nodes in an oriented network, generates new questions with potentially interesting applications to the life sciences. We discuss extensions of traditional results from single map iterations, such as the existence of an escape radius; we then investigate whether crucial information about the network is encoded in the behaviour of the critical orbit. We use two previously defined objects: the network Mandelbrot set (i.e. the set of quadratic parameters in |$\mathbb{C}^n$| for which the network is post-critically bounded in |$\mathbb{C}^n$|⁠) and the equi-M set (the diagonal slice of the network Mandelbrot set, corresponding to all nodes using the identical quadratic map). Using a combination of analytical techniques and numerical simulations, we study topological properties of the equi-M set, with the aim of understanding which of these properties are affected by altering different aspects of the network architecture and node-to-node connectivity strengths. We find that, while equi-M sets no longer have a hyperbolic bulb structure, some of their geometric landmarks (e.g. the cusp) are preserved for any network configuration, and other properties (such as connectedness) depend on the network structure. We further study the relationship between the Mandelbrot set and the connectedness locus of the network uni-Julia set (defined as the set of |$z_0 \in \mathbb{C}$| for which all nodes remain bounded when they are all initialed identically at |$z_0$|⁠). We discuss using the geometry of uni-Julia or equi-M sets to classify asymptotic behaviour in networks based on their underlying graph structure. Finally, we propose using a form of averaging uni-Julia and equi-M sets to describe statistically the likelihood of a specific asymptotic behaviour, considered over an entire collection of configurations. We discuss which analytical results can be further supported or refined in the future. We also revisit the ties with applications to the life sciences. We explore how this theoretical study may inform on using similar methods to understand natural systems with more complex architecture and node-wise dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Hip fractures are a common type of fragility fracture that afflict 293,000 Americans (over 5,000 per week) and 35,000 Canadians (over 670 per week) annually. Despite the large population impact the optimal fixation technique for low energy femoral neck fractures remains controversial. The primary objective of the FAITH study is to assess the impact of cancellous screw fixation versus sliding hip screws on rates of revision surgery at 24 months in individuals with femoral neck fractures. The secondary objective is to determine the impact on health-related quality of life, functional outcomes, health state utilities, fracture healing, mortality and fracture-related adverse events. FAITH is a multi-centre, multi-national randomized controlled trial utilizing minimization to determine patient allocation. Surgeons in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia will recruit a total of at least 1,000 patients with low-energy femoral neck fractures. Using central randomization, patients will be allocated to receive surgical treatment with cancellous screws or a sliding hip screw. Patient outcomes will be assessed at one week (baseline), 10 weeks, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months post initial fixation. We will independently adjudicate revision surgery and complications within 24 months of the initial fixation. Outcome analysis will be performed using a Cox proportional hazards model and likelihood ratio test. This study represents major international efforts to definitively resolve the treatment of low-energy femoral neck fractures. This trial will not only change current Orthopaedic practice, but will also set a benchmark for the conduct of future Orthopaedic trials. Abstract

The study revolves around the delivery of an ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) program on conflict management in the workplace to a small group of adult learners studying in a private educational institution in Sydney, Australia. The program was of four days¡¯ duration, and was delivered over a four-week period. It involved both in-class and out-of-class tasks, and required learners to analyse their own discourse practices, those of other learners, and those of the speech community in which they were living. The program had two principle objectives. Firstly, it asked whether learners are able to modify their discourse practices at will in order to achieve successful negotiation outcomes. Secondly, it explored the effect of deliberately altered discourse styles on perceptions of learners held by speech community members. The methodology employed to achieve these objectives was ethnographic in nature and involved the following processes: 1. Learners were video-taped negotiating with other learners before and after the program. 2. Learners undertook the program aimed at increasing their ability to negotiate in business environments using culturally appropriate spoken language in conjunction with compatible prosodic and paralinguistic features as well as conversation management strategies. Learners kept diaries of their experiences and self-evaluation, and were interviewed following the course. 3. A group of nine native speakers of English viewed the 'before' and 'after' video-tapes and completed a survey aimed at collecting and quantitatively measuring (change in) their perceptions of the learners. This change was statistically analysed using a repeated-measures t test. The effect proved statistically significant overall; t(80) = 1.990, p&gt.01, two-tailed. 4. The 'before' and 'after' negotiations were then analysed by the researcher using ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis, modified to include some aspects of facial expression. The implications of the findings for teaching 'Business English', 'Global English' and 'Speaking' more generally are then discussed.
