In gauge theories, the running of the anomalous dimension of a fermion bilinear operator is believed to lead to chiral symmetry breaking when gamma=1. Naively using perturbative results to judge when gamma=1 leads to the possibility of large dynamically generated mass hierarchies in models with both two index symmetric representation and fundamental representation fermions. In this paper we study a holographic model of this physics to predict the separation in scales in the meson spectrum. We study SU(Nc) theories at different Nc with one flavour of two index symmetric representation as a function of the number of fundamental fermion flavours NfF. The largest hierarchy we find is for Nc=7 and NfF=22 where the rho mesons made of the two different representations are separated in scale by a factor of 13. For general Nc the hierarchy can be made greater than 7 by tuning NfF. We display the hierarchy as a function of NfF and investigate the quark mass dependence. These predictions do depend on the extrapolation of gamma from the perturbative regime - even in a pessimistic scenario a distinct gap can be achieved., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We study bubble walls in the holographic D3/probe D7 system that is dual to strongly coupled quark dynamics. We work to construct holographic descriptions of bubble wall junctions where we can tune the bubble wall height and pressure difference in a theory at zero temperature and density. We study the system in the presence of a background axial vector field b that induces a Weyl semi-metal, massless phase and a background magnetic field B which favours mass generation. We find a first order transition line in the mass-$B$ plane, at fixed b, ending at a critical point. We present some preliminary solutions of PDEs that describe the motion of one dimensional bubble walls in this theory, with a stationary initial condition - large pressure differences accelerate the wall to the speed of light whilst when the pressure difference is small the wall slumps to an interpolating solution. We also take the first steps to include temperature and see evidence of thermal drag slowing the wall motion. Slump configurations at finite temperature show some signs of a back pressure wave against the wall motion., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

We study Sp(2$N_c$) gauge dynamics with two Dirac fermion flavours in the fundamental representation. These strongly coupled systems underlie some composite Higgs models with a global symmetry breaking pattern SU(4)$\rightarrow$Sp(4), leading to a light quartet of pseudo-Goldstone bosons that can play the role of the Higgs. Including four-fermion interactions can rotate the vacuum to a technicolour breaking pattern. Using gauge/gravity duality, we study the underlying gauge dynamics. Our model incorporates the $N_c$-specific running of the fermion anomalous dimension and can thus distinguish between specific gauge groups. We determine the bound-state spectrum of the UV SU(4)$\rightarrow$Sp(4) symmetry breaking model, also including fermion masses and mass splitting, and display the $N_c$ dependence. In holographic models of QCD, the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark bilinear operator leads to chiral symmetry breaking when gamma=1 and the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound is violated. In that case, the running drives the sigma meson mass tachyonic inducing the chiral symmetry breaking. Here we include the running anomalous dimension in the computation of the spectrum of bound states associated with other operators made of light quarks, such as the nucleon and exotic sexaquark states. We show that including the one loop gauge theory running can have substantial effects on the predictions. For example, the nucleon mass to rho mass ratio is improved and lies much closer to the observed value. A similar result is obtained for the Lambda and Xi baryons when strange quarks are included. A uuddss sexaquark state with a low enough mass to make it stable can be achieved, but this depends on the input assumptions about the running dimension., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We investigate a holographic model for both spontaneous and explicit symmetry breaking of non-abelian flavour symmetries. This consists of a bottom-up model inspired by the top-down D3/D7 probe brane model that incorporates the running anomalous dimensions of the fields. We ensure that in the holographic bulk, the full non-abelian flavour symmetries for massless quarks are present. The quark masses are spontaneously generated field values in the bulk and there is a resultant bulk Higgs mechanism. We provide a numerical technique to find the mass eigenvalues for a system of coupled holographic fields. We test this approach using an analytic model of ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric matter. We apply this approach to two-flavour QCD with both $u-d$ quark mass splitting and multi-trace bulk action terms that are expected to break $U(N_f)_V$ to $SU(N_f)_V \times U(1)_V$ away from large $N_c$. We also discuss three-flavour QCD with strange quark mass splitting and applications to more exotic symmetry breaking patterns of potential relevance for composite Higgs models.

We study thermal transitions in a Domain Wall AdS/QCD model. The model is based on the D5/probe D7 system with a discontinuous mass profile which restricts chiral fermions to 3+1 dimensional domain walls. Fluctuations on the domain wall are dual to the quark mass and condensate and reveal the relation between domain wall separation and the quark mass. The massive quarks exhibit a second order thermal, meson melting transition. Witten's multi-trace prescription can be used to interpret these configurations as having a dynamical mass from a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio interaction - here the transition is first order. Confinement can be introduced into the gauge sector by compactifying one direction of the D5. Compactification induces chiral symmetry breaking and there is a first order thermal restoration transition. The "periodic table" of strongly coupled gauge theories remains only sketchily understood. Holography has developed to the point where bottom up constructions can describe the spectrum of individual gauge theories (based on assumptions of their running) including quarks in different representations and higher dimension operators. I highlight the method with a "perfected" version of an AdS dual of QCD and results for composite higgs models with two representations of quarks. The method raises questions about the degree to which energy scales can be split in generic gauge theories including whether confinement and chiral symmetry breaking are linked., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. We construct a new holographic description of QCD using domain wall fermions. The construction consists of probe D7 branes in a D5 brane geometry describing quarks on a 4+1d defect in a 5+1d gauge theory. We then compactify one dimension of the D5 to introduce confinement in the gauge degrees of freedom. In addition we allow a spatial dependent mass term for the D7 brane quarks to isolate chiral fermions on 3+1d domain walls. The D7 world volume fields, when restricted to the domain wall position, provide an AdS/QCD description. We compute the spectrum and compare to data. We study domain wall fermions and their condensation in the D3/probe D7 system. A spatially dependent mass term for the N=2 hypermultiplet can be arranged to isolate distinct two component fermions on two 2+1 dimensional domain walls. We argue that the system shows condensation/mass generation analogous to the D3/probe D5 anti-D5 system. The chiral condensate and pion mass can be directly computed on the domain wall. We provide evidence that these systems with the domains separated by a width w have a bare (current) quark mass that scales as 1/w when the spatial dependent mass is large. Adding a magnetic field does not induce chiral symmetry breaking between the separated domain wall fermions, but a similar phenomenological dilaton factor can be made strong enough to introduce spontaneous symmetry breaking. We show a Gell-Man-Oakes-Renner relation for the pions in that case and also for the case where the D7 probe is in a back-reacted dilaton flow geometry. The vacuum configurations can also be interpreted as having a spontaneously generated mass by a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio four fermion operator, depending on the choice of boundary conditions on fluctuations, according to Witten's multi-trace prescription., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We review arguments that chiral symmetry breaking is triggered when the quark bilinear condensate's dimension passes through one ($\gamma=1$). This is supported by gap equations and more recently holographic models. Confinement may then be a separate property of the pure Yang-Mills theory below the scale of the dynamically generated quark mass, occurring at the scale of the pole in the deep IR running. Here, we use perturbative results for the running of the gauge coupling and $\gamma$ in asymptotically free SU($N_c$) gauge theories with matter in higher dimension representations to seek the best candidate theories where confinement and chiral symmetry breaking can be maximally separated. For example, SU(2) gauge theory with a single Weyl quark in the $S_3$ (dimension 4) representation may have a factor of 20 separation in scale. Such a theory could be simulated on the lattice to test the separation. We also propose studying multi-representation theories where the higher dimension representation forms a condensate at one scale that can be quite separate from the condensation scale of the second representation matter. The confinement scale would presumably be below the second scale. A holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking is used to study the dynamics plus the meson and baryon spectrum of the underlying strong dynamics in composite Higgs models. The model is inspired by top-down D-brane constructions. We introduce this model by applying it to $N_f=2$ QCD. We compute meson masses, decay constants and the nucleon mass. The spectrum is improved by including higher dimensional operators to reflect the UV physics of QCD. Moving to composite Higgs models, we impose perturbative running for the anomalous dimension of the quark condensate in a variety of theories with varying number of colors and flavours. We compare our results in detail to lattice simulations for the following theories: $SU(2)$ gauge theory with two Dirac fundamentals; $Sp(4)$ gauge theory with fundamental and sextet matter; and $SU(4)$ gauge theory with fundamental and sextet quarks. In each case, the holographic results are encouraging since they are close to lattice results for masses and decay constants. Moreover, our models allow us to compute additional observables not yet computed on the lattice, to relax the quenched approximation and move to the precise fermion content of more realistic composite Higgs models not possible on the lattice. We also provide a new holographic description of the top partners including their masses and structure functions. With the addition of higher dimension operators, we show the top Yukawa coupling can be made of order one, to generate the observed top mass. We present a holographic model of QCD with a first order chiral restoration phase transition with chemical potential, mu. The first order behaviour follows from allowing a discontinuity in the dual description as the quarks are integrated out below their constituent mass. The model predicts a deconfined yet massive quark phase at intermediate densities (350 MeV< mu <500 MeV), above the nuclear density phase, which has a very stiff equation of state and a speed of sound close to one. We also include a holographic description of a colour superconducting condensate in the chirally restored vacuum and study the resulting equation of state. They provides a well behaved first order transition from the deconfined massive quark phase at very high density (mu>500 MeV). We solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations with the resulting equations of state and find stable hybrid stars with quark cores. We compute the tidal deformability for these hybrid stars and show they are consistent with LIGO/Virgo data on a neutron star collision. We provide gauge/gravity dual descriptions of the strong coupling sector of composite Higgs models using insights from non-conformal examples of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We calculate particle masses and decay constants for proposed Sp(4) and SU(4) gauge theories, where there is the best lattice data for comparison. Our results compare favorably to lattice studies and go beyond those due to a greater flexibility in choosing the fermion content. That content changes the running dynamics and its choice can lead to sizable changes in the bound state masses. We describe top partners by a dual fermionic field in the bulk. Holography has allowed the exact solution of a small number of large Nc gauge theories. Amongst these is an N=2 SYM theory of quarks interacting with N=4 gauge fields. The temperature chemical potential phase diagram for this theory in the presence of a magnetic field is exactly known and shows first and second order chiral symmetry restoration transitions and a critical point. Here we extend this phase diagram to imaginary chemical potential to seek structure at small real mu and imaginary mu that help to reconstruct the large real mu phase structure. We also explore a phenomenologically deformed version of the theory where the critical point can be moved into the imaginary chemical potential plane. In particular we observe that when the transition is second order in these theories there are naturally two distinct transitions - one for the onset of density and one for chiral symmetry restoration. In addition, the phase diagram has boundaries of regions where metastable vacua exist and these boundaries, as well as the phase boundaries, converge at the critical point. These observations may point to techniques for the study of the QCD critical point either on the lattice or using heavy ion collision data., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

In Landau Fermi liquids, screened impurities support quasi-bound states, representing electrons bound to the impurity but making virtual excursions away. Signals of these quasi-bound states are electron-impurity scattering phase shifts and the corresponding resonances in cross sections. We consider large-$N$, strongly-coupled $(3+1)$-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on the Coulomb branch, where an adjoint scalar has a non-zero expectation value that breaks $SU(N) \to SU(N-1) \times U(1)$. In the holographic dual we re-visit well-known solutions for a probe D3-brane that describe this theory with a symmetric-representation Wilson line "impurity." We present evidence that the adjoint scalar screens the Wilson line, by showing that quasi-bound states form at the impurity, producing $U(1)$-impurity scattering phase shifts and corresponding resonances in cross sections. The quasi-bound states appear holographically as quasi-normal modes of probe D3-brane fields, even in the absence of a black hole horizon, via a mechanism that we argue is generic to screened defects in holography. In Hoyos et al. (arXiv:1603.02943) a holographic D3/D7 system was used to describe a deconfined yet massive quark phase of QCD at finite density, concluding that the equation of state of such a phase was not stiff enough to support exotic dense stars. That analysis used a hard quark mass to represent the dynamical mass and assumed a conformal gauge background. Here we phenomenologically adjust the D3/D7 system to include a running anomalous dimension for the quark condensate. This introduces a dynamical mechanism for chiral symmetry breaking yet the model still has a deconfined massive phase at intermediate densities. We show that these systems, dependent on the running profile in the deep IR, generate much stiffer equations of state and non-monotonic behaviour in the speed of sound. We use a holographic description of technicolor dynamics to study gauge theories that only break chiral symmetry when aided by a strong four fermion interaction. These Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) assisted technicolor models provide examples of different dynamics from walking technicolor which can, by tuning, generate a light higgs like $\sigma$ meson. We compute the vector meson ($\rho$) and axial vector meson (A) spectrum for a variety of models with techni-quarks in the fundamental representation, enlarging the available parameter space over a previous analysis of walking theories. These predictions determine the parameter space of a low energy effective description where LHC constraints from dilepton channels have already been applied. Many of the models with low numbers of electroweak doublets still lie beyond current constraints and motivate exploration of new signatures beyond dilepton for LHC and a 100 TeV proton collider., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 9 tables

Motivated by Beyond the Standard Model theories of composite fermions or top partners, we propose a holographic mechanism that generates light baryonic states in a strongly coupled gauge theory. The starting point are the fermionic fluctuations of massive probe branes embedded into AdS$_5 \times S^5$. We first consider the D3/probe D7-brane system. We derive in detail the fermionic fluctuation equations and show the supersymmetric degeneracy of the mesinos with the mesons. Here we view the fermionic mesinos as potential realizations of composite fermions or top partners. We then add higher dimension operators and study their impact on the mesino spectrum. In particular we show that the ground state mesino mass can be pushed to an arbitrarily light value by a suitable choice of the coupling of the higher dimension operator, $g$. No matter the value of $g$, the masses of higher excited states never fall below the mass of the ground state at $g=0$. We also present similar results for the supersymmetric D3/D3 and D3/D5 systems.

Precision electroweak data, a light higgs and LHC searches for new spin one particles are all very constraining on technicolor models. We use a holographic model of walking techicolor (WTC) gauge dynamics, tuned to produce a light higgs and low $S$ parameter, to estimate the range of possible vector($\rho$) and pseudo-vector($A$) resonance masses and couplings as a function of the number of colours and the number of flavours of techni-singlet and techni-doublet quarks. The resulting models predict techni-hadron masses and couplings above the current limits from dilepton resonance searches at the LHC because their masses are enhanced by the strong coupling extending into the multi-TeV range, while couplings to Standard Model fermions are partly suppressed. The models emphasize the contortions needed to continue to realize technicolor, {the need to explore new signatures beyond dilepton for LHC and also motivate a 100 TeV proton collider., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We study the holographic Dynamic AdS/QCD description of a SU($N_c$) non-abelian gauge theory with $N_f$ fermions in the fundamental representation which also have Nambu-Jona-Lasinio interactions included using Witten's multi-trace prescription. In particular here we study aspects of the dynamics in and near the conformal window of the gauge theory as described by the two loop running of the gauge theory. If the number of flavours is such that the IR fixed point lies with the anomalous dimension, $\gamma$, of the quark bilinear above one then chiral symmetry breaking occurs. Here we display a spiral in the mass - quark condensate plane describing a sequence of unstable excited states of the vacuum. An attractive NJL operator enhances the vacuum condensate but only an infinitely repulsive NJL interaction switches off the condensation completely. When $N_f$ changes so that the IR fixed point falls below one (the conformal window region) there is a numerical discontinuity in the phase structure with condensation only occurring with a super critical NJL interaction. In the conformal window, the running of $\gamma$ to a non-trivial IR fixed point is similar to walking dynamics, although chiral symmetry breaking is not triggered. In the "Ideal Walking" scenario, chiral symmetry is broken in that IR conformal regime by the NJL interaction, but the change in $\gamma$ enhances the UV condensate. That enhancement of the condensate is shown in an analytic model with a sharp change in $\gamma$ and we show equivalent numerical results for the case of the two loop running. In the model the $\sigma$ becomes massless as the gauge theory running becomes near conformal and we show it is possible to realize a light higgs-like state in Ideal Walking models., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The difficulty of describing the gauge dependent bi-quark condensate in the QCD colour superconducting phase has made it hard to construct a holographic dual of the state. To side step this problem, we argue that near the chiral restoration transition in the temperature-chemical potential plane, the strongly coupled gluons are likely completely gapped so that the colour quantum numbers of the quarks can be thought of below that gap as global indices. A standard AdS-superconductor model can then be used to analyze the fermionic gap formation. We investigate the role of four-fermion interactions, which might be used to include the gapped QCD interactions, on the vacuum and metastable vacua of the model. It turns out to be easiest to simply relate the standard interaction of the holographic superconductor to the strength of the gapped gluons. The result is a holographic description of the QCD colour superconducting phase diagram. We present holographic desciptions of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking models that incorporate the top mass generation mechanism. The models allow computation of the spectrum in the presence of large anomalous dimensions due to walking and strong NJL interactions. Technicolour and QCD dynamics are described by the bottom-up Dynamic AdS/QCD model for arbitrary gauge groups and numbers of quark flavours. An assumption about the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark bilinear operator is input and the model then predicts the spectrum and decay constants for the mesons. We add NJL interactions responsible for flavour physics from extended tecnhicolour, top-colour etc using Witten's multi-trace prescription. We show the key behaviours of a top condensation model can be reproduced. We study generation of the top mass in (walking) one doublet and one family technicolour models and with strong ETC interactions. The models clearly reveal the tensions between the large top mass and precision data for delta rho. The neccessary tunings needed to generate a model compatible with precision constraints are simply demonstrated., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

The Nambu Jona-Lasinio model of chiral symmetry breaking predicts a second order chiral phase transition. If the fermions in addition have non-abelian gauge interactions then the transition is expected to become a crossover as the NJL term enhances the IR chiral symmetry breaking of the gauge theory. We study this behaviour in the holographic Dynamic AdS/QCD description of a non-abelian gauge theory with the NJL interaction included using Witten's multi-trace prescription. We study the behaviour of the mesonic spectrum as a function of the NJL coupling and the ratio of the UV cut off scale to the dynamical scale of the gauge theory., Comment: 5 pages, 9 figures, added figure

We explore the effect of magnetic field on chiral condensation in QCD via a simple bottom up holographic model which inputs QCD dynamics through the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark bilinear. Bottom up holography is a form of effective field theory and we use it to explore the dependence on the coefficients of the two lowest order terms linking the magnetic field and the quark condensate. In the massless theory, we identify a region of parameter space where magnetic catalysis occurs at zero temperature but inverse magnetic catalysis at temperatures of order the thermal phase transition. The model shows similar non-monotonic behaviour in the condensate with B at intermediate T as the lattice data. This behaviour is due to the separation of the meson melting and chiral transitions in the holographic framework. The introduction of quark mass raises the scale of B where inverse catalysis takes over from catalysis until the inverse catalysis lies outside the regime of validity of the effective description leaving just catalysis., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

NJL interactions are introduced into the D3/ probe D7 system using Witten's double trace operator prescription which includes the operator as a classical term in the effective potential. In the supersymmetric system they do not induce chiral symmetry breaking which we attribute to the flat effective potential with quark mass in the supersymmetric theory. If additional supersymmetry breaking is introduced then standard NJL behaviour is realized. In examples where chiral symmetry breaking is not preferred such as with a B field plus an IR cut off chiral condensation is triggered by the NJL interaction at a second order transition after a finite critical coupling. If the model already contains chiral symmetry breaking, for example in the B field case with no IR cut off, then the NJL interaction enhances the quark mass at all values of the NJL coupling. We also consider the system at finite temperature: the temperature discourages condensation but when combined with a magnetic field we find regions of parameter space where the NJL interaction triggers a first order chiral transition above a critical coupling., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Dynamic AdS/QCD is a modification of AdS/QCD that includes the running of the anomalous dimension of the q-bar q quark bilinear and in which the generation of the constituent quark mass plays the role of an IR wall. The model allows one to move away smoothly from the controlled spectrum of the N=2 super Yang-Mills theory of the D3/probe-D7 system to more QCD-like theories with chiral symmetry breaking. We investigate soft wall behaviour in the model that gives Regge trajectories with M_{n,s}^2 ~ n,s. To achieve these behaviours requires the quark's constituent mass to fall peculiarly sharply in the IR so that meson physics is sensitive to RG scales well below the quark's on-shell mass. Including soft wall behaviour in models of walking gauge dynamics breaks the near conformal symmetry which is present above the quark on-shell mass which can generate a large mass for the techni-dilaton like state. We conclude that the meson spectrum is rather sensitive to the IR decoupling., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We argue, at a very basic effective field theory level, that higher dimension operators in scalar theories that break symmetries at scales close to their ultraviolet completion cutoff, include terms that favour the breaking of translation (Lorentz) invariance, potentially resulting in striped, chequered board or general crystal-like phases. Such descriptions can be thought of as the effective low energy description of QCD-like gauge theories near their strong coupling scale where terms involving higher dimension operators are generated. Our low energy theory consists of scalar fields describing operators such as $\bar{q} q$ and $\bar{q} F^{(2n)} q$. Such scalars can have kinetic mixing terms that generate effective momentum dependent contributions to the mass matrix. We show that these can destabilize the translationally invariant vacuum. It is possible that in some real gauge theory such operators could become sufficiently dominant to realize such phases and it would be interesting to look for them in lattice simulations. We present a holographic model of the same phenomena which includes RG running. A key phenomenological motive to look at such states is recent work that shows that the non-linear response in $R^2$ gravity to such short range fluctuations can mimic a cosmological constant. Intriguingly in a cosmology with such a Starobinsky inflation term, to generate the observed value of the present day acceleration would require stripes at the electroweak scale. Unfortunately, low energy phenomenological constraints on Lorentz violation in the electron-photon system appear to strongly rule out any such possibility outside of a disconnected dark sector., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure; minor changes. Using holography, we study the low-lying mesonic spectrum of a range of asymptotically free gauge theories. First we revisit a simple top-down holographic model of QCD-like dynamics with predictions in the M_rho-M_pi plane. The meson masses in this model are in very good agreement with lattice gauge theory calculations in the quenched approximation. We show that the key ingredient for the meson mass predictions is the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark condensate, gamma. This provides an explanation for the agreement of holographic and quenched lattice gauge theory calculations. We then study the `Dynamic AdS/QCD model' in which the gauge theory dynamics is included by a choice for the running of gamma. We use the naive two-loop perturbative running of the gauge coupling extrapolated to the non-perturbative regime to estimate the running of gamma across a number of theories. We consider models with quarks in the fundamental, adjoint, two-index symmetric and two-index anti-symmetric representations. We display predictions for M_rho, M_pi, M_sigma and the lightest glueball mass. Many of these theories, where the contribution to the running of gamma is dominated by the gluons, give very similar spectra, which also match with lattice expectations for QCD. On the other hand, a significant difference between spectra in different holographic models is seen for theories where the quark content changes the gradient of the running of gamma around the scale at which chiral symmetry breaking is triggered at gamma approximately 1. For these walking theories we see an enhancement of the rho-mass and a suppression of the sigma-mass.
