6. Symplectic topology of some Stein and rational surfaces

Abstract

A symplectic manifold is a 2n-dimensional smooth manifold endowed with a closed, non-degenerate 2-form. This picks out the set of Lagrangian submanifolds, n-dimensional submanifolds on which the 2-form vanishes, and the group of symplectomorphisms, diffeomorphisms which preserve the symplectic form. In this thesis I study the homotopy type of the (compactly-supported) symplectomorphism group and the connectivity of the space of Lagrangian spheres for an array of symplectic 4-manifolds comprising some Stein surfaces and some Del Prezzo surfaces. In part I of the thesis, concerning Stein surfaces, I calculate the homotopy type of the compactly-supported symplectomorphism group for C* x C with its split symplectic form and T*RP2 with its canonical symplectic form. More significantly, I show that the compactly-supported symplectomorphism group of the 4-dimensional An-Milnor fibre {x2 + y2 + zn+1 = 1} is homotopy equivalent to a discrete group which injects naturally into the braid group on n + 1-strands. In part II of the thesis, concerning Del Pezzo surfaces: I show that the isotopy class of a Lagrangian sphere in the monotone 2-, 3- or 4-point blow-up of CP2 is determined by its homology class; I calculate the homotopy type of the symplectomorphism group for the monotone 3-, 4- and 5-point blow-ups of CP2. The calculations of homotopy groups of symplectomorphism groups rely on nothing more than the standard technology of pseudoholomorphic curves and some involved topological arguments to prove the fibration property of various maps between infinite-dimensional spaces. The new idea is the compactification of the Milnor fibres by a configuration of holomorphic spheres which puts the calculation in a context familiar from the world of Lalonde-Pinsonnault and Abreu. The classification of Lagrangian spheres is based on an argument of Richard Hind.

Abstract

DUT-8(Ni) belongs to the flexible pillared layer MOFs, which solvent free variant can exist in the open pore (op, rigid) form or in the closed pore (cp, flexible) form depending on the crystal size regime. In present work, we report on response of desolvated DUT-8(Ni) against elevated temperature. For both variants, heating leads to structural transition, involving interpenetration of the framework and resulting in a new crystalline contracted closed pore phase (DUT-8(Ni)_ccp). The new compound was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic techniques, such as IR, Raman spectroscopy, EXAFS and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). State of the framework before transition (op vs. cp) influences the transition temperature: the small particles of the op phase transform at significantly lower temperature in comparison to the macroparticles of the cp phase, transforming just before decomposition. Thermal effects of structural cp to ccp transitions were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), showing an overall exothermic effect of the process, necessarily involving bond breaking and reformation. The theoretical calculations reveal the energetics driving the observed temperature induced phase transition.

Abstract

These are the raw data of "Temperature Driven Transformation of the Flexible Metal-Organic Framework DUT-8(Ni)"   DUT-8(Ni) metal-organic framework belongs to the family of flexible pillared layer materials. The desolvated framework can be obtained in the open pore form (op) or in the closed pore form (cp), depending on the crystal size regime. In the present work, we report on the behaviour of desolvated DUT-8(Ni) at elevated temperatures. For both, op and cp variants, heating causes a structural transition, leading to an new, crystalline compound, containing two interpenetrated networks. The state of the framework before transition (op vs. cp) influences the transition temperature: the small particles of the op phase transform at significantly lower temperature in comparison to the macroparticles of the cp phase, transforming close to the decomposition temperature. Abstract

Summary: Opioid harm can vary by opioid type. This observational study examined the effect of opioid type (oxycodone vs. tapentadol) on rates of persistent postoperative opioid use ('persistence'). We linked hospital and community pharmacy data for surgical patients who were dispensed discharge opioids between 1 January 2016 and 30 September 2021. Patients were grouped by opioid experience ('opioid‐naive' having received no opioids in the 3 months before discharge) and formulation of discharge opioid (immediate release only or modified release ± immediate release). Mixed‐effects logistic regression models predicted persistence (continued use of any opioid at 90 days after discharge), controlling for key persistence risk factors. Of the 122,836 patients, 2.31% opioid‐naive and 27.24% opioid‐experienced patients met the criteria for persistence. For opioid‐naive patients receiving immediate release opioids, there was no significant effect of opioid type. Tapentadol modified release was associated with significantly lower odds of persistence compared with oxycodone modified release, OR (95%CI) 0.81 (0.69–0.94) for opioid‐naive patients and 0.81 (0.71–0.93) for opioid‐experienced patients. Among patients who underwent orthopaedic surgery (n = 19,832), regardless of opioid experience or opioid formulation, the odds of persistence were significantly lower for those who received tapentadol compared with oxycodone. This was one of the largest and most extensive studies of persistent postoperative opioid use, and the first that specifically examined persistence with tapentadol. There appeared to be lower odds of persistence for tapentadol compared with oxycodone among key subgroups, including patients prescribed modified release opioids and those undergoing orthopaedic surgery.
