Abstract The geosphere and the microbial biosphere have co-evolved for ~3.8 Ga, with many lines of evidence suggesting a hydrothermal habitat for life’s origin. However, the extent that contemporary thermophiles and their hydrothermal habitats reflect those that likely existed on early Earth remains unknown. To address this knowledge gap, 64 geochemical analytes were measured and 1022 metagenome-assembled-genomes (MAGs) were generated from 34 chemosynthetic high-temperature springs in Yellowstone National Park and analysed alongside 444 MAGs from 35 published metagenomes. We used these data to evaluate co-variation in MAG taxonomy, metabolism, and phylogeny as a function of hot spring geochemistry. We found that cohorts of MAGs and their functions are discretely distributed across pH gradients that reflect different geochemical provinces. Acidic or circumneutral/alkaline springs harbor MAGs that branched later and are enriched in sulfur- and arsenic-based O2-dependent metabolic pathways that are inconsistent with early Earth conditions. In contrast, moderately acidic springs sourced by volcanic gas harbor earlier-branching MAGs that are enriched in anaerobic, gas-dependent metabolisms (e.g. H2, CO2, CH4 metabolism) that have been hypothesized to support early microbial life. Our results provide insight into the influence of redox state in the eco-evolutionary feedbacks between thermophiles and their habitats and suggest moderately acidic springs as early Earth analogs.

Radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) are radioactive gases emanating from geological materials. Inhalation of these gases is closely related to an increase in the probability of lung cancer if the levels are high. The majority of studies focus on radon, and the thoron is normally ignored because of its short half-life (55.6 s). However, thoron decay products can also cause a significant increase in dose. In buildings with high radon levels, the main mechanism for entry of radon is pressure-driven flow of soil gas through cracks in the floor. Both radon and thoron can also be released from building materials to the indoor atmosphere. In this work, we study the radon and thoron exhalation and emanation properties of an extended variety of common building materials manufactured in the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) but exported and used in all countries of the world. Radon and thoron emission from samples collected in the closed chamber was measured by an active method that uses a continuous radon/thoron monitor. The correlations between exhalation rates of these gases and their parent nuclide exhalation (radium/thorium) concentrations were examined. Finally, indoor radon and thoron and the annual effective dose were calculated from radon/thoron concentrations in the closed chamber. Zircon is the material with the highest concentration values of 226Ra and 232Th and the exhalation and emanation rates. Also in the case of zircon and some granites, the annual effective dose was higher than the annual exposure limit for the general public of 1 mSv y−1, recommended by the European regulations.

Thoron isotope has been growing in importance in the last years because, despite of its short half-life, can also contribute in the development of lung cancer. In this work, we assess the thoron massic exhalation rate and emanation factor of some building materials commonly used in the Iberian Peninsula. A continuous thoron monitor was used to measure the thoron activity growth as a function of time. To calculate the emanation factor, the activity of thoron radionuclide mother element (Th-232) by gamma spectrometry was employed. The exhalation rate values range from 0.0007 to 0.040 Bq•kg−1•s−1 for gypsum and Gris Quintana granite, respectively and the emanation factor range from 0.2 to 4.8% for Gran Beige and Gris Quintana granites, respectively. Ranges of results of all these parameters are in good agreement with the values reported by other authors for building materials of different countries.
