Contains fulltext : 296646.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), This thesis examines the intertextual presence of the work of Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges in the literary works of the Dutch authors Doeschka Meijsing, Frans Kellendonk and Willem Jan Otten. The intertextual relations with Borges’ work in a selection of their literary texts were studied systematically in order to map their functions and gain insight in the way they were related to the authors’ poetics. As a result of the intertextual analyses, we found that Borges’ work lives on in the work of the three authors. The common ground in their reception of Borges’ work was their reflection on the subjective nature of our perception of reality. Doeschka Meijsing referred to the way Borges described Realism and Nominalism, as defended by Plato and Aristotle, as two fundamentally different perspectives on reality and related them to novelistic and allegorical writing. Frans Kellendonk discussed the potential solipsist nature of discursive constructs, referring to the way the arbitrary relation between sign and meaning is reflected upon in Borges’ story “The Library of Babel”. Willem Jan Otten’s references to Berkeley’s Idealism in his early poetry were related to the way in which Borges made literary use of Berkeley’s thesis esse est percipi; in his later work, Otten represented Borges as an author with an extraordinary fascination for the human tradition of storytelling. Although each author explored scepticism towards our perception of reality, none of them constrained themselves to relativism. Instead, they searched for ways to relate to reality despite of their scepticism. The archaeological evidence will be at the heart of the analysis with attention for other types of sources where appropriate. By means of the application of current theories concerned with the concepts of memory and identity, it attempts to analyse and interpret the transformational processes at work in the physical city of Rome. This research therefore questions the interplay between the Roman cityscape and the concepts of memory and identity. These concepts are at the same time vested in and derived from this cityscape and seem to have been a defining factor in the transformational processes taking place in the physical surroundings of the late antique Romans. In the 20th century context of demographic and health transitions, there has been a growth in the aged population and an increase in older migrants. A holistic approach considers the heterogeneity of older populations, as well as the health and mortality differences among ageing internal migrants. A life course perspective using sequence analysis (SA) and combined modelling approaches sheds more light into the role that internal migration trajectories and other major life course events play in return migration and mortality later in life. Thus, the main aim was to examine the interplay between internal migration trajectories, return decisions, and mortality later in life in 19th−20th centuries Netherlands. This dissertation comprises of an introductory chapter, three empirical papers, a submitted manuscript, and a general discussion using data from the Historical Sample of the Netherlands. Chapter 2 shows the importance of using a life course approach in ageing and migration research by studying the effect of migration experiences on old-age mortality across 1850−1890 Dutch birth cohorts during the epidemiological transition. Chapter 3 examines how long-term migration trajectories, other relevant life course factors and birth cohort impacted the risk of return migration later in life in the period 1900–1994. Chapter 4 further investigates the socio-demographic determinants of long-term migration trajectories and their higher-order interactions with life course factors for the period 1850−1972. Chapter 5 provides insights on how lifelong migration trajectories affected mortality inequalities in old age in 20th-century Netherlands. At these schools, monks and priests trained the bedrock of a Catholic male elite. The pupils, Catholic boys aged 12 to 18, were prepared according to a tried and tested combination of humanities education at grammar school level, daily religious exercises, and a carefully curated recreational programme for a future in which they would rise to influential social positions as well-educated Catholic men of stature, either as priests or laymen. Using a wide range of sources, the complex inner world of the three institutes is brought to life from the perspective of different groups of stakeholders – priests, pupils and their parents, educators, and psychologists. The research study reveals that the priests did not simply base their elite education on clerical and Catholic formation ideals, but also constantly attuned these ideals to social developments and the wishes and needs of Catholics. This raises the issue of whether such an effect merely captures the underlying early-life conditions that impact growth, or whether some independent effect of stature can be discerned. Further, the effects of height on later-life outcomes need not be linear. These effects may also differ by gender, by context (time and place), and among life course domains such as occupational success, family formation or health in later life. The ten research articles in this issue use a plethora of historical sources on individuals, such as prison and hospital records, conscript records, genealogies and health surveys. These articles employ a variety of methods to distinguish between early-life and later-life effects, between intra- and intergenerational processes and between biological and socio-economic factors. Importantly, all articles discuss the impact of the specific context on their results to understand these effects. The overall conclusion is that independent later-life outcomes of height are rather ambiguous, and seem to stem more from the perception of physical strength, health and intelligence associated with height than from height itself. This special issue also reflects on intergenerational effects of the later-life outcomes of height. As populations have grown taller, it is possible that height and later-life outcomes have formed a ‘virtuous cycle’, resulting in taller, healthier and wealthier populations. Contains fulltext : 292300.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), This research study focuses on the way in which Byzantine migrants dealt with cultural trauma during the decline of the Byzantine Empire in the fifteenth century. It focuses in particular on a discourse analysis of contemporary, intellectual figures from the network of migrants who settled in Italian cities such as Venice and Rome. The study examines two particular cases: Cardinal Bessarion and Georgius Trapezuntius. Which discursive expression did these important figures in Renaissance Italy assign to their cultural trauma and its processing, and to what extent was this responsible for both the rhetoric and efforts that helped to shape the political climate and the perceptions in the Latin West with respect to the Greek East that had been conquered by the Ottoman Turks? It appears from this study that both Bessarion and Trapezuntius used their broad access to the various intellectual, philosophical and theological traditions (both Latin and Greek) to formulate their coping strategies for the cultural trauma that they shared. The point of departure is a multimedia installation by William Kentridge called Black Box (2005), in which he thematizes the Herero and Namaqua genocide during German colonial rule between 1904 and 1908. This research wants to respond to Kentridge’s demand for grief work, and relies on Walter Benjamin’s (1968) vision of history writing and Rosemarie Buikema’s (2020) concept of revolts to seek out theoretical and conceptual possibilities that allow it to posit simultaneously the singularity of the Holocaust, to articulate its deep connections with colonial crimes, and to demand a working through of Germany’s genocidal history.
