Examining the victim's perspective and studying the factors that lead to an increase in perceived discrimination investigate the discrimination against Turkish Muslims in Berlin, Bangladeshi Muslims in London and Moroccan Muslims in Madrid. Previous research has shown how living conditions within individual countries, such as access to material and emotional resources, are important for personal well-being, but it has been less successful in explaining differences between countries. This article investigates whether it matters in which political and economic circumstances people live, as well as whether their particular perception of the quality of their societal environment plays a role. People are well aware that the institutional and cultural settings in which their lives are embedded create opportunities and limitations: within individual countries, perceptions of society influence life satisfaction outcomes irrespective of access to resources. However, their importance for well-being differs across Europe: perceptions of societies are highly decisive in countries that provide only a minimum of social security and in which the reliability of political institutions is poor. In rich and stable countries, the impact is weaker and private social support becomes more important. In addition to these country-specific weights of life satisfaction determinants, life satisfaction variations between countries can be explained to a large extent by taking into consideration the economic performance, the social security level, and the political culture in a country--all in all, general conditions that enable people to live a respectable life. The question of acceptance of migrants among the general public in the receiving societies with special reference to the radical and anti-immigrant sentiments that support repatriation policies for legally established immigrants is examined. Results showed that support for repatriation policies is overall higher in Western European societies and lower educated individuals were generally more in favor of repatriation of migrants.

In this article the role the size of the immigrant population plays in understanding immigrant derogation within and between European regions is examined. Findings suggested that perceived group thereat increases subsequent immigrant derogation and intergroup contact reduces perceived group threat.

This article examines the construction industry in three European Union member countries to explore the interplay between trans and supranational politics and national industrial relations.

A study with data taken from the European Social Survey embarks on group threat theory by focusing on the actual and the perceived size of a minority under different political circumstances is presented. It is concluded that size does not matter for anti-immigrant attitudes in Europe or under different economic or political contexts.

This article examines Europeans' preference to reside in neighborhoods without ethnic minorities. The analysis is based on data from 20 countries obtained from the 2003 European Social Survey (Jowell and the Central Coordinating Team 2003). The data show that in most countries very few Europeans report living in areas with some or with many ethnic minorities, and that in most countries a substantial number of respondents consider their ideal neighborhood one that does not have residents who are ethnic minorities. Multilevel regression analysis reveals that preference for place of residence as a response to its ethnic composition is significantly affected by both individual-level and country-level characteristics. At the individual level, preference for ethnically homogeneous residence tends to be more pronounced among socioeconomically weak and vulnerable populations, conservative populations, and individuals who reside in communities without ethnic minorities. The country-level analysis demonstrates that preference to live in neighborhoods without ethnic minorities tends to increase with the relative size of the non-European ethnic population and to decrease with economic prosperity. Further analysis reveals that in Europe, preference for residing in ethnically homogeneous neighborhoods is influenced by three major social psychological factors: social distance, perceptions of the negative impact of foreigners, and preference for cultural homogeneity. The findings are discussed and evaluated in light of the general literature on structural sources of threat, prejudice, and choice of community, and are compared to findings revealed by research in the United States. Some of the key themes underpinning the growing interest in the second generation in Europe are discussed to decipher the meaning of the term 'integration' in contemporary debates about immigration and settlement.

Conflicting prognoses for European identity are addressed using data from residents of Edinburgh, Scotland, on the everyday significance of being European; a theoretically informed focus on people in one city. A representative sample of established residents aged 18--24 years are compared with a sample of resident peers engaged in Europe-oriented work or study. Survey data provide an overview of their different understandings of Europe and patterns of identification with Europe, Britain, Scotland and Edinburgh. Using qualitative interviews, rationales for self-engagement with or disengagement from Europe are further interrogated and located in orientations to place of residence, nationality and citizenship.These data provide some further insight into the process by which some come to present themselves as passionate utopian Europeans, while for many being European remains emotionally insignificant and devoid of imagined community or steps towards global citizenship.
