The chiton (Polyplacophora) occupies a significant position in molluscan evolutionary history as one of the most primitive groups within the phylum Mollusca. Acanthochitona defilippii (Tapparone-Canefri 1874) (Chitonida: Acanthochitonidae) is a commonly found intertidal chiton species in South Korea. In this study, we characterized the complete mitochondrial genome of A. defilippii (14,999 bp long), comprising 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and an A + T rich region (166 bp). The base composition is as follows: 31.82% for A, 11.63% for C, 16.69% for G, and 39.86% for T. We reconstructed a maximum likelihood (ML) tree to elucidate phylogenetic relationships among the eight chitonid families using the nucleotide sequences of all PCGs. The ML tree revealed that A. defilippii clustered with Acanthochitona avicula (BP 100) within the family Acanthochitonidae. Acanthochitonidae formed a sister group with Mopaliidae. The results could provide a valuable understanding the phylogenetic relationships of chitonid species.

The worm snail Thylacodes adamsii (Mörch, 1859) (Littorinimorpha: Vermetidae) is a sessile gastropod that mainly inhabits rocky shores along the warm temperate to tropical ocean. Herein, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of T. adamsii from South Korea was characterized. The genome is 14,913 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes. The genome organization and base composition of T. adamsii are similar to those of other vermetids. A phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using maximum likelihood based on the nucleotide sequences of the 13 PCGs; this tree supported the monophyly of Vermetidae. The complete mitogenome of T. adamsii can assist with molecular species identification and vermetid phylogenetic research in the future.

The ground beetle Synuchus nitidus (Motschulsky, 1861) (Carabidae: Harpalinae: Sphodrini) is one of the most common species in the forests of South Korea, which has the potential to be utilized as an environmental indicator. Here, we characterized the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of S. nitidus, which is the first in the harpaline tribe Sphodrini. Its genome is 16,392 bp in length and composed of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and an A + T rich region. In addition, we reconstructed a maximum likelihood tree to elucidate the phylogenetic position of Sphodrini among the seven harpaline tribes using nucleotide sequences of the 13 PCGs. The ML tree supported a monophyletic clade of the subfamily Harpalinae and showed a close relationship between Sphodrini and Lebinii with a low bootstrap value. The complete mitogenome of S. nitidus could be helpful for molecular species identification and exploring phylogenetic relationships among carabids.

Abstract Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection in young children and the second leading cause of infant death worldwide. While global circulation has been extensively studied for respiratory viruses such as seasonal influenza, and more recently also in great detail for SARS-CoV-2, a lack of global multi-annual sampling of complete RSV genomes limits our understanding of RSV molecular epidemiology. Here, we capitalise on the genomic surveillance by the INFORM-RSV study and apply phylodynamic approaches to uncover how selection and neutral epidemiological processes shape RSV diversity. Using complete viral genome sequences, we show similar patterns of site-specific diversifying selection among RSVA and RSVB and recover the imprint of non-neutral epidemic processes on their genealogies. Using a phylogeographic approach, we provide evidence for air travel governing the global patterns of RSVA and RSVB spread, which results in a considerable degree of phylogenetic mixing across countries. Our findings highlight the potential of systematic global RSV genomic surveillance for transforming our understanding of global RSV spread.

BackgroundAcinetobacter baumannii (AB) has emerged as one of the most challenging pathogens worldwide, causing invasive infections in the critically ill patients due to their ability to rapidly acquire resistance to antibiotics. This study aimed to analyze antibiotic resistance genes harbored in AB and non-baumannii Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-baumannii (NB-ACB) complex causing invasive diseases in Korean children. MethodsACB complexes isolated from sterile body fluid of children in three referral hospitals were prospectively collected. Colistin susceptibility was additionally tested via broth microdilution. Whole genome sequencing was performed and antibiotic resistance genes were analyzed.ResultsDuring January 2015 to December 2020, a total of 67 ACB complexes were isolated from sterile body fluid of children in three referral hospitals. The median age of the patients was 0.6 (interquartile range, 0.1–7.2) years old. Among all the isolates, 73.1% (n=49) were confirmed as AB and others as NB-ACB complex by whole genome sequencing. Among the AB isolates, only 22.4% susceptible to carbapenem. In particular, all clonal complex (CC) 92 AB (n=33) showed multi-drug resistance, whereas 31.3% in non-CC92 AB (n=16) (P

Abstract The reluctance of parents to vaccinate their children against COVID-19 was prevalent particularly when uncertainty over vaccination outcomes prevailed. We conducted a nationwide randomized online survey experiment to assess the effect of information provision on parental intention for COVID-19 vaccination before the government started vaccination for children in South Korea. Parents of elementary school children were provided with either no information (Control), information on vaccine profile (vaccine informed group; VI), or COVID-19 (disease informed group; DI). Among 359,110 participants, parental intention for vaccination of children was significantly higher in both VI and DI groups compared with the Control group. In terms of effect size, information on COVID-19 vaccine increased likelihood to vaccinate by 1620 per 100,000 parents and reduced vaccine hesitancy by 1340 per 100,000 parents. Consistently with the positive effect on vaccination intention, both VI and DI interventions increased participants’ perceptions on vaccination benefits being higher than its risks and vaccination risks being lower than health risks of COVID-19 infection, and self-reported trust in COVID-19 information. Our results lend strong support to the claim that the provision of targeted, tailored information on COVID-19 vaccine and infection increases parental intention to vaccinate children and reduces vaccine hesitancy.

Abstract Background Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) has emerged as one of the most problematic pathogens affecting critically ill patients. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal epidemiology of AB causing invasive diseases in children. Methods Acinetobacter spp. cultured from sterile body fluids and identified as Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-baumannii (ACB) complexes by automated systems from children aged below 19 years old were prospectively collected during 2001–2020. The discriminative partial sequence of rpoB gene was sequenced to identify the species, and sequence types (STs) were determined. Temporal changes in antimicrobial susceptibilities and STs were analyzed. Results In total, 108 non-duplicate ACB isolates were obtained from patients with invasive infections. The median age was 1.4 (interquartile range, 0.1–7.9) years, and 60.2% (n = 65) were male. Acinetobacter baumannii comprised 55.6% (n = 60) of the isolates, and the 30-day mortality was higher in patients with isolated AB than in those with non-baumannii Acinetobacter spp. (46.7% vs. 8.3%, P

IntroductionSea slater, in the genus Ligia, is widespread in rocky shore habitats, and the taxon is easily isolated due to its limited dispersal capacity. Therefore, most Ligia species exhibit an allopatric distribution, but Ligia exotica and L. cinerascens exhibit an overlapping distribution distribution in East Asia. Previous studies on both species have confirmed the existence of highly divergent lineages based on 16S rRNA.MethodsIn the present study, 282 Ligia individuals were collected at ten, three, and three sites in South Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, respectively, and 41 haplotypes were observed based on 16S rRNA.Results and discussionThe results of phylogeny, phylogenetic network, and TCS network, Principal Coordinates Analysis, and four Molecular Species Delimitation Analyses revealed that six genetic lineages including L. cinerascens, Lineages N and S of L. exotica, Ligia sp. 1, sp.2 and sp.3 were present. The three genetic lineages, including L. cinerascens, Lineage N of L. exotica, and Lineage S of L. exotica, were also identified in the phylogeny based on a nuclear gene of the sodium–potassium ATPase α-subunit (Nak). Phylogeographic analysis revealed that L. cinerascens and Lineage N of L. exotica were distributed overlappingly in South Korea, Japan, and the northern region of China. Generally, the two lineages of L. exotica were distributed allopatrically, which was more evident along the coastline of mainland China than that of Japan. The results of time-calibrated phylogeny suggested that the speciation events of Ligia species might be associated with Japanese mainland formation from Oligocene to Miocene (approximately 30-5 million years ago, Mya). The results of the present study provide insights that could facilitate the understanding of the evolutionary history of Ligia, tracking of geological processes, and evolutionary effects of palaeogeographical events at the population level.

The mitochondrial genome of a golden orb-web spider Trichonephila clavata (L. Koch, 1878) from South Korea is determined and characterized in detail, which is the second mitochondrial genome reported from this species: the first was published from the Chinese sample by Pan et al. (). It was 14,436 bp in length being composed of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and one control region (CR). It has a base composition of 35.99% for ‘A,’ 14.88% for ‘G,’ 9.09% for ‘C,’ and 40.04% for ‘T.’ Comparing the South Korean and Chinese mitochondrial genomes, we observed 8% nucleotide sequence differences between their CRs, caused by the different numbers and sorts of possessed tandem repeats, suggesting a promising molecular marker to distinguish South Korean individuals from Chinese ones. The phylogenetic trees using the maximum likelihood (ML) method were reconstructed with nucleotides (without 3rd codon position) and amino acids from 13 PCGs, respectively, which consistently confirmed that T. clavata (Subfamily Nephilinae) from South Korea and China are clustered together, distinctly separated from the other subfamily Araneinae in the monophyletic family Araneidae.

Abstract The blotched nerite Nerita albicilla (Linnaeus 1758) is distributed in intertidal areas of the Indo-Pacific. In South Korea, it has been found only in the southernmost region of Jeju Island so far. Owing to its limited distribution, it can be a promising intertidal species helpful for monitoring global climate change effects in the Korean Peninsula. We performed population genetic analyses based on 393 COI haplotypes from 697 N. albicilla, including 167 from this study and 530 from public databases. The results showed that there are two distinct genetic lineages in N. albicilla: PAIO (Palearctic, Australasia, Indo-Malay, and Oceania) and Afrotropic lineages. DNA barcoding gap analyses indicated that the two lineages could be differentiated into two different species: N. albicilla (PAIO) and N. originalis sp. nov. (Afrotropic) (3.96%). Additionally, it was revealed that their divergence time was ca. 5.96 Ma and dramatic diversification of COI haplotypes occurred during the late Pliocene and Pleistocene. The results of MDA, BSP, and neutrality test implied recent population size expansion, which was estimated to be ca. 250 Ka. Finally, we discussed whether the observation of N. originalis sp. nov. in South Korea is due to the northward migration through ocean currents caused by global warming or due to artificial activity through marine transportation.

Grasshoppers (Acridoidea, Orthoptera) are the dominant herbivores in grassland ecosystems worldwide. They can increase rangeland productivity by stimulating plant growth and accelerating nutrient cycling. This article presents a comprehensive checklist of grasshoppers in Mongolia. Until then, the available information was very scattered, based on old studies of Mongolian grasshoppers, recorded in a few international catalogues and databases, individual records and research work on agroecosystem communities. However, the available information on the composition of the Orthopteran fauna in Mongolia was sometimes unclear or non-existent and these dubious data were excluded from the present study. In addition, the grasshopper distribution analysis used the standardised personal collection of D. Altanchimeg. We also present a list of grasshoppers, as well as their distribution and abundance, in countries adjacent to Mongolia, such as Russia, China and South Korea. The surveys covered six types of natural zones: high mountain, taiga, forest-steppe, steppe, desert steppe and desert; desert steppe and steppe zones are the most widely distributed. We hope to have contributed significantly to the study of the distribution of grasshopper species in all these natural zones.In this study, a total of three families of Acridoidea belonging to eight subfamilies, 17 tribes, 52 genera and 128 species are reported for the various natural zones. The recorded species belong to eight subfamilies: Gomphocerinae are the most numerous with 56 species recorded, followed by Oedipodinae (51 species), Thrinchinae (nine species), Melanoplinae (six species), Calliptaminae (three species), Dericorythinae, Acridinae, Egnatiinae (one species each).

Summary: Background: The Invasive Respiratory Infection Surveillance (IRIS) Consortium was established to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on invasive diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Streptococcus agalactiae. We aimed to analyse the incidence and distribution of these diseases during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the 2 years preceding the pandemic. Methods: For this prospective analysis, laboratories in 30 countries and territories representing five continents submitted surveillance data from Jan 1, 2018, to Jan 2, 2022, to private projects within databases in PubMLST. The impact of COVID-19 containment measures on the overall number of cases was analysed, and changes in disease distributions by patient age and serotype or group were examined. Interrupted time-series analyses were done to quantify the impact of pandemic response measures and their relaxation on disease rates, and autoregressive integrated moving average models were used to estimate effect sizes and forecast counterfactual trends by hemisphere. Findings: Overall, 116 841 cases were analysed: 76 481 in 2018–19, before the pandemic, and 40 360 in 2020–21, during the pandemic. During the pandemic there was a significant reduction in the risk of disease caused by S pneumoniae (risk ratio 0·47; 95% CI 0·40–0·55), H influenzae (0·51; 0·40–0·66) and N meningitidis (0·26; 0·21–0·31), while no significant changes were observed for S agalactiae (1·02; 0·75–1·40), which is not transmitted via the respiratory route. No major changes in the distribution of cases were observed when stratified by patient age or serotype or group. An estimated 36 289 (95% prediction interval 17 145–55 434) cases of invasive bacterial disease were averted during the first 2 years of the pandemic among IRIS-participating countries and territories. Interpretation: COVID-19 containment measures were associated with a sustained decrease in the incidence of invasive disease caused by S pneumoniae, H influenzae, and N meningitidis during the first 2 years of the pandemic, but cases began to increase in some countries towards the end of 2021 as pandemic restrictions were lifted. These IRIS data provide a better understanding of microbial transmission, will inform vaccine development and implementation, and can contribute to health-care service planning and provision of policies. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern have been emerging. However, knowledge of temporal and spatial dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 is limited. This study characterized SARS-CoV-2 evolution in immunosuppressed patients with long-term SARS-CoV-2 shedding for 73–250 days, without specific treatment. We conducted whole-genome sequencing of 27 serial samples, including 26 serial samples collected from various anatomic sites of two patients and the first positive sample from patient 2‘s mother. We analysed the intrahost temporal dynamics and genomic diversity of the viral population within different sample types. Intrahost variants emerging during infection showed diversity between individual hosts. Remarkably, N501Y, P681R, and E484K, key substitutions within spike protein, emerged in vivo during infection and became the dominant population. P681R, which had not yet been detected in the publicly available genome in Korea, appeared within patient 1 during infection. Mutually exclusive substitutions at residues R346 (R346S and R346I) and E484 (E484K and E484A) of spike protein and continuous turnover of these substitutions occurred. Unique genetic changes were observed in urine samples. A household transmission from patient 2 to his mother, at least 38 days after the diagnosis, was characterized. Viruses may differently mutate and adjust to the host selective pressure, which could enable the virus to replicate efficiently for fitness in each host. Intrahost variants could be candidate variants likely to spread to the population eventually. Our findings may provide new insights into the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in response to interactions between the virus and host.

Background: Expansion of the single sequence type 3 (ST3) was associated with a high macrolide resistance rate among Mycoplasma pneumoniae in Korea during the 2014–2016 epidemic. This study investigates the macrolide resistance rate and genetic diversity of the subsequent epidemic of M. pneumoniae pneumonia in 2019–2020. Methods: The culture for M. pneumoniae was developed from 1228 respiratory samples collected from children with pneumonia in four hospitals in Korea between January 2019 and January 2020. Determination of macrolide resistance and multilocus sequence typing analysis were performed on M. pneumoniae isolates. eBURST analysis was applied to estimate the relationships among strains and to assign strains to a clonal complex. Results: M. pneumoniae was cultured in 93 (7.6%) of 1228 clinical samples. The overall macrolide resistance rate of M. pneumoniae strains was 78.5% (73/93). Of the nine STs identified, three were novel. The most common ST was ST3 (66 [71.0%]) followed by ST14 (18 [19.4%]) and ST7/ST15 (2 [2.2%] each). Three STs (ST3, ST14, and ST17) exhibited macrolide resistance. The macrolide resistance rates of ST3 and ST14 were 98.5% (65 of 66) and 38.9% (7 of 18), respectively. Conclusion: Compared to the previous outbreak in 2014–2016, the overall macrolide resistance remained high; however, an increasing proportion of macrolide resistance was observed within ST14 strains in 2019–2020.

Objectives: Changes in the epidemiology of group A streptococcus (GAS) infection is related to emm genotype. We studied the distribution of emm genotypes and their antibiotic susceptibility among Korean children. Methods: Isolates from children with GAS infection between 2012 and 2019 were collected. emm typing and cluster analysis was performed according to the Centers for Disease Control emm cluster classification. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the E-test and resistance genes were analyzed for macrolide resistant phenotypes. Results: Among 169 GAS isolates, 115 were from children with scarlet fever. Among invasive isolates, emm1 (6/22, 27.3%), emm12 (4/22, 18.2%), and emm4 (4/22, 18.2%) were most common. In scarlet fever, although emm4 (38/115, 33.0%) was the most prevalent throughout the study period, emm4 was replaced by emm3 (28/90, 31.1%) during an outbreak in 2017–2018. Among all isolates, only 2 (1.2%) exhibited erythromycin resistance and harbored both ermA and ermB genes. Conclusions: In this analysis of GAS isolated from Korean children, emm1 was the most prevalent in invasive infection. In scarlet fever, emm4 was prevalent throughout the study period, with an increase in emm3 during 2017–2018. GAS isolates during 2012–2019 demonstrated low erythromycin resistance.

A white-spotted flower chafer Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis widely distributed in Asian countries is traditionally used in oriental medicine. This study explored gene expression abundance with respect to wing development and metamorphosis in P. b. seulensis based on the large-scale RNA-seq data. The transcriptome assembly consists of 23,551 high-quality transcripts which are approximately 96.7% covered. We found 265 wing development genes, 19 metamorphosis genes, and 1,314 candidates. Of the 1,598 genes, 1,594 are included exclusively in cluster 4 with similar gene co-expression patterns. The network centrality analyses showed that wing development- and metamorphosis-related genes have a high degree of betweenness centrality and are expressed most highly in eggs, moderately in pupa and adults, and lowest in larva. This study provides some meaningful clues for elucidating the genetic modulation mechanism of wing development and metamorphosis in P. b. seulensis.

In April 2020, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety licensed a hexavalent combined diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis (DTaP), inactivated poliovirus (IPV), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugated to tetanus protein, and hepatitis B (HepB) (recombinant DNA) vaccine, DTa-PIPV-Hib-HepB (Hexaxim, Sanofi Pasteur), for use as a 3-dose primary series in infants aged 2, 4, and 6 months. The DTaP-IPV-Hib-HepB vaccine is highly immunogenic and safe and provides a long-term immune response based on studies performed in a variety of settings in many countries, including Korea. This report summarizes the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the Korean Pediatric Society guidelines for the use of this newly introduced hexavalent combination vaccine.

ABSTRACT: Background: Nasopharyngeal (NP) colonization with Streptococcus pneumoniae and non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is common in children, and may evolve as the source of invasive infections. In Korea, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) were introduced >10 years ago, enabling the authors to study the effect of the vaccine in preventing carriage. Methods: NP swabs were taken and a household survey was conducted at daycare centres located in different regions of Korea in 2014 and 2019. Pneumococcal serotypes were identified using the Quellung method and sequencing. NTHi were identified based on pilA and bexA genes. Results: In total, 1460 NP swabs were obtained with pneumococcal carriage rates of 36.4–42.1% and NTHi carriage rates of 36.5–26.7%. Among children carrying pneumococci, a significant increase was seen in serotype 23A between 2014 and 2019 (from 12.6% to 22.0%; P=0.005). Children who had received PCV were at lower risk of vaccine-type carriage (2.9% vs 0.8%; P=0.005). Conclusions: Between 2014 and 2019, the proportion of children carrying serotype 23A increased significantly, while the carriage rate of NTHi decreased. Continuous surveillance is needed to assess the long-term effects of the PCVs on carriage dynamics of pneumococcus and NTHi.

OBJECTIVES Vaccination is one of the most important strategies to contain the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Vaccination in children is dependent on their parents, making it important to understand parents’ awareness and attitudes toward vaccines in order to devise strategies to raise vaccination rates in children. METHODS A web-based nationwide survey was conducted among Korean parents of 7-year-old to 18-year-old children in August 2021 to estimate parents’ intention to vaccinate their children against COVID-19 and identify key factors affecting parental acceptance and hesitancy through regression analysis. RESULTS Approximately 56.4% (575/1,019) were willing to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. Contributing factors to COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy were being a mother (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.36; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.25 to 0.52), a lower education level (aOR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.70 to 0.97), hesitancy to other childhood vaccines (aOR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.64 to 0.96), and refusal to vaccinate themselves (aOR, 0.08; 95% CI, 0.02 to 0.20). Having older children (aOR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.28), trusting the child’s doctor (aOR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.32), positive perceptions of the COVID-19 vaccine’s effectiveness (aOR, 2.60; 95% CI, 1.90 to 3.57) and perceiving the COVID-19 vaccine as low-risk (aOR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.27 to 2.24) were associated with COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Concerns about adverse reactions were the most common cause of hesitancy. CONCLUSIONS Providing parents with accurate and reliable information on vaccine effectiveness and safety is important to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake in children. Differential or targeted approaches to parents according to gender, age, and their children’s age are necessary for effective communication about vaccination in children.

We present the complete mitochondrial genome of a Malaria vector Mosquito Anopheles sinensis Wiedemann, 1828 from South Korea. The mitochondrial genome is about 15,421 bp long and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and an A-T rich region. The present data were compared with those from China with respect to PCG sequence differences, tRNA structure, gene order, and control region (CR) structure. An. sinensis mitochondrial genomes from northeast Asia share identical gene composition and gene order. In contrast, they have distinct differences in the CR within the range 8.75% (51/583 bp) to 9.95% (58/583 bp). The phylogenetic analysis showed that An. sinensis from South Korea was clustered together with those from China, but there existed distinct genetic distance between the two. Likewise, mitochondrial genome sequences from other Anopheles species were employed to infer phylogenetic relationships among the members of the genus Anopheles. This study further promotes the enrichment of An. sinensis mitochondrial genome data, providing useful information for their mitochondrial genetic differences along with geographical distances in northeast Asia.

Abstract Background Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common pathogen that causes community-acquired pneumonia in school-age children. Macrolides are considered a first-line treatment for M. pneumoniae infection in children, but macrolide-refractory M. pneumoniae (MRMP) strains have become more common. In this study, we assessed the efficacy of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones in MRMP treatment in children through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods Two reviewers individually searched 10 electronic databases (Medline/Pubmed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and core Korean, Chinese, and Japanese journals) for papers published from January 1, 1990 to March 8, 2018. The following data for each treatment group were extracted from the selected studies: intervention (tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones/comparator), patient characteristics (age and sex), and outcomes (fever duration, hospital stay length, treatment success rate, and defervescence rates 24, 48, and 72 h after starting treatment). Abstract The chiton Liolophura japonica (Lischke 1873) is distributed in intertidal areas of the northwestern Pacific. Using COI and 16S rRNA, we found three genetic lineages, suggesting separation into three different species. Population genetic analyses, the two distinct COI barcoding gaps albeit one barcoding gap in the 16S rRNA, and phylogenetic relationships with a congeneric species supported this finding. We described L. koreana, sp. nov. over ca. 33°24′ N (JJ), and L. sinensis, sp. nov. around ca. 27°02′–28°00′ N (ZJ). We confirmed that these can be morphologically distinguished by lateral and dorsal black spots on the tegmentum and the shape of spicules on the perinotum. We also discuss species divergence during the Plio-Pleistocene, demographic expansions following the last interglacial age in the Pleistocene, and augmentation of COI haplotype diversity during the Pleistocene. Our study sheds light on the potential for COI in examining marine invertebrate species discrimination and distribution in the northwestern Pacific.

Humanity has been suffering from the global severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic that began late in 2019. In 2020, for the first time in history, new vaccine platforms—including mRNA vaccines and viral vector-based DNA vaccines—have been given emergency use authorization, leading to mass vaccinations. The purpose of this article is to review the currently most widely used coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines, investigate their immunogenicity and efficacy data, and analyze the vaccine safety profiles that have been published, to date.

Abstract The land snail Ellobium chinense (L. Pfeiffer, 1855) (Eupulmonata, Ellobiida, Ellobiidae), which inhabits the salt marshes along the coastal areas of northwestern Pacific, is an endangered species on the IUCN Red List. Over recent decades, the population size of E. chinense has consistently decreased due to environmental interference caused by natural disasters and human activities. Here, we provide the first assessment of the genetic diversity and population genetic structures of northwestern Pacific E. chinense. The results analyzed with COI and microsatellites revealed that E. chinense population exhibit metapopulation characteristics, retaining under the influence of the Kuroshio warm currents through expansion of the Late-Middle and Late Pleistocene. We also found four phylogenetic groups, regardless of geographical distributions, which were easily distinguishable by four unidirectional and stepwise adenine-to-guanine transitions in COI (sites 207–282–354–420: A–A–A–A, A–A–G–A, G–A–G–A, and G–G–G–G). Additionally, the four COI hotspots were robustly connected with a high degree of covariance between them. We discuss the role of these covariate guanines which link to form four consecutive G-quadruplexes, and their possible beneficial effects under positive selection pressure.

A concerning development during the coronavirus disease pandemic has been multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. Reports of this condition in East Asia have been limited. In South Korea, 3 cases were reported to the national surveillance system for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. All case-patients were hospitalized and survived with no major disease sequelae.

The mitochondrial genome of the Endangered freshwater snail Koreoleptoxis nodifila (Caenogastropoda: Semisulcospiridae) from South Korea is determined and characterized in detail. It is 15,737 bp in length being composed of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and one control region. It has a base composition of 31.23% for A, 16.29% for G, 17.84% for C, and 34.64% for T. The phylogenetic trees reconstructed based on the maximum-likelihood (ML) method and Bayesian inference (BI) confirmed that K. nodifila belongs to the Semisulcospiridae clade in the monophyletic caeonogastropod superfamily Cerithioidea.

Abstract Background Because of the absence of a specific diagnostic test and pathognomonic clinical features, physicians must rely on the presence of specific clinical criteria and laboratory data that support the diagnosis of KD. To help clinicians distinguish KD, KDSS, septic shock, and TSS earlier, we suggest differential diagnosis and treatment guideline. Methods Medical records of immunocompetent patients who were admitted to the pediatric department with a diagnosis of KDSS, septic shock or TSS (SS group) were retrospectively reviewed. In addition, KD patients were selected by seasonal matching to each case of KDSS patient by date of admission (± 2 weeks). Results There were 13 patients with KDSS, 35 patients with SS group, and 91 patients with KD. In comparison between KDSS and septic shock group, KDSS group had significantly higher rate of coronary aneurysm incidence, and higher left ventricle dysfunction rate. In comparison between KDSS and TSS, patients with KDSS had a significantly higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and significantly lower creatinine. Receiver operation characteristic curve revealed that the optimal ESR cut off value for determining the KDSS was 56.0 (sensitivity 75.0%, specificity of 100.0%) and the optimal creatinine cut off value for determining the TSS was 0.695 (sensitivity 76.9%, specificity 84.6%). Conclusions Clinical symptoms, laboratory finding, echocardiography, and culture studies can be used to differentiate KD, KDSS, septic shock and TSS.

Objectives: In Korea, the National Immunization Program provided trivalent inactivated influenza vaccines (IIV3) to all children aged 6–59 months during the 2017–2018 season. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of IIV3 in children during the 2017–2018 season. Methods: Children aged 6–59 months who were tested for influenza for their acute respiratory illness in four hospitals during the 2017–2018 influenza season were included. We estimated the VE of IIV3 by test-negative case-control design based on the rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT) or reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test results. Results: A total of 4738 children were included in this study. The number of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases was 845 (17.8%), and there were 478 cases of influenza A and 362 cases of influenza B. The adjusted VE based on RT-PCR was 53.4% (95% CI, 25.3–70.5) against any influenza, 68.8% (95% CI, 38.7–84.1) against influenza A, and 29.7% (95% CI, −35.1 to 61.8) for influenza B. The adjusted VE based on RIDT was 14.8% (95% CI, −4.4 to 30.0) against any influenza, 24.2% (95% CI, 3.1–40.2) against influenza A, and −5.1% (95% CI, −42.6 to 21.4) against influenza B. Age-specific VE based on RT-PCR against any influenza was 44.1% (95% CI, −0.2 to 67.8) in children aged 6 months to 2 years and 59.3% (95% CI, 8.8–81.9) in children aged 3–

Background/Aims As the novel coronavirus (coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]) outbreak progresses rapidly, staying home is recommended for suspected patients; however, the safety of this recommendation is uncertain. In Korea, non-hospital facilities called “living and treatment centers (LTCs)” have been established since 5 March 2020. The LTCs provided a unique opportunity to evaluate the safety of selection criteria for low-risk groups. Methods Between 5 March and 9 April 2020, patients with COVID-19 who met the following criteria were admitted to the LTC; alert, age below 65 years old, no underlying disease or well-controlled underlying disease, body temperature below 38.0°C, whether taking antipyretics or not, and no dyspnea. Patients were closely observed by doctors or nurses’ interviews twice a day and transferred to hospitals when symptoms worsened. Results A total of 113 patients were admitted to the LTC; 52.2% were female, with a median age of 25 years (interquartile range, 21.5 to 39.5). Of 113 patients, 54 (47.8%) were asymptomatic at diagnosis, and 15 (13.3%) had no symptoms until they were released from isolation. During the follow-up period, two (1.8%) patients were transferred to a hospital but did not progress to severe status during hospitalization. Conclusions The risk of progression was negligible in COVID-19 patients who met the admission criteria for LTC at the time of diagnosis. LTCs could be a safe alternative considering shortage of hospital beds.

Abstract Background Surgical site infection (SSI) is the most common healthcare-associated infection. We report an outbreak of neurosurgical site infections caused by Serratia marcescens after craniotomy in a tertiary care hospital. Methods Between August 6 and 21, 2018, five cases of early-onset SSI caused by S. marcescens after craniotomy were recorded in a 1786-bed tertiary care hospital. Cultures were collected from potential environmental sources and healthcare workers. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used to investigate the genetic relationships among S. marcescens isolates. Results The outbreak involved five patients; S. marcescens was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid, pus, tissue, and blood samples from these patients. S. marcescens was also isolated from shaving razors and brushes. All S. marcescens isolates from the infected patients and razors showed the same resistance patterns on antibiotic-susceptibility tests. WGS revealed close clustering among four of five isolates from the patients and among three of four isolates from the razors. No additional patient developed S. marcescens infection after we stopped using the razors for scalp shaving. Conclusions We report an outbreak of neurosurgical site infections after craniotomy, which was associated with shaving razors contaminated by S. marcescens. Shaving scalps with razors should be avoided to prevent SSI.

ABSTRACTAs another wave of COVID-19 outbreak has approached in July 2020, a larger scale COVID-19 pediatric Asian cohort summarizing the clinical observations is warranted. Children confirmed with COVID-19 infection from the Republic of Korea, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Wuhan, China, during their first waves of local outbreaks were included. Their clinical characteristics and the temporal sequences of the first waves of local paediatric outbreaks were compared. Four hundred and twenty three children with COVID-19 were analyzed. Abstract Background Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory tract infections in children and adults. This study applied high-throughput whole genome sequencing (WGS) technologies to analyze the genomes of 30 M. pneumoniae strains isolated from children with pneumonia in South Korea during the two epidemics from 2010 to 2016 in comparison with a global collection of 48 M. pneumoniae strains which includes seven countries ranging from 1944 to 2017. Results The 30 Korean strains had approximately 40% GC content and ranged from 815,686 to 818,669 base pairs, coding for a total of 809 to 828 genes. Overall, BRIG revealed 99% to > 99% similarity among strains. The genomic similarity dropped to approximately 95% in the P1 type 2 strains when aligned to the reference M129 genome, which corresponded to the region of the p1 gene. MAUVE detected four subtype-specific insertions (three in P1 type 1 and one in P1 type 2), of which were all hypothetical proteins except one tRNA insertion in all P1 type 1 strains. The phylogenetic associations of 30 strains were generally consistent with the multilocus sequence typing results. The phylogenetic tree constructed with 78 genomes including 30 genomes from Korea formed two clusters and further divided into two sub-clusters. eBURST analysis revealed two clonal complexes according to P1 typing results showing higher diversity among P1 type 2 strains. Conclusions The comparative whole genome approach was able to define high genetic identity, unique structural diversity, and phylogenetic associations among the 78 M. pneumoniae strains isolated worldwide.

Omicron, a recent variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is currently globally dominating. We reviewed the etiology and epidemiology of croup over an approximately 5-year period, with an emphasis on the recent dominance of the Omicron variant. Children less than 5 years of age seen in the emergency department with diagnosis of croup from two large national tertiary hospitals were collected for the period from January 2018 through March 2022. Viral etiologies of the patients were compared with national surveillance data upon circulating respiratory viruses in the community. A total number of 879 croup cases were recognized during the study period. The most common pathogen was SARS-CoV-2 (26.9%), followed by HRV (23.8%), PIV1 (14.6%), PIV3 (13.1%), and CoV NL63 (13.1%), among seventeen respiratory viral pathogens tested by polymerase chain reaction. The viral identification rate was significantly higher in the Omicron period, with most of the pathogens identified as SARS-CoV-2. In the Omicron period, with the exponential increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the community, croup associated with SARS-CoV-2 significantly increased, with a high detection rate of 97.2% (35 of 36) among croup cases with pathogen identified. The etiologic and epidemiologic data before and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic indicate that the association between croup and infection with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant is highly plausible.

There are few data about Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) in children, particularly in developed countries. This study investigated the clinical characteristics and prognosis of the clinical PCP in non-HIV-infected Korean children. Children with positive results for the staining and/or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for P. jirovecii between 2001 and 2021 were identified. Patients were grouped into clinical PCP, which comprised proven and modified probable cases, and non-PCP groups. Modified probable PCP (mp-PCP) indicate the case which P. jirovecii was detected by conventional PCR rather than real-time PCR test. The differences in demographic and clinical characteristics were analyzed between the groups. A total of 110 pneumonia cases with positive results for P. jirovecii PCR and/or stain were identified from 107 children. Of these, 28.2% were classified as non-PCP, 12.7% of proven PCP, and 59.1% of mp-PCP. Compared with the non-PCP group, the mp-PCP group had a significantly higher rate of solid organ transplantation (3.2% vs. 24.6%), fever (58.1% vs. 76.9%), tachypnea (25.8% vs. 66.2%), dyspnea (48.4% vs. 83.1%), desaturation (48.4% vs. 80.0%), and bilateral ground-glass opacity on chest radiograph (19.4% vs. 73.8%). However, when the mp-PCP group was compared with the proven PCP group, there was no statistically significant difference. For children with clinical PCP, age under 5 years of age (odds ratio [OR] 10.7), hospital-onset (OR 6.9), and desaturation as initial symptom (OR 63.5) were significant risk factors for death in multivariable analysis. Modified probable PCP might reliably reflect true PCP in terms of patient’s demographic, clinical features, treatment response, and prognosis. Immunocompromised children with hospital-onset pneumonia who are younger than 5 years of age and have desaturation would be more cautiously and aggressively managed for survival through the screening for P. jirovecii by conventional PCR on appropriate lower respiratory specimens.

The complete mitochondrial genome of an endangered triton snail Charonia lampas (Littorinimorpha: Charoniidae) from South Korea was determined with the size of 15,330 bp, which contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs. The overall features of the mitochondrial genome are similar to those of typical gastropod mitochondrial genomes, except for the absence of a control region (CR): a conserved gene order, a high A + T content (67.45% for C. lampas), preference for AT-rich codons, etc. It is the second mitochondrial genome reported from this species after Cho et al. (2017), and there is ca. 98% sequence similarity between those of the species. According to the maximum-likelihood tree, C. lampas placed within the monophyletic Tonnoidea, forming a monoclade with Cypraeoidea and Stromboidea within Littorinimorpha. Interestingly, we confirmed that Vermetoidea is placed at the basal position of the monophyletic Littorinimorpha.

A giant water bug Lethocerus deyrollei (Hemiptera: Belostomatidae) is a large, predatory, and nocturnal hemipteran insect, which has been considered threatened and thus enrolled as an endangered species in South Korea and Japan. Here, we characterized the complete mitochondrial genome of L. deyrollei, which has a circular form with 19,295 bp in length, which is the longest when compared to those of the 111 hemipteran species reported so far. Its longest genome size is due to the extremely extended CR (4686 bp), which is much longer than those of China and Japan. It consisted of a total of 37 genes (13 PCGs, 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes) and one control region (CR). The genome composition and gene order were identical to those previously reported from the same species of China and Japan with over 99.7% sequence similarities except for CR and trnI. The nucleotide composition was highly A + T biased, accounting for 71% of the whole mitochondrial genome, as in other species of Nepoidea. Based on the aa sequences of 13 PCGs, we reconstructed a maximum likelihood tree, which indicated that the three mitochondrial genomes of L. deyrollei from South Korea, China, and Japan are grouped, and also Lethocerus, Belostomatidae, Nepoidea, Nepomorpha, Heteroptra are strong monophyletic groups, respectively.

The complete mitochondrial genome of a two-spotted cricket Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) from South Korea is determined and characterized in this study. The circular genome is 16,075 bp long, which consists of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and an A + T−rich region. It has a base composition of A (40.35%), G (9.09%), C (16.80%), and T (33.76%). The gene order is identical to the ancestral gene arrangement pattern generally shown in arthropods, with the exception of an inversion of trnN-trnS1-trnE into trnE-trnS1-trnN. The maximum likelihood (ML) tree supports that G. bimaculatus is a distinct member of the monophyletic family Gryllidae.

Along with positive SARS-CoV-2 RNA in nasopharyngeal swabs, viral RNA was detectable at high concentration for >3 weeks in fecal samples from 12 mildly symptomatic and asymptomatic children with COVID-19 in Seoul, South Korea. Saliva also tested positive during the early phase of infection. If proven infectious, feces and saliva could serve as transmission sources.

Summary: Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria meningitidis, which are typically transmitted via respiratory droplets, are leading causes of invasive diseases, including bacteraemic pneumonia and meningitis, and of secondary infections subsequent to post-viral respiratory disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of invasive disease due to these pathogens during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In this prospective analysis of surveillance data, laboratories in 26 countries and territories across six continents submitted data on cases of invasive disease due to S pneumoniae, H influenzae, and N meningitidis from Jan 1, 2018, to May, 31, 2020, as part of the Invasive Respiratory Infection Surveillance (IRIS) Initiative. Numbers of weekly cases in 2020 were compared with corresponding data for 2018 and 2019. Data for invasive disease due to Streptococcus agalactiae, a non-respiratory pathogen, were collected from nine laboratories for comparison. The stringency of COVID-19 containment measures was quantified using the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker. Changes in population movements were assessed using Google COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports. Interrupted time-series modelling quantified changes in the incidence of invasive disease due to S pneumoniae, H influenzae, and N meningitidis in 2020 relative to when containment measures were imposed. Findings: 27 laboratories from 26 countries and territories submitted data to the IRIS Initiative for S pneumoniae (62 837 total cases), 24 laboratories from 24 countries submitted data for H influenzae (7796 total cases), and 21 laboratories from 21 countries submitted data for N meningitidis (5877 total cases). All countries and territories had experienced a significant and sustained reduction in invasive diseases due to S pneumoniae, H influenzae, and N meningitidis in early 2020 (Jan 1 to May 31, 2020), coinciding with the introduction of COVID-19 containment measures in each country. By contrast, no significant changes in the incidence of invasive S agalactiae infections were observed. Similar trends were observed across most countries and territories despite differing stringency in COVID-19 control policies. The incidence of reported S pneumoniae infections decreased by 68% at 4 weeks (incidence rate ratio 0·32 [95% CI 0·27–0·37]) and 82% at 8 weeks (0·18 [0·14–0·23]) following the week in which significant changes in population movements were recorded. Interpretation: The introduction of COVID-19 containment policies and public information campaigns likely reduced transmission of S pneumoniae, H influenzae, and N meningitidis, leading to a significant reduction in life-threatening invasive diseases in many countries worldwide. The complete mitochondrial genome of Protaetia brevitarsis, an important Scarabaeidae insect that is distributed across most Asian countries, was characterized using long template PCR methods. It was 17,783 bp in length being composed of 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs) and a non-coding region. The phylogenetic tree reconstructed based on the maximum likelihood (ML) method confirmed that P. brevitarsis was placed within the clade of Scarabaeidae and Polyphaga species forming a complete monophyly.

The Committee on Infectious Diseases of the Korean Pediatric Society recommended immunization schedule for children and adolescents aged 18 years or younger in the 9th (2018) edition of Immunization guideline. This report provides the revised recommendations made by the committee and summarizes several changes from the 2015 guideline. National immunization program (NIP) launched a human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization for girls aged 12 years in 2016. NIP has also expanded age indication for inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) to 12 years of age in the 2018-2019 season. Quadrivalent IIVs with a full dose (0.5 mL) are approved for all children of 6 months or older. Recommendations of live attenuated influenza vaccine were removed. For inactivated Japanese encephalitis vaccine, first 2 doses are considered as the primary series. Recommendations for use of newly introduced vaccines (diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis/inactivated poliovirus/Haemophilus influenzae type b, 9-valent HPV, new varicella vaccine, new quadrivalent IIV, and attenuated oral typhoid vaccine) were added. Lastly, monitoring system for adverse events following immunization was updated. Other changes can be found in the 9th edition of Immunization guideline in detail.

Introduction: Varicella is a highly contagious infection that can lead to serious complications, particularly in high-risk groups; however, it is vaccine preventable. Disease awareness and understanding of the disease burden can strongly influence vaccine coverage. This review provides insight into the current epidemiology and the importance of varicella from both public health and economic perspectives across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Areas covered: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify studies on the incidence, seroprevalence, fatality rate and complication rate of varicella. Economic burden studies were also captured. Altogether, 125 studies were identified across the region; these were supplemented by government reports (gray data). Reported vaccine coverage varied from 2.8% to 97%; a key influencing factor was inclusion of the varicella vaccine in national immunization programs. In general, varicella incidence in the unvaccinated population was highest in children ≤5 years old and seroprevalence increased with age. Economic analyses highlighted the cost-saving potential of vaccination programs, especially from a societal perspective. Expert opinion: Varicella-related data varied greatly across the APAC region, highlighting the need to better understand the burden of varicella in this area, and particularly identified the need for better surveillance and reporting.

To investigate the genetic background for the emergence of macrolide resistance, we characterized the genetic features of Mycoplasma pneumoniae using multilocus sequence typing. Of the 146 M. pneumoniae strains collected during the 5 consecutive outbreaks of M. pneumoniae pneumonia during 2000–2016 in South Korea, macrolide resistance increased from 0% in the first outbreak to 84.4% in the fifth. Among the 8 sequence types (STs) identified, ST3 (74.7%) was the most prevalent, followed by ST14 (15.1%). Macrolide-susceptible strains comprised 8 different STs, and all macrolide-resistant strains were ST3 (98.3%) except 1 with ST14. The proportion of macrolide-resistant strains in ST3 remained 2.2% (1/46) until the 2006–2007 outbreak and then markedly increased to 82.6% (19/23) during the 2010–2012 outbreak and 95.0% (38/40) during the 2014–2016 outbreak. The findings demonstrated that clonal expansion of ST3 M. pneumoniae was associated with the increase in macrolide resistance in South Korea.

Abstract Background Understanding the population genetics of pneumococci will allow detection of changes in the prevalence of circulating genotypes and evidence for capsular switching. We aimed to analyze the genetic structure of invasive pneumococcal isolates obtained from children before and after the use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) in Korea. Methods A total of 285 invasive pneumococcal isolates were analyzed using serotyping, multilocus sequence typing, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We classified the isolation year to pre-PCV7 (1995–2003; n = 70), post-PCV7 (2004–2010; n = 142), and post-PCV13 (2011–2013; n = 73) periods. Results Of the 10 clonal complexes (CCs), antibiotic-resistant international clones, CC320 (31.6%), CC81 (14.7%), and CC166 (6.7%) were the main complexes. Serotype 19A was the main serotype of CC320 throughout the periods. Serotypes of CC81 mainly comprised of 23F (53.3%) in pre-PCV7 period and replaced by non-vaccine types (NVTs; 6C [10%], 13 [30%], 15A [40%], and 15B/C [20%]) in post-PCV13 period. The main serotype responsible for CC166 also changed from 9 V (80%) in pre-PCV7 to NVT 11A (50%) in post-PCV13 periods. Non-susceptibility to penicillin (42.3%) was the highest in CC320, increasing from 0 to 76%. Conclusion The genetic structures of invasive pneumococcal isolates in Korean children have changed concomitantly with serotype after the implementation of PCVs.

A hen harrier Circus cyaneus (Accipitriformes: Accipitridae), a migrant raptor having a wide breeding range from Europe to Northeast Asia, migrates to more southerly areas (Southern Europe, China, Korea and Japan) in winter. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of C. cyaneus was completely sequenced and characterized. It was 20,173 bp in length being composed of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes and two control regions. It has a base composition of A (32.2%), G (12.6%), C (30.5%) and T (24.7%). The phylogenetic tree reconstructed based on the maximum likelihood (ML) method confirms that C. cyaneus places within the clade of the family Accipitridae in the monophyletic avian order Accipitriformes.

Abstract Background With the emergence of macrolide resistance, concerns about the efficacy of macrolides for the treatment of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) pneumonia in children have been raised. This study aimed to determine the effect of macrolide resistance on the outcome of children who were hospitalized with MP pneumonia. Methods Between 2010 and 2015, we performed culture of MP from nasopharyngeal samples obtained from children who were hospitalized with pneumonia at five hospitals in Korea. Macrolide resistance was determined by the analysis of 23S rRNA gene transition and the minimal inhibitory concentrations of four macrolides. Medical records were reviewed to analyze the clinical response to treatment with macrolides. Results MP was detected in 116 (4.8%) of the 2436 children with pneumonia. MP pneumonia was prevalent in 2011 and 2015. Of the 116 patients with MP pneumonia, 82 (70.7%) were macrolide-resistant. There were no differences in the age distribution, total duration of fever, and chest x-ray patterns between the macrolide-susceptible and macrolide-resistant groups. After macrolide initiation, mean days to defervescence were longer in the macrolide-resistant group than in macrolide-susceptible group (5.7 days vs. 4.1 days, P = 0.021). Plumarella spinosa (Anthozoa: Octocorallia: Primnoidae) is an endangered marine soft coral species discovered on a 50–100 m deep reefs in South Korea. We analyzed the mitochondrial genome sequence of this species. The genome size was 19,037 bp in length consisting of 14 protein coding genes (PCGs), two rRNA genes and a tRNA gene. Our phylogenetic analysis for this species with 33 Octocorallia species reconstructed based on the nucleotide sequences of 14 PCGs showed that P. spinosa was placed as a sister to Narella hawainensis and Primnoidae formed a monophyletic group.
