We present the first lasing results of SwissFEL, a hard X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) that recently came into operation at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. SwissFEL is a very stable, compact and cost-effective X-ray FEL facility driven by a low-energy and ultra-low-emittance electron beam travelling through short-period undulators. It delivers stable hard X-ray FEL radiation at 1-A wavelength with pulse energies of more than 500 μJ, pulse durations of ~30 fs (root mean square) and spectral bandwidth below the per-mil level. Using special configurations, we have produced pulses shorter than 1 fs and, in a different set-up, broadband radiation with an unprecedented bandwidth of ~2%. The extremely small emittance demonstrated at SwissFEL paves the way for even more compact and affordable hard X-ray FELs, potentially boosting the number of facilities worldwide and thereby expanding the population of the scientific community that has access to X-ray FEL radiation. The first lasing results at SwissFEL, an X-ray free-electron laser, are presented, highlighting the facility’s unique capabilities. A general comparison to other major facilities is also provided.

The Accelerator on a Chip International Program (ACHIP) is an international collaboration, funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, with the goal of demonstrating that laser-driven accelerator can be integrated on a chip to fully build an accelerator based on dielectric structures. PSI will provide access to the high brightness electron beam of SwissFEL to test structures, approaches and methods towards achieving the final goal of the project. In this contribution, we will describe the two interaction chambers installed on SwissFEL to perform the proof-of-principle experiments. In particular, we will present the positioning system for the samples, the magnets needed to focus the beam to sub-micrometer dimensions and the diagnostics to measure beam properties at the interaction point.

Bacterial species able to produce proteins that are toxic against insects have been discovered at the beginning of the last century. However, up to date only two of them have been used as pesticides in mosquito control strategies targeting larval breeding sites: Bacillus thuringensis var. israelensis and Lysinibacillus sphaericus. Aiming to expand the arsenal of biopesticides, bacterial cultures from 44 soil samples were assayed for their ability to kill larvae of Aedes albopictus. A method to select, grow and test the larvicidal capability of spore-forming bacteria from each soil sample was developed. This allowed identifying 13 soil samples containing strains capable of killing Ae. albopictus larvae. Among the active isolates, one strain with high toxicity was identified as Brevibacillus laterosporus by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and by morphological characterization using transmission electron microscopy. The new isolate showed a larvicidal activity significantly higher than the B. laterosporus LMG 15441 reference strain. Its genome was phylogenomically characterized and compared to the available Brevibacillus genomes. Thus, the new isolate can be considered as a candidate adjuvant to biopesticides formulations that would help preventing the insurgence of resistance.

Optical-domain Transient Grating (TG) spectroscopy is a versatile background-free four-wave-mixing technique used to probe vibrational, magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in the time domain. The newly developed coherent X-ray Free Electron Laser sources allow its extension to the X-ray regime. Xrays offer multiple advantages for TG: their large penetration depth allows probing the bulk properties of materials, their element-specificity can address core-excited states, and their short wavelengths create excitation gratings with unprecedented momentum transfer and spatial resolution. We demonstrate for the first time TG excitation in the hard X-ray range at 7.1 keV. In Bismuth Germanate (BGO), the nonresonant TG excitation generates coherent optical phonons detected as a function of time by diffraction of an optical probe pulse. This experiment demonstrates the ability to probe bulk properties of materials and paves the way for ultrafast coherent four-wave-mixing techniques using X-ray probes and involving nanoscale TG spatial periods., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Physical review accelerators and beams 23(12), 120704 (1-8) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.23.120704, FERMI is a seeded FEL based on the High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) scheme and has been generating intense and fully coherent extreme ultra-violet and soft x-ray pulses for several years. The high-degree performance of the FEL leans on a high brightness electron beam, with small transverse emittance ( ∼1$μm$) and a peak current of about 700-800 A. The main constraint on lasing at high harmonics of the seed is low electron time-slice energy spread. The optimization of the photoinjector and of some linac parameters has allowed a reduction of the relative slice energy spread to the level of few times of 10$^{−5}$. With these new conditions, the FEL can be operated without the need of a laser heater to suppress micro bunching instabilities and this "cold’’ beam has allowed generation of extreme UV pulses with pulse energy exceeding a mJ, and with peak power of about 10 GW. This work describes a method for the generation of one and two-color ultra-short X-ray free-electron-laser pulses, based on tailoring the Coulomb interaction between the electrons of a highly compressed beam in the nonlinear regime.

The energy spread of the electron beam is a critical parameter in x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) and needs to be optimized for best performance. The uncorrelated energy spread of the electrons can be a few keV or less in XFEL injectors, thus very challenging to measure. The standard method to characterize the electron beam energy spread, consisting in streaking the beam with a transverse deflector and measuring the time-resolved beam size of the electrons in a dispersive location for a single electron beam energy, has a typical resolution of several keV. To overcome this limitation we introduce a novel method to measure the beam size at a dispersive location for different beam energies so that it is possible to disentangle the beam size contributions related to the energy spread, the intrinsic beam size and the monitor resolution. As a consequence, the energy spread can be characterized with a much higher precision and resolution than in the standard approach. We also suggest to perform measurements for different deflection amplitudes so that the energy spread induced by the transverse deflector can be subtracted properly. The scheme does not require any additional hardware and thus can be readily applied in any standard XFEL facility. Numerical simulations and experimental results at SwissFEL confirm the validity of our method. Our calculations show that the approach can be used to significantly overcome the resolution of the standard approach and measure energy spreads well below 1 keV. Results on fabrication and experimental characterization of wire scanners (WS) with submicrometer spatial resolution are presented. Independently fabricated at PSI and FERMI by means of nanolithography, the proposed WS solutions consist of 900 and 800 nm wide free-standing stripes ensuring a geometric resolution of about 250 nm. The nanofabricated WS were tested successfully at SwissFEL where low-charge electron beams with a vertical size of 400--500 nm were characterized. Further experimental tests at 200 pC confirmed the resilience to the heat-loading of the structures. With respect to conventional WS consisting of a metallic wire stretched onto a frame, the nanofabricated WS allow for an improvement of the spatial resolution from the micrometer to the submicrometer level as well as of beam invasiveness thanks to an equivalent reduction of the impact surface of the scanning stripe. The present work represents an important milestone toward the goal---that PSI and FERMI are pursuing---to realize a standard WS solution with minimal invasiveness and submicrometer resolution.

International audience; We exploit echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) to produce fully coherent free-electron laser (FEL) pulses at soft-x-ray wavelengths and shape their spectrotemporal content. In an EEHG FEL, the longitudinal phase space of the relativistic electron beam that amplifies light is precisely tailored using two external seed lasers and two magnetic chicanes. We show that the spectrotemporal properties of the emitted radiation can be controlled by tuning the bandwidth, linear frequency chirp, and intensity of one of the seed lasers. The experimental data are supported by analytical and numerical models. Our results open a pathway toward coherent control of quantum processes at short wavelengths in the fields of applied physics, chemistry and biology, where manipulating the radiation spectrum is essential. The ability to precisely control the spectrotemporal content of intense, short-wavelength FEL pulses and the low sensitivity of the radiation to electron-beam imperfections make the technique an ideal candidate for use in chirped-pulse amplification schemes.

We have produced hard x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) radiation with unprecedented large bandwidth tunable up to 2%. The experiments have been carried out at SwissFEL, the x-ray FEL facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. The bandwidth is enhanced by maximizing the energy chirp of the electron beam, which is accomplished by optimizing the compression setup. We demonstrate continuous tunability of the bandwidth with a simple method only requiring a quadrupole magnet. The generation of such broadband FEL pulses will improve the efficiency of many techniques such as x-ray crystallography and spectroscopy, opening the door to significant progress in photon science. It has already been demonstrated that the broadband pulses of SwissFEL are beneficial to enhance the performance of crystallography, and further SwissFEL users plan to exploit this large bandwidth radiation to improve the efficiency of their measurement techniques.

The transverse emittance of the electron beam is a fundamental parameter in linac-based x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs). We present results of emittance measurements carried out at SwissFEL, a compact x-ray FEL facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, including a description of the novel high-resolution measurement techniques and the optimization procedure. We obtained slice emittance values at the undulator entrance down to 200 nm for an electron beam with a charge of 200 pC and an rms duration of 30--40 fs. Furthermore, we achieved slice emittances as low as 100 nm for 10 pC beams with few fs duration. These values set new standards for electron linear accelerators. The quality, verification, and control of our electron beams allowed us to generate high-power FEL radiation for a wavelength as short as 0.1 nm using an electron beam with an energy of only 6 GeV. The emittance values demonstrated at SwissFEL would allow producing hard x-ray FEL pulses with even lower-energy beams, thus paving the way for even more compact and cost-effective FEL facilities.

Advanced acceleration technologies are receiving considerable interest in order to miniaturize future particle accelerators. One such technology is the dual-grating dielectric structures, which can support accelerating fields one to two orders of magnitude higher than the metal RF cavities in conventional accelerators. This opens up the possibility of enabling high accelerating gradients of up to several GV/m. This paper investigates numerically a quartz dual-grating structure which is driven by THz pulses to accelerate electrons. Geometry optimizations are carried out to achieve the trade-offs between accelerating gradient and vacuum channel gap. A realistic electron bunch available from the future Compact Linear Accelerator for Research and Applications (CLARA) is loaded into an optimized 100-period dual-grating structure for a detailed wakefield study. A THz pulse is then employed to interact with this CLARA bunch in the optimized structure. The computed beam quality is analyzed in terms of emittance, energy spread and loaded accelerating gradient. The simulations show that an accelerating gradient of 348 ± 12 MV/m with an emittance growth of 3.0% can be obtained.

We demonstrate the operation of a compact x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) using the optical klystron mechanism. This effect speeds up the FEL process using the dispersion of magnetic chicanes placed between the undulator modules of the FEL beamline. The demonstration was performed at the soft x-ray beamline of SwissFEL, called Athos, which is, as far as we are aware, the only x-ray FEL to date with magnetic chicanes between every two undulator modules. In our measurements, we show that, compared to standard operation without chicanes, the required undulator length to achieve FEL saturation is reduced between 15% and 30% for radiation wavelengths between 1 and 2 nm. Fully exploiting the optical klystron effect represents an important step toward more compact FEL designs, rendering this key technology more affordable and hence accessible to a larger science community.

International audience; We investigate the orthorhombic distortion and the structural dynamics of epitaxial MnAs layers on GaAs(001) using static and time-resolved x-ray diffraction. Laser-induced intensity oscillations of Bragg reflections allow us to identify the optical phonon associated with orthorhombic distortion and to follow its softening along the path towards an undistorted phase of hexagonal symmetry. The frequency of this mode falls in the THz range, in agreement with recent calculations. Incomplete softening suggests that the $\beta-\gamma$ transformation deviates from a purely second-order displacive transition.

This radiation is also characterized by a high degree of polarization that is generally linear anddepends on the undulator properties. The possibility of controlling the polarization state of the radiation isan important option for free electron lasers that is critical for a large class of experiments. Such control canbe achieved using variable polarization undulators or alternatively via the crossed polarized undulatorscheme. We report the results of an extensive study for the characterization of the crossed-polarizedundulator scheme in a number of different configurations. A simple model, based on Gaussian mode beampropagation, is presented and used to reproduce the experimental results obtained at the seeded freeelectron laser FERMI. A good agreement is found between the model and the experiment allowing us tounderstand the impact of the wavefront properties of the radiation coming from the consecutive undulatorson the output radiation. The use of dielectrics increases the breakdown field limit, and thus the achievable gradient, by a factor of at least 10 in comparison to metals. Experimental demonstrations of DLA in 2013 led to the Accelerator on a Chip International Program (ACHIP), funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. In ACHIP, our main goal is to build an accelerator on a silicon chip, which can accelerate electrons from below 100 keV to above 1 MeV with a gradient of at least 100 MeV/m. For stable acceleration on the chip, magnet-only focusing techniques are insufficient to compensate the strong acceleration defocusing. Thus, spatial harmonic and Alternating Phase Focusing (APF) laser-based focusing techniques have been developed. We have also developed the simplified symplectic tracking code DLAtrack6D, which makes use of the periodicity and applies only one kick per DLA cell, which is calculated by the Fourier coefficient of the synchronous spatial harmonic. Due to coupling, the Fourier coefficients of neighboring cells are not entirely independent and a field flatness optimization (similarly as in multi-cell cavities) needs to be performed. The simulation of the entire accelerator on a chip by a Particle In Cell (PIC) code is possible, but impractical for optimization purposes. X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs), which amplify light emitted by a relativistic electron beam, are extending nonlinear optical techniques to shorter wavelengths, adding element specificity by exciting and probing electronic transitions from core levels. These techniques would benefit tremendously from having a stable FEL source, generating spectrally pure and wavelength-tunable pulses. We show that such requirements can be met by operating the FEL in the so-called echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) configuration. Here, two external conventional lasers are used to precisely tailor the longitudinal phase space of the electron beam before emission of X-rays. We demonstrate high-gain EEHG lasing producing stable, intense, nearly fully coherent pulses at wavelengths as short as 5.9 nm (~211 eV) at the FERMI FEL user facility. Low sensitivity to electron-beam imperfections and observation of stable, narrow-band, coherent emission down to 2.6 nm (~474 eV) make the technique a prime candidate for generating laser-like pulses in the X-ray spectral region, opening the door to multidimensional coherent spectroscopies at short wavelengths. Echo-enabled harmonic generation in a free-electron laser enables 45th harmonic pulses from a 264 nm wavelength seed, yielding 5.9 nm wavelength coherent output.

The SwissFEL soft X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) beamline Athos will be ready for user operation in 2021. Its design includes a novel layout of alternating magnetic chicanes and short undulator segments. Together with the APPLE X architecture of undulators, the Athos branch can be operated in different modes producing FEL beams with unique characteristics ranging from attosecond pulse length to high-power modes. Further space has been reserved for upgrades including modulators and an external seeding laser for better timing control. All of these schemes rely on state-of-the-art technologies described in this overview. The optical transport line distributing the FEL beam to the experimental stations was designed with the whole range of beam parameters in mind. Currently two experimental stations, one for condensed matter and quantum materials research and a second one for atomic, molecular and optical physics, chemical sciences and ultrafast single-particle imaging, are being laid out such that they can profit from the unique soft X-ray pulses produced in the Athos branch in an optimal way., Journal of Synchrotron Radiation, 26 (4), ISSN:0909-0495, ISSN:1600-5775

The advent of FEL sources delivering two synchronized pulses of different wavelengths has made available a whole range of novel pump-probe experiments [1], allowing the exploration of the dynamics of matter driven to extreme non-equilibrium states by an intense ultrashort X-ray pulse and then probing the sample response at variable time delay with a second pulse [2].

We have installed an interaction chamber in the electron beam line of SwissFEL. Electrons with a particle energy of 3 GeV are focused to a few-micrometer beam size. Samples placed in this beam can be aligned to the electron beam with a hexapod. The goal of this installation is to demonstrate laser-driven acceleration inside dielectric structures. We present here the layout of this interaction chamber as well as first measurements with the electron beam.

Their exceptional photon flux enables multiple photon absorptions within a single femtosecond pulse, which in turn allows for deep insights into the photoionization process itself as well as into evolving ionic states of a target. Here we employ ultraintense pulses from the FEL FERMI to spectroscopically investigate the sequential emission of electrons from gaseous, atomic argon in the neutral as well as the ionic ground state. A pronounced forward-backward symmetry breaking of the angularly resolved emission patterns with respect to the light propagation direction is experimentally observed and theoretically explained for the region of the Cooper minimum, where the asymmetry of electron emission is strongly enhanced. The generation of low-emittance electron beams has received significant interest in recent years. Driven by the requirements of X-ray-free electron lasers, the emittance of photocathode injectors has been reduced significantly, with corresponding increase in beam brightness. This has put increasingly stringent requirements on the instrumentation to measure the beam size. These requirements are even more stringent for novel accelerator developments, such as laser-driven accelerators based on dielectric structures or on a plasma. We present here the generation and measurement of a sub-micrometer electron beam, at a particle energy of 330 MeV, and a bunch charge below 1 pC. An electron-beam optics with a vertical β-function of a few millimeters has been setup. We have investigated by time-resolved X-ray diffraction the manganese arsenide structure dynamics in MnAs/GaAs (001) epitaxial films, when the $\alpha \to \beta $ magnetostructural phase transition is triggered by an ultra-fast optical laser pulse. Understanding the photo-induced phase transition dynamics is relevant for applications of MnAs/GaAs (001) as a magnetically active template in laser-induced magnetization switching processes. The main goal of our experiment is to determine the timescales of the structural changes that are likely to play a role in laser-driven magnetization reversal.

It was shown recently that the Fe magnetization reversal in the Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001) epitaxial system, attained by temperature control of the regular stripe pattern of the MnAs ?- and ?-phases, can also be driven by an ultrashort optical laser pulse. In the present time-resolved scattering experiment, we address the dynamics of the MnAs ?/? self-organized stripe pattern induced by a 100 fs optical laser pulse, using as a probe the XUV radiation from the FERMI free-electron laser. We observe a loss in the diffraction intensity from the ordered ?/? stripes that occurs at two characteristic timescales in the range of ~10-12 and ~10-10 s. We associate the first intensity drop with ultrafast electron-lattice energy exchange processes within the laser-MnAs interaction volume and the second with thermal diffusion towards the MnAs/GaAs interface. With the support of model calculations, the observed dynamics are interpreted in terms of the formation of a laterally homogeneous MnAs overlayer, the thickness of which evolves in time, correlating the MnAs microstructure dynamics with the Fe magnetization response.

Spintronic devices are most often controlled by applied magnetic fields or by the injection of spin-polarized currents.

The potential of the two-color mode implemented at the FERMI free-electron laser (FEL) source for pumping and probing selectively different atomic species has been demonstrated by time-resolved scattering experiments with permalloy (FeNi alloy) and NiFe 2 O 4 samples. We monitored the ultra-fast demagnetization of Ni induced by the pump FEL pulse, by tuning the linearly-polarized FEL probe pulse to the Ni-3p resonance and measuring the scattered intensity in the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect geometry. The measurements were performed by varying the intensity of the FEL pump pulse, tuning its wavelength to and off of the Fe-3p resonance, and by spanning the FEL probe pulse delays across the 300–900 fs range. The obtained results have Photonics 2017, 4, 6 2 of 10 evidenced that for the case of NiFe 2 O 4 , there is a sensible difference in the magnetic response at the Ni site when the pump pulse causes electronic excitations at the Fe site.
