Abstract

The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is a community-driven standard for the organization of data and metadata from a growing range of neuroscience modalities. This paper is meant as a history of how the standard has developed and grown over time. We outline the principles behind the project, the mechanisms by which it has been extended, and some of the challenges being addressed as it evolves. We also discuss the lessons learned through the project, with the aim of enabling researchers in other domains to learn from the success of BIDS.

8. Towards a Deeper Understanding of Community College Part-Time Faculty: Perceptions of Roles and Expectations

Abstract

The employment of part-time faculty (PTF) continues to ensue debate among educators, policymakers, and state officials. Recent debate has focused on the impact of employment of PTF on student outcomes, but misses a critical element--the experiences of part-time faculty. This study explores community college PTF members' perceptions of their roles and expectations, along with their perceptions of the institutional environment. Offering insight into the lived experiences of part-time faculty--as they are critical to the ongoing practices of community colleges--this study informs discussion of faculty identity development. Drawing on PTF typology research, as well as theories of faculty role performance and achievement, faculty socialization, and faculty identity, this instrumental case study explored the experiences of 12 PTF at a North Carolina community college. Classroom observations and document analysis were used to triangulate primary data yielding four key findings: (1) PTF come to understand what it means to be a faculty member largely as a result of graduate school experiences, as well as interactions with community college faculty and department-heads; (2) PTF perceive themselves as educators as opposed to adjunct or PTF; (3) When discussed as adjunct faculty, PTF view their roles as less than those of full-time faculty; and (4) PTF list professional development, personal aspirations, and faculty/department-head interactions as factors that facilitate role performance, and note lack of pay/reward structures, lack of training and orientation, lack of resources, and lack of acknowledgment as factors which hinder role fulfillment. 9. The Relationship of Scaffolding on Cognitive Load in an Online Self-Regulated Learning Environment

Abstract

Scaffolding learners in self-regulated learning environments is a topic of increasing importance as implementation of online learning grows. Since cognitive overload in hypermedia environments can be a problem for some learners, instructional design strategies can be used to decrease extraneous load or encourage germane load in order to help learners effectively use their cognitive resources. A scaffolding strategy to support learning in potentially confusing environments is to provide high level information in advance of the learning tasks in the form of an instructional organizer. In 2007-2008, 244 participants completed an online self-directed brief health education course on sexual health randomly receiving one of three pictorial graphic organizer scaffolds, concept, procedural, or metacognitive, in advance of the start of the course. Participants rated the course's cognitive burden and their intentional efforts as very low. The low burdens suggest that the online course was easy to use and navigate and the tasks were minimally challenging. Consistent with prior research, these results confirm that organizers are useful to reduce extraneous cognitive load only when multimedia environments are confusing or disorganized, concepts and material are unfamiliar, and learning materials are challenging. Analysis of learning and reflection outcomes indicate that even in a low-burden course, use of a metacognitive organizer might be beneficial in supporting short and longer term reflection. Abstract

TPS4184 Background: While treatment of pancreatic cancer has advanced, survival rates remain low. Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT; high dose per fraction radiation) may exhibit improved clinical outcomes in locally advanced pancreatic cancer but carries potential gastrointestinal toxicity risks (Zhong 2017). Rucosopasem (GC4711) is one of a class of investigational selective dismutase mimetics that rapidly and specifically converts superoxide to hydrogen peroxide (Riley 2006). Studies have shown that normal cells tolerate hydrogen peroxide fluxes better than cancer cells (Doskey 2016). As radiation response modifiers, dismutase mimetics have the potential to increase tumor control of SBRT without compromising radiation safety (El-Mahdy 2020, Sishc 2021). In a pilot phase 1/2 trial in patients with pancreatic cancer, avasopasem, a dismutase mimetic related to rucosopasem, nearly doubled median overall survival in patients receiving SBRT vs placebo plus SBRT. Improvements versus placebo were also observed in local tumor control, time to metastases, and progression-free survival. Altogether, these data support the hypothesis that rucosopasem may improve survival and the benefit-risk ratio of SBRT by improving efficacy without increasing gastrointestinal toxicity. Materials/Methods: GRECO-2 is a phase 2, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (NCT04698915) to determine the effect of adding rucosopasem to SBRT on overall survival in patients with borderline resectable or locally advanced, unresectable nonmetastatic pancreatic cancer following initial chemotherapy with a FOLFIRINOX-based regimen or a gemcitabine doublet. Approximately 160 patients will be randomized (approximately 35 sites) to receive rucosopasem 100 mg or placebo via IV infusion over 15 minutes, prior to each SBRT fraction (5 x 10 Gy). Patients judged to be resectable will undergo surgical exploration within 8 weeks after SBRT. The primary endpoint is overall survival. Secondary endpoints include progression-free survival, locoregional control, time to metastasis, surgical resection rate, RO resection rate, best overall response, in-field local response, and safety (acute and late toxicities). Exploratory endpoints include PRO-CTCAE and CA19-9 normalization. This trial is now enrolling. Clinical trial information: NCT04698915.

Abstract

Background: There is a growing movement to increase palliative care consults from the emergency department (ED) to reduce healthcare costs and improve quality of life. The surprise question is a screening tool that emergency medicine physicians may be able to use towards achieving this goal.Objective: The objectives of this study were to increase awareness of hospice and palliative care medicine (HPM) among emergency medicine (EM) providers and to evaluate whether this heightened awareness increased palliative care consults among participating emergency medicine providers.Methods: We conducted an anonymous convenience sample survey and two educational interventions about HPM including the surprise question among emergency medicine resident and attending physicians at a large urban public academic quaternary care center from July to November 2018. A report of palliative care consults ordered between August 1, 2017 and January 1, 2019 was generated from the electronic health records used by the hospital. The number of palliative care consults made before and after the educational intervention was compared.Results: After the first educational intervention centered on the surprise question, palliative care consults from the ED increased from an average of 2.25 per month (range 0 to 8, SD: 2.38) to 12.67 per month (range 9 to 19, SD: 4.01, p < .001).Conclusion: Educating EM physicians about the surprise question can increase the number of palliative care consults from the ED, thereby potentially improving patient care and decreasing costs by avoiding unwanted healthcare interventions. Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) derived from recombinant E. coli was found to be able to catalyze the condensation between glycine and 4-pentenaldehyde, affording enantiopure l -erythro-2-amino-3-hydroxy-6-heptenoic acid (AHHA) in high yield and throughput. Conversion of this chiral intermediate of biosynthetic origin to the oral carbacephalosporin antibiotic loracarbef (Lorabid®) via β-lactam forming reactions and subsequent Dieckmann cyclization was achieved.

The U.S. Navy has maintained a continuous research, development and certification program in HSLA and ULCB steels with the intent of someday totally replacing the HY steels now used in ship construction. A major advantage in using HSLA and ULCB steels is their increase in weldability over the HY steels which now require large amounts of preheating to prevent crack formation in the heat affected zone. Up until the present day, however, low carbon HSLA and ULCB steels have not been used with a dedicated low carbon weld wire. In the present work an attempt was made to correlate the mechanical properties (tensile strength, yield strength and Charpy impact energy), chemical composition and microstructure of a series of autogenous multirun TIG welds on ULCB steels. It was found that good combinations of weld strength and toughness could be achieved with appropriate choice of weld metal chemistry and TIG welding power, but that there was a ceiling of about 2.0wt.% molybdenum which could be tolerated before weld metal embrittlement became evident.
