Polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDFs), and polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) are semi-volatile compounds and can be partitioned in the atmosphere between the gas and particulate phase, due to their physicochemical properties. For this reason, the reference standard methods for air sampling include a quartz fiber filter (QFF) for the particulate and a polyurethane foam (PUF) cartridge for the vapor phase, and it is the classical and most popular sampling method in the air. Despite the presence of the two adsorbing media, this method cannot be used for the study of the gas-particulate distribution, but only for a total quantification. This study presents the results and the performance aim to validate an activated carbon fiber (ACF) filter for the sampling of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs) using laboratory and field tests. The specificity, precision, and accuracy of the ACF in relation to the QFF + PUF were evaluated through the isotopic dilution technique, the recovery rates, and the standard deviations. Then the ACF performance was assessed on real samples, in a naturally contaminated area, through parallel sampling with the reference method (QFF + PUF). The QA/QC was defined according to the standard methods ISO 16000–13 and -14 and EPA TO4A and 9A. Data confirmed that ACF meets the requirements for the quantification of native POPs compounds in atmospheric and indoor samples. In addition, ACF provided accuracy and precision comparable to those offered by standard reference methods using QFF + PUF, but with significant savings in terms of time and costs.

The growing global energy demand requires the continuous development and optimization of the production of alternative energy sources. According to the circular economy approach, waste conversion into biogas and biomethane represent an interesting energy source. The input into the distribution network and energy conversion systems of biomethane requires quality monitoring and the use of cleaning up systems. Therefore, there is a need to constantly invest in the development of sampling and analysis systems that save time, costs, and materials. The purpose of this study was to use activated porous carbon fiber (APCF), an extremely versatile material for sampling and analysis by thermal desorption, to show the advantages it has over the adsorbents traditionally used for siloxane monitoring. Siloxanes are among the contaminating compounds that are mainly present in biogas and biomethane, and if not removed sufficiently, they endanger the quality and use of the gas. These are highly harmful compounds since during combustion, they produce quartz particles that are abrasive to the surfaces of the materials involved in the energy production process. In addition, siloxanes directly hinder the energy properties of biomethane during combustion, due to their radical scavenger properties. In this work, the efficiency of APCF tube was evaluated by comparing it with common multilayer tube thought sampling and analyzing siloxanes in lab scale and in real scale (biogas plant). Thermal desorption analysis coupled with GC-MS for the determination of siloxanes showed that the use of APCF allows to obtain better performance. This allows to deduce that APCF is an innovative material for the establishment of a better sampling and analysis method than the current ones, enabling better results to be achieved in the process of monitoring fuel quality in biomethane production and storage facilities.

The paper would like to show a direct injection into GC-MS/QqQ for the determination of secondary aromas in white wine samples fermented in two different ways. The procedure has been compared with more traditional methods used in this field, i.e., headspace analysis and liquid–liquid extraction. The application of such direct injection, for the first time in the literature, allows us to analyze Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the range 0.1–100 µg mL−1, with Limits of Detection (LODs) and Limits of Quantification (LOQs) between 0.01–0.05 µg mL−1 and 0.03–0.09 µg mL−1, respectively, intraday and interday below 5.6% and 8.5%, respectively, and recoveries above 92% at two different fortification levels. The procedure has been applied to real wine samples: it evidences how the fermentation in wood (cherry) barrel yields higher VOC levels than ones in wine fermented in steel tank, causing production of different secondary aromas and different relative flavors.

Due to the increasing tattoo practicing in Eastern countries and general concern on tattoo ink composition and safety, the green tattoo inks Green Concentrate by Eternal, for European and “for Asia Market Only” were analyzed, under the premise that only the former falls under a composition regulation. A separation of the additives from the pigment was carried out by successive extraction in solvents of different polarities, i.e., water, acetone and dichloromethane. The solid residues were analyzed by IR and Raman spectroscopies, the liquid fractions by GC/mass spectrometry. The relative pigment load and element traces were also estimated. We found that the European and the Asian inks are based on the same pigment, PG7, restricted in Europe, though at different loads. They have a similar content of harmful impurities, such as Ni, As, Cd and Sb and both contain siloxanes, including harmful D4. Furthermore, they have different physical-chemical properties, the European ink being more hydrophilic, the Asian more hydrophobic. Additionally, the Asian ink contains harmful additives for the solubilization of hydrophobic matrices and by-products of the phthalocyanine synthesis. Teratogenic phthalates are present as well as chlorinated teratogenic and carcinogenic compounds usually associated to the laser treatment for removal purposes, to a larger extent in the European ink. The composition of the inks does not seem to reflect regulatory restrictions, where issued.

The growing sensitivity toward sustainability is being demonstrated by an increase in sales of natural wines. Natural wines are obtained using exclusively native vines, indigenous yeasts, absence of additives, irregular temperature control during fermentation, and smaller quantities of sulfites even compared to organic wines. In this work, natural wines were obtained from Fiano grape, a historical cultivar of Irpinia (Campania, Italy). The main objective of this study was to compare the chemical and sensory characteristics of natural wines produced using different vessels (10 HL): Test A: stainless steel; Test B: earthenware amphora; Test C: mulberry wood barrel; and Test D: cherry wood barrel without the use of starter yeasts and chemical additives, including sulfites. Our results show a greater concentration of higher alcohols and esters in wines obtained in amphora and wooden barrels. The results of this work reveal that the type of container influences the composition of wine to an important extent. In addition, the Fiano wines obtained have a distinctive sensory profile also due to the ancestral winemaking process used, which did not involve the use of starter yeasts or technological and chemical adjuvants.

The quality of honey is assessed through the determination of some commodity parameters: a certain importance is to be attributed to the absence of contaminating residues, in particular of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). This paper deeply investigates the presence of 22 PAHs in 57 honey samples collected in Central Italy and identifies the possible source apportionment and fingerprint identification by DLLME-GC-MS analysis and a chemometric approach. Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis have allowed to identify the main PAHs responsible of the contamination, benzo[a]anthracene and phenanthrene, characteristics pollutants of areas constantly exposed. The entire database has been compared to similar ones present in literature, particularly data from Serbia and Belgrado samples. The PCA applied to overall the data confirms the combustion to be the main contamination source in Italian samples whereas highlights the importance of the role of naphthalene, added during beekeeping practices in the other data-set.

The adverse effects of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) on health and ecosystems, as well as on meteorology and climate change, are well known to the scientific community. It is therefore undeniable that a good understanding of the sources of PM is crucial for effective control of emissions and to protect public health. One of the major contributions to atmospheric PM is biomass burning, a practice used both in agriculture and home heating, which can be traced and identified by analyzing sugars emitted from the combustion of cellulose and hemicellulose that make up biomass. In this review comparing almost 200 selected articles, we highlight the most recent studies that broaden such category of tracers, covering research publications on residential wood combustions, open-fire or combustion chamber burnings and ambient PM in different regions of Asia, America and Europe. The purpose of the present work is to collect data in the literature that indicate a direct correspondence between biomass burning and saccharides emitted into the atmosphere with regard to distinguishing common sugars attributed to biomass burning from those that have co-causes of issue. In this paper, we provide a list of 24 compounds, including those most commonly recognized as biomass burning tracers (i.e., levoglucosan, mannosan and galactosan), from which it emerges that monosaccharide anhydrides, sugar alcohols and primary sugars have been widely reported as organic tracers for biomass combustion, although it has also been shown that emissions of these compounds depend not only on combustion characteristics and equipment but also on fuel type, combustion quality and weather conditions. Although it appears that it is currently not possible to define a single compound as a universal indicator of biomass combustion, this review provides a valuable tool for the collection of information in the literature and identifies analytes that can lead to the determination of patterns for the distribution between PM generated by biomass combustion.

Extractable denuders were designed to collect trace atmospheric semivolatile organic compounds with high volume (38.30 and 200 L/ min) samplers. Denuders were made of multichannel ceramic support coated with sodium silicate and functionalised with phenyl moieties. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans and chlorobenzenes in ambient air of a sub-urban area of Monterotondo, Italy, were sampled. Samplings were of 24 h, 48 h and 1 week period. Precision was determined using field triplicates and compared to the conventional high volume sampler methods. The fraction of analytes in the particle phase measured with the filter/ PUF system ranged from 0.2 % for naphthalene to 98.5 % for benzo(ghi)perylene; this fraction measured with the denuder ranged from 0.5 % for naphthalene to 99.0 % for benzo(ghi)perylene. A paired t-test indicated that these values were significantly (t = 3.58, P0.01) higher for the denuder. Results showed good repeatability (0.4-4.6 %), sampling efficiency (99 %) and good capacity as variations in experimental efficiency were not observed also for longer (1 week) period sampling. As significant changes in efficiency were observed (0.7-5.6 %), the developed denuder cannot be reused more than once. However, it is possible to regenerate the denuder with a new silanization step. Comparative laser and thermal treatments were carried out on PG36, a green phthalocyanine-based pigment, permitted in European countries where legislation on tattoo composition was issued. Prior to the treatments, PG36 was characterized by SEM imaging, EDX, IR and UV–Vis spectroscopies, revealing an excess of Si and C and O as compared to the pure halogenated Cu-phthalocyanine. Laser treatments were carried out with a Nd:YAG device applied to H2O and propan-2-ol dispersions. Pyrolysis and calcinations were carried out in air or under N2 flow. The outcome of the different procedures was analyzed by UV–Vis spectroscopy, GC–mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction of the solid residues, SEM microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The comparative analysis indicated the production of different fragment compounds depending on the treatment, (pyrolysis or laser), and, to some extent, to the solvent of the dispersion, with pyrolysis generating a larger number of hazardous compounds. Hydrocarbons and cyclic siloxanes present as additives in PG36 were stable or degraded depending on the treatment. The morphology of the products is also treatment-dependent with nanoparticles

Tattoo practice is on the rise worldwide, including eastern countries [1]. In terms of regulations, only a few countries in Europe have issued a legislation on tattoo and permanent make-up inks composition, whereas Asian regulations, to the extent where we had access, are more focused on the practice of tattoos, rather than on ink composition [2]. In this framework, it appears that the same producers (such as Eternal Ink) has bottles of the same ink with different labels, for European and Asian markets, and more specifically with the indication For Asia Market only on the one destined to the Asiatic market. This triggered our comparative study of a green tattoo ink, the Green Concentrate by the Eternal Ink, to determine potential differences (Figure 1). The investigation has been carried out in order to explore all components of a tattoo ink, i.e. the pigment(s) and the vehicle, including additives and possible metal pollutants. It turns out that the major pigment is, in both cases, the PG7, i.e. the hexadecachloro copper phthalocyanine, C.I. 74260, restricted in Europe [3], though it is reported to be PG36, i.e. the hexabromodecachloro copper phthalocyane C.I. 74265 on the EU bottle. Toxic cyclic siloxanes are also present [4] as well as hydrocarbons. In both cases carcinogenic components have been detected and metals above the allowed threshold. Some differences are detected in the type of hydrocarbons present, sometimes characterized by different toxicity. Furthermore, an additional yellow ink is suspected to be mostly present in the Asian ink.

Ammonia is a common factor linking air in bat caves and air pollution in the proximity of agricultural fields treated with livestock farming sewage and slaughterhouses, where important clusters of COVID-19 have recently been reported all over the world. Such a commonality has a further connection with the known behavior of some viruses of the coronavirus family, such as the murine hepatitis virus, whose spike glycoprotein (S) can be triggered to a membrane-binding conformation at pH 8.0. Within the airborne route of virus transmission, with particular relevance for crowded and enclosed environments, these observations have prompted a hypothesis that may represent a contributing cause to interpret the geographical variability of the virus diffusion and the surging rise of COVID-19 cases in slaughterhouses all over the world. The hypothesis is that, in these environments, the SARS-CoV-2 S protein may find on a fraction of the airborne particles an alkaline pH, favorable to trigger the conformational changes, needed to induce the fusion of the viral envelope with the plasma membrane of the target cells.

Asbestos containing materials (ACMs) are currently landfilled or encapsulated, but this may lead to the release of fibres in the environment. Hence, the destruction of asbestos containing waste (ACW) is now regarded as a preferable option. Thermal treatments based on chrysotile and amphibole asbestos dehydroxylation and recrystallization are being successfully developed for this purpose. This study investigates the emission of asbestos fibres from a prototype for asbestos treatment. Other atmospheric pollutants measured include carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs). Both cement-asbestos and ACM containing polyurethane were tested. No asbestos fibres were found, neither in the emission nor in the solid residue. The concentration of NOx, SO2 and heavy metals are comparable with municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) and cement plants. PAHs, BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) and styrene are higher in the presence of polyurethane. The presence of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in the coating of asbestos cement can increase the emission of halogenated VOCs, PCBs and PCDD/Fs. Our results confirm that asbestos inertisation is a safe process for the environment and human health, and economically competitive with landfills.

The toxicity of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) is well known, and for this reason studying and monitoring these chemicals is fundamental. Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are made of an adsorbent material widely used in the industrial field for the removal of micropollutants. The first step in this work was to perform a physico-chemical characterization of the adsorbent, focused on the analytical use of it. In particular, its specific surface area was defined around 2500 m2/g consisting in a homogeneous microporosity distribution and the characterization of ACF surface functional groups pointed out a balance between basic and acidic group. The validity of using the ACF as solid phase extraction and as passive sampler for PCDD/Fs and PCBs in water, has been evaluated by the percentage recovery (R %) of 13C12-labeled standards of PCDD/Fs and PCBs added in a known volume of water. The results were compared to the R% of Liquid-Liquid Extraction which showed a better reproducibility of the results and the proposed method satisfy completely the requirements of US EPA reference methods.

Magnetite (Fe3O4) nano-particles (MNPs) have been found in human tissues and causally linked to serious illnesses. The possible negative role of MNPs has been not still fully ascertained even though MNPs might cause health effects due to their magnetic property, redox activity and surface charge. The origin of MNPs in human tissues still remains to be unambiguously identified since biological processes, natural phenomena and anthropogenic production have been proposed. According to this latter increasingly convincing hypothesis, anthropogenic MNPs might enter mainly in the human body via inhalation, penetrate deeply into the lungs and in the alveoli and also migrate into the blood circulation and gather in the extrapulmonary organs and central nervous system. In order to identify the releasing source of the potentially inhalable MNPs, we pioneered an innovative approach to rapidly investigate elemental profile and morphology of a large number of airborne micron and sub-micron-sized Fe-bearing particles (FePs). The study was performed by collecting a large amount of micron and sub-micron sized inhalable airborne FePs in trafficked and densely frequented areas of Rome (Italy). Then, we have investigated individually the elemental profile and morphology of the collected particles by means of high-spatial resolution scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and an automated software purposely developed for the metal-bearing particles analysis. On the basis of specific elemental tracing features, the investigation reveals that almost the total amount of the airborne FePs is released by the vehicle braking systems mainly in the form of magnetite. Furthermore, we point out that our approach might be more generally used to identify the releasing sources of different inorganic airborne particles and to contribute to establish more accurately the impact of specific natural or anthropogenic particles on the environment and human health.

Laboratory and field studies were carried out to assess the effects of oxidative degradation and volatilization on PM10 bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), collected at low volume condition according to the EU sampling reference method EN12341:2014 (flow rate 2.3 m(3) h(-1)), on 47 mm quartz filters. For the laboratory experiments, pairs of twin samples were collected in field and, after treatments favoring decomposition or/and volatilization of PAHs on one sample, the PAH amount was compared with that of the corresponding untreated sample. Ozone exposure caused a general PAHs decay with more marked effects on benzo [a]pyrene, perylene and benz [a]anthracene; these compounds showed, similarly to benzo [ghi]perylene, correlations between ozone dose and losses. Treatments with zero air exhibited losses due to volatilization even for 5-ring PAHs up to benzo [a]pyrene, whereas a linear dependence was observed between filter PAH load and losses for benzo [a]anthracene, chrysene and benzofluoranthenes. Concentrations on samples collected simultaneously over 48, 24, 12 and 6 h were compared. Results confirmed a lack of temporal auto-consistency in the PAHs sampling methodology here adopted. In particular higher atmospheric PAH concentrations were ascertained on samples constituted by cumulative filters exposed over shorter sampling times. When 24 h and 2 x 12-h samples were compared, comparable losses were evaluated in the hot and cold seasons. This finding shows that, although in summer meteorology conditions favor sampling artifacts, the effectiveness of these phenomena continue in the winter, probably due to the larger amount of PAH available on the sampling filter (total PAHs similar to 10 vs 0.5 ng m(-3)). Polychlorinated byphenyls (PCBs) are a class of Persistent Organic Pollutants extremely hard to remove from soil. The use of plants to promote the degradation of PCBs, thanks to synergic interactions between roots and the natural soil microorganisms in the rhizosphere, has been proved to constitute an eective and environmentally friendly remediation technique. Preliminary microcosm experiments were conducted in a greenhouse for 12 months to evaluate the capacity of the Monviso hybrid poplar clone, a model plant for phytoremediation, to grow in a low quality and PCB-contaminated soil in order to assess if this clone could be subsequently used in a field experiment. For this purpose, three dierent soil conditions (Microbiologically Active, Pre-sterilized and Hypoxic soils) were set up in order to assess the capacity of this clone to grow in the polluted soil in these dierent conditions and support the soil microbial community activity. The growth and physiology (chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, ascorbate, phenolic compounds and flavonoid contents) of the poplar were determined. Moreover, chemical analyses were performed to assess the concentrations of PCB indicators in soil and plant roots. Finally, the microbial community was evaluated in terms of total abundance and activity under the dierent experimental conditions. Results showed that the poplar clone was able to grow eciently in the contaminated soil and to promote microbial transformations of PCBs. Plants grown in the hypoxic condition promoted the formation of a higher number of higher-chlorinated PCBs and accumulated lower PCBs in their roots. However, plants in this condition showed a higher stress level than the other microcosms, producing higher amounts of phenolic, flavonoid and ascorbate contents, as a defence mechanism. It is known that when fires or explosions involve electrical systems, along with PCDDs and PCDFs, polychlorinated biphenylenes (PCBPs) are also produced. These chlorinated tricyclic aromatic pollutants were noticed in fire rubbles and after the World Trade Center destruction. However, the analytical difficulties in developing an efficient method have limited the knowledge of their environmental distribution. In light of the equipotency of 2,3,6,7-TeCBP and 2,3,7,8-TeCDD, PCBPs call for more accurate investigations. In this paper, for the first time, the level and persistence of 2,3,6,7-TeCBP have been investigated in air samples (both indoor and outdoor) after a fire broke out in an industrial building. GC–MS/MS analysis revealed that 2,3,6,7-TeCBP concentrations after the fire (3046 fg/m3 at the “epicentre”) were remarkably higher than that of the 2,3,7,8-TeCDD. Moreover, the monitoring for over two years has demonstrated the persistent nature of this compound. 2,3,6,7-TeCBP was also analyzed in two different ambient air scenario: industrial and periurban areas and in both cases its concentrations were no matter of concern, confirming the correlation of 2,3,6,7-TeCBP with fire episodes. Collectively, 2,3,6,7-TeCBP, because of its toxicity, concentration and persistence, is a crucial compound in the evaluation of the health effects correlated with fires of electrical systems.

Drying is a critical point for the exploitation of biomass for energy production. High moisture content negatively affects the efficiency of power generation in combustion and gasification systems. Different types of dryers are available however; it is known that rotary dryers have low cost of maintenance and consume 15% and 30% less in terms of specific energy. The study analyzed the drying process of woody residues using a new prototype of mobile rotary dryer cocurrent flow. Woodchip of poplar (Populus spp.), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), and grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) pruning were dried in a rotary drier. The drying cycle lasted 8 h for poplar, 6 h for black locust, and 6 h for pruning of grapevine. The initial biomass had a moisture content of around 50% for the poplar and around 30% for grapevine and black locust. The study showed that some characteristics of the biomass (e.g., initial moisture content, particle size distribution, bulk density) influence the technical parameters (i.e., airflow temperature, rate, and speed) of the drying process and, hence, the energy demand. At the end of the drying process, 17% of water was removed for poplar wood chips and 31% for grapevine and black locust wood chips. To achieve this, result the three-biomass required 1.61 (poplar), 0.86 (grapevine), and 1.12 MJ kgdry solids−1 (black locust), with an efficiency of thermal drying (η) respectively of 37%, 12%, and 27%. In the future, the results obtained suggest an increase in the efficiency of the thermal insulation of the mobile dryer, and the application of the mobile dryer in a small farm, for the recovery of exhaust gases from thermal power plants.

In biogas upgrading to biomethane, the release of CO2 off-gas into the atmosphere is generally regarded as a carbon-neutral emission, but a significant loss of CH4 can occur in this step: considering the global warming potential of this latter compound, methane slip can worsen or even nullify the CO2 savings associated to biomethane. This study investigates a novel approach for biogas upgrading to biomethane, aimed at reducing the methane loss. A plant based on hot potassium carbonate was fed with 150–200 Nm3 h−1 of biogas from municipal waste. CO2 is removed in a K2CO3 absorption column, with negligible CH4 absorption. An assessment of biomethane quality was performed to check its compliance with recent National and European standard specifications. Results show that a methane slip below 0.1% can be achieved with this technology, thus significantly reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated to biomethane industry. This leads to a lower capital expenditure because no off-gas post-treatment is required. Heat and electricity consumption were monitored, and operational expense resulted to be lower than membrane separation in the specific case study, by applying life cycle cost (LCC) methodology.

The increased interest in using farm-grown biomass for energy production makes it necessary to expand and deepen knowledge on combustion of agricultural residues. The lack of data and studies on solid fuel quality, and combustion related emissions, represents an obstacle to the sustainable development of agricultural biomass industry. In the Mediterranean basin, large quantities of lignocellulosic biomass are obtained yearly from pruning operations carried out largely widespread in fruit plantations such as citrus, grapevine and olive orchards. The most common practice to eliminate this type of residue is the open burning, carried out directly on the field by farmers, without any emissions control or energy recovery. The aim of this study was to obtain a clear description of three different wood biomasses and their behavior during combustion. The physicochemical properties were studied to determine their influence on combustion emissions. Measurements were conducted in laboratory and subsequently carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), Total Organic Compounds (TOC), and particulate matter (PM) emissions were evaluated during combustion in a 30 kW boiler equipped with a multicyclone filter bags for emission abatement. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to the data of biomass properties and emissions parameters in order to elucidate which feedstock features had a more determinant influence on the combustion process. Grapevine and citrus showed high N content and consequent high NOx production. Olive highlighted the best characteristics, high energetic potential and low emissions under regulation limits; in addition, olive pruning residues is the most available woodfuel in the Mediterranean area of Europe, confirming its great potential on agricultural biomass industry sustainable development.

Co-combustion of biomass and plastic waste has emerged as one of the most promising approach at the plastic waste management challenge. This strategy is particularly attractive since it can simultaneously solve the increasing energy demand and reduce the plastic wastes volume. However, since the combustion of both plastic wastes and natural materials is a potential source of organic micropollutants, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), beside particulate matter, the environmental sustainability of the waste to energy (WtE) co-combustion strategy has to be assessed. To this end, the emissions of dioxin like (dl)-PCBs, PCDD/Fs and PAHs from a 4-MW thermal power plant fueled with rice husk, partially replaced by end-of-life polyethylene (PE) industrial waste (up to 15% of the thermal power of the plant), were investigated. GC-MS/MS analyses have demonstrated that the co-combustion of PE waste and rice husk presents a profile of environmental sustainability. The concentrations of dl-PCBs, PCDD/Fs and PAHs were extremely low and they have remained almost unaffected by introducing PE in feed. In particular, emissions of PCCD/Fs and dl-PCBs in flue gas were in the range 0.6–1.0 and 0.2–0.6 pg TEQ/Nm3, respectively, while PAHs concentrations ranged from 410 to 825 ng/Nm3. Furthermore, the emission factors of these organic pollutants were found to be lower with PE increasing rate while particulate matter emissions were not affected by co-combustions. Collectively, the investigation has demonstrated that the noils of the industrial PE, due to the low content in halides and metals, can be used as auxiliary fuel and energetically recycled through co-combustion with rice husk. This case of study represents an effective application of the WtE strategy and a concrete approach to mitigate the threat of plastic pollution.

Homes represent a critical microenvironment in terms of air quality due to the proximity to main particle sources and the lack of proper ventilation systems. Biomass-fed heating systems are still extensively used worldwide, then likely emitting a significant amount of particles in indoor environments. Nonetheless, research on biomass emissions are limited to their effects on outdoor air quality then not properly investigating the emission in indoor environments. To this purpose, the present paper aims to evaluate the exposure to different airborne particle metrics (including both sub- and super-micron particles) and attached carcinogenic compounds in dwellings where three different heating systems were used: open fireplaces, closed fireplaces and pellet stoves. Measurements in terms of particle number, lung-deposited surface area, and PM fraction concentrations were measured during the biomass combustion activities, moreover, PM 10 samples were collected and chemically analyzed to obtain mass fractions of carcinogenic compounds attached onto particles. Airborne particle doses received by people exposed in such environments were evaluated as well as their excess lung cancer risk. Most probable surface area extra-doses received by people exposed to open fireplaces on hourly basis (56 mm 2 h −1 ) resulted one order of magnitude larger than those experienced for exposure to closed fireplaces and pellet stoves. Lifetime extra risk of Italian people exposed to the heating systems under investigation were larger than the acceptable lifetime risk (10 −5 ): in particular, the risk due to the open fireplace (8.8 × 10 −3 ) was non-negligible when compared to the overall lung cancer risk of typical Italian population.

The artifacts induced by oxidative degradation and volatilization were assessed with regards to determination of particulate atmospheric PAHs collected at low volume conditions (2.3 m3 h−1) according to the EU Reference Method EN 12341:2014. In order to evaluate the oxidative degradation, PAH measures carried out through collecting airborne particulate with and without ozone denuders were examined. Simultaneously, the influence of volatilization was investigated by comparing concentrations of PAHs in particulate samples collected over 24-h and 12-h using conventional instruments. Summer and winter/spring campaigns were carried out in order to assess the influence of environmental contour on the artifact processes. Oxidative degradation led to a general decrease of PAH concentrations in both periods; in particular, the highest losses were observed for benzo[a]pyrene and perylene reaching, in average, ca. 20%. In the summer, the effect of volatilization exceeded that of oxidative degradation for light PAHs up to benzo[e]pyrene. In the winter/spring time, the influence of both artifact typologies could be mitigated by splitting the normal 24-h collection interval starting at midnight into two 12-h intervals. A mitigation of the losses could even be obtained by fixing the start time sampling fixed at noon or in the first hours of the day. Finally, the feasibility of collecting PAHs through prolonged sampling (>1 month) at the flow rate of 1.1 L min−1 was preliminarily investigated. Results indicated that this approach is unsuitable for minimizing the oxidative artifacts.

The European and American methods for the determination of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorodibenzofurans in stationary source emissions require a high-resolution mass spectrometer detector. At the same time, all of the 17 toxic 2,3,7,8-chlorine-substituted isomers have to be separated by an appropriate chromatographic method. The resulting analysis has long runtimes and sometimes a double-column run is needed, which results in a huge waste of time, money and manual labor. To obtain a fast and cost-effective but still reliable analytical system, a single-column gas chromatography with hydrogen as carrier gas and tandem mass spectrometry detection is proposed. The use of hydrogen as the carrier gas is a good choice to shorten runtimes and improve the chromatographic resolution, while tandem mass spectrometry is a well-known alternative for this analysis. All the chromatographic and mass spectrometric parameters fill the requirements of the reference methods with a 35% reduction of runtimes. The accuracy is tested with three fly ash samples of a proficiency interlaboratory test. A good correlation between the results is obtained (R2 = 0.992, slope = 0.9675), and no coelutions are noted. The system robustness is tested during 5 years of constant use and the maximal relative standard deviation of the relative response factor is 18.8%.

Cement plants are responsible for particle and gaseous emissions into the atmosphere. With respect to particle emission, the greater part of is in the range from 0.05 to 5.0 µm in diameter. In the last years attention was paid to submicron particles, but there is a lack of available data on the emission from stationary sources. In this paper, concentration and size distribution of particles emitted from four cement kilns, in relationship to operational conditions (especially the use of alternative fuel to coal) of the clinker process are reported. Experimental campaigns were carried out by measuring particles concentration and size distribution at the stack of four cement plants through condensation particle counter (CPC) and scanning mobility particle sizer spectrometer (SMPS). Average total particle number concentrations were between 2000 and 4000 particles/cm³, about 8-10 times lower that those found in the corresponding surrounding areas. As for size distribution, for all the investigated plants it is stable with a unimodal distribution (120-150 nm), independent from the fuel used.

Recognized as toxicants, polychlorobiphenys (PCBs) are now prohibited for use, and their contents in emissions, wastes and media is subjected to regulation. Nevertheless PCB still affect all compartments of our world of life, due to their wide applications (e.g., as component of transformer oils, heat capacitors, ink and pesticide solvents/mixtures, etc.) and their persistence combined with hydrophobicity and lipophilicity. This problem looks even harder in developing countries, where only recently environmental preservation has begun a theme, and clean technologies suffer delays to be introduced. The study here presented was carried out inside the industrial district belonging to Entreprise Nationale Des Peintures (EPL), located close to Lakhdaria city, Bouira province, Algeria. There, gaseous organic contaminants were investigated by means of dedicated diffusive sampling techniques. Primarily, the gaseous fraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was characterized by means of Analyst 2 collection devices in seven locations inside the industrial plant, from Oct 22, 2014 to Feb 1, 2015. PAH congeners from naphthalene to pyrene could be identified and quantified. Nevertheless, the air of interiors revealed to be particularly affected by PCBs, which could be identified by mass spectrometric spectrums and retention times compared with authentic standard mixtures. Individual PCBs containing 3 to 5 chlorine atoms were the principal contaminants (it must be underlined that congeners with >6 Cl atoms exist overall in the particulate phase). The mean PCB concentrations at the seven sampling points over the sampling period ranged from 0.55 up to 42 ng/m3. Big differences were observed from location to location, especially from external points and interiors. Besides, the concentrations resulted everywhere quite "high", compared to usual values recorded in the air (

The sampling of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere is often performed on filters, which retain only aerosol particles, disregarding the vapor fraction; after the filter, an adsorbent (e.g., polyurethane foam, PUF, or styrene/divinylbenzene, XAD) is sometimes used for sampling vapors not retained from the filter. However, the use of an adsorbent may lead to many disadvantages: contaminations, analysis time and costs, and size problems when developing automated or personal samplers. In this work, a functionalized glass fiber filter for the simultaneous sampling of aerosol particles and vapor fraction is presented for the sampling of PAHs in air. A low sampling efficiency was observed for 3 ring PAHs, but all carcinogenic PAHs (according to IARC) were totally retained on functionalized filters. On the other hand, a comparison with normal filter sampling was performed, and results obtained confirm that > 10% of benzo(a)pyrene can be lost from normal filters. Together with size reduction, another advantage of the functionalized filter is an enhancement in the extraction and purification recovery.

This study investigated the influence of different charge typologies and additives on the PCDD/Fs amount produced and on the congener profiles in an iron ore sintering plant. Many tests were carried out combining different typologies of charge (iron materials) and solid fuel ('coke breeze' or 'anthracite') with or without the use of urea. The PCDD/Fs produced ranged from 1.2 to 22.7 {mu} g I-TEQ/ton of agglomerate, whereas the PCDD/Fs released to the ambient air ranged from 0.10 to 1.92 ng I-TEQ/Nm{sup 3} because of cleaning in an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and a Wetfine scrubber (WS). A more homogeneous charge with a higher amount of fine particles charge appeared to produce a lower PCDD/Fs concentration due to a better combustion but this hypothesis needs further investigations on charges having different dimension particles. Only a synergitic action of urea and anthracite was able to reduce the high PCDD/Fs content due to the bad combustion of the more inhomogeneous charge with a lower amount of fine particles. The congener profile was a typical combustion process fingerprint because the PCDFs predominated, the highly chlorinated congeners (HeptaCDD and OctaCDD) prevailed in PCDDs, whereas in PCDFs the profile was more varied; 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HeptaCDF was the main contributormore » to the total concentration while 2,3,4,7,8-PentaCDF was the main contributor to the I-TEQ concentration. Whereas all the parameters under scrutiny influenced strongly the amount of PCDD/Fs produced, they affected only slightly the fingerprint of PCDD/Fs. In all cases studied, the reduction obtained using urea, anthracite, or the more homogeneous charge with a higher amount of fine particles was slightly greater on the higher chlorinated congeners in respect to the lower ones.« less

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are typical pollutants arising from incineration. They are produced in any incomplete combustion principally due to inhomogeneities in a combustion chamber. The effects of the afterburning temperature on PAHs formation during sewage sludge incineration are discussed in this paper. Tests were performed inside the area of the wastewater treatment plant of 'Bari Ovest' on a demonstrative plant (maximum throughput 250 kg hr(-1) of dewatered sludge at 20% solids concentration) equipped with a fluidised bed furnace (FBF) and a rotary kiln furnace (RKF) where sewage sludge was fed, either as it was taken from the dewatering section of the wastewater treatment plant, or previously spiked by different dosages of chlorinated hydrocarbons. Exhaust gases were sampled before the bag filter, where the pollutants can be considered representative of those arising from the process. Parallel sampling of flue gas at the stack was also carried out. In the FBF tests with sludge spiked with high dosages of chlorinated hydrocarbons highest values of PAHs concentrations (> 3.9 mug Nm(-3)) were detected before filtration, when the afterburning chamber was not in use. The operation of the afterburning chamber, at a temperature higher than 900degreesC, allows to partially suppress PAHs formation up to values of 0.9 - 3.2 mug Nm(-3). PAHs removal efficiency of the exhaust gas treatment was calculated with a mean value for all the test of 72%. In RKF tests PAHs displayed much lower values before filtration ( range 0.04 - 2.98 mug Nm(-3), mean value 0.51 mug Nm(-3)) probably due to the longer gas residence time in the furnace (> 6 s in comparison with values < 2 s in fluidised bed furnace). Surprisingly, for RKF tests PAHs removal efficiency of gas treatment appeared quite unstable: some tests evidenced PAHs stripping in the scrubber, where the effluent of the wastewater treatment plant was used. No correlation was observed in RKF tests between PAHs concentration before the bag filter and the temperature of the afterburning chamber.
