Citizenship education is historically linked with political developments that have forced governments to think deeper about nationality, power, identity, and the process of decolonization since large sectors of the population are denied and even excluded from the development of their citizenship. Currently, there is a need to provide mechanisms that foster the development of students' citizenship by enabling them to position themselves critically, politically, responsibly, and constructively in their own sociocultural contexts. These mechanisms contribute towards offering the intellectual tools needed to participate in society and also can encourage educators to develop pedagogical actions that stimulate students to develop their citizenship and be aware of problems they face in their communities. Thus, results of a study conducted in a public middle school, located in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, with 12 eighth-grade middle school students enrolled in a state public school, who are residents in a peripheral community, showed how ethnomodelling contributed to the development of mathematical content, which helped them to understand and propose solutions to the lack of basic sanitation. We concluded that competencies to analyze, decide, and judge solutions through the elaboration of ethnomodels helped students to make decisions to local and global problems, which promoted the development of their citizenship as well as the acknowledgment that the denial and exclusion process of peripheral communities' members still prevails in modern society. This article aims to analyze how academic research that deals with Ethnomodelling is presented. It is worth noting that Ethnomodelling is understood here as an alternative methodological approach, which seeks to systematize the mathematical knowledge of different cultural groups. For this purpose, mapping was used in educational research through two stages: 1) data apprehension, where searches were carried out in the Catalog of Theses and Dissertations of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and in the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD); 2) significance of these data, where research analysis was carried out through the a priori categories: research question; theoretical framework for research; research context; and research results. The analysis showed evidence that both Mathematical Modeling, Ethnomathematics, or Ethnomodelling, contribute to the learning process, and can be used as pedagogical tools for teaching Mathematics.

GLOCALIZATION , *MATHEMATICAL forms , *ACCULTURATION , *MATHEMATICAL models - Abstract
Ethnomodelling can be considered as the association between ethnomathematics and mathematical modelling that enables members of distinct cultural groups to perceive a different reality in relation to the nature of mathematical knowledge. It also provides insights into many diverse forms of mathematics developed locally. Thus, ethnomodelling is defined as the study of mathematical phenomena that adds cultural components to the modelling process. The development of this connection is conducted through three cultural approaches: local, global, and glocal, which are used in the conduction of ethnomodelling investigations that aim to work against colonialism in order to value and respect sociocultural diversity of members of distinct cultural groups. Because ethnomodelling seeks to promote the development of understanding of differences through dialogue; it is important to argue for its inclusion as a translational process for systems taken from the reality of the members of diverse cultures. In this article we argue that ethnomodelling creates a firm foundation that allows for the integration of these three cultural approaches in exploring mathematical knowledge developed in distinct cultural groups through cultural dynamism. Atag functions as a place for the air curing process to dry tobacco leaves. This building, which is made of bamboo, has existed in Indonesia since 1850 and used to produce authentic quality cigars. Initially, this building was only utilized for local materials, however, based on the shape, dimensions, and construction, there is a tendency for atag to be established by considering several technical aspects. Therefore, this study aims to examine the technical ideas, such as calculations, practices, and procedures for making Atag using the ethnomodelling strategy. The results showed that the community's practices and calculations in building atag were a logical response in adapting to natural conditions such as climate, wind, and humidity. It also provided intelligence in utilizing the potential of local materials such as bamboo and sugarcane leaves

This article aims to present a proposal of introductory activities to the concept of linear function for schools inserted in extractive regions, in which Ethnomathematics and Mathematical Modelling are related. To this end, a teaching sequence was elaborated for the 9th year of Elementary School, which aims to value the knowledge of the workers in their daily routines – hunting and selling crab in mangroves of cities located in the south of Bahia – and to relate them to the study of Mathematics contents. The work supports the idea that it is possible to construct a teaching sequence for the introduction of the concept of linear function, using the Ethnomodelling approach. It is believed that the application of the sequence may make learning more meaningful, in which students from that cultural context may see meaning for the learning of Mathematics.

GLOCALIZATION , *SOCIAL constructionism , *MATHEMATICAL models , *EDUCATION & society , *MATHEMATICS education - Abstract
The acquisition of both local (emic) and global (etic) knowledge forms an important goal for the implementation of ethnomodelling research. Local knowledge (emic) is essential for an intuitive and empathic understanding of mathematical ideas, procedures, and practices developed throughout history. Global knowledge (etic) is essential for the achievement of cross-cultural comparisons that demand standard analytical units and categories to enable communication. Glocalization (dialogic) uses both local and global knowledge through dialogue, and interaction through translation. We define ethnomodelling as the study of mathematical phenomena within a culture because it is a culturally bound social construct while ethnomodelling brings cultural aspects of mathematics into the mathematical modelling process. The main objective of this theoretical article is to share our reflections from feedback from ongoing work in ethnomodelling. In this article we discuss the local, global, and glocal approaches necessary for the development of ethnomodeling research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An Ethnomathematics-based curriculum helps students demonstrate consistent mathematical processes as they reason, solve problems, communicate ideas, and choose appropriate representations through the development of daily mathematical practices. As well, it recognizes connections with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Our pedagogical work, in relation to STEM Education, is based on the Trivium Curriculum for mathematics and ethnomodelling, which provides communicative, analytical, material, and technological tools to the development of emic, etic, and dialogic approaches that are necessary for the elaboration of the school curricula. STEM Education facilitates pedagogical action that connects ethnomathematics; mathematical modelling, problem-solving, critical judgment, and making sense of mathematical and non-mathematical environments, which involves distinct ways of thinking, reasoning, and developing mathematical knowledge in distinct sociocultural contexts. The ethnomathematical perspective for STEM Education proposed here provides a transformative pedagogy that exposes its power to transform students into critical and reflective citizens in order to enable them to transform society in a glocalized world.

Ethnomathematical connections and ethnomodelling processes that emerge in the making of Mexican spinning tops and tacos were explored. Theoretically, the research was based on the notions of ethnomathematical connection and ethnomodelling. The methodology was qualitative-ethnographic developed in three stages, selection of taco participants, application of semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis of data. It was evidenced that merchants use measurement units (kilogram), make money counts in the sale of taco orders, and arithmetic operations. Likewise, ethnomathematical and ethnomodelling connections with Integral Calculus between the construction of meat spinning tops (emic) and the paraboloid (etic) to which its volume and proposal of applications for mathematics classes with GeoGebra and similarities with book problems were found Calculation.

It is important to seek for alternative methodological approaches, while western mathematical practices are accepted worldwide to record historical forms of mathematical ideas and procedures that occur in diff erent cultural contexts. An alternative methodological approach is ethnomodelling, which we consider as the practical application of ethnomathematics that adds the cultural perspective to the concepts of mathematical modelling. In this context, sophisticated mathematical ideas and practices, including geometric principles in craftwork, architectural concepts and practices, are found in activities and artifacts of many local and global cultures. Th ese concepts are related to numerical relationships found in measurement, calculation, games, divination, navigation, astronomy, modelling and in a wide variety of other mathematical procedures, as well as in cultural artifacts, through the development of ethnomodellin Es importante buscar enfoques metodológicos alternativos, mientras las prácticas matemáticas occidentales sean aceptadas a nivel mundial, para registrar formas históricas de ideas y procedimientos matemáticos que se dan en diferentes contextos culturales.

The need to think about new methodologies for teaching Mathematics, especially from subjects related to students’ daily life, motivated the accomplishment of this work, through the Ethnomodelling, which aims to identify mathematical ethnomodels present in the construction of the wall of the Cemetery and its square of the city of Arraias -TO providing the knowledge of part of the local reality. Considering that the knowledge acquired by cultural groups transferred from generation to generation can be important tools for students’ learning, we have prepared a proposal of Ethnomodelling that allows to observe some ethnomodels and to use them as didactic resources. This research on ethnomodelling was conducted in both a state public school and in a local farmers’ market in a metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, in Brazil. The main objective of this study was to identify how dialogic approaches of ethnomodelling could contribute to the process of re-signification of function concepts learned by 38 students in the second year of high school during their interaction with a local farmer and his labor practices. Another objective was to understand the importance of cultural conceptions and elaboration of ethnomodels extracted from the mathematical practices developed by this farmer for use as a pedagogical action in the classrooms. For the data collection, three blocks of activities were used, two questionnaires (initial and final), a semi-structured interview with the farmer, a seminar with students and the farmer, and the teacher-researcher fieldnotes. The collected data, both of a quantitative and qualitative nature, were analyzed simultaneously with the use of the Mixed Method Study through a QUAN + QUAL design. After this analysis, qualitative data were quantified in order to enable the interpretation of the results through the elaboration of three categories School Environment, Out-of-School Environment and Dialogical Environment. The results of this study show that ethnomodelling provides an integrative approach to school mathematics curriculum by considering both the emic and etic mathematical knowledge through the development of a dialogic approach that shows the relevance of its cultural dynamism.

One important objective of this theoretical article is to discuss the mathematical knowledge of a farmer during the development of his labor practices in relation to the selling of horticultural products. Another objective is to discuss how these practices can enrich the mathematical concepts developed in school environments. We emphasize that the empirical data used in this work were obtained through the conduction of a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education, whose dissertation entitled Resignifying the concepts of a Mixed Study function to Understand the Contributions of the Dialogical Approach of Ethnomodelling, which was carried out in the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto. For the theoretical basis we support mainly in the studies of ethnomodeling developed by Rosa and Orey (2012), in the conception of positionality of D’ Olne Campos (2000) and also the ethnomathematics program as proposed by D’Ambrosio (1990). It was found that ethnomodelling enables interaction between the knowledge developed outside of the school environment (farmer) and inside of the school (students), and broadens worldviews through mutual respect and appreciation of cultural differences.

"ICME-13 Topical Surveys. ISSN 2366-5947", This survey on the modernity of ethnomathematics addresses numerous themes related to both ethnomathematics and mathematics education. It offers a broader view of mathematics, including ideas, procedures, concepts, processes, methods, and practices rooted in distinct cultural environments. In addition, by reflecting on the social and political dimensions of ethnomathematics, another important aspect of this research program is the development of innovative approaches for a dynamic and glocalized society. Ethnomathematics recognizes that members of different cultures develop unique mathematical techniques, methods, and explanations that allow for an alternative understanding and transformation of societal norms. The theoretical basis of ethnomathematics offers a valid alternative to traditional studies of history, philosophy, cognition, and pedagogical aspects of mathematics. The current agenda for ethnomathematics is to continue an ongoing, progressive trajectory that contributes to the achievement of social justice, peace, and dignity for all. The debates outlined in this book share a few of the key ideas that provide for a clearer understanding of the field of ethnomathematics and its current state of the art by discussing its pedagogical actions, its contributions for teacher education, and its role in mathematics education., CIEC – Research Centre on Child Studies, IE, UMinho (FCT R&D unit 317), Portugal, National Funds through the FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) and co-financed by European Regional Development Funds (FEDER) through the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program (POCI) with the reference POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007562, info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion, https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-30120-4

- Abstract
Ethnomathematical techniques and modelling tools allow us to examine systems taken from the real world and offer us insight into forms of mathematics performed in holistic contexts [3]. A pedagogical approach that connects a diversity of cultural forms of mathematics can be implemented by the use of ethnomodelling, a process of translation and elaboration of problems and questions taken from non-academic systems. Here, we offer examples of studies conducted in Brazil and in the United States that explore this pedagogical approach. Our goal is to broaden the discussion of possibilities for ethnomathematics and associated ethnomodelling perspectives that respect the social diversity of distinct cultural group members with guarantees for the development of understanding of the different ways of doing mathematics through dialogue and respect.
