This book delves into the complex historical, cultural, and educational ties between Italy and Albania within the realm of media studies, examining various mediums such as press, radio, television, cinema, and the web. Beginning in the late nineteenth century with the inception of the first Albanian-language newspapers in Italy, the analysis progresses to explore the evolving relationship between Albanians and radio, initially focusing on Italian broadcasts before transitioning to national channels. Rapidly, Italian radio becomes a tool for fascist soft power, facilitating fascist Italy's occupation of Albania in 1939. The second section delves into the communist propaganda apparatus, encompassing radio, television, cinema, and music. It offers a comprehensive exploration of television's evolution, from its tentative beginnings in the 1960s to the proliferation of private broadcasters in the post-communist era. Concluding with the emergence of the internet, the book highlights the significant decline of Italian soft power in Albania and the Southern Balkans over the past 15 years. Instead, these regions increasingly look towards the Anglo-Saxon and Turkish spheres as models, not only in media but also in terms of migration and development.

This volume presents geographical journeys that challenge the limits of national or cultural identities, as well as journeys traversed by stories of exile and forced displacement, which become pilgrimages towards themselves, defying, in this process, both the limits of their own identities and the borders between the self and the other. The volume is divided into three parts. The first part explores the circulation of writers and texts which have traveling as a common point of departure; the second part is dedicated to reflecting on the concept of Orientalism from multiple perspectives but preserving the perpetuation of colonial structures of subordination and otherization as a central axis around which all the proposed analyses revolve; the third part is dedicated to the formulation of new cultural patterns and identities in the Philippines, as results of the interactions and interconnectivities between Wests (Spain, United States) and Philippines.

Etwa seit der Jahrtausendwende ist ein internationaler und nach wie vor anhaltender Boom von Adaptionen der griechisch-römischen Mythologie und Historie zu verzeichnen. Dieser ist durch eine bemerkenswerte mediale Vielfalt und Vernetzungsfreude gekennzeichnet. Folglich erstreckt sich die „modernste Antike“ unserer Zeit nicht nur auf hochliterarische Texte oder Neuinszenierungen antiker Dramen auf dem Theater, sondern entfaltet auch in gegenwärtigen Massenmedien vom Historienroman, dem Comic bis hin zum Hypermedium Themenpark und zum Alltagsmedium Internet seinen Wandlungsreichtum. Mithin scheint die Zeit der postmodernen Renaissance der Antike angebrochen zu sein. Die vielschichtigen Phänomene, die sich der altertumswissenschaftlichen Antikenrezeptionsforschung als Gegenstände bieten, sind mit dem Philosophen Hans Blumenberg (1920–1996) zu verstehen als Erscheinungsformen einer modernen Arbeit am Mythos. Als solche eröffnen sie Anschlussmöglichkeiten für neue Geschichten und Verfahrensmöglichkeiten zur ästhetischen und ethischen Auseinandersetzung mit den eigenen Grundfragen menschlichen Daseins im Spannungsfeld von Veralltäglichung und Entalltäglichung. Diese Forschungsaufgabe ist bislang in zahlreichen, teilweise weit verstreuten Einzeluntersuchungen angegangen worden. Oft handelt es sich um Fallstudien oder Ansätze zur Bündelung des reichen Materials. Dies hat zu einer erheblichen fachlichen und methodischen Heterogenität der Zugänge geführt. Dabei werden die sprach-, kulturraumspezifischen und medialen Unterschiede und Zusammenhänge in den Adaptionsstrategien allerdings oft nicht hinreichend reflektiert. Diese Lücke will dieser Band mit seiner synthetisierenden Anlage schließen. Er setzt sich zum Ziel, im Dialog der Fächer die als aussichtsreich erkannten Forschungsfelder vorzustellen. Innerhalb dieser Themenbereiche werden Untersuchungsdesigns für eine betont interdisziplinäre und intermediale Methodik erprobt. Diese streben eine systematische Zwischenbilanz der bisherigen Forschungserträge an und haben das Ziel, die bisherigen Ansätze synergetisch zu verweben. Der Band schafft eine Grundlage, um im Zusammenwirken der Disziplinen die Präsenz und die Bedeutung von Mythos und Historie der griechisch-römischen Antike in den europäischen Sprach- und Kulturräumen der Gegenwart punktgenau untersuchen und einordnen zu können.

This book explores how everyday practices in public space (sitting, playing, walking, etc.) challenge the increase of top-down control in the global city. Public Everyday Space focuses on post-Olympic Barcelona—a time of unprecedented levels of gentrification, branding, mass tourism, and immigration. Drawing from examples observed in public spaces (streets, plazas, sidewalks, and empty lots), as well as in cultural representation (film, photography, literature), this book exposes the quiet agency of those excluded from urban decision-making but who nonetheless find ways to carve out spatial autonomy for themselves. The purpose of the book is to elaborate a planning theory which departs from the plethora of theories which reflect the conditions of developed countries of the North-West. The empirical material of this effort is derived from a country, Greece, which sits on the edge between North-West and South-East, at the corner of Europe. No doubt, there is extensive international literature on planning theory in general from a bewildering variety of viewpoints. The interested professional or student of urban and regional planning is certainly aware of the dizzying flood of books, articles and research reports on planning theory and of their never-ending borrowing of obscure concepts from more respectable scientific disciplines, from mathematics to philosophy and from physics to economics, human geography and sociology. He or she probably observed that there is a growing interest in theoretical approaches from the viewpoint of the so-called “Global South”. The author of the present book has formany decades faced the impasse of attempting to transplant theories founded on the experience of the North-West to countries with a totally different historical, political, social and geographical background. He learned that the reality that planners face is unpredictable, patchy, and responsive to social processes, frequently of a very pedestrian nature. Planning strives to deal with private interests which planners are keen to envelop in a single “public interest”, which is extremely hard to define. The behaviour of the average citizen, far from being that of the neoclassical model of the homo economicus, is that of an individual, a kind of homo individualis, who interacts with the state and the public administration within a complex web of mutual dependence and negotiation. The state and its administrative apparatus, i.e., the key-determinants and fixers of urban and regional planning policy, bargain with this individual, offer inducements, exemptions, derogations andprivileges, deviate unhesitatingly from their grand policy pronouncements, but still defend the rationality and comprehensiveness of the planning system they have legislated and operationalized. It is by and large a successful modus vivendi, but only thanks to a constant practice of compromise. Hence, the term compromise planning, which the author coined as an alternative to all the existing theoretical forms of planning. This is the sort of planning, and of the accompanying theory, with which he deals in this book. It is the outcome of experience and knowledge accumulated in a long personal journey of academic teaching in England and Greece, research, and professional involvement.

Diese kulturvergleichende Perspektive auf Dimensionen von Antibürgerlichkeit eröffnet neue Lesarten eines zentralen Themas der Moderne. Die Bandbreite der Analysen umfasst die ästhetischen Dimensionen von anarchistischen Reformdiskursen und reaktionären Gesellschaftsentwürfen ebenso wie von Modellen einer christlichen Kapitalismuskritik oder der revolutionären Programme der Avantgarden. Vor dem Hintergrund eines Wiedererstarkens antibürgerlicher Formationen in der Gegenwart bietet der Band eine historisch-kritische Diskussion alternativer Sozialimaginationen jenseits der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft.

Die Ausgangsfrage dieser Untersuchung ist, wie sich eine Gesellschaft an den 1. Weltkrieg erinnert und inwiefern sich diese Erinnerung mit der Zeit wandelt. Das Phänomen eines solchen „kollektiven Gedächtnisses“ und die verschiedenen Konzepte von Halbwachs, Nora („lieux de mémoire“), Jan Assmann („kulturelles Gedächtnis“) und Aleida Assmann („Funktions- und Speichergedächtnis“ des kulturellen Gedächtnisses) bilden den theoretischen Rahmen der Arbeit.Das Untersuchungsmedium zur Erforschung der französischen Erinnerungskultur zum 1. Weltkrieg bilden Comics („bande dessinées“), ein in Frankreich etabliertes und nachgefragtes Medium. Im Fokus der Betrachtung steht die Rolle der sogenannten „tirailleurs sénégalais“ in der Erinnerungskultur und wie sich die Kolonialzeit auf ihre Wahrnehmung in der französischen Gesellschaft auswirkte. Unterschieden wird dabei zwischen Tirailleurs als Kolonialsoldaten und der Figur des Tirailleurs als Konstrukt einer vergangenen Kolonialzeit. Den Kern der Arbeit bildet die Analyse zweier ausgewählter Comics. Nach festgelegten Kriterien (Deskription, Authentizität, Darstellung, Beitrag zur Erinnerungskultur) wird hier die Darstellung der Tirailleurs im Comic mit dem Bild der Tirailleurs in der Erinnerungskultur und in der Kolonialzeit verglichen. In den Comics werden aus erinnerungskulturellen Randfiguren und historischen Statisten Hauptfiguren des 1. Weltkriegs und selbstbestimmte Protagonisten postkolonialen Ausmaßes.

Diese Studie analysiert aus komparativer Perspektive die Filmkultur in Spanien und der DDR zur Zeit der Neuen Kinos. Fern von klassischen westeuropäischen Zentren nahmen in diesen Jahren Filmenthusiasten (Filmklubmitglieder, Filmkritiker und -studenten, Archiv- und Festivalbesucher...) an einer Erneuerungswelle transnationalen Charakters teil, die eine Reaktion auf die traditionellen, oft mit staatlichen Initiativen verwobenen Filmlandschaften postulierte. Trotz politischer Einschränkungen wurde die Filmkultur in beiden Diktaturen zu einem lebendigen Feld, das intensiv in die Vergangenheit schaute, sich international neu verortete und über Kino mit einer bis dahin nicht gekannten Intensität debattierte. Dieses Buch rekonstruiert diese Geschichte auf der Grundlage von Archivmaterialien unterschiedlicher Provenienz, Interviews mit Zeitzeugen sowie der Analyse der wichtigsten Publikationen der Zeit und bietet somit einen innovativen Beitrag, der unseren Blick auf die Geschichte der europäischen Filmkultur grundlegend erweitern soll.

Dieser Band zum Begriff „Europa“ beruht auf einer Tagung, die im Winter 2018 in der Carl Friedrich von Siemens Stiftung in München stattfand. Europa in seiner Vielschichtigkeit, in seinem Umbruchcharakter und seiner Faszinationskraft ist von ungebrochener Aktualität. Gleichzeitig ist die europäische Identität durch aktuelle Herausforderungen wie etwa Populismus und Erstarken des Nationalismus gefährdet. Die Beiträge der Tagung gehen der Frage nach, inwieweit die Gegenwartsliteratur und auch aktuelle Filme auf diese Umbrüche reagieren und inwieweit die Rede von einer Krise Europas oder der europäischen Integration in den Bereichen Literatur und Film wahrnehmbar ist. Im historischen Rückblick lässt sich beobachten, dass sich gerade in Destabilisierungs-, Umbruchs- und Krisenmomenten die Intensität des Europa-Diskurses verstärkt und dieser an Komplexität gewonnen hat.

This book develops a theory of aesthetic fiction's impact on social identities. Throughout five case studies, the author develops the argument that social identities are nurtured by and may even emerge through the conflict between different aesthetic expressions. As it creates affective structures, narrative fiction enables the development and formation of political and cultural identities. This work is part of a field of research that deals with the aesthetics of the everyday and the idea of social aesthetics. It argues for a central role for the arts in the creation and formation of modern society. Social identities emerge in response to aesthetic-sensual patterns of perception.Focusing on five West German public debates in the years 1950 to 1990, this work sheds light upon the transformation of social reality through the discursive adaption of art.

The invention of milking and milk use created a new mode of subsistence called pastoralism. On rangelands across Eurasia, pastoralists subsist by extensive animal husbandry and by processing their animals'milk. Based on the author's fieldwork over more than two decades, this book details the processing systems and uses of milk observed in pastoralist and farm households in West Asia, South Asia, North Asia, Central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau, and Europe and the Caucasus. Milk culture in each region is characterized by its processing technology and use of milk, and characteristics common to wider geographical spheres are identified. Inclusion of case studies from the literature expands the continent-wide perspective and provides further indications of how milk culture developed and diffused historically. The inferences drawn are expressed in the author's monogenesis­–bipolarization hypothesis of Eurasian milk culture, that milking and milk processing had a single center of origin in West Asia, and that the technology involved the spread from there across the continent, developing distinct characteristics in northern and southern spheres. Finally, because milk culture underpins pastoralism as a mode of subsistence, the typology and theory of pastoralism are re-examined from the standpoint of milk culture.

This book presents the first in-depth study of the Eurovision Song Contest from an Australian perspective. Using a cultural studies approach, the study draws together fan interviews and surveys with media and textual analysis of the contest itself. In doing so, it begins to answer the question of why the European song contest appeals to viewers in Australia. It explores and challenges the dominant narrative that links Eurovision fandom to post-WWII European migration, arguing that this Eurocentric narrative presents a limited view of how contemporary Australian multicultural society operates in the context of globalized culture. It concludes with a consideration of the future of the Eurovision Song Contest as Australia enters into the ‘Asian century'.

This book explores the space of queer documentary through the modernist optic of Marcel Proust's ‘lieu factice'(artificial place), a perspective that problematizes the location of place in a post-postmodern world with a dispersed sense of the real. The practice of queer documentary in France and Italy, from the beginning of the new millennium onwards, is seen to re-write the coherence of ‘place'through a range of emerging queer realities. Proposing the post-queer as a way of contending with the spatial dynamics of these contexts, analysis of key texts positions place as mourned, conceded and intersectional. The performance of place as agency is considered through the notional film, the radical archive of documentary, the enactment of politics, queer indeterminacy and a phenomenology of the object, the frame and queer mobility. The central themes of family, gender, dis/location, in/visibility and re/presentation question blind investment in the integrity of being emplaced.

This book studies the rollercoaster first year in office of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), which for many Europeans constituted the hope for a different Europe, beyond austerity and national egocentrism. Through a collection of sharp and short articles and interviews that critically chronicle the rapid rise of SYRIZA, the author argues that SYRIZA is not so much a new European phenomenon, but rather a rejuvenated form of an old Greek phenomenon, left populism, which overpromises and seldom delivers. By putting the phenomenon of SYRIZA within a broader Greek and European context, in which political extremism and populism are increasingly threatening liberal democracy, Mudde argues that Greece is neither a new Weimar Germany nor the future of Europe. As SYRIZA has failed to bring the change it promised, the only remaining question now is whether it can establish itself in the Greek party system. This book explores how modernity, the urban, and the sacred overlap in fundamental ways in contemporary Spain. Urban spaces have traditionally been seen as the original sites of modernity, history, progress, and a Weberian systematic disenchantment of the world, while the sacred has been linked to the natural, the rural, mythical past origins, and exemption from historical change. This collection problematizes such clear-cut distinctions as overlaps between the modern urban and the sacred in Spanish culture are explored throughout the volume. Architecture and the Novel under the Italian Fascist Regime discusses the relationship between the novel and architecture during the Fascist period in Italy (1922-1943). By looking at two profoundly diverse aesthetic phenomena within the context of the creation of a Fascist State art, Billiani and Pennacchietti argue that an effort of construction, or reconstruction, was the main driving force behind both projects: the advocated “revolution” of the novel form (realism) and that of architecture (rationalism). The book is divided into seven chapters, which in turn analyze the interconnections between the novel and architecture in theory and in practice. The first six chapters cover debates on State art, on the novel and on architecture, as well as their historical development and their unfolding in key journals of the period. The last chapter offers a detailed analysis of some important novels and buildings, which have in practice realized some of the key principles articulated in the theoretical disputes.

This open access book surveys drinking in Britain between the Licensing Act of 1869 and the wartime regulations imposed on alcohol production and consumption after 1914. This was a period marked by the expansion of the drink industry and by increasingly restrictive licensing laws. Politics and commerce co-existed with moral and medical concerns about drunkenness and combined, these factors pushed alcohol consumers into the public spotlight. Through an analysis of public and private records, medical texts and sociological studies, the book investigates the reasons why Victorians and Edwardians consumed alcohol in the ways that they did and explores the ideas about alcohol that circulated in the period. This book shows that they had many reasons for purchasing and consuming alcoholic substances and these were driven by broader social, cultural, medical and commercial factors. Although drunkenness may have been the most visible consequence of alcohol consumption, it was not the only type of drinking behaviour. Alcohol played an important social role in the everyday lives of Victorians and Edwardians where its consumption held many different meanings.

Recent migration in Europe has a whole range of characteristics which are said to distinguish it from earlier migration, and the description'new migration'is often used. Based on a wide range of empirical case studies of the new migration, this book asks three critical questions. To what extent is the description'new'conceptually valid? How is the new migration defined and by whom? How is the new migration experienced by migrants themselves?
