Introduction Methods Results Conclusion The American continent populations have a wide genetic diversity, as a product of the admixture of three ethnic groups: Amerindian, European, and African Sub‐Saharan. Spinocerebellar ataxia type 10 (SCA10) and Huntington disease‐like 2 (HDL2) have very ancient ancestral origins but are restricted to two populations: Amerindian and African Sub‐Saharan, respectively. This study aimed to investigate the genetic epidemiological features of these diseases in Venezuela.In‐phase haplotypes with the expanded alleles were established in seven unrelated index cases diagnosed with SCA10 and in 11 unrelated index cases diagnosed with HDL2. The origins of remote ancestors were recorded.The geographic origin of the ancestors showed grouping in clusters. SCA10 had a minimal general prevalence of 1:256,174 families in the country, but within the identified geographic clusters, the prevalence ranged from 5 per 100,000 to 43 per 100,000 families. HDL2 had a general prevalence of 1:163,016 families, however, within the clusters, the prevalence ranged from 31 per 100,000 to 60 per 100,000 families. The locus‐specific haplotype shared by all families worldwide, including the Venezuelans, supports a single old ancestral origin in each case.Knowing the genetic ancestry and geographic origins of patients in Ibero‐American mixed populations could have significant diagnostic implications; thus, both diseases in Venezuela should always be first explored in patients with a suggestive phenotype and ancestors coming from the same known geographic clusters. Scholars have argued that, on average, immigrant students are 'optimists' and have higher educational aspirations than non‐migrant students after accounting for students' socio‐economic background and educational performance. However, ethnic minority groups, which proxy the different origin backgrounds of migrants, may show mixed findings in terms of educational aspirations. This study aims to analyse the lyceum (the most theoretical school in Italy) and university aspirations of migrant‐origin students and their Italian counterparts, enrolled respectively in Italian lower (Grade 8: age 13) and upper secondary state schools (Grades 9–11: ages 14–16). The analyses are based on data from the Italian Integration of the Second Generation survey conducted during the 2014/15 school year. Our results show that students having Chinese, Moroccan, Moldovan and other non‐European Union Eastern European origins assume the lowest levels of lyceum aspiration after also considering compositional effects. Conversely, the largest proportion of migrants attending school in Grades 9–11 have higher levels of university aspiration compared to non‐migrants. When considering the role of migratory generation, lyceum and university aspirations are positively associated with the acculturation process of migrants. Furthermore, we found that high family expectations, social relationships and self‐perception benefits of studying have positive associations with both lyceum and university aspirations, especially among migrants. BackgroundFew studies have focused on the clinical characteristics and intestinal flora of Tibetan patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The study aimed to compare the difference of between Tibetan and Han patients with IBS.MethodsPatients who met inclusion and exclusion criteria were divided into the Tibet and Han groups. A simplified Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS)-based questionnaire was used to assess the IBS severity. Fecal samples from all subjects were collected for the analysis of gut microbiota using 16sRNA Illumina sequencing.ResultsNo significant difference was found in the total symptom scores between two groups. However, Tibetans with IBS are more prone to bloating than Hans (17.41% vs 9.09%, p < 0.001). A profit shift in the gut microbiota was shown between the two groups. The ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes was significantly lower in the Tibet group than in the Han group (2.954 ± 0.78 vs 8.23 ± 2.04, p = 0.004). In the Tibet group, the level of the genus Blautia decreased significantly compared to the Han group, and there was a significant negative correlation between the level of Blautia and the bloating scores (Pearson r = −0.33, p = 0.025).ConclusionThe characteristics of Tibetan patients differ from those of Han patients with IBS, not only in terms of the clinical symptoms, but also in the characteristics of intestinal flora. Tibetans with IBS are more prone to bloating, which might be due to the different gut microbiota. The genus Blautia may play a role in this mechanism.

Boundary-crossing teachers are teachers who work in schools with different cultural characteristics than their main belonging group. Fifty-six Israeli teachers who identified themselves as religious teachers in secular schools and 41 teachers of different ethnic origin than most other teachers responded to open-ended questions in an online questionnaire. Qualitative thematic analysis revealed that social and professional connections contribute to teachers’ sense of belonging in the two groups. Teachers of different ethnic origin noted ethnic jokes and various cultural norms as contributing to a sense of otherness, while religious teachers noted the issues of religious practices and the political tensions around religion. The research sheds light on the diversity of diversity, how the sensitivities of each minority group lead to feelings of otherness while the same common good leads to a sense of belonging. Grade repetition is an issue with important educational implications. This study analyzes the effect of cognitive variables, socio-economic status, as well as the interaction of socio-economic status with ethnic origin, on the probability of not repeating. Data were collected to calculate socioeconomic status using the Hollingshead Socioeconomic Index, and the following tests were administered to collect information on cognitive variables: the Primary Mental Aptitude Test (PMA), the Raven's Progressive Matrices Test, and the Wechsler Intelligence for Children Information Scale (WISC IV). The sample consisted of 664 students of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), Baccalaureate and intermediate and higher vocational training. The results confirm the predictive power of socioeconomic status. With regard to cognitive variables, significant results were only obtained when the WISC-IV Information Scale was taken as a predictor, this measure being related to crystallized intelligence. The influence of the origin of the students did not yield significant results. There is a clear need for a debate and a rethinking of the issue leading to the identification of new strategies to reduce grade repetition and its negative effects.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects and correlations of the perceived religious affiliation on a fictitious terrorism case. Participants were 402 French adults who completed a questionnaire after reading a scenario involving the arrest of a person (French vs. North African; man vs. woman) wearing an explosive belt. They indicated the level of the perpetrator's religious affiliation and judged her/him and the act. The participants' level of social dominance orientation (SDO) was measured and studied along in its two dimensions. The results showed an effect of ethnicity on perceived religious affiliation, which was correlated with judgment and mediated the effect of social dominance on judgment. Introduction: Canadian Indigenous populations have a high incidence of poisoning; it has been suggested that care provided to the population living in remote areas is suboptimal. Our study aims to compare the continuum of care of poisoned people in Indigenous communities with those in non-Indigenous communities located in rural regions in the province of Québec. Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study using data from the Center Antipoison du Québec (CAPQ) over a 2-year period (2016-2017). We evaluated the care trajectory of Indigenous patients suffering of poisoning as compared to non-Indigenous patients living in rural areas. Our primary outcome was the duration of CAPQ involvement in case management. Our secondary outcome was the symptoms severity at the end of case management. Results: Among 491 identified poisoned patients (238 Indigenous/253 non-Indigenous), the duration of CAPQ involvement in case management was 9.4 h [2.9-21.3] for Indigenous patients versus 5.5 h [0.1-14.4] for non-Indigenous patients. No statistically significant difference was found between groups (geometric means ratio (GMR) adjusted = 1.08; [0.84; 1.38]). Results were consistent by age and sex groups. Most patients, in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, showed mild to moderate symptoms at follow-up (59% vs 54%). One death was registered in each group. The CAPQ received a limited number of calls from the non-conventioned First Nations during the study period. Conclusions: We did not observe differences on the duration in case management. Perceptions of suboptimal care provided to rural Indigenous population are likely to be related to geographical remoteness rather than ethnicity. Further research is needed to better identify potential factors involved in the continuity of care provided in emergency situations. In this study, we carried out seven distinct and independent rounds of correspondence tests to detect discriminatory behavior in domains and markets in France that have not previously been subjected to much investigation in the literature. The study areas included: purchasing a used car; purchasing an auto insurance policy; applying for a car loan; purchasing supplemental health insurance; enrolling in an adult training program; purchasing an existing small business; and renting vacation accommodations. Access to these items and services are associated with either potential pathways to a middle-class job or hallmarks of a middle-class living standard. We seek to discern evidence of discriminatory behavior according to the criteria of age, gender, ethnic origin, and the reputation of the neighborhood of residence (advantaged or disadvantaged). We discern statistically significant patterns in our observed statistical outcome (callback rates) in all seven markets, which we interpret as possibly indicative of discriminatory behavior; however, the criteria, the magnitudes, and the signs differ from one market to another. One finding is that differential treatment based on ethnicity and the reputation of the neighborhood (i.e., neutral or disadvantaged) might not be as systematic and mutually reinforcing as they are frequently perceived to be in the domains of labor and housing markets.

Summary: Background: Overweight and obesity are serious risk factors associated with major health problems such as, mortality as a result of ischemic heart diseases, cerebro vascular attacks (CVA) and diabetes. Previous cross-sectional research reveals the “Mediterranean diet” paradox among native Arab Israelis: despite the fact that this diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, high fiber and low fat diet originated in the Mediterranean basin, Israeli Arabs exhibit a high prevalence of obesity and concurrent elevated mortality rates. Yet, referring to the few obesity studies conducted among Arab-Israeli populations, none used a panel data-set. The Israeli longtitudinal survey was primarily conducted by the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (ICBS) at the national level beginning in 2012. This was part of the new statistical requirements from the Organization of Cooperation and Economic Development (OECD), which Israel joined as member in 2010. Objective: To fill this lacuna, namely, lack of any previous longitudinal study in Israel at the national level. The panel structure of our study, covering 2012–2016, permits the BMI between-group comparison (as an overweight and obesity measure) of native Jewish and Arab Israelis females and males (the two main ethnic groups in Israel), while controlling the age variable within the same group. We track the same individuals over time and observe the variations of their BMI. Sample: The sample employed in this study is representative of the Israeli population. The information was collected by personal interviews. The sample contains 24,685 observations × years of native Israelis, and is divided to 16,538 native Jewish Hebrew speakers × years (67% of the sample); and 8147 native non-Jewish Arabic speakers × years (33% of the sample). Results: Between-group comparison: when age is controlled, compared to native Jewish Israeli women, native Jewish Israeli men and Arab Israeli women cross the overweight benchmark (i.e., BMI≥25 – according to the World Health Organization classification) 20 years earlier. Results: Within-group comparison: while during this five-year period, native Arab Israeli women gain weight at an increasing pace, there is a decrease in the weight gain among native Jewish Israeli women, and starting from 2014 – there is an actual weight loss. Interestingly, during the sample period, both native Arab Israelis and Jewish Israeli men gained weight at an increasing pace. Conclusions: These outcomes may demonstrate the higher medical literacy of native Jewish Israeli women (i.e., better awareness to high fiber diets and physical activity), and may stress the need to increase this public awareness, particularly among native Jewish Israeli men and both Arab Israeli men and women.

This study investigated (1) ethnic group differences in body dissatisfaction (BD) among specific Latina subgroups, (2) acculturative stress as a mediator between ethnic group and BD, and (3) ethnic identification as a moderator between 3a) ethnic group and BD and 3b) acculturative stress and BD. Mexican (n = 30), Puerto Rican (n = 31), Cuban (n = 29), and non-Hispanic, White (n = 30) women in the US completed self-report questionnaires. Group comparisons indicated Mexicans reported greater BD compared to Whites, while Puerto Ricans and Cubans did not differ from Whites. A significant indirect effect indicated that acculturative stress mediated the association between ethnic group and BD. Acculturative stress predicted BD at low and average levels of ethnic identification. Additionally, there were significant differences comparing Cubans to Mexicans and Puerto Ricans, which were dependent on ethnic identification. Thus, higher ethnic identification may serve as a protective factor for Cubans. Findings support separating subgroups of Latinas and that higher ethnic identification may protect against the development of BD in Latinas experiencing acculturative stress. Assessments and interventions should address acculturative stress since higher levels were associated with higher levels of BD, and the combination of ethnic group, acculturative stress, and ethnic identification may help explain differences in BD among Latinas. • Acculturative stress is a mediator between ethnic group and body dissatisfaction. • Differences in body dissatisfaction were found among Latina ethnic subgroups. • Ethnic identity is protective for some Latina ethnic subgroups but not others. • Addressing acculturative stress may decrease body dissatisfaction. The relevance of the work is determined, first of all, by a new perspective on the speech variability analysis depending on the influence of selected extralingual factors: gender, ethnicity, social status and age, which, of course, corresponds to the current state of the linguistic development and growing interest in disclosure of the influence of social factors on the functioning of language in different territories, as well as the application of an ecolinguistic approach to the analysis of Pittsburgh dialect sociolinguistic differentiation. Second, our study is quite interesting in response about the sociocultural role importance of the Pittsburgh dialect (object of study) in the overall linguistic picture of the United States of America. The language behaviour of Pittsburgh residents is due to the influence of non-linguistic factors (gender, ethnicity, social status of speakers and age). The functioning of speech in this area, the implementation of phonetic processes and lexical units in communication directly depends on the social impact on speech. The novelty of the study is that for the first time on the material of the modern Pittsburgh dialect the regularities of variation of language mean of phonetic and lexical levels from the point of view of ecolinguistic approach to studying sociolinguistic differentiation of speech of Pittsburgh dialects speakers are determined. Introduction and objectives: Little is known about primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in non-whites. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical features and outcomes of PBC in a highly admixed population. Material and methods: The Brazilian Cholestasis Study Group multicentre database was reviewed to assess demographics, clinical features and treatment outcomes of Brazilian patients with PBC. Results: 562 patients (95% females, mean age 51 § 11 years) with PBC were included. Concurrent autoimmune diseases and overlap with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) occurred, respectively, in 18.9% and 14%. After a mean follow-up was 6.2 § 5.3 years, 32% had cirrhosis, 7% underwent liver transplantation and 3% died of liver-related causes. 96% were treated with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and 12% required add-on therapy with fibrates, either bezafibrate, fenofibrate or ciprofibrate. Response to UDCA and to UDCA/fibrates therapy varied from 39%-67% and 42-61%, respectively, according to different validated criteria. Advanced histological stages and non-adherence to treatment were associated with primary non-response to UDCA, while lower baseline alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels correlated with better responses to both UDCA and UDCA/fibrates. Conclusions: Clinical features of PBC in highly admixed Brazilians were similar to those reported in Caucasians and Asians, but with inferior rates of overlap syndrome with AIH. Response to UDCA was lower than expected and inversely associated with histological stage and baseline AST and ALP levels. Most of patients benefited from add-on fibrates, including ciprofibrate. This paper, for the first time, considers the Mariupol period of D.V. Ainalov’s life, as well as the history of his family and his ancestry from the Crimean-Azov Greeks. D.V. Ainalov’s personal documents concerning his family tree and the early period of his life were introduced into scientific circulation. His research focus (Hellenistic and Byzantine art) was determined by the inherent bond with the Greek culture, which had survived and flourished among the Azov Greeks. With the help of the archival documents, the atmosphere in D.V. Ainalov’s family was revealed in order to understand the conditions under which he developed his artistic abilities. Our findings confirm that the inner circle of D.V. Ainalov’s family, which included artists, prompted him to visual thinking and, therefore, played a key role in his subsequent interest in the study of art. An important evidence of D.V. Ainalov’s artistic abilities is his iconographic legacy. Refining the details of D.V. Ainalov’s biography helps to get a better insight into his creative “laboratory” and personal motives, thereby adding new dimensions to his historiographical image. The paper raises the issue of the urgent need for a special monographic research summarizing and covering in detail all stages of personal and creative biography of D.V. Ainalov.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to determine fetal nuchal translucency (NT) thickness nomogram values in first trimester in a Turkish population and compare them with previously reported European and Asian nomogram data. Material and methods: Ultrasonographic measurements of crown-rump length (CRL) and NT thicknesses were obtained from 11 to 14 weeks of gestation in a normal Turkish population. Pregnant women with singleton pregnancy and fetal CRL between 45 and 84 mm were included in the study. The mean 1st, 3rd, 5th, 50th, 90th, 95th, 97th, and 99th percentiles and fixed cut off values of ≥ 2.5 mm, ≥ 3 mm, ≥ 3.5 mm NT thicknesses for a CRL between 45 and 84 mm were determined. Results: A total of 1605 healthy fetuses were enrolled in the study. The sonographic measurements were performed on 1541 (%94) fetuses transabdominally and on 99 cases (%4) by the transvaginal route. The mean NT thickness for CRL between 45 and 84 mm was 1.57 ± 074 mm, and the mean 95th, 97th, and 99th percentiles of these values were 2.82 mm, 3.17, and 4.75 mm, respectively. The incidence of NT thicknesses at fixed points of ≥ 2.5 mm, ≥ 3 mm, and ≥ 3.5 mm in normal fetuses were 6.7%, 4.1%, and 2.1%, respectively. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated the nomogram data of fetal NT thickness in a Turkish population. We think that this report will be useful for further research related to NT thickness values on the prenatal diagnosis for the first trimester chromosomal abnormalities in Turkish populations. The treatment of major burns in toddlers is a serious challenge, even for the best physicians. Children's delicate organism decompensates fast and even a small delay or slight mistake in therapy can lead to fatal consequences. The aim of this study is to create a profile for children at risk through a retrospective analysis of ethnic origin, citizenship, lone parent families and age of parent. Demographics, profile of the parent raising the child, burn size, and location of the incident were also recorded. A total of 100 children of both genders, no older than 36 months and treated in the clinic between 2012 and 2019 were included in the analysis. All had burns above 10% and were treated in the intensive care unit: 43% of the children were raised by single mothers, 57% by both parents; 27% of the mothers were minors; 58% were from distant non-urbanised regions; 39% were Bulgarian, 9% Bulgarian-Muslim and 50% gypsies. For 57% of the cases, burn had happened in the kitchen, for 26% in the bathroom and for 17% in other parts of the home. Children at risk come from poor and distant regions, and the suburbs of urban areas. They mostly have lone parents with bad social status and low educational level. That is why lowering the level of household burns is a very hard task. A well-structured national program to educate young parents and parents raising toddlers, and control household conditions is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are clear differences in labour force participation rates of women of immigrant origins, both first and second generation, across a range of European countries. Many of these differences, particularly for women with low participation rates, are not fully explained in existing studies. I argue that to better understand differences in labour force participation, and the role of 'culture' in shaping them, we need to take account of the context provided by previous generations of women. While mothers may transmit expectations regarding participation directly to their daughters through intergenerational transmission and childhood socialisation, mothers-in-law may also be important in indirectly influencing their daughters-in-law through their sons' behaviours and attitudes. Using the UK large-scale household panel study Understanding Society, the contribution of this paper is to investigate the 'mother-in-law effect' in the UK. I shed light on the extent to which partnered women's participation is affected by the work status of their partner's mother. I find a positive association between a working mother-in-law and female labour force participation, which remains sizeable after accounting for individual-level characteristics. I also show that Pakistani and Bangladeshi women's participation is more sensitive to the work status of their mothers-in-law than that of other groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5α‐Reductase type 2 deficiency causes a 46,XY disorder of sex development (DSD) characterized by ambiguous external genitalia, rudimentary prostate, and normal internal genitalia. The disease prevalence worldwide is low, but in a small and isolated village of the Venezuelan Andes, a higher incidence has been found. DNA analysis of the SRD5A2 gene was performed in three inbred affected individuals clinically diagnosed with DSD. The entire coding regions, the p.L89V polymorphism (rs523349) and five intragenic SNPs (rs2300702, rs2268797, rs2268796, rs4952220, rs12470196) used to construct haplotypes were analyzed by Sanger sequencing. To assess the probable ethnic origin of the mutation in this geographic isolate, a population structure analysis was performed. Homozygosis for the p.N193S mutation was found in all patients, with a mutation carrier frequency of 1:80 chromosomes (0.0125) in the geographic focus, suggesting a founder phenomenon. The results of the population structure analysis suggested a mutation origin closer to the Spanish populations, according to the clusters grouping. The genotype–phenotype correlation in the patients was not absolute, being hypospadias and cryptorchidism the main traits that differentiate affected individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of hormone therapy (HT) on the oncological outcomes of endometrial cancer (EC) survivors. A systematic literature review was conducted in July 2021 to identify studies detailing the effect size for the relationship between HT use in EC and oncological outcomes (survival and disease recurrence). This included studies that evaluated the different recurrence rates among women treated for EC who subsequently underwent HT and those who did not. The collected studies were evaluated for quality, heterogeneity, and publication bias, and a pooled odds ratio (OR) or hazard ratio (HR) was calculated with a confidence interval of 95% (95% CI). In total, 5291 studies were collated, and after the review process, one randomized trial and seven observational studies were included, comprising 1801 EC survivors treated with HT and 6015 controls. The time-dependent analysis could be conducted for four studies, and considering the disease-free survival, the pooled HR of 0.90 (95% CI 0.28 to 2.87) showed no significant differences. However, among Black American women treated with continuous estrogen HT, the HR was 7.58 (95% CI 1.96 to 29.31), showing a significantly increased risk of recurrence for women in this ethnic group. Considering the pooled OR of all included studies 0.63 (95% CI 0.48 to 0.83), a significantly reduced risk of recurrence was found among EC survivors treated with HT. Considering the type of HT, the most risk-reducing was combined estrogen and progestin therapy and the cyclic regimen. Although supporting evidence is based mainly upon observational studies, evidence of no increased risk or even decreased risk was generally found, apart from in Black American women where a significantly increased recurrence risk was evident. The data are rather reassuring for the short-term administration of HT to symptomatic EC survivors. Future studies with a longer follow-up are necessary to better clarify the long-term effects of HT.

Background: Ethnic differences in the timing of human tooth development are unclear. Aim: To describe similarities and differences in the timing of tooth formation in two groups of Sudanese children and young adults. Subjects and methods: The sample consisted of healthy individuals from Khartoum, Sudan, aged 2–23 years. The Northern group was of Arab origin (848 males, 802 females) and the Western group was of African origin (846 males, 402 females). Each mandibular left permanent tooth from first incisor to third molar was assessed from dental radiographs into one of 15 development stages. Mean ages at entry for 306 tooth stages were calculated using probit regression in males/females in each group and compared using a t-test. Results: Mean ages were not significantly different in most tooth stage comparisons between ethnic groups for both males (61/75) and females (56/76), despite a tendency of earlier mean ages in the Western group. Mean ages for most tooth stage comparisons between males and females (137/155) were not significantly different within ethnic groups suggesting low sexual dimorphism. Conclusion: The mean ages of most mandibular tooth formation stages were generally not significantly different between ethnic groups or between males and females in this study.

At the height of the Education 2030 agenda, and under the fourth objective of the post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals, an analysis and a current balance of the problems that affect the educational systems of the Latin American region are necessary. These tools would serve the countries as a starting point to establish specific action plans that will address the shortcomings detected with the ultimate goal of promoting the successful achievement of the objectives proposed in the Agenda. In order to do this, we will use the comparative method in education. Taking the countries that make up Latin America as comparison units, and beginning with, among others, variables such as school retardment, enrolment rate or illiteracy rate, we will compare whose results point to the inability of educational systems to mitigate or reverse social background inequalities. The immigration motivation hypothesis stresses the different inclinations of new immigrants to settle permanently in the host country. The group of reactive immigrants, who lack the real option to emigrate back to their country of origin, assign high priority to buying a home. In contrast, the proactive group of immigrants tends to postpone the purchase decision. We test this hypothesis based on the 2010 Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics absorption survey of new immigrants. The findings indicate a better assimilation effect among the proactive Former-Soviet Union (FSU) immigration compared with reactive Ethiopian immigration, and may be of assistance to demographers and policy planners. This article initially accounts for the discussions concerning the notions ‘ethnic origin’ and ‘race’ that have taken place in the Swedish legislative context and places these within a wider European context. Next follows a mapping of the ways in which Swedish courts, in cases of alleged ethnic discrimination, read the notion of ‘ethnic affiliation’ – defined as ‘national or ethnic origin, skin colour, or other similar circumstance’ – and decide whether a statement or an act is related to it. The purpose, to borrow Michel Foucault’s words, is to ‘make visible precisely what is visible’. By bringing together, arranging and connecting what the courts have said about ‘ethnic affiliation’, the conclusions they have reached and the circumstances that they have ignored, three observations are made: (a) ethnic affiliation is treated as an authentic and stable personal individual attribute, (b) ethnic affiliation is seen as a question about body types and bloodlines solely and (c) discriminatory acts are connected to ‘ethnic affiliation’ only if related to visual appearance or accompanied by ‘incriminating words’. The article discusses and analyzes the significance and implications of these observations in engagement with theorists such as Barnor Hesse and David Theo Goldberg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevalence of ischaemic heart disease with associated cardiomegaly and other chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus has increased in Malaysia in recent years. As the contribution to mortality from ischaemic heart disease/cardiomegaly in different ethnic populations is unclear, a three year (January 2013–December 2015) retrospective study of autopsy cases was undertaken at the Department of Forensic Pathology, University Malaya Medical Centre. There were 80 cases with lethal ischaemic heart diseases/cardiomegaly. The age range was 30–69 years (mean 50.19 years) with a male to female ratio of 39:01. The most vulnerable age was 50–59 years accounting for 38.75% of cases. Malays accounted for 15% of cases, Indians for 32.5% and Chinese for 36.25%. Although in 35 cases (43.75%) there was a history suggestive of ischaemic heart disease, the remaining 45 cases (56.25%) were apparently healthy until the terminal collapse. It appears that Indian males in the 50–59 year age range are most at risk for lethal cardiac events in this population, most often with no preceding symptoms or signs.
