Sara Ahmed addresses the construction of collectives through the circulation of affects. With this in mind, and given the gentrification threatening various regions, the discourse emerging from localism and, more specifically, from neighborhoods could be considered counter-hegemonic. After all, it concerns a reality that affects the identity of the people who inhabit these spaces and, in turn, their conception of the world and work, especially manual and artisanal labor. Therefore, the main objective of this text is to ideologically analyze the discourse of the San Julián neighborhood's artisan association in Seville; an association of women who champion the neighborhood's sounds and defend the identity of its people, despite the gentrification affecting their area. To this end, a focus group was conducted with the artisans of Recoveco Market who are in charge of the association's communication. This revealed aspects such as the circulation of affects among them and towards the neighborhood in which they live, as well as their conception of feminism and how it influences their shared reality. El objetivo de esta investigación es explorar y organizar la bibliografía de estudios urbanos sobre el rendimiento urbano y los principales indicadores que se utilizan. Se analiza una muestra de 47 artículos recogidos en la base de datos Scopus que se refieren a estudios urbanos, de gestión y planificación urbana. Este artículo proporciona una guía para académicos y profesionales que muestra los principales indicadores utilizados para medir el rendimiento urbano de los principales enfoques de los estudios urbanos (socioeconómico y demográfico; medioambiental; ciudades inteligentes; diseño urbano, entorno construido y territorio; administración pública, gobierno y gobernanza; eficiencia energética; sostenibilidad y desarrollo sostenible; transporte y movilidad; evaluación comparativa; y ciudades globales). Las aportaciones sociales y de gestión de este documento residen precisamente en la síntesis que ofrece de los indicadores de rendimiento urbano, que pueden ser útiles para que mejoren las investigaciones académicas, así como para que quienes planifican y gestionan el urbanismo trabajen de forma más eficiente con las políticas urbanas y mejoren así el rendimiento urbano deseado.

Este trabajo examina el papel del método comparativo en la investigación urbana, prestando atención a su utilidad en la generación de teoría, y a las particularidades de las comparaciones entre ciudades de distintas regiones. Para ello, se realiza una revisión de la literatura al respecto y se propone un agrupamiento en líneas temáticas que, sin la intención de ser muy rígido, contribuye a identificar las características de estos estudios. También se presentan reflexiones que emergen de la revisión de los estudios comparativos de una de las autoras del artículo, y de su lectura en paralelo con investigaciones más recientes que incorporan dicho método. Las conclusiones señalan algunos rasgos relevantes que influyen en las características de los estudios comparativos y sugieren que éstos seguirán siendo pertinentes en la investigación urbana mientras eviten visiones deterministas o esencialistas sobre las ciudades.

Esta investigación pretende contribuir a debates que incluyan manifestaciones de violencia social armada y el papel de actores no convencionales, como la agencia local (de abajo hacia arriba), en sus prácticas cotidianas de resiliencia y transmutación de conflictos. Como alternativa a la agenda vertical de promoción de la paz, examinamos el caso del Instituto Favela da Paz, un proyecto concebido y coordinado por vecinos del lugar que tiene como objetivo establecer, en múltiples frentes de acción, una comunidad sostenible guiada por una cultura de paz en el barrio Jardim Ângela, considerado por la ONU en la década de 1990 como uno de los barrios más peligrosos del mundo. Partimos de la premisa de que los debates que reflejan la violencia más allá de los contornos inmediatos del Estado siguen siendo limitados en las literaturas de paz convencionales y, sin embargo, merecen una mayor atención. A partir de investigaciones realizadas mediante la triangulación de datos oficiales, entrevistas y literatura especializada, se observó que las prácticas del Instituto Favela da Paz convergen intuitivamente con el enfoque de Formación de Paz de Oliver P. Richmond, al emancipar a los actores locales, conectados en redes transversales y transnacionales, en la promoción de la paz en sus propios términos.

Local climate policy in Germany is embedded in a complex and dense multilevel system. While higher levels of governance confront cities with legal frameworks and regulations, they are not constrained to mere implementation of requirements from the national or supranational levels. Cities can influence and make strategic use of opportunities stemming from the multilevel structure to introduce innovative climate policy measures as best practices. Within a multilevel structure, they can engage in trans‐local action and become actors in various processes of upscaling. In this paper, we analyze the configurations of success for local climate innovations. We focus on the impact of cities' trans‐local and strategic activities within the European multilevel system in conjunction with city‐specific context conditions. The research is based on a concept‐structural framework that combines trans‐local activities and internal context conditions in a way that accounts for interactions between the two spheres. A comparison of the German cities of Darmstadt, Hagen, Offenbach, and Oldenburg indicates that configurations of strategic action in the multilevel system and beneficial local conditions explain the adoption of climate innovations. Therefore, such trans‐local action should not be understood as a sufficient condition of innovative climate policy measures, but as an enabling factor embedded in local contexts. The complex relationship between local climate action and reducing global emissions is often difficult to grasp and cities might scale back their ambitions if they realize that the way is hard and rocky. We analyze local climate change narratives through the lens of the narrative policy framework (NPF). Following the NPF, policy actors use narratives to communicate information to change an existing system in order to achieve a specific goal. For our study, this implies that local climate action can be improved by using narratives to communicate information to achieve climate neutrality. We focus on the position and interplay of the most important and dominant actors and concepts in the plot of the narratives. To better analyze the main actors and content of the NPF plot in a systematic and comparable way, we offer the "narrative rate index" to dynamically trace the narratives. To include the dynamics and effects of global significant developments in the plots of the NPF narratives, we selected three phases between January 2018 and June 2021. What are the main characters and dominant actors in the plot of the narratives in the two cases? Are the narratives different depending on the context of the city, and are there general observable patterns? Our findings identify the central actors in the narratives of both cities: the science institute in Karlsruhe and the City Administration in Mannheim. Karlsruhe, a climate change pioneer, has slowed down its climate change activities somewhat, while Mannheim is a latecomer with high ambitions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sub‐national governments are a crucial non‐state actor for mitigating climate change. This importance has recently strengthened as increasing numbers of municipalities declare net‐zero carbon emission goals to support the Paris Agreement, often well ahead of national governments. In Japan, net‐zero declarations have also diffused widely, with nearly 800 declarations appearing in domino‐like fashion over 2019–2022. To elucidate the factors that propelled this rapid diffusion, we used an event‐history analysis based on data from a survey to develop an integrated statistical model. We then deepen understanding of diffusion mechanisms through seven brief case studies informed by interviews and document analysis. We find that the drivers of policy diffusion varied over time. During the early stage, internal factors drove the spread of declarations; namely participation in transnational city networks, endowed human and financial resources, and political leadership. But in later stages, diffusion was mostly propelled by external factors; namely declarations by neighboring cities and the affiliated prefectural government. Through these findings, we contribute to scholarship through two novel perspectives. First, we reveal the factors driving policy diffusion across both early adopters and the ordinary majority. Local governments have led the way on climate action in the United States. While the federal government has largely stood to the side, local governments have made great efforts to adopt policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A large and robust literature in urban politics has explored the variables that influence local government action on climate change in the United States. Issue severity and resident ideological preferences have been identified as two of the most important factors in local climate action. Governments that are more likely to face major impacts from climate, such as coastal communities, and governments serving more liberal residents have both been found to pursue climate policy at higher rates. In this paper we suggest that these relationships are better understood as conditional. We argue that the effect of issue severity will be moderated by ideology. When residents are liberal, issue severity will matter. When residents are conservative, the impact will be muted. We find strong evidence for this hypothesis. Coastal governments and governments that have experienced drought adopt more climate policies, but this is conditional on the ideology of residents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

La aparición hace poco más de 10 años de diversas plataformas que permitían la gestión de alojamientos entre particulares supuso una revolución en el sector turístico. Los alojamientos turísticos han sufrido profundas transformaciones que han venido para quedarse. En los últimos años han surgido plataformas como Airbnb que han transformado la forma de gestionar alojamientos alternativos entre particulares. En un principio, estas plataformas se consideraban un ejemplo de la "economía colaborativa" que sitúan la dimensión social en una posición central en la economía. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, cada vez más agencias profesionales de gestión inmobiliaria también han comenzado a anunciar sus propiedades en la plataforma, poniendo así en cuestión el ideal original de consumo colaborativo entre iguales, así como noción complementaria al concepto de economía social. En este estudio analizamos el nivel de profesionalización de la oferta de Airbnb en 10 ciudades y regiones españolas, con el objetivo de ver si se cumplen o no los principios de la economía colaborativa. En particular, estudiamos cómo se estructura el sector que, en Airbnb, varía entre agentes profesionalizados con múltiples anuncios y propietarios privados de un único anuncio. Además, tenemos como objetivo medir si el efecto de la pandemia del COVID-19 ha afectado a esta estructura, si ha generado respuestas diferentes entre los agentes altamente profesionalizados o entre los propietarios privados de un único anuncio en Airbnb. Este trabajo también presenta un estudio en profundidad del caso de Madrid en el periodo 2016-2020.

This article contributes to the burgeoning dialogue in Black geographies by adding a focus on transport. Because there is no singular, all-encompassing framework for Black geographies, this article draws on a long history of Blackness and Whiteness in the discipline of geography and beyond. It contextualizes the contemporary conversation within critical reflections from feminist, indigenous, and queer as well as decolonial and postcolonial studies. These wider considerations are especially important for geography, a discipline historically detached from efforts to deracialize the city. The article then refines its focus on Blackness and transport by reflecting on race and mobility in South African cities. The empirical focus for these deliberations is Johannesburg, where transport has historically been used as a tool for discrimination and control, and in the postapartheid context, transport provides unbridled opportunities for social and spatial integration. Three frameworks for exploring Black transport geographies are then introduced: the policies and laws that control movement, community action and protest against racist transport, and the emergence of informal transport systems. The aim of this article, however, is not to promote a particular approach for bringing transport into conversation with Black geographies, but rather to provide a rigorous reflection that is not only analytically productive but practically useful. Proper knowledge of the spatial distribution of the different urban land uses is essential for their planning and management, and for that purpose, information sources with a high level of detail are required. In this context, the Cadastral Classifier (CC) plugin has been developed for QGIS. It analyzes the cadastral information to produce urban land use classifications with different level of detail. CC allows to perform three types of classifications, from a basic one with 6 uses and an intermediate one with 14, that include mixed uses, to an advanced one, with as many uses as the user defines. To validate its performance, the resulting classification of a municipality in the Madrid Region was analyzed to compare it with cadastral information and fieldwork. It is observed that there is a high degree of fidelity to reality, except for green areas, which require additional information sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Los cambios que se presentan en la sociedad contemporánea manifiestan la complejidad de sus construcciones, reflejadas en los diferentes riesgos, consecuencia de las acciones humanas y el manejo de los recursos naturales, es por ello, que el objetivo del artículo es analizar la teoría social del riesgo considerando la relación sociedad y territorio en el marco de los estudios urbanos. Se presenta en una discusión teórica conceptual desde el análisis crítico de diversos autores cobrando relevancia al mostrar la manera en la cual las acciones generan una transformación a través de la creación y reproducción de las situaciones que se construyen bajo los escenarios de vulnerabilidad en el territorio considerando la relación con la sociedad. Se concluye que, respecto a los fenómenos sociales y sus componentes territoriales, la relación sociedad y territorio responde a una dinámica en los condicionantes del desarrollo de la teoría social del riesgo, facilitando el entendimiento del actuar humano.

El conocimiento apropiado de la distribución espacial de los distintos tipos de usos del suelo es fundamental para su planificación y gestión, y para ello se requiere de fuentes de información de alto detalle. En este contexto se ha desarrollado el complemento Clasificador Catastral (CC) para QGIS, que tiene como finalidad el análisis de la información catastral para dar como resultado clasificaciones de uso de suelo con distinto nivel de detalle. CC permite realizar tres tipos de clasificaciones, desde una básica con 6 usos y una intermedia con 14, que incluye usos mixtos, hasta una avanzada, con tantos usos como el usuario defina. Para validar su funcionamiento se ha analizado la correspondencia de la clasificación resultante de un municipio de la Comunidad de Madrid con información catastral y trabajo de campo. Se observa que hay un alto grado de fidelidad con la realidad, a excepción de las zonas verdes, que requieren de fuentes de información adicionales.

This text presents the dossier "Urban childhood in social science: problems and methodologic challenges". It aims to situate the main questions which characterizes the works on the relation between childhood and city. In the first part, we indicate how urban studies (Seixas 2003; Harvey 2008; Fernandez Martorell 2009) and childhood studies (Balagopalan 2019; Castro Seixas 2022; Sarmento 2018) have interfaces in the analysis of some topics: the right for the city; appropriation of the public space and children participation in the city; socio-territorial inequality and childhood, and the children as political actors in the city. In the second part, we suggest a brief systematization of articles, dialoguing with Brazilian, Spanish, Argentinean, and British researchers. It points out interdisciplinarity and denouncements. We seek to collaborate in the contemporary debates about the multiple urban childhood built in different spaces in the city and in different city in the world, highlighting methodological, epistemological, and ethical challenges. El crecimiento urbano disperso en la Zona Metropolitana de Toluca (ZMT) se ha acelerado en las últimas décadas, y el ordenamiento ecológico y la planeación urbana se han visto rebasados. A la par, no se cuenta con estudios que orienten a la toma de decisiones para el aprovechamiento y el uso correcto del territorio. El objetivo de este estudio fue generar un modelo de evaluación de aptitud territorial para orientar la dirección del crecimiento urbano, a través de un análisis de capacidad de carga del territorio para un desarrollo urbano sustentable de la ZMT. Se identificaron zonas de expansión urbana de impactos en áreas con valor ecológico y ambiental, y áreas de riesgos socionaturales, con respecto al crecimiento urbano actual. Se proponen alternativas para reorientar la dirección y forma del crecimiento urbano con criterios de preservación de zonas productivas y ambientales.

Isaac Rosa’s El vano ayer (2004) is a historical metanarrative that deconstructs both literary discourse and everyday spatial constructs in order to document the perpetuation of the Francoist past in the “democratic” present. The juxtaposition of El vano ayer as a novelistic form and Isaac Rosa as a social media presence mediates, facilitates, and produces narratives and pathways through and about rhetoric and space; specifically spaces of resistance in Madrid. This article explores how El vano ayer and Isaac Rosa as a public intellectual create an itinerary of counter-hegemonic protest. This itinerary describes and then reformulates the historical consciousness realized through the lexical and the concrete, as in the streets and monuments in Madrid that contain vestiges of the Francoist government. Dispersed urban growth in the Toluca Metropolitan Area (ZMT) has accelerated in recent decades, and ecological ordering and urban planning have been exceeded. At the same time, there are no studies that guide decision-making for the correct exploitation and use of the territory. The objective of this study was to generate a territorial aptitude evaluation model to guide the direction of urban growth, through an analysis of the carrying capacity of the territory for a sustainable urban development of the ZMT. Impact urban expansion zones were identified in areas with ecological and environmental value, and socio-natural risk areas, with respect to current urban growth. Alternatives are proposed to reorient the direction and form of urban growth with criteria for the preservation of productive and environmental areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Displacement occupies an ambiguous position in contemporary geographical thought. Displacement through gentrification and regeneration has gained prominence in critical urban geography, even as critical migration, border, and citizenship studies have simultaneously produced a robust literature on transnational displacement and internally displaced persons. In response to emerging crises of global and urban order, this article adds to a consideration of displacement—as concept and methodology—through an urging of attention to three drivers common to urban, subnational, and transnational scales of displacement. Our key argument is to suggest an urgent research agenda addressing the different scales and roles of value, choice, and infrastructure, both as drivers in processes of displacement and as points of learning between subdisciplines. Collectively, our work on migration and urban restructuring shows that large-scale development and resettlement projects, labor markets, and extraordinary measures of crisis management generate new ways in which value is extracted from displaced bodies and depeopled places. Against a tendency to index displacement (in both policy and research methodology) as either voluntary or nonvoluntary, we advance a critique of the choice structure of displacement. We further call attention to the infrastructures and technologies through which displacement is moved from a temporary state of exception to an ongoing state of normality. In doing so, we call for the need to rethink the epistemology of displacement and identify the significance of cross-subdisciplinary conversations for this project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Political ecology and urban studies are fields of heterogeneous and dynamic knowledge that are difficult to delimit both due to their breadth and complexity, but also due to their folds, voids and juxtapositions. For this reason, it is necessary to contribute to the construction of an intellectual map that allows locating the contributions of the political ecology of urbanization from Latin America. In this sense, we develop a bibliographic research to identify and understand the theoretical and political-ideological convergences and divergences between these still emerging fields. For this, we carry out a content analysis that relates 30 articles from scientific journals. The results show convergences in the theoretical integration of the urbanization phenomenon into the transdisciplinary and holistic frameworks of political ecology, and divergences in the radical nature of the criticism of the capitalist system, the intellectual influences of multilateral organizations and the greater or lesser tendency to reproduce the fragmentation of the urban phenomenon. El presente artículo aborda un problema de creciente relevancia dentro de las ciencias sociales: aquel vinculado a la anatomía y los efectos de los procesos de renovación urbana. No se detiene en alguna de las muchas áreas metropolitanas de la región, sino en una ciudad intermedia: Neuquén, en la Patagonia argentina. El arco temporal privilegiado es el que corresponde al periodo 2010-2018, cuando el crecimiento en altura cobró un inusitado ímpetu. El itinerario seguido por el texto reconoce cuatro momentos. En el primero, se hace foco en la división social del espacio en la capital neuquina. En la segunda, se pasará revista de los factores que propiciaron el proceso de verticalización (urbanización del capital, economía extractiva, flexibilización normativa y transformaciones culturales). En la tercera, el texto se detendrá en el proceso de (re) densificación, poniendo énfasis en la cantidad, localización y tamaño de las torres que salpicaron la geografía de la ciudad. Por último, analizaremos los efectos sociales que el crecimiento en altura trajo consigo, partiendo del supuesto que se trató de un proceso de renovación excluyente, que reforzó el cuadro de segregación de la ciudad.

Since the novel El Periquillo Sarniento [The Itching Parrot / The Mangy Parrot] (1816) by José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi, readers have walked around Mexico City and its geography, noticing conflicts typical of life in society. However, the urban practices of people who coexist in cities have been little explored by critics. Based on Edward W. Soja's concept of the Thirdspace, this essay analyzes the processes of coexistence in the fictional universe of detective Casasola created by novelist Bernardo Esquinca and identifies the laws that define them. These rules give the representation of Mexico City a totalizing character which resembles the idea of Borges's Aleph. The study of this literary space reveals historical, social, and spatial practices and shows how Esquinca challenges readers to be cocreators of meaning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El enfoque de género es una herramienta analítica y pedagógica relevante para los estudios urbanos y socioambientales. Este documento describe las regulaciones, los avances y la inten­sidad en la integración de la perspectiva de género en tres programas de posgrado de flacso Ecuador. La investigación se basa en los niveles meso y micro curricular, incluido un análisis de los proyectos académicos, los sílabos de las materias y los trabajos de titulación de la última convocatoria. Los resultados demuestran cuatro niveles en la transversalización del enfoque de género: formal, curricular, sustantivo y desde abajo. Las asimetrías teóricas, metodológicas y formativas entre los programas proporcionan pistas para diseñar estrategias de enseñanza que sirvan para la problematización, investigación y construcción de territorios inclusivos.

This article discusses the multiple uses of the concept of intersectionality in studies focused on urban inequalities and struggles. By reviewing the literature, I intend to understand to what extent the concept of intersectionality is a useful reference point for problematizing urban inequalities, going beyond its description or diagnosis. I conclude that when applied to the analysis of cities, intersectionality faces dilemmas similar to the application of intersectional analysis in other areas of study. First, as a critical praxis, faces the risk of overvaluation of social identities. Second, as an analytical category, it is challenging to provide elements that can guide public policies. Este artículo busca analizar los cambios físicos y urbanos de la ciudad en el Perú dentro del contexto metropolitano a través de una mirada interdisciplinaria que tome en cuenta la historia y los estudios urbanos. Por ello se encuentra dividido en dos secciones: la primera realiza una radiografía de la ciudad peruana desde la Colonia, la República, pasando por el siglo XIX hasta llegar al contexto del siglo XX; la segunda sección realiza un breve balance de los estudios urbanos sobre la ciudad realizados en el Perú desde los años cincuenta hasta los primeros años de la década de los noventa a partir de distintas disciplinas de las ciencias sociales. Para ello se realizó una exhaustiva lectura bibliográfica de las producciones académicas más importantes del país, los resultados muestran que la ciudad ha cambiado dentro de su estructura urbana pasando de ser una ciudad compacta en la Colonia a una ciudad fragmentada en la época neoliberal, de la misma forma los estudios urbanos en el Perú han abordado nuevas temáticas pasando de los estudios de la vivienda y las barriadas a temas como las subculturas juveniles y las nuevas identidades urbanas.

In 2016 the city of Turin, Italy, launched the Torino Living Lab initiative. By using the urban Living Lab approach, with firms, public bodies, universities, and communities collaborating to co‐create innovation, Turin aims to encourage, attract, and foster a growing and inclusive innovation environment. This article describes the efforts that Turin has made to design the initiative and presents a structured methodology to assess its results. The expectations and objectives of the initiative's utilizers and the characteristics, impressions, habits, and behaviors of the citizens were collected before the initiative through a series of semi‐structured interviews and a survey. By comparing the obtained results with similar post‐mortem measurements, it is possible to assess the success of the initiative and evaluate its impacts. Finally, this study present interesting policy takeaways for cities wanting to implement urban Living Labs and identify best practices for their design, implementation, and management. How do blind people walk and cross the streets? This has been the guiding question, only simple at first glance, of our ethnographic study at the crossroads of Sensory Anthropology and Science and Technology Studies (STS), undertaken in the last six years in the city of Barcelona. In it we have followed different activists for the rights of people with "visual diversity" in their everyday urban displacements, and in their politicizations of urban infrastructures. Paying attention to the multiple and distributed agency that equips and dis/ables modes of moving about in the city, this question allows a description of the embodied, social, material and technical complexity that this mundane act entails. Our inquiry foregrounds two main elements: (a) the description of the sensory practices unfolded in blind walks; and (b) the description and close examination of the role played by non-human actors -- animals and technologies -- which constitute the "equipment" to walk as a blind person. Deepening urban anthropology's material and embodied turn to the understanding of the circumstances of pedestrians, the present work wishes to highlight the relevance of considering pedestrian assemblages and the techno-sensory practices enabling particular types of displacements. A description around assemblages allows us to unfold a description of the city not as a place for the indifferent encounter of abled subjects, but as a complex ecology of supports and accompaniments to host bodily diversity. El documento es resultado de la investigación de imaginarios sobre planificación urbana en el oriente de Cali donde aparecen los asentamientos informales como Samanes del Cauca, una zona que fue construida hace más de 30 años sobre el dique de protección contra inundaciones del Río Cauca, conocido como Jarillón del río Cauca en el oriente de Cali. El poblamiento de todo el dique se extiende a lo largo de la ciudad y tiene una diversidad en sus 26 kilómetros de largo, donde destaca Samanes como espacio rururbano que se caracteriza por el uso rural del suelo a pesar de que están en el borde de lo urbano. El objetivo es mostrar la distancia que existe entre la planificación y ordenamiento urbano que se lleva a cabo desde los entes gubernamentales frente a las percepciones, significados, experiencias y usos del territorio que tienen los habitantes de Samanes. La metodología fue de tipo cualitativa e incorporó técnicas como entrevistas semiestructuradas, observación participante y revisión documental, las cuales permiten describir las características del territorio, de quienes lo habitan y la manera en que se ha construido una zona rururbana en el oriente de Cali, que hoy atraviesa conflictos a causa del reasentamiento de las familias.

En este artículo se describe un proyecto de experimentación artística y de investigación académica que se plantea como una resistencia frente a los modos hegemónicos de producir conocimiento, y que establece una metodología de investigación transdisciplinar de articulación entre las artes y las ciencias sociales para el estudio y la producción de sentido en el espacio urbano. Esta metodología pretende englobar dentro de una práctica artística el estudio del espacio urbano, así como el acto de habitarlo y transformarlo en relación con la dimensión subjetivo-afectiva del ciudadano y los imaginarios culturales. Por medio del caminar y sus trayectos se sitúa la ciudad y se modifica por la misma técnica que la construyó: el acto de reapropiarse de la ciudad consiste en refundarla física e imaginariamente. De allí surge el concepto de psicofagias urbanas que alude específicamente a un devorar y digerir implicado, corporeizado, que devenga emocional y psicogeográfico.

En el presente artículo se emplea un marco teórico que aplica el concepto Umwelt propuesto por el biólogo Jacob von Uexküll, junto al de Pathosformel del historiador Aby Warburg, de quien proviene también la idea de “imagen superviviente”, a través de Georges Didi-Huberman. Esta idea se transforma aquí en “sonoridad superviviente” a partir de los estudios sonoros como posibilidad metodológica. La ciudad se convierte en Umwelt (“mundo vivido”), habitada por Pathosformel (“fórmulas de pathos”), las cuales se manifiestan en “sonoridades supervivientes” que pueden reconocerse como Ethnoepistemes, en este caso, manifiestas en imaginarios estéticos y epistémicos occidentales, acerca de un “saber otro” del pueblo bribri-cabécar, comunidad indígena superviviente en Costa Rica.

Los problemas urbanos que actualmente afronta la Gran Área Metropolitana (GAM) de Costa Rica son producto de trayectorias históricas que han fortalecido las desigualdades espaciales de su población en ámbitos como el acceso a la vivienda, las opciones de transporte, la seguridad, el trabajo y el ocio. Aunque los estudios urbanos costarricenses han sido prolíficos a lo largo de los años, su también característica dispersión ha dificultado realizar el análisis de los factores políticos, sociales, culturales y económicos que han condicionado el desarrollo urbano de la GAM en el largo plazo y sus efectos en las zonas rurales del país. De ahí que la convocatoria a las I Jornadas de Estudios Urbanos de la Universidad de Costa Rica se realizó con el fin de acercar a los investigadores, colectivos urbanos y los encargados de tomar de decisiones a debatir sobre los enfoques que caracterizan la actual corriente de estudios urbanos. El presente ensayo tiene como propósito recopilar los resultados de las distintas mesas de discusión y actividades complementarias que se realizaron entre el 17 y el 21 de junio del 2019, así como proponer algunas guías que lleven a la realización de futuras actividades de esta índole y el establecimiento de una red de estudios urbanos a nivel centroamericano.

¿Por qué es primordial, en un mundo de múltiples, complementarias y a veces divergentes significaciones, la concepción de “contexto urbano”? Aquel constituye el cuestionamiento central de este artículo que revisa las sucesivas definiciones de dicho concepto, emanadas de publicaciones científicas asociadas a disciplinas como arquitectura, estudios urbanos, entre otros.Se propone una metodología basada en un análisis bibliométrico para examinar la presencia conceptual del contexto en las investigaciones de entre 1977 y 2017. Se constata que la utilización del vocablo, de uso frecuente, ha terminado por oscurecer el potencial de este término. Los resultados sugieren, además, que el contexto urbano ha sido empleado en la producción científica atendiendo a las realidades particulares de cada país, sin llegar a un acuerdo en sus variables. Además, se ha aplicado sin definir esas realidades particulares.

The partisanship of a policy maker is often noted as correlated with a state government's support for social welfare. However, less attention has been paid to how a governor is able to steer the budget in a manner that reflects her political views. This study assesses how changes in the economy and level of budgetary authority of the governor can jointly condition the effect of a governor's partisanship on the change in social welfare spending. Using the panel data for 49 U.S. states from 1987 to 2014, we examine whether budgetary authority allows governors to respond to an economic contraction in the expected partisan manner. Using a three‐way interaction model, we found that Democratic governors are more likely to increase social welfare funding when the economy contracts, particularly when she has high budgetary authority relative to non‐Democratic counterparts. This article uses a theoretical framework that applies the umwelt concept proposed by the biologist Jacob von uexküll, along with that of the historian Aby Warburg's pathosformel, from whom the idea of "surviving image" also comes, through Georges Didi-Huberman. This idea is transformed here into "surviving sonorities," from sound studies as a methodological possibility. The city becomes umwelt ("lived world"), inhabited by pathosformel ("pathos formulas"), which are manifested in "surviving sounds" that can be recognized as ethnoepistemes, in this case, manifest in Western aesthetic and epistemic imaginary about an "other-knowledge" of the Bribri-Cabécar people, a surviving indigenous community in Costa Rica. This article describes an artistic experimentation and research project that is an act of resistance in the face of hegemonic ways of producing knowledge. It involves a transdisciplinary research methodology of coordination between the arts and the social sciences for the study and production of meaning in urban space. This methodology aims to encompass, within an artistic practice, the study of urban space, as well as the act of inhabiting and transforming it in relation to the subjective-affective dimension of the citizen and cultural imaginaries. Walking through its routes, the city is situated and modified by the same technique that built it: The act of re-appropriating the city consists of physically and imaginatively re-founding it. Thus, the concept of urban psycho-phagy specifically alludes to a participatory, embodied devouring and digesting, that becomes emotional and psycho-geographic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extent to which municipal policy is determined by the preferences of residents is a topic of growing importance. Recent work on the subject has challenged conventional wisdom and found that municipal policy is often, but not always, responsive to the ideology of residents. This paper takes up an important potential implication of these findings, exploring how resident ideology may interact with issue severity in the adoption of municipal policy. Hypotheses suggest that resident preferences will have the greatest effect in the presence of high issue severity and that issue severity will have the largest impact when residents have ideological preferences in line with policy solutions. I test hypotheses using municipal water rates, with models showing that the effects of resident ideology and water scarcity interact with each other to influence water conservation policy. As a critique of 'Euro-American realism', this paper draws on science–technology studies (STS) and actor–network theory (ANT) and its understanding of the social as multiple orderings of heterogeneous things that are not given but are enacted in daily practices. The STS–ANT perspective enables an exploration to be made of the multiple spaces of a place in action, deepening understandings of the notions of the quality of a place, ambience, network space, fluid space and urbanity–disurbanity. This approach is explored in relation to the material reality of Pires de Almeida Street, located in Laranjeiras neighbourhood in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, examining for this zone associations of, and tensions between, humans and non-humans and their ways of 'being present'.
