Abstract

To minimize the sediment flowing to the outlet of a river catchment with minimal effort or cost, it is important to select the best areas to perform a certain intervention, e.g., afforestation. CAMF (Cellular Automata based heuristic for Minimizing Flow) is a method that performs this selection process iteratively in a raster geodatabase environment. To simulate the flow paths, the original CAMF uses a Single Flow Direction (SFD) algorithm. However, SFD fails to reflect the real nature of flow transport, especially in areas with low relief. This paper describes and analyzes the integration of a Multiple Flow Direction (MFD) algorithm in CAMF, in order to provide a more realistic flow simulation. We compare the computational complexity of CAMF-SFD and CAMF-MFD and we discuss the scalability w.r.t. the number of cells involved. We evaluate the behavior of both variants for sediment yield minimization by afforestation in two catchments with different properties.

17. Application of standard web services for the automatic hydrometeorology monitoring, integrating information from diverse sensors using ontologies

Abstract

The last developments in worlwide technology and the continuous grow in telecommunications have resulted in the requirement to make available the information generated by a number of devices, especially for those that incorporate sensors, with the goal of reacting to any relevant events that could occur. The latest advances in this area have resulted in the development of several devices with heterogeneous types and from different vendors. This paper presents a proposal for an architecture that integrates serveral standard web services for the compilation, organization and storage of the information generated by a network of hydrometeorology sensors. Likewise, the paper proposes the application of standard services for controling remotely these sensors and for managing events and generating early warnings. The aforementioned web services are some examples of the set of services that form the Sensor Web Enablement standard. Considering the diversity, both in type and vendor, that is typically found, El actual avance tecnológico mundial y el crecimiento e las comunicaciones, ha hecho necesario que la información que generan diferentes dispositivos, en especial aquellos que disponen de sensores, esté disponible de forma inmediata para poder dar respuestas y/o soluciones dependiendo de los eventos que pudieran presentarse. El desarrollo de esta área en los últimos años ha provocado la aparición de dispositivos con sensores de tipos y marcas heterogéneas. El presente artículo presenta una propuesta de arquitectura que integra varios servicios web estándares para la recopilación, organización, y almacenamiento de la información proveniente de sensores hidrometeorológicos. Igualmente se propone la aplicación de servicios para el control remoto de los sensores y para la gestión de eventos y generación de alertas. Todos estos servicios web forman parte del estándar Sensor Web Enablement (SWE). Considerando la diversidad en las estaciones y sensores hidrometeorológicos que típicamente se encuentra en una red de monitoreo, se propone en este artículo la aplicación de ontologías para homogenizar e integrar la información proveniente de sensores de diferentes tipos y fabricantes.

Abstract

A GIS is capable of identifying a set of land units meeting positional, temporal, topological and multiple on-site attribute criteria. Based on the combination of its generic analytical functionalities, a GIS can also be used to rank the alternative land units and propose the best or worst ones in terms of the non-weighted or weighted criteria. More advanced multi-criteria decision methods are however not easily incorporated in the GIS-framework so that extension with dedicated tools is required to upgrade the GIS to a full blown sDSS. In this paper we illustrate this upgrading of GIS to sDSS and we argue that when also temporal alternatives are dealt with, the DSS can be termed spatio-temporal. Three statements are made: (i) the presented rationale is challenged by phenomena of spatial and spatio-temporal interaction, (ii) important research avenues are present in order to optimize topological and off-site decision attributes in the spatial and spatio-temporal decision problems and (iii) the forestry domain is very suitable for study and application of all the mentioned issues due to the explicit spatial and temporal nature of the management issues which must be addressed.
