Academic librarians have increasingly gone public with their experiences of low morale and burnout, yet less attention has been paid to the workplace experiences of library staff. As Kaetrena Davis Kendrick notes in her work on the persistent harm of low morale among librarians, “the cost of silence can be high.”We decided to examine that gap in the research. In exploring the landscape of library staff morale, we hypothesized that the nature of the academic library’s hierarchies, and staff roles within them, would be major factors in levels of morale. We also sought to investigate questions of organizational culture, opportunities for professional development, and management style.Our research team, including library staff, former library staff, a recent MLS grad and MLIS student, and librarians, conducted 34 structured interviews with academic library staff nationwide (purposefully excluding UC staff). The interviews took place during a three-week period in May-June 2020, and provide perhaps the final snapshot of library staff life in the pre-COVID era. Interviews were transcribed by a student who was trained by a member of our team, and de-identified transcripts were analyzed using the qualitative data analysis software MAXDQA.In this talk, we present our findings, some of which surprised us. Among other things, the findings establish that efforts to address equity in compensation, provide professional growth opportunities, and create more collegial work environments, in particular addressing the librarian-staff divide and the need for manager advocacy, can all improve staff morale. In addition, we suggest concrete ways to make changes in libraries in order to assess and improve morale across staff hierarchies, and we offer resources for workplace development and support for staff.

In this poster, we present our findings establishing that efforts to address equity in compensation, provide professional growth opportunities, and create more collegial work environments can all improve staff morale. Finally, we suggest how you can make changes in your own libraries to assess and improve morale across staff hierarchies.

El presente capítulo expresa los resultados del proyecto de investigación titulado Desarrollo de habilidades de pensamiento crítico en estudiantes de IX semestre de Ingeniería de Sistemas modalidad virtual de la Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina que surge de la necesidad de analizar el alcance que ha logrado el Modelo académico virtual en Areandina, específicamente en la formación de las habilidades de pensamiento crítico. A partir del Modelo de procesamiento del pensamiento crítico propuesto por Margarita Amestoy de Sánchez y en el marco de un enfoque de investigación cualitativo, se desarrollaron instrumentos para analizar las maneras como se propician estas habilidades en los módulos dispuestos en la plataforma como mediación pedagógica y las acciones de docentes y estudiantes. Fueron analizados cinco cursos virtuales, aplicados instrumentos y técnicas de recolección de información a cinco docentes y 31 estudiantes del programa. Los resultados obtenidos evidencian que las acciones formativas se articulan para el fortalecimiento de las habilidades cognitivas propias del pensamiento crítico, con un mayor acento en las habilidades de interpretación, inferencia, análisis y explicación y menor en las de evaluación y autorregulación, siendo esta última uno de los mayores retos del proceso; la acción del docente moviliza la acción cognitiva de los estudiantes a partir de la plataforma como mediación pedagógica y las definiciones propias del Sello Transformador Areandino que impulsa la formación de alto nivel desde todos sus nodos, en particular desde el nodo de pensamiento crítico. En el libro Tecnología e innovación en educación superior: escenarios pospandemia, se presenta una compilación de catorce investigaciones realizadas por profesores de educación superior de la Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina, y algunas colaboraciones con otras universidades del país y de México, en las cuales el lector encontrará una serie de estudios que dan respuesta a los retos que impuso la pandemia por Covid-19. Por supuesto, todas ellas están asociadas a la tecnología. Además, el libro plantea los desafíos de esta transformación educativa en el desarrollo de habilidades y competencias por parte de profesores y estudiantes, y los retos que aún faltan por enfrentar en materia de formación y los que se derivan propiamente al trabajar con la tecnología, con el objetivo de mejorar aprendizajes e innovar adentro y fuera del aula. Cada uno de estos capítulos centra la mirada en la tecnología y la innovación educativa, esta última considerada como el cambio de perspectivas, componentes y elementos de una estructura, con el fin de propiciar en los profesores y estudiantes nuevas competencias para responder a un entorno cada vez más cambiante y dinámico (Mora Ramírez, et al., 2021).

Este proyecto de investigación refleja los resultados de la implementación de una estrategia educativa a partir de secuencias didácticas con el uso de la herramienta Google Classroom. Como objetivo general se plantea fortalecer la competencia comunicativa – lectora en los alumnos de grado segundo de la Institución Educativa Nueva Delhi de Bogotá. El alcance de la presente investigación consistió en reconocer las fortalezas ofrecidas con la incorporación de los recursos educativos digitales en el aprendizaje de la competencia comunicativa – lectora; teniendo en cuenta, que debido a la emergencia por la pandemia surgió la necesidad urgente de poder implementar nuevas prácticas de aprendizaje por medio de la virtualidad. La metodología utilizada en este proyecto fue de tipo cualitativo; ya que se trató de una Investigación Acción Pedagógica. Esta se desarrolló en cuatro fases. La primera de diagnóstico a través de una prueba inicial para poder identificar el nivel de la competencia comunicativa- lectora. Una fase de diseño donde se realizó una propuesta pedagógica que incorporara las secuencias didácticas y los recursos educativos digitales. La siguiente fase, donde se implementó como estrategia pedagógica las secuencias didácticas. Y una fase de evaluación donde se valoraron los alcances obtenidos con la implementación de dicha estrategia pedagógica y la incorporación de los Red desde el aprendizaje significativo. Los resultados demostraron la gran diferencia que existe en la práctica cuando son utilizados los recursos educativos digitales en el salón de clases; los educandos lograron mejores resultados en la competencia comunicativa lectora y demostraron una gran motivación en relación con las clases. A manera de conclusión se puede afirmar que la utilización de recursos TIC en el salón de clases influyeron de manera efectiva en el aprendizaje de la competencia comunicativa lectora de los escolares. Assessment of telomere length (TL) in peripheral blood leukocytes is part of the diagnostic algorithm applied to patients with acquired bone marrow failure syndromes (BMFSs) and dyskeratosis congenita (DKC). Monochrome multiplex-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (MM-qPCR) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (flow-FISH) are methodologies available for TL screening. Dependent on TL expressed in relation to percentiles of healthy controls, further genetic testing for inherited mutations in telomere maintenance genes is recommended. However, the correct threshold to trigger this genetic workup is still under debate. Here, we prospectively compared MM-qPCR and flow-FISH regarding their capacity for accurate identification of DKC patients. All patients (n = 105) underwent genetic testing by next-generation sequencing and in 16 patients, mutations in DKC-relevant genes were identified. Whole leukocyte TL of patients measured by MM-qPCR was found to be moderately correlated with lymphocyte TL measured by flow-FISH (r² = 0.34; P < 0.0001). The sensitivity of both methods was high, but the specificity of MM-qPCR (29%) was significantly lower compared with flow-FISH (58%). These results suggest that MM-qPCR of peripheral blood cells is inferior to flow-FISH for clinical routine screening for suspected DKC in adult patients with BMFS due to lower specificity and a higher rate of false-positive results.

Imatinib (IM) is the most common first-line tyrosine–kinase inhibitor (TKI) used to treat CML. Some studies suggest that BCR-ABL1 transcript types confer different responses to IM. The objective of this study was to correlate the expression of e14a2 or e13a2 to clinical characteristics, cumulative cytogenetic and molecular responses to IM, acquisition of deep molecular response (DMR) and its duration (sDMR), progression rate (CIP), overall survival (OS), and treatment-free remission (TFR) rate. We studied 202 CML patients, 76 expressing the e13a2 and 126 the e14a2, and correlated the differential transcript expression with the above-mentioned parameters. There were no differences in the cumulative incidence of cytogenetic responses nor in the acquisition of DMR and sDMR between the two groups, but the e14a2 transcript had a positive impact on molecular response during the first 6 months, whereas the e13a2 was associated with improved long-term OS. No correlation was observed between the transcript type and TFR rate.

The comorbidity burden is an important risk factor for overall survival (OS) in several hematological malignancies. This observational prospective study was conducted to evaluate the impact of individual comorbidities on survival in a multicenter series of 668 patients with primary myelofibrosis (PMF) or MF secondary to polycythemia vera (PPV-MF) or essential thrombocythemia (PET-MF). Hypertension (hazard ratio (HR) = 4.96, p < 0.001), smoking (HR = 5.08, p < 0.001), dyslipidemia (HR = 4.65, p < 0.001) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) (HR = 4.26, p = 0.015) were most adversely associated with OS. Diabetes (HR = 3.01, p < 0.001), pulmonary disease (HR = 3.13, p < 0.001) and renal dysfunction (HR = 1.82, p = 0.037) were also associated with an increased risk of death. Multivariate analysis showed that pulmonary disease (HR = 2.69, p = 0.001), smoking (HR = 3.34, p < 0.001), renal dysfunction (HR = 2.08, p = 0.043) and HCV (HR = 11.49, p = 0.001) had a negative impact on OS. When ruxolitinib exposure was included in the model, the effect of each comorbidity on survival was modified. Therefore, individual comorbidities should be taken into account in determining the survival prognosis for patients with MF.

Ambient temperature is a primary factor affecting the physiology and activity of reptiles. Thermoregulation involves a series of mechanisms to maintain an organism's body temperature within a narrow range. The study of thermal ecology of lizards is relevant for understanding their distribution, life history, ecology and thermal requirements. Moreover, determining how species are able to attain physiologically active body temperatures in challenging environments is necessary for assessing the risk of extinction due to climate change, especially for threatened endemic species. We evaluated and compared the thermal ecology of two populations of the viviparous lizard Barisia imbricata, at contrasting elevations (2,200 and 3,700 m). We obtained variation in thermal data from winter through autumn for multiple years. We determined thermal efficiency indices based on field active body temperatures, preferred temperatures (in a thermal gradient), and operative environmental temperatures (according to null models). We also recorded substrate and air temperatures at the time of capture. Mean body temperature of both populations showed a positive correlation with environmental temperatures. We found significant seasonal differences in body temperature in both populations, and between body temperatures of the two populations. Our results suggest that B. imbricata is an eurythermic species and can thermoregulate actively at any given time. However, when environmental temperatures are within the range of preferred temperatures, the species does not engage in thermoregulatory behavior. This information expands knowledge on the range of possible thermal responses to environmental variation within a species.
