Abstract

Phonon-polaritons, mixed excitations of light coupled to lattice vibrations (phonons), are emerging as a powerful platform for nanophotonic applications. This is because of their ability to concentrate light into extreme sub-wavelength scales and because of their longer phonon lifetimes than their plasmonic counterparts. In this work, the infrared properties of phonon-polaritonic nanoresonators made of monoisotopic B-10 hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) are explored, a material with increased phonon-polariton lifetimes compared to naturally abundant h-BN due to reduced photon scattering from randomly distributed isotopes. An average relative improvement of 50% in the nanoresonators Q factor is obtained with respect of nanoresonators made of naturally abundant h-BN. Moreover, the monoisotopic h-BN nano-ribbon arrays are used to sense nanometric-thick films of molecules, both through surface-enhanced absorption spectroscopy and refractive index sensing. In addition, strong coupling is achieved between a molecular vibration and the phonon-polariton resonance in monoisotopic h-BN ribbons.

Abstract

Eucalyptus covers approximately 7.5 million hectares in Brazil and serves as the primary woody species cultivated for commercial purposes. However, native insects and invasive pests pose a significant threat to eucalyptus trees, resulting in substantial economic losses and reduced forest productivity. One of the primary lepidopteran pests affecting eucalyptus is Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), commonly referred to as the brown looper caterpillar. To address this issue, FuturaGene, the biotech division of Suzano S.A., has developed an insect-resistant (IR) eucalyptus variety, which expresses Cry pesticidal proteins (Cry1Ab, Cry1Bb, and Cry2Aa), derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Following extensive safety assessments, including field trials across various biomes in Brazil, the Brazilian National Technical Commission of Biosafety (CTNBio) recently approved the commercialization of IR eucalyptus. The biosafety assessments involved the analysis of molecular genomics, digestibility, thermostability, non-target organism exposure, degradability in the field, and effects on soil microbial communities and arthropod communities. In addition, in silico studies were conducted to evaluate allergenicity and toxicity. Results from both laboratory and field studies indicated that Bt eucalyptus is as safe as the conventional eucalyptus clone for humans, animals, and the environment, ensuring the secure use of this insect-resistant trait in wood production.

Abstract

Diverse microbial ecosystems underpin life in the sea. Among these microbes are many unicellular eukaryotes that span the diversity of the eukaryotic tree of life. However, genetic tractability has been limited to a few species, which do not represent eukaryotic diversity or environmentally relevant taxa. Here, we report on the development of genetic tools in a range of protists primarily from marine environments. We present evidence for foreign DNA delivery and expression in 13 species never before transformed and for advancement of tools for eight other species, as well as potential reasons for why transformation of yet another 17 species tested was not achieved. Our resource in genetic manipulation will provide insights into the ancestral eukaryotic lifeforms, general eukaryote cell biology, protein diversification and the evolution of cellular pathways.

Abstract

We study the selective excitation at infrared and THz frequencies of optical and acoustic plasmonic modes supported by thin topological insulators. These modes are characterized by effective net charge or net spin density, respectively, and we study their excitation by combining many-body and electromagnetic calculations. We first show that non-locality can significantly modify the plasmonic response: it changes the energy of propagating plasmons up to tens of percent. We then discuss how, by changing the distance between a dipolar source and a semi-infinite 10 nm thin film, it is possible to control the excitation of acoustic and optical propagating plasmons, which can propagate over a distance of several plasmonic wavelengths. Furthermore, we consider 10 nm thin TI nanodisks and study the excitation of acoustic and optical localized plasmon modes by a point dipole source and plane wave illumination, respectively. The resonant plasmonic modes appear at frequencies that strongly depends on the size of the disk, and that can be potentially tuned by applying electrostatic gating to modify the Fermi Energy of the conductive 2-dimensional layer that forms at the interfaces of the TI. We observe a spectral shift from ~29 $\mu$m to ~34 $\mu$m by changing the Fermi Energy from 250meV to 350meV. Last, the electromagnetic energy of these plasmonics modes can be confined to very small regions, of effective volume ~(120 nm)^3 for the smaller disk considered, much less than the free-space wavelength cubed $\lambda$^3 ~(35000 nm)^3. The strong confinement is desirable for achieving very efficient coupling with nearby systems. Our detailed study thus shows that thin topological insulators are a promising system to control both the spin and charge oscillations associated with the plasmonic resonances, with possible applications to fast, compact and electrically-controlled spintronics devices., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. 25. Evaluación del crecimiento inicial de clones de álamo en el norte de la Patagonia

Abstract

En los valles irrigados de Río Negro y Neuquén, el cultivo de álamos acompañó históricamente la producción agrícola, utilizándose clones de Populus nigra L. en cortinas rompeviento y clones de Populus xcanadensis Moench. para las forestaciones en macizo. Buscando ampliar la disponibilidad de genotipos para los diferentes sitios de cultivo, se instaló un ensayo comparativo con trece clones de álamo en la localidad de Pomona, Provincia de Río Negro. Se evaluaron seis clones de P. xcanadensis ('Triplo', 'Ragonese 22 INTA', "Pangui INTA", "Pudú INTA", y los testigos comerciales 'Conti 12' e 'I-214'), seis clones de P. deltoides ('Harvard', 'Onda', 'Stoneville 67', 'Carabelas INTA', "20-82" y "C-657") y un clon de P. xcanescens. Se utilizó un diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar (DBCA) con quince repeticiones y parcelas de una planta. Luego de cuatro períodos de crecimiento, 'I-214' y 'Triplo' tuvieron los mayores incrementos de DAP, no encontrándose diferencias significativas con los valores de 'Conti 12', 'Ragonese 22 INTA', "Pangui INTA", "Pudú INTA", "20-82" y P. xcanescens. Los menores crecimientos fueron observados en los deltoides 'Stoneville 67' y "C- 657". Los clones 'Ragonese 22 INTA', 'Triplo' y "20-82" constituyen alternativas para el cultivo de álamos en macizos y cortinas rompeviento.

Abstract

Hot carrier solar cells allow potential efficiency close to the thermodynamical limit in ideal conditions. However, the feasability of such devices has not been clearly stated so far and only ideal cells were considered in previous studies. Here we develop a model with realistic energy selective contacts, carrier thermalization and absorptivity. The requirements in term of contact selectivity is investigated, showing that semi-selective contacts are not incompatible with high efficiencies. Candidates for absorbing material were synthesized and the required thermalization properties are obtained. Abstract

It is well known that Raman scattering and fluorescence can be enhanced by the presence of metallic nanoparticles. Here, we derive simple equations to analyse the influence of metallic nanoparticles on upconversion processes such as non-radiative energy transfer or excited state absorption. We compare the resulting expressions with the more familiar Raman and fluorescence cases, and find significant differences. We use numerical simulations to calculate the upconverted signal enhancement achievable by means of metallic spheres of different radii, and find particles of 100-400nm radius at infrared frequencies to be favorable. We also discuss the considerable challenges involved in using metallic particles to enhance upconversion for solar energy., Comment: Changes mostly made on the structure of the text and on the notation to improve clarity. Abstract

The slow calcium transient triggered by low-frequency electrical stimulation (ES) in adult muscle fibers and regulated by the extracellular ATP/IP3/IP3R pathway has been related to muscle plasticity. A regulation of muscular tropism associated with the MCU has also been described. However, the role of transient cytosolic calcium signals and signaling pathways related to muscle plasticity over the regulation of gene expression of the MCU complex (MCU, MICU1, MICU2, and EMRE) in adult skeletal muscle is completely unknown. In the present work, we show that 270 0.3-ms-long pulses at 20-Hz ES (and not at 90 Hz) transiently decreased the mRNA levels of the MCU complex in mice flexor digitorum brevis isolated muscle fibers. Importantly, when ATP released after 20-Hz ES is hydrolyzed by the enzyme apyrase, the repressor effect of 20 Hz on mRNA levels of the MCU complex is lost. Accordingly, the exposure of muscle fibers to 30 μM exogenous ATP produces the same effect as 20-Hz ES. Moreover, the use of apyrase in resting conditions (without ES) increased mRNA levels of MCU, pointing out the importance of extracellular ATP concentration over MCU mRNA levels. The use of xestospongin B (inhibitor of IP3 receptors) also prevented the decrease of mRNA levels of MCU, MICU1, MICU2, and EMRE mediated by a low-frequency ES. Our results show that the MCU complex can be regulated by electrical stimuli in a frequency-dependent manner. The changes observed in mRNA levels may be related to changes in the mitochondria, associated with the phenotypic transition from a fast- to a slow-type muscle, according to the described effect of this stimulation frequency on muscle phenotype. The decrease in mRNA levels of the MCU complex by exogenous ATP and the increase in MCU levels when basal ATP is reduced with the enzyme apyrase indicate that extracellular ATP may be a regulator of the MCU complex. Moreover, our results suggest that this regulation is part of the axes linking low-frequency stimulation with ATP/IP3/IP3R.

Abstract

Multiple perturbations of the immune response affecting a range of cells have been reported in Trypanosoma cruzi-infected individuals and associated to clinical manifestations of chronic Chagas disease. There is a paucity of knowledge about the role of T follicular helper (Tfh) cells in this infection. Here, we sought to characterize circulating Tfh (cTfh) cells in chronic Chagas disease patients and to identify potential associations with disease severity in humans. cTfh cells were characterized by flow cytometry in freshly isolated PBMCs from 7 T. cruzi-infected asymptomatic patients (ASYMP), 5 patients with chronic chagasic dilated cardiomyopathy (CCC) and 8 healthy controls, using antibodies against chemokine receptors CXCR5, CXCR3, CCR6, and CCR7. Our results showed significant expansion of CD4+CD45RO+CXCR5+CCR6+ cells in ASYMP and CCC patients, along with a contraction of CD4+CD45RO+CXCR5+CXCR3-CCR6- (cTfh2) cells. ASYMP patients further exhibited decreased CD4+CD45RO+CXCR5+CXCR3+CCR6- (cTfh1) cells and expanded CD4+CD45RO+CXCR5+CXCR3-CCR6+ (cTfh17) cells while CCC patients exhibited significantly increased frequencies of CD4+CD45RO+CXCR5+CCR7+ cells. Linear regression analysis revealed a positive trend of CD4+CD45RO+CXCR5+CXCR3+CCR6+ (cTfh1/17) cells and negative trends of cTfh1 and cTfh2 cells as disease was more severe. There was no correlation between the frequencies of cTfh cells and circulating CD19+IgD-IgG+ cells or serum levels of T. cruzi-specific IgG. These results demonstrate that the cTfh compartment of humans chronically infected with T. cruzi comprises expanded CCR6-expressing cells and reduced cTfh2 cells. The association of discrete phenotypic changes in cTfh subsets with different clinical forms suggests the potential contribution of T follicular helper cells to Chagas heart disease progression.
